US Secretary of State, John Kerry, has arrived Nigeria and is currently at the Palace of the Sultan of Sokoto to discuss counter terrorism efforts in Nigeria. He will also be giving a speech on the importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in battling violent extremism. Kerry will later today visit President Buhari.

Eight persons were burnt to death yesterday following the religious crisis that broke out at the Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata-Mafara in Zamfara state. According to eyewitnesses, a student who is a Christian allegedly made a blasphemous statement about Prophet Muhammad. This infuriated his Muslim colleagues who immediately descended on him, beating him to a pulp.
A Muslim man by the name Tajudeen, who tried to salvage the situation, rushed in and was able to use his car to carry the unconscious Christian student to the hospital.
This infuriated the Muslim students who then went to Tajudeen’s house and burnt it down, killing eight occupants in his house.
The state governor, Abdulaziz Yari, joined hundreds of others to bury the deceased who were killed in the inferno.
Meanwhile a 12-hour curfew in the community starting from 7p.m. to 7a.m. daily has been imposed by the police.

A local official says a suicide bomber detonated explosives at a Cameroon market near the border with Nigeria, killing at least three people and injuring at least 11 other people.
Midjiyawa Bakary,Cameroon’s Far North region governor, said a young man suspected to be from Nigeria detonated the bomb after riding on a motorcycle into the market in Mora at high speed.
The governor says three people were seriously injured and rushed to the local hospital before being transferred to another town for specialized care.
He said that it was possible one of the three victims was also on the motorbike.
Another security source said authorities were convinced that the attack was the work of Boko Haram, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC today arrested Mr. Abubakar Sidiq Usman, a blogger, for offences bordering on cyber stalking. The suspect who is the publisher of Abusidiqu.com was picked up at his Kubwa, Abuja home in the early hours of Monday August 8, 2016 by operatives of the EFCC and is currently being questioned over the alleged offence which contravenes sections of the Cyber Crime Act. The suspect has already been offered administrative bail and would be released to his elected sureties.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), said it has approved the establishment of the University of Africa in Bayelsa State, the 43rd state university in the country.
Mr Daniel Iworiso-Markson, The Chief Press Secretary to the Bayelsa Governor, made this known in a statement issued in the state capital on Saturday.
NUC handed over the letter of approval to Gov. Seriake Dickson when he visited the commission in Abuja, the statement said.
Gov Dickson however, expressed gratitude to the NUC’s Executive Secretary for the warm reception he and his team received when they visited the commission in Abuja.
“The approval of the university followed the formal presentation of relevant gazette law, academic brief, physical master-plan as well as the satisfactory report of the advisory resource assessment visit by the commission, the governor said in the statement
“I am here leading this small delegation to present to you these laws passed by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, establishing a new university working with the private sector.

“It will be run on a public private partnership (PPP), basis. Unlike the existing one, it will not be directly funded by the state.
“Our belief is that for a university to be sustainable, we must create room for private sector participation and involvement.
“The University of Africa, Toru-Orua, is the first of its kind in this country to be established by government with private sector involvement.
“It will be strictly a fee paying tertiary institution that will attract students from across the continent and the globe. “It will be the model as we encourage more private universities in this country”, Dickson said.

Nigerian journalist Didi Akinyelure has won the second BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.
Akinyelure, a business news anchor with CNBC Africa, will start a three-month placement at BBC in London in September as part of her prize. She has been with CNBC Africa since 2013.
The award, established in honour of Komla Dumor, a presenter for BBC World News, who died aged 41 in 2014, seeks to “celebrate African journalism and reward exceptional talent,” BBC says.
Josephine Hazelet, one of the judges who selected Akinyelure said she particularly excelled in telling business stories “which was an area Komla was also passionate about”
Akinyelure said Dumor was someone she admired. “He told the African story with so much passion for the continent, giving a balanced view and inspiring so many.” The first Komlar Dumor Award was won by Nancy Kacungira, a television anchor for Kenya’s KTN television channel.
