BusinessNigerian Stock Market Loses N370bn On Tuesday by puyol005(op): 5:11pm On Feb 13, 2018
The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Tuesday sustained seven-day falling streak with the market capitalisation shedding N370 billion in one day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the market capitalisation lost N370 billion or 2.41 per cent to close at N14.967 trillion against N15.337 trillion achieved on Monday.

Similarly, the All-Share Index which opened at 42,737.89 lost 1,029.74 points or 2.41 per cent to close at 41,708.15 following huge losses by some highly capitalised stocks.

Some financial experts in an interview with NAN attributed the persistent loss to decline in global stock markets, especially in the U.S. and Europe, contributed to the bearish trend in the market.

Dr Uche Uwaleke, the Head of Banking and Finance Department, Nasarawa State University Keffi, said investors reactions to the global stock market trend led to sell pressure on the exchange.

Uwaleke said drop in crude oil price following increased supply and profit taking by investors in respect of over-priced stocks, particularly those of tier 11 banks contributed to the development.

He said relative uptick in returns from money market securities led to movement of funds from capital market to the money market securities.

Prof. Sheriffdeen Tella, Professor of Economics, Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago-Iwoye, Ogun said the bearish trend was expected because the stock market usually reacted to economic conditions.

“This is New Year and the budget is yet to be passed, so money is not yet being released and people need to buy lots of things.

“Fortunately, the market was bullish recently such that the values of shares went up making it possible for profit taking,” he said.

Tella said the bearish trend would bring new opportunities for new investors as well as old ones who would want to adjust their financial portfolio.

He said that these investors would go the market shortly to take advantage of the lower prices of shares.

“We will start seeing bullish activities in the market again.

“It is the nature of the market to facilitate between bullish and bearish swings as dictated by market forces,” he said.

An analysis of the price movement showed that Nestle recorded the highest loss depreciating by N40 to close at N1, 320 per share.

Dangote Cement trailed with a loss of N13.30 to close at N258.70, while Nigerian Breweries dipped N5.20 to close at N127.80 per share.

Guinness was down by N5 to close at N105, while International Breweries depreciated by N2.50 to close at N57.50 per share.

On the other hand, Lafarge Afeica led the gainers’ table growing by N1 to close at N51 per share.

Zenith International Bank followed with a gain of 60k to close at N30, while Berger Paint gained 45k to close at N9.45 per share.

Access Bank increased by 45k to close at N12, while Dangote Sugar Refinery advanced by 30k to close at N21 per share.

The banking sub-sector was the toast of investors with Diamond Bank emerging the most traded, trading 67.69 million shares worth N181.14 million.

FCMB Group followed with an account of 49.22 million shares valued at N126.18 million, while Fidelity Bank sold 42.78 million shares worth N129.55 million.

United Bank for Africa traded 39.16 million shares valued at N437.59 million, while FBN Holdings exchanged 32.59 million shares worth N358.64 million.

In all, the volume of shares traded closed lower with an exchange of 470.52 million shares valued at N3.68 billion transacted in 6,309 deals.

This was against the 517.44 million shares worth N5.19 billion traded in 5,852 deals on Monday.

Christianity EtcSaudi Women Need Not Wear Abaya Robes, Says Senior Cleric by puyol005(op): 6:05pm On Feb 10, 2018
Saudi women should not have to wear the loose-fitting abaya robe to shroud their bodies in public, a senior cleric said, in the latest sign of a far-reaching liberalisation drive.

“More than 90 percent of pious Muslim women in the Muslim world do not wear abayas,” said Sheikh Abdullah al-Mutlaq, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars — the kingdom’s highest religious body.

“So we should not force people to wear abayas,” he told a television programme broadcast on Friday.

Saudi Arabia, which has some of the world’s tightest restrictions on women, requires them to wear the garment by law.

The government has not said whether it will change the law, but this is the first such comment from a senior religious figure.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has recently introduced a series of reforms in favour of women as the kingdom prepares for a post-oil era.

Saudi Arabia last month allowed women to enter a football stadium for the first time to watch a game.

The move came four months after the kingdom announced an end to a long-standing ban on women driving — a major change to the country’s ultra-conservative social order.

But women still face a number of restrictions.

Under Saudi Arabia’s existing guardianship system, a male family member — normally the father, husband or brother — must grant permission for a woman’s study, travel and a host of other activities.

Sheikh Mutlaq’s comment sparked a host of reactions on social media, including from other clerics who backed his statement.

One Saudi Twitter user commented: “Chastity and morality should not be tied to a piece of cloth.”

CrimePolice Averts Another Suicide Attempt On Third Mainland Bridge - The Guardian by puyol005(op): 3:29pm On Mar 24, 2017
The Lagos State Police Command has rescued a woman, Taiwo Titilayo Momoh who attempted to jump into the Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge on Friday.

Taiwo’s case is coming few days after a medical practitioner, Allwell Orji jumped into the Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge as his remains was retrieved from the water on Wednesday.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni told newsmen at the Rapid Response Squad, (RRS), headquarters, Lagos Government Secretariat, Alausa, Lagos, on Friday that Momoh was in a taxi heading towards Oworonshoki on Third Mainland Bridge when she told the taxi driver to stop on the bridge.

According to Owoseni, the woman was about to jump into the water when a police patrol team on a routine patrol on the Third Mainland Bridge sighted her and rushed to save her before she jumped into the Lagoon.
“She attempted suicide by attempting to jump into the Lagoon around Oworonshoki inward Mainland on Third Mainland Bridge.

Unfortunately for her, she was rescued. The woman was in a taxi and alighted on the bridge and wanted to commit suicide by jumping into the Lagoon.

“The police patrol team sighted her and rushed to rescue her before she jumped into the Lagoon,” he said.

The police boss said from his interaction with the woman, she had depression as a result of unpaid loans, adding that “she is still insisting that she wants to end her life.”

Owoseni noted that committing suicide was an offence under the law but that the police would try to talk the woman out of committing suicide.

He said the woman would be taken through post-trauma programme to ensure that she had hope and not commit suicide, adding that the police would do a medical evaluation on her to ascertain her condition.

Owoseni lamented the rate at which people commit suicide in the country, describing it as worrisome, adding that the police had begun patrol of bridges across the state to forestall other cases of suicide.

He added that it was now an offence for individuals to walk on bridges in the state and that no vehicle would be allowed to stop on any bridge in the state henceforth in order to prevent suicide incidences.

“Right now, the woman is still in trauma and she still insists that she wants to end her life,” he said.

However, as the woman was being led from the RRS headquarters into a waiting police vehicle, she was confronted with several television cameras and still cameras and she reacted by saying that she was not a criminal and that her shots should not be taken.

PoliticsAmbode To Barnish Yellow Buses Off Lagos Roads - The Guardian by puyol005(op): 7:27pm On Feb 06, 2017
If there’s one symbol that defines Nigeria’s economic hub of Lagos it’s the yellow “danfo” mini-bus, the closest thing to public transport in the chaotic, sprawling metropolis.

But on Monday Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said he plans to banish the buses by the end of this year because they are “not acceptable and befitting for a megacity”.

Ambode’s drive is the latest attempt in a seemingly never-ending campaign to tame the wild streets of Lagos, which is renowned for its traffic gridlock and crumbling infrastructure.

The governor’s goal is to replace the buses — as well as motorcycle taxis and three-wheeled motorised rickshaws — with a modern public transportation system.

“When I wake up in the morning and see all these yellow buses and see okada (motorbike) and all kinds of tricycles and then we claim we are a megacity, that is not true and we must acknowledge that that is a faulty connectivity that we are running,” he said.

“We want to banish yellow buses this year,” he said in a speech, according to a state government news release.

“We must address the issue of connectivity that makes people to move around with ease and that is where we are going.”

Like other fast-growing African cities, Lagos, which is home to some 20 million people, has seen its population boom without the infrastructure to keep up with demand.

The first phase of a rapid transport rail system was originally due to open in 2014 and then in December last year, while there are even plans for a cable car system.

The buses may not be pretty — many have doors missing and spew noxious clouds of exhaust fumes — while their drivers seem only vaguely aware of the highway code, indicators and the brake pedal.

But as a cheap form of transport, strictly enforced by a daredevil conductor often found hanging off the side of the bus, they are the preferred form of travel for many workers.

SportsRonaldo Has To Live With Being Subbed – Zidane by puyol005(op): 11:15am On Sep 26, 2016
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane insisted Cristiano Ronaldo has to learn to live with being substituted after sulking off the field visibly frustrated in the European champions’ 2-2 draw at Las Palmas.

Zidane replaced the three-time World Player of the Year with Madrid leading 2-1 18 minutes from time, but an unhappy Ronaldo watched from the bench as Sergio Araujo equalised to ensure Real dropped points for the second time in four days.

“I have to take him off sometimes and tonight we did it,” said Zidane.

“That isn’t going to change what we are going to do continue to do.”
At the forefront of Zidane’s mind was Real’s huge Champions League clash away to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

However, Ronaldo endured a poor night in front of goal as he fluffed a great chance from Alvaro Morata’s cut-back before half-time and fired straight at Javi Varas in the build-up to Madrid’s second goal.

“We have a game on Tuesday and I thought it was the time to take him off, 20 minutes from the end, thinking about Tuesday,” added Zidane.

“I know he always wants to play and always wants to stay on the field, but I also have to think about the players and for me it was best to rest and think about Tuesday.”

Ronaldo has completed 90 minutes just twice this season, though, as he was also replaced early on his return from a knee ligament injury against Osasuna earlier this month and missed last weekend’s win at Espanyol due to illness.

Real’s lead over Barcelona at the top of the table now stands at a solitary point having failed to bounce back from a 1-1 draw with Villarreal on Wednesday that snapped a 16-game winning streak in La Liga.

Of most concern for Madrid is their leaky defence as they have now kept just one clean sheet in their last six games.

“Sometimes there are games like this where you have the chances to win and you don’t take them,” continued Zidane.

“I think there is a lack of concentration in the second goal. I have to analyse it, but I am not going to complain. Playing like this for 90 minutes we will be at the top of the league I have no doubt.”

Gareth Bale had been the star member of Madrid’s front line most often sacrificed by Zidane in recent weeks as the Welshman was replaced in each of his last three outings.

However, Bale looked back close to the form which saw him shine towards the end of last season and at Euro 2016 and believes Ronaldo will also need time to get back to 100 percent fitness following his two-month injury layoff after the Euros.

“He’s been working hard on his injuries since he came back,” said Bale.

“He hasn’t had a pre-season like me and it takes a little bit of time.”

Bale is yet to score since the opening day of the La Liga season, but insists the goals will arrive if Real continue to create the number of chances they did in the Canary Islands.
“We’re not happy to lose four points, but if you look at the league overall we are in a good position,” he added.

“You have to look at the positives. Of course we are disappointed, but we are still unbeaten. We are still creating chances and if we keep doing that we’ll score plenty of goals.”

Business‘nigerians Spend N3.5tr Generating Their Own Electricity Yearly’ by puyol005(op): 8:07am On Sep 02, 2016
• 5.17m households run on generators
• ‘How nation, others can tap from $121b cloud tech market’

Due to irregular supply of public electricity, about N3.5 trillion ($21.9 billion) is spent yearly by businesses, families and others in Nigeria to buy fuel for power generation. Disclosing this yesterday at the ongoing 2016 Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai, China, the Business Leader (Distribution), Sahara Group, the firm with majority stakes in Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, Rotimi Onanuga, said that in addition to the challenge, “the power infrastructure in Nigeria is aging.”

Onanuga lamented that despite the rich energy reserves, the enactment of the Power Reform Act and sustained government investments, Nigeria’s power supply still faces serious challenges.

As the largest economy in Africa, Nigeria vigorously develops its infrastructure and invests primarily in four fields: energy generation, power transmission, power distribution and renewable energy.

“Yet, due to the unstable power supply, manufacturing enterprises, trade enterprises and common families spend an annual average of N3.5 trillion to purchase diesel and gasoline for power generation,” he stated.
Onanuga said it was regrettable that the country is experiencing such a crisis, “given that it is the most populous country in Africa, boasting of a population of 173 million people, which accounts for 16 per cent of the total population of Africa.”

According to him, there are currently 5, 172, 979 power consumers in Nigeria, among which nearly 54.15 per cent (2.8 million) have no installed meters. He revealed that the IKEDC had been able to distribute 61, 000 meters within its area of coverage, but stated that the target is to distribute at least 300, 000 meters by April 2017.

According to him, some challenges are bedeviling Nigeria’s power generation capacity. He listed line loss rate and serious electricity theft as the major limitations.
“The line loss rate can reach up to 40 per cent, which is much higher than that of European and American countries, pegged at eight per cent.

“20 per cent of consumers committed electricity theft and difficulties exist in supervision and regulation,” Onanuga said.Earlier in his presentation, the Rotating Chief Executive Officer, Huawei Technologies, Eric Xu lamented the slow development of infrastructure in Africa, noting also that information technology is still at its rudimentary level.

According to Xu, Africa needs a new operating model to provide modern services for its populace. He said Huawei would provide better solutions to Africa, especially to governments that would help in the transformation of the continent.

The Huawei CEO, who disclosed that the firm, usually spends 12 per cent of its revenue on research and development, said countries should prepare to go digital or be left behind in the new phase of global development.

Meanwhile, experts have said that developing countries, including Nigeria, would need to develop requisite skills, huge investment outlay and enabling environment to tap immensely from global cloud technology market.

Cloud computing or technology is a type of Internet-based innovation that shares computer processing resources and data to computers and other devices on demand. It has been estimated by Market and Market, a leading research firm, to be worth over $121 billion.

To technology experts, who gathered at the opening of the 2016 Huawei Connect conference with the theme “Shape the Cloud”, it has become highly imperative for businesses and countries, especially developing ones to migrate to cloud technology and embrace disruptive technologies, including Internet of Things (IoT), 4G, 5G, among others for survival, growth and competitiveness.
At the event, which also has Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, among other government functionaries across the globe attending, it was pointed out that exploring cloud technology could help different industries and countries achieve digital transformation target faster.

Opening the conference, Huawei’s Rotating Chief Executive Officer, Ken Hu, said Information and Communications Technology (ICT) would be the cornerstone of an intelligent world. According to him, countries must strive not to be left behind, especially developing economies.

CrimeRobbers Attack CBN Bullion Vans, Kill Two Policemen - The Guardian by puyol005(op): 4:57am On Aug 17, 2016
Armed robbers yesterday attacked a bullion van belonging to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), at Hawan Kibo hills, near Riyom in Plateau State, killing two policemen attached to the van as escorts.

The bullion vans carrying money and their retinue of armed mobile policemen escorts had left Jos, the state capital in the early hours of yesterday enroute Lafia, in Nasarawa State. The incident was said to have occurred around 8:30a.m.

It was gathered that at Hawan Kibo, immediately after a military checkpoint, the armed robbers in military uniforms, emerged from a bush and attacked a patrol team belonging to the Plateau State security outfit, “Operation Rainbow”, killing a mobile policeman on the spot.

It was at this point that the CBN convoy ran into the armed robbers. The robbers engaged the escort in a shootout, leading to the death of the second mobile policeman, who was in the CBN convoy. The policeman was identified as Sgt. Anthony Jawa, from Mobile Police Squad (MOPOL) 8, Jos.

Spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, Terna Tyopev, told newsmen in Jos that the robbers ambushed the van. He said three other policemen attached to the bullion van were injured.

“It was a clear case of ambush; they were attacked unexpectedly. Policemen escorting the bullion van repelled the attack, unfortunately we lost two of our men on the spot, while three other were badly injured,” he said.

The PPRO, however, stated that the robbers were not able to cart away money from the bullion van “because our men responded vigorously,” adding that the police have commenced investigation to arrest the gunmen.
