President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with His Majesty, King Salman, the people of Saudi Arabia and the worldwide Islamic community over the tragic loss of lives in yesterday’s crane collapse at the Grand Mosque of Mecca. As details of the deaths and injuries sustained in the unfortunate incident unfold, President Buhari directed the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to closely monitor developments and take necessary action to ensure the security and well-being of all Nigerian pilgrims. President Buhari, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, also urged all Nigerians to pray for the continued safety of their compatriots who are currently in Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj. He prays that Almighty Allah will receive the souls of those killed in the incident and grant the injured speedy recovery. www.nigerianmonitor.com/2015/09/13/buhari-reacts-to-crane-collapse-in-mecca-mosque/ |

Scores of people were feared dead and others injured when a six storey plaza in the heart of the popular Balogun Market in Lagos was gutted by fire on Thursday. The News Agency of Nigerian reports that the plaza is surrounded by several important business premises, which included the Union Bank, Diamond Bank and the United Bank for Africa. NAN also observed that the plaza, which was being used as a wholesale and retail outlet for shoes and bags, is directly beside and attached to Union Bank building. Investigations revealed that the fire started at about 9am and was battled by a team of combined firefighters from the Union Bank and UBA before the arrival of the Lagos State Fire Service. Some eyewitnesses, who spoke to NAN, said some people, who jumped out from various floors of the burning plaza to escape the fire, were carried away dead. Mallam Hamza Abdullahi, a trader in the market, told NAN that he saw three dead bodies and five people, who were wounded. “People were shouting and jumping down from up stairs. I saw a woman dead with her skull open,” he said. Mrs. Florence Adewunmi, a staff member of the Lagos State Ambulance Mobile Intensive Care Service, stationed at the scene told NAN that some victims had been stabilised and transferred to hospital. “The patients jumped from the second, third and fourth floor and had fractures and varying degrees of injuries. “There were those that inhaled too much smoke, so we gave some oxygen, some Dyclofenac injection; we treated ankle dislocations; we sutured deep cuts before carrying them to General Hospital, Lagos. “So far, we have carried six people to hospital and discharged four after treatment.” One of shopowners, who deals on female shoes, Mr Nonso Christian, told NAN that he came to the plaza at 10am and met it on fire. “I met the plaza on fire and I tried to go in to bring out my goods but I couldn’t because the fire is too much. “My shop is on the second floor and I just re-stocked on Monday. I don’t know what to do because the second floor is still on fire,” he said. Several other shopowners, who were waiting while watching the fire, declined comment. One of them simply said “we are sad, this hard economy. Where do I start from?’’ A security man attached to Union Bank, Mr. Umoru Monday, told NAN that the fire started a few minutes before 9am. www.nigerianmonitor.com/2015/09/04/photos-scores-feared-dead-as-fire-guts-balogun-market/ Cc: Lalasticlala

Nigeria’s Government on Tuesday, donated 20 Hilux vans to Burkina Faso to assist the country conduct its general elections scheduled for October. Mr Bulus Lolo, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered the vehicles on behalf of Nigeria. Mr Barthelemy Kere, President, Commission Electorate Nationale Independent of Burkina Faso received the vehicles on behalf of his country. In his remark, Lolo said President Muhammadu Buhari sent a special envoy to deliver the vehicles in demonstration of Nigeria’s solidarity with the people of Burkina Faso. He added that Buhari approved the delivery of the vehicles in fulfilment of the pledge made by Nigeria in March to assist Burkina Faso with logistics to conduct the elections. “The gesture is to demonstrate to the people of Burkina Faso that Nigeria is solidly behind them,” he said. The permanent secretary said the gesture was also to demonstrate Nigeria’s support and to let the Burkinabes know that democracy remained the key to stability in any country. “No matter how difficult it is, democracy brings the expression and the will of the people to bear ingovernance. “If it worked in Nigeria, it can work in Burkina Faso,” Lolo said and appealed to stakeholders in the elections to eschew violence and work for its successful conduct. “It is important to include all the stakeholders, respect the rule of law, allow the electorate to cast their votes and let the votes count. “All these will lead to the success of the elections,” he added. Receiving the vehicles, Kere commended Nigeria for the gesture, stressing that the vehicles came at the right time. Kere, who said that Nigeria was the first and the only African country to assist his country in the conduct of the polls, pledged judicious use of the vehicles. “The availability of 20 brand new vehicles for the conduct of the October elections is very crucial and important to us. “We appreciate the solidarity and support by Nigeria; Nigeria is the only African country that has so far provided assistance in this regard. “We really need the vehicles to contribute to the success of our elections,’ he said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Lolo was accompanied by Alhaji Is mail Aliyu his counterpart in the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Ambassador to Bukina Faso, Mr DavidBala. www.nigerianmonitor.com/2015/09/02/nigeria-donates-20-vehicles-for-burkina-faso-election/ Cc: Lalasticlala
