Christianity has not ended the wickedness. We have swapped the concepts like Osu with homophobia. I would argue Nigeria is less civilised now than ever before. nathanccr:
Thank God for civilization biko, lots of wickedness would have still persisted. Like enslaving generations and cursing them not to make it or fulfill destiny. That's y I always run away from folks that are diabolic. All they think about is how to harm someone or something.... |

Interesting FeelDeMusic: Also "witch" killings are prevalent yet again because Christianity has taken the minds of innocent people and turned them into predatory condemning murderers!
Yes, you can argue that Africans have had a similar mentality all throughout because more traditional religious practices had the concept of witches and of killing those who were thought to be witches. But guess what? Almost all religions, from wherever, that believed in the concept of evil sorcerers threatening or being able to threaten their lives, were unfortunately guilty of this practice. We didn't know any better back then, we thought everything was attributed to magic or any other such thing. And, now that it's the 21st century, we best move on with our lives and come to accept the fact that witches are still not real and will not come to harm people, and that killing them in the name of whatever religion is barbaric, pointless, inhumane, and cruel!
Wish I could write a song about this...... |

tru soliq55: Yes it has. When you hear Ooni of Ife that is supposed to be the custodian of the gods in Yorubaland say Jesus is his dad, one can't help but think it is affecting our culture in a negative way. |

Interesting afroniger: Yes. It is the same way Islam was used as a tool by the Fulanis to wipe out and supplant Hausa Culture. Before you know it they will brainwash people to see their culture as 'pagan' , 'fetish' and 'uncivilized'. That is why I don't subscribe to foreign or imported religions because they are weapons of neocolonization. 1 Like |

Smart stuff soliq55:
It's not actually.
While religion has helped us through the building of schools, hospitals and the likes. It is not without its downsides.
Firstly, the distinction between the state and religion is extremely blur in Nigeria which is a recipe for underdevelopment, poverty, lack of creative ideas. Imagine when you ask for a solution for a societal problem facing us in 2018 and people start opening up the bible to the book of Jeremiah. Unfortunately, we can not find practical solutions to improve our quality of life in 2018 from a book written 2000 years ago.
Secondly, religion promising us that our reward is in heaven subconsciously affects us from striving to make a better planet for ourselves and our offsprings. How many Nigerians give a damn about recycling or their environment? We dont because religion teaches us that the earth is not the only place we've got. Since we are going to heaven, why bother making earth a better place. Why invest in medical research since God is the healer?
So religion as we practice it in Nigeria make us passive human beings. |

lol silly person HigherEd:
Lol this guy you are very illogical 1) point one is just like saying that since a Christian was caught raping someone then Christianity endorses rape. People can do things based on many factors that are different from the religion they bear. Whether the countries who sponsored Biafran war were Christian or not is completely irrelevant as long as the war was not inspired by the bible or the Church...
3) Monogamy is the most major step towards equality. Christianity made it clear that women were not properties to be acquired and discarded as most major cultures did including the majority of African Cultures and religion. By mandating christian men to marry one wive each Christianity was ushering in an era of freedom for women where they can enter monogamist relationships without fear of competing for love or attention for their kids...
4) Foolish talk once again, Children have also been accused of Witchcraft here in Africa even before the White Men accepted Christianity. Terms like "Ogbanje", " Emere" are totally indigenous African concepts to refer to children that are possessed of witchcraft. And thanks to Christianity the practice of these indigenous religions have waned.
5) Maybe because no one born of a woman would have dared affiliate themselves with homosexuality. Up till the early 2000s most Africans never knew anything about modern day homosexual practice not to even talk of persecuting them. My first knowledge of Homosexual marriages was in 2006 when I read a JW awake publication and I could remember being astonished that gay ppl truly existed. But make no doubt about it, African religions prior to Christianity would have crucified anyone who came out to claim homosexuality.
