PoliticsMilitary To Close Markets In Borno, Yobe Aiding Insurgents by Queennikky(op): 2:28pm On Feb 10, 2016
[img] The Nigerian Army has announced plans to
close designated markets in Yobe and Borno
where traders have been found to be aiding
Boko Haram terrorists with logistic supplies.
The acting Director of Army Public Relations,
Col. Sani Usman, made the disclosure at a
news conference in Abuja on yesterday.
He said the plan was part of measures
adopted to contain attempts by some
unscrupulous elements to sabotage recent
gains recorded by the military in the war
against insurgency in the northeast.
Usman said any breach of the order of the
closure of the markets would be punished and
appealed to residents of the affected areas to
support new measures, aimed at ending the
insurgency permanently.
“It has come to the knowledge of the Nigerian
Army that as concerted efforts are being
made to finally clear all remnants of Boko
Haram insurgents in the northeast, some
unscrupulous elements have been thwarting
the efforts for pecuniary gains.
“They engage in all manner of illegal
commercial activities, such as trading and
smuggling, especially during late hours, all
aimed at sustaining terrorism and insurgency.
“Consequently, the Nigerian military and,
indeed, the Nigerian Army are highly
concerned with these unpatriotic acts .
“The Army is, therefore, taking drastic steps
to curtail this illicit trading with terrorists,
from now on, some markets identified
engaging in this illegal trade with adversary in
Borno and Yobe will be closed,’’ he said.
Usman said the military was making
concerted efforts to consolidate on the gains
recently recorded in the war against terrorists
in the northeast.
Usman also announced the arrest of two
Nigerian Army Explosive Device personnel at
Yola Park, Adamawa, with different kinds of
ammunition and military hardware.
He said the two privates were arrested on
Sunday with the unauthorised military items
to unknown destinations.
“ The items include smoke grenade, over
2,000 live rounds of special ammunition, 50
live rounds NATO ammunition, five magazines
of AK47 rifles, two Browning machine gun live
rounds of ammunition.
“Others include one jack-knife, nine jungle
hats, 11 pairs of camouflage (nine desert and
three woodland green camouflage), one green
beret, two general duty belts, 12 Army T-
shirts, two raincoats and five pairs of desert
boots,’’ he said.
Usman said that in spite of the setbacks, the
military had recently recorded successes in its
determination to flush out the remainder of
the Boko Haram elements.
Usman said troops in different operations in
the northeast had killed many of the
terrorists, rescued hundreds of persons held
hostage and recovered several arms,
ammunition and vehicles in the operation.
He said several hideouts of the insurgents in
remote villages in Borno and Yobe had been
destroyed in the operations carried out by
troops under `Operation Lafiya Dole’.

PoliticsRe: Labour, Allies Protest Hike In Electricity Tariff, Monday by Queennikky(op):
Flets:
This is a government that has not invested a dime in the power sector
This is a government that does not have a clear economic direction nor a power sector roadmap of its own
But their first instinct is to inflict more hardship of the masses by increasing tariff on a sector they have done nothing on

What happens to first strengthening the regulatory agencies towards overseeing the DISCOs?
What happens to ensuring that every home has prepaid meters first?
What happens to increasing the power supply first to justify the need for tariff increase?
Why cant the govt subsidize the power sector instead of petroleum products?
The criminal and fraudulent excesses in the 2016 budget (website update, double dip zungeru projects, Presidential feeding and BMW car fleets and many other unnecessary luxuries) running into hundreds of billions will go along way in subsidizing the power sector for the next four years.

Buhari's govt is fraud and must be resisted as much as possible.
Lol.... Bros you are really angry ooo...... Thanks lala and Co for moving this to FP.... Will buy groundnuts for you guys :Do cheesy
PoliticsLabour, Allies Protest Hike In Electricity Tariff, Monday by Queennikky(op): 6:19am On Feb 05, 2016
LAGOS—NIGERIA Labour Congress, NLC, and its Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, alongside civil society allies, yesterday declared a nationwide protest for Monday, February 8, against the hike in electricity tariff by government, in spite of a subsisting court order and non-improvement in power supply.

During the planned protest, labour and its allies said all offices of the Distribution Companies, DISCOs; Generation Companies, GENCOs, nationwide and the office of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Agency, NERC, would be picketed.Electricity-new

Giving reasons for the protest, labour said: “The due process in the extant laws for such increment was not followed in consonance with section 76 of the Power Sector Reform Act, 2005.

“There has been no significant improvement in service delivery. Moreover, the fact is that most consumers are not metered in accordance with the signed privatization Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, of November 1, 2013, which stipulates that within 18 months gestation period, all consumers are to be metered.

“There is a subsisting Court Order dated May 28, 2015, by Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, in the case of Toluwani Yemi-Adebiyi versus NERC & Orders, that there shall be no further increment until the determination of the substantive suit. The increment at this time negates the present biting and prevailing economic recession vis-a-vis an attempt to further impoverish the poor masses.”

In a statement signed by Mr. Ayuba Wabba, factional President of NLC, labour decried what it described as the 45 per cent increase in the electricity tariff as announced by NERC.

According to the statement, the protest “is a nation-wide protest, meaning that the 36 states of the federation, including Abuja, will be involved in this action. Our members have been sufficiently mobilized and are ready to go. If you are an electricity consumer and you are not happy with the bills electricity companies serve you every month, you are invited to join this protest rally.

“The Abuja rally will start at Labour House, Central Business District at 8.00am before moving to the NERC head office at Adamawa Plaza, Plot 1099, First Avenue, Off Shehu Shagari Way, Central Business District. From the NERC office, the rally will roll to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company at Zone 4. The rally will mobilise from there to the National Assembly.

“This protest rally has become necessary after all effort to make NERC shelve the idea of increase failed. Indeed, rather than see reason with Nigerians, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing has been advancing spurious arguments in justification.”

CultureEmir Sanusi Dethrones Sani Umar-Ganduje As Village Head by Queennikky(op): 1:11pm On Feb 02, 2016
KANO - The emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi ll Monday dethroned the younger brother to Kano state Governor Alhaji Sani Umar Ganduje as village head of Ganduje, Dawakin Tofa local government over alleged financial misappropriation.

The dismissal was sequel to an outcome of investigation by Kano emirate council following petition by unspecified numbers of intending pilgrims from Ganduje village claiming rip off by village head.

Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II personally announced the dethronement of the Governor's younger brother as village head during the council sitting triggered celebration mix reaction in Kano.

The dismissal of the Governor younger brother has set tongue wagging as most respondents described the action as embarrassment to the first family.

Vanguard learnt that Kano emirate council had earlier suspended the village head from office in 2015 to pave way for investigation. The deposed village head was also accused of being using his brother position as Governor of the state by intimidating people.

“I wished to announced the dismissal of the village head of Ganduje in line with the outcome of investigation on breach of public trust and the decision became necessary in the light of his status as a traditional ruler who we expect to be a role model", Sanusi II said.

The dismissal of the Kano state governor's brother came at the time citizens are openly expressing disenchantment with the present administration for its inability to address most of the issue affecting the state.
