Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala pushes for second term, emerges sole candidate for WTO DG

The current Director General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has signified interest to run for a second term.

To this end, Okonjo-Iweala emerged as the sole candidate of the WTO DG.

The organisation formally began the process of appointing its next DG on October 8.

WTO allowed members until November 8 to submit nominations.

This was disclosed in a message to members, by the Chairman of WTO General Council, Petter Olberg.

Olberg said no additional nominations were received by the November 8 deadline.

The statement reads: “Under the procedures for the appointment of Directors-General (WT/L/509), I am required to communicate to members a consolidated list of candidatures received for the post of Director-General immediately after the close of the nomination period, in this case, 8 November 2024.

“I would like to advise members that at the end of the nomination period the only candidacy received for this post is from Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the incumbent director-general.

Ekiti court sentenced three to death by hanging for armed robbery.

On Wednesday, the Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti condemned three people to death by hanging for armed robberies.

Alexander Solomon, 29, Desmond Peter, 29, and Eric Tile, 30, were convicted of conspiracy, armed robbery, and unauthorized possession of guns.

However, the court acquitted a fourth defendant, Promise Shie (27), after determining that there was insufficient evidence to prove his involvement in the crimes.

The defendants were charged with conspiracy, armed robbery, and unauthorized possession of guns, all in violation of Sections 6(b), 1(2), and 3(1) of the Robbery and guns (Special Provisions) Act., Cap. Rll, Vol. 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The allegations include that Alexander Solomon, Desmond Peter, Eric Tile, and Promise Shie conspired to commit armed robbery and unlawfully possessed guns, namely a Beretta handgun, on July 7, 2022, along Ilumoba-Aisegba Ekiti Road in Aisegba Ekiti.

“While armed with weapons, the defendants robbed Okey Jude and Jayeoba Ayobami of their things, including computers, phones, and N540,000 cash.”

Jude told the cops they were drivers and representatives of a marketing organization.

“We departed Ado Ekiti for the Akoko region of Ondo State at 3 p.m., following the day’s transactions. “The defendants stopped us between Ilumoba and Aisegba Ekiti,” Jude explained.

“Initially, we assumed they were vigilante members implementing COVID-19 laws, but at gunpoint, they ordered us to lie face down, searched the van, and took away all of our phones, computers, N540,000 cash, and other items I could not recall.

“We told O’dua Peoples Congress members about our incident at a roadblock. While we were with them, the thieves drove past, and the OPC members chased them while we proceeded to the next police station to file an official report.”

The prosecution, Gbemiga Adaramola, summoned four witnesses and presented two pistols, phones, computers, cutlasses, axes, and facemasks as exhibits.

The naira dropped further to 313.5 against the United States dollar at the parallel market on Tuesday as shortage of foreign exchange, especially the greenback, persists in the forex markets.
The local currency had traded for 310 to a dollar on Monday.
On Tuesday, the naira closed at 199.40 to the dollar on the interbank market, according to Reuters, around the peg rate of 197 to the dollar.
This came just as the interbank lending rate rose to two per cent from one per cent on Monday, after the Central Bank of Nigeria had directed commercial banks to fund their naira accounts ahead of its intervention in the forex market on Thursday.
The overnight lending rates jumped by 100 basis points as the movement of naira cash for forex purchases drained liquidity in the financial market.
The CBN intervenes once a week at the interbank forex market to provide dollar liquidity for some eligible importers.
The naira had plummeted against the dollar last month after the CBN banned dollar sales to Bureau De Change outlets and later stopped daily sales to the interbank market.
The measures were aimed at conserving the nation’s external reserves, which have hit an 11-year low at $28bn.
“The overnight rate went up today to three per cent in the early trade but declined to two per cent after some banks funded their forex accounts,” one dealer said.
The interbank rate mirrors the level of naira liquidity in the banking system.
Traders said commercial lenders’ credit balance with the central bank opened at N978bn ($4.94bn) on Tuesday before the bank called for the funding for forex purchases.
