Somewhere in Oshodi, Lagos City
They observed him from a distance. They had to act fast before he sees what is on the flash drive.

They had first gained access to the security room with ease, disguising as fellos security officers. With the amount of uniformed personnel involved in the program, that was easy. The more difficult part was to put down other security officers, including members of the armed forces. They did not deserve that, at least not to them. But that was the instruction they were given.

They did that, then Zero started to take out the prime targets: Senator Olamilekan and his P. A. The idea was to kill them and allow Twelve and Thirteen to move in as medical attendants to check the status of the men and retrieve the flash drive. They never thought that the damn P. A will pass the flash drive to someone else.

But now they can get it back.

"Ten, when do we move in? We don't have much time. He may not be alone. "

"Hold on. We can not be seen, you know that's the order. It must be neat, with no suspicion of murder. Zero has said that we can use up to three days analyzing the situation before we move in."

"F*ck Zero! If we can go in guns blazing and get the flash drive, who will care? He is an ordinary civilian. At most we will cover it at the station."

"Nine! Don't do anything rash. Rashness will prove costly. According to Zero's findings, the guy does not even know whats going on. Moreover there is an ongoing investigation on thd deaths of Mr Senator and his P. A. We must not attract any more attention. "

"Damn it, Ten! He is alone! Lets take him out now!"

"Well, he is no longer alone, Nine. Someone has just dropped into the house."

"Keep watch, Eight and Nine. Remember, he wants a clean job."

"Zero is not our boss. Colonel is. Stop making Zero our lord."

"Keep watching." Ten cut off the call.

He took a swipe at his gin and waited. He knew that One to Nine despise Zero because of the way he is favored by the Colonel. But he knew why.

Zero was the smartest of them. He was the most careful of them. Most of all, his instincts are top notch. Those instincts were what he used to expose Two as a double agent and killed him. It was just unfortunate that Colonel trusted Two with those details.

His phone rang again.

"Whats the latest, Nine?"

"He has another guest. Moreover power has been restored."

"And?"

"You won't like what we are about to tell you."

"What?"

"His second guest is Two."

"What do you mean? Zero killed Two. We all confirmed the kill."

"Well, either we were all fooled or he has a twin. We know Two had nobody, so I will take the second option. However, there is no time for that. Two is talking to him."

Ten became tense. "Don't be rash. Just watch what happens there."

"Two knows everything. If he convinces the guy to give him the flash drive, we will be in serious trouble."

"I am going in!"

"Nine! Nine!!"
The phone call ended.

"Bumbling fools!" Ten quickly took his pistol and came out of his car. He called Eight's number.

"Where is Nine?"

"He has gone, Ten. I couldn't stop him."

"Sh*t! Why can't the fool be calm? I am heading your way."

Ten quickly ended the call and crossed the street before jogging down to their location.
He has to stop Nine from ruining everything.

No light again.

Francis opened the door to his flat. Unlike most guys of his age bracket, he had managed to rent a three bedroom flat with two of his friends from the varsity.

Sodiq and Emma are not around as usual. Shayo things.

He sat down on the chair, then decided to take fresh air outside.

As he came outside, he removed his shirt, revealing his flat stomach well managed by hunger. He decided to take the 'Gala' he brought from a snacks vendor on the way home. As he munched it with a bottle of Mirinda, his mind floated to the events of the day.

Na wa o! Make man no die on top hustle! So all these politicians wey dey chop money fit just die like that! Come see as they dey japa!

"Ogbeni Francis! How you dey?"

Francis fell flat on the floor, stunned. He did not see Sodiq come in.

"Guy, wetin do you? Na Mirinda dey make you high?"

Francis stood up, dusting himself.

"I did not see you come in. Where you and Emma go?"

"Omo, I waka reach Iya Rukayat."

"For what?"

"To f*ck Rukayat na! Wetin man wan do for that house again?"

You see this life? I dey here dey worry about politicians dem, this one dey chase woman.

Annoyed for asking the question, Francis sat down and took a gulp of his drink. As he drank, power supply was restored.

Francis went inside and plugged a laptop while turning on the television.

The News that hit the airwaves was about the summit.

"Guy, no be the place where you go do usher work?"

"Talk like a graduate, Sodiq. I acted as a protocol officer, not as an usher."

"OYO for you! Na usher me sabi."

As the news continued about the deaths of Senator Olamilekan, Emma entered the house.

"So its true. Come, how you comot for that place?"

Francis turned his head to see who spoke.

"Emmanuel, welcome. How you dey?"

"I am fine. Thank God you are alive and here. Can I get the flash drive?"

Eh? Which flash drive?

Francis stood up and faced Emmanuel.

"Which flash drive?"

"The one Dr Steven Okeleke gave you. The man who said he wanted to use the toilet."

"Wetin dey happen here?" Sodiq asked, confused.

Good question. How did you know that I have a flash drive?

As Emmanuel was about to reply, something smashed the bulb.

As they bent down, a second bullet went over Francis, hitting the wall.

"I know you don't understand what is happening. But please trust me. You need to follow me now. Both of you."

Francis looked at Emmanuel's right hand. He was holding a pistol.

10pm.
SOMEWHERE IN BANANA REPUBLIC
Colonel Mohammed took his cigar and extinguished it. He had seen the summit crash and burn, the major players in Senator Olamilekan and his P. A Mr Stevens Okeleke die, yet he did not have the report he wanted.
Turning his seat from the beautiful view of the ocean, he faced them.
"Tell me, how many years have I used to train you, Zero?"
"Five years my lord."
"Yet you failed me in this simple task."
"My lord, I beg for ........"
Twack!
Zero staggered, reeling from the effect of that slap.
"I don't want apologies. I want results, do you understand?"
"Yes, my lord."
"If i don't get that flash drive within the next three days, your head will be the least of your worries."
"Yes sir. We have tracked the whereabouts of the flash drive. Its with a simple civilian."
"Then why are you here? RETRIEVE THE DAMN FLASH!"
"YES SIR! PERMISSION TO LEAVE, SIR?"
He waved Zero away, facing the ocean.
Nigeria has been in the hands of these civilians for too long. We need to rescue it from them. We must.
He picked his phone, looked at it for a few minutes.
Must I call him? General will only want good news not bad news. But hiding this from him will be terrible.
As if on cue, his phone rang.
He picked it, his face grim.
"What is this that I am hearing, Colonel? You failed me?"
"We recorded some success, Senator Olami...."
"The Senator was a side mission, Colonel. The contents of that flash drive is very important. We must not allow the contents to be exposed to the public!"
"We are on it, General!"
"Then make it happen! If we fail, everything will be lost! My years of planning and taking all those insults from them bloody civilians will be for nought! Make it happen! Retrieve that flash drive!"
"Yes sir! What about the second phase of the plan?"
"It has already started. I have the Aide de Camp of the Minister of Defence in my payroll. We are going to start in the barracks at Kirikiri. Once we get rid of the scum there, we will target Lord Jaiyeola."
"Yes sir."
There was a minute silence on the line. The Colonel could not bring himself to end the call.
"Colonel?"
"Sir. "
"Don't fail me. Succeed in retrieving that flash drive and you will be a lord in truth."
"Yes sir!"

Chapter one
Somewhere in Lagos City
Francis shuffled his feet. It can be a dull job, working as an usher. Apart from the lights which shone brilliantly inside the hall, everything was a bore. Of course he would not mind if he could get the connections he needed.
The cream of the political class in Lagos were in the building. Major players in business were also here. He needed to be here, to be noticed by someone. He is getting too old to write job applications.

" The new Nigerian Youth must be involved and engaged in the policies of the immediate future if we want to progress as a nation."

Senator Olamilekan's speech was making him feel slightly sleepy. He was not buying what was been sold. His eyes caught a young man signalling to him.
Gracefully, he walked towards the guest.
"Please can you direct me to the toilet."
He looked about and pointed to an opening at the end of the door.
"Please go through the door and turn left. Walk through the aisle until you get to the end. Then you will see the toilet."
"Please I will appreciate it if you took me there yourself ."
Francis nodded.
"Follow me sir."
As the young man stood up, Francis picked a sharp sound in the wind.
The man fell flat, blood gushing from his head.
Francis suddenly felt his feet fail him as he fell on the floor. The pandemonium around him was making it hard for him to process what was happening.
"Young man, Young man!"
He felt a hand on his leg and turned.
His guest was the person trying to drag him.
"Take this flash drive. Protect it with your life."
Are you kidding me? Francis said to himself. But he could not say that to the person asking for the favor, for he was in great agony. This flash drive must be important.
"Please take it. The future of Nigeria is in your hands."
Francis quickly picked it and with some energy, ran towards the exit.
Once there, he picked his bag and ran, ignoring the fact that he was in his uniform.

Debola woke up and smiled. Like all good stories, his travails have ended. He looked at his roommates with gratitude, especially for having Marcus by his side. If not for Marcus, who knows what would have happened?
He quickly fetched water for everyone and had his bath. He had missed home badly and could not wait to regale his story to his younger brother who was resuming next session. Of course, a semester still exists between the two sessions so his brother will have to wait.

"Marcus, good morning."
Marcus used his hands to clean his eyes and looked at Debola.
"This one wey you greet me like you don become my wife, hope I am safe?"
Debola smirked and slapped his head.
"Wetin be that?"
"That's for inferring the wrong thing. What will you say if I told you that I fetched water for you?"
Marcus looked at him and then set his eyes on the water.
"Guy, Wetin dey happen? You win lottery?"
"Yes, Lottery of life and you helped me to win it.
Thank you for this semester, Marcus. Wetin I go do if I no sabi you?"
"Na why persin like me go dey na. No lele, but you don take us out yesterday na."
"It does not mean. You did something that I will not forget easily. Thank you. "
:No problem." Marcus eyes were becoming misty. "If I dey help persin, na just shayo dem go give me, I no dey use to all this kin thing."

"Oga, stop speaking pidgin na!"
"Na your pidgin? Na your mouth I use speak pidgin?"
Debola smiled. "Guys, take it easy. I am going home today."
"We know already...... Who owns this water?"
"That's yours, Tobi."
"What did I do?"
"You fetch for am? Wetin him do?"
"Nothing. I fetched it just as an appreciation. I was making life difficult for him."
"Tah! If na that one, you go fetch two buckets for me."
"I go do am, I just want to appreciate you guys."
"Can't say that I am not impressed, even though it's a small gesture. Thank you."
Marcus rolled himself back to sleep. "Safe journey, Debola. Call me when you don reach house."
"Yes." Debola said as he carried his travelling bags. "Bye bye."
They answered him with muffled voices.
Debola soon found a bus heading to Lagos. As the bus prepared to leave, Debola smiled again.

The end.

Lucia looked at the paper in front of her and sighed. It had been a tough few weeks for her, moving to different places while trying to prove her innocence. Now that she has done that, she was too exhausted to study well for her exams.
Pens up! The invigilator voice broke through her thoughts. Most of her colleagues prepared well for this exams, or at least they had enough time. It's not just fair to her.

As she submitted her papers, she remembered what the Police Commissioner told her. "You are free to go. As it stands this will be a case between the University and Professor Ilesanmi. Your part in this case is done."
Yet she had doubts. True, they will not need her for the case but what about the cult groups? The police had caught most of the skulls, which then meant that the cult war that was breeding suddenly came to a halt. But the few that escaped arrest will try and find out what happened and when they find out, she will be in danger.

"Lucia, how was the exams?" Maureen's voice brought her back to the environment.
Nothing.
"Yes, nothing. I asked how your papers were and you said nothing."
"I am sorry. I thought........"
"Stop thinking about what may not come. Take a breather, Lucia! The ordeal has ended and that's how it is. You have been declared innocent."
"But it cost me my exams and a lot of other things."
"Like him?" Maureen pointed at someone coming towards them. Lucia bit her lip and clenched her fist.
"Lucia, take it easy and give him a chance."
'What chance?"
"A chance to explain himself at least. Maybe a chance at your relationship."
'Please, please! That relationship was non-existant."
"Lucia!"
She walked passed Maureen and kept a straight face. He will not have the chance to beg me.
She walked past him, ignoring her name as Maureen ran to her.
"Lucia, come on! You just hurt the dude!"
"He did worse! Please Maureen, for the love you bear towards me, don't beg on his behalf."
She called a bike and mounted it.
"So you are done with him?"
"Yes, I am done with him. Okada, let's go."

As the bike sped off, she wondered if she could actually dump him. But he also dumped her when the whole thing started. He is not fit to be a boyfriend. Her thoughts floated to Debola and she smiled. At least I have a true friend there.

Korede looked stunned on hearing that. How did the police find here?
He turned to face Esther. "Esther, take Prof away from here. You know our escape route." She nodded and moved away, wordless.
Korede started whistling to his boys as the announcement rang again.
"Boss, na joke be this Abi police land here true, true?"
"It's not a joke, but they are not in front of the door, they must be outside the gate."
"Great Skulls!"
"What is dead can never die." The cry was unanimous.
"Great Skulls!"
"This day is a day of blood. We have been betrayed and followed. The police have decided to show their faces here today. We must show them what we are made of. Great Skulls!"
"What is dead can never die!"
"I see we are ready. So boys, let's prepare to fight them!"
The cry was deafening. Korede pointed to two men and beckoned them to him.
"Follow Esther and make sure that Prof escapes here alive, do you understand?"
They nodded and left. Korede walked to the front, carrying a pistol in his hands.
As he opened the front door, a shot tore through his shoulder and into the face of another person.
"Close the door!" Korede shouted before he felt strong hands push h forward. As he landed on the frontage, the door shut before him.
They have abandoned me. He suddenly realized. Someone had planned this all along and we have been going along with it like fools. He found it so funny that he started laughing.
He was still laughing when they were all round up and taken away. The defeated face of Prof was enough fuel for more laughter.

"Korede, wake up! The Prof is here!"
He stood up with alacrity, checking the time to know how far he had slept. It was 12am and he knew he had not spent long sleeping. It's all for the best.
Today is my day. He kept saying that in his mind as he received Prof with Esther. The Prof had promised to make him the Capone after capturing Bode and added to that he has Esther by his side. Unlike Bode, he had no problem with sharing her with Prof or any of his close members. After all, he no dey marry am.
"Bring him here."
Korede turned and snapped his fingers. Immediately one of his guys went to pick Bode from the strong room they have kept him for most of the day. He was about asking Esther for something when the boy returned panting. No sign of Bode anywhere.
"Where is he?"
Bode looked at the boy, his eyes almost crushing the life out of him. "Where is Bode?"
"He, he is not in the strong room sir. The two guards watching him are sleeping. "
"What? Call Tunde for me!"
"Tunde is missing too sir"
Bode turned round, whistling aloud.
"Better get Bode before I lose my temper. If you can't recover him within the hour, forget about becoming the Capone! "
Bode nodded his head and went into the rooms, whistling to his gang to come out. Today must be my day. Bode will not spoil it for me.
"Boys! Somebody has betrayed me and released our captive! "
He waited for the reactions of anguish to wash over before he continued.
"Bode may have escaped but he won't be far. Anyone who brings him back alive will be my second in command. So boys, go and find him."
Bode turned to face Esther. "Call your girls let them.... "
"Professor Ilesanmi, this building is surrounded and we know you are here. Come out and surrender."

Damn!
Bode felt like hitting his head on the wall, but he was bound so strongly that his movements were limited and heavy.
Tunde brought his dinner some minutes after. Despite the darkness around him, Bode was able to see Tunde's eyes and his face. He noticed the cut ear and the broken nose as Tunde sat down to feed him.
"Tunde, I am sorry for what you had to go through because of me. Please help me out of here and I will be forever grateful." Tunde kept quiet as he fed him.
Bode continued talking until he started choking on his food. Tunde served him water and continued to feed him until it was done.
"Tunde, please help me. "
Tunde looked at him and Bode was starting to be hopeful until that hope was kicked squarely on the face before Tunde walked away.
"I am cursed." He remembered Dozie, the last Capone who he learnt everything he knew. Dozie had always told him not to trust anyone absolutely and never to betray his superiors. Bode showed what he taught about that when he killed Dozie by sending a knife down his chest.

He was deep in sleep when he suddenly noticed that his hands and legs were loose. He was about asking who was about when a hand blocked his mouth.
"Keep quiet. Can you walk?"
Bode nodded.
"Then follow me." Bode could not see his face due to the darkness around him but he was sure who it was

A priority target will mean that the person has personal beef with the Prof and he will be dealt slowly, with his life hanging for hours as the Prof's team of morbid anatomists deal several bolts of pain to the person. Most people run mad during the first day of the torture and it takes days.
Bode started to twist and turn, trying to break the ropes that constrained him. After struggling for thirty minutes he quietly gave up. The ropes were too strong.

Likely Korede's work. He thought as he ruminated on what Korede told him. What will make Prof move against him now? It's true that he had plans for Prof, but he was not expecting to be outplayed so early. Who could have betrayed his intentions? Esther could have lied to Prof about this, but he know that something more or someone more will make him move.
"Kemi? "
He said that with a whisper, his face freezing with the realization of the name. Kemi had stayed long enough to know his disdain for the Prof and he did no favors by punishing her the way he did. Yet he could not find why Kemi moved against him at this point.

Esther walked in at that moment and saw him awake.
"Korede, he is awake. "
"I told you so, the dose was not too much. "
"Who informed on me, Korede? Tell me, you owe me that much. "
Esther bellowed with laughter while Korede hissed.
"I owe you nothing. But I will tell you who did the telling." He looked at Esther and nodded.
"You see, Esther pushed a lot for your capture after you disgraced her like that." He moved and held her by the waist. "But we won't have had any evidence to present to Prof if not for Kemi and Tunde."
"Tunde betrayed me? Why? "
"For various reasons, mostly because he was held down and forced to spit out all he knew. If you had regained your consciousness early enough, you would have noticed that he is missing a left ear."
"You tortured Tunde for her?" He spat.
Korede feigned ignorance of that. "He did try to protect you, I grant that. He lost an ear and a toe. We were about taking an eye when he started to spill out details. Don't worry, I did not tell Prof everything. Your plans to overthrow the cabals behind every cult group is well detailed and as such I will not tell him. I will use that for myself." He smirked as he kissed Esther on the lips.
"Thank you for all your lessons, Bode. I am sure that Prof will handle you properly. Goodbye."

Debola stretched his body and stood up. It was a bright sunny day, clearly a facade that covered all the gloom in the house.
"Marcus, what will you do with the video now? You know that those ladies are trusting us to handle this?"
"I know that, Tobi. Besides, when did it become your concern what happens to Lucia and Debola?"
"I am concerned about you, Marcus. Lucia is not friend of mine and Debola is just tagging along."
"Indeed. I guess I should be leaving then. "
Marcus and Tobi turned to face Debola.
"What did I say that is wrong? To me, you are just tagging along, you have no significance to me."
"Really? And we are roomies."
"That means nothing."
Then I will just return to the hostel before you chase me out."
"Stop behaving like children, both of you. Marcus cut in. No one is chasing you out, Debola. You have made too much of what Tobi said."
"So? Should I wait before he chases me out? " "This guy never liked me for one minute. I prefer......"
"To go out there and die? Don't you know that you are a wanted man? Anywhere you go from now on, you will be hunted by different people. The cult group that killed the professor wants you dead and God only knows who else. I am sure that the hostels will be observed from now to the end of examinations. The exam halls and classes will be observed too. Where will you go? "
"But you allowed Lucia to go."
"That's because she is not as threatened as you. In fact I suspect that they are after her because of you. "
"But I can't stay here for long, especially as the exams have started."
"He has a point, Marcus. What will we do?"
"I have been ruminating on an option."
"Which is what? "
"We take this to the Palace."

"The dose was too high, he won't wake up on time."
"It was not too much, I can assure you of that. See, his eyes are moving."
Bode was trying to make out the voices in the background but a splitting headache was dragging his efforts to the ground.
"It was too much, Korede. Can't you see the way he is struggling?"
"Does not matter, he is here and soon the effect of the drug will wear off. Tunde, make sure that his hands and legs are well tied."
On hearing that, Bode tried to move.
"See, he is awake, Esther. I told you."
Esther and Korede? He could not believe his ears. Korede was supposedly sick and even at that, Esther should not be able to sway him. What happened?
"Boss, if you can listen, then hear me out. Korede seemed to be speaking. I have nothing against you, I am just following orders from above. Prof. wants you here first before he declares judgement on you."
He tried to move his mouth but nothing came out.
"Esther let's leave him alone to regain some form of strength, he will need it soon."
Soon? Will Prof. Ilesanmi see him that soon? The professor usually takes his time with his targets, preferring to allow them to struggle and writhe under the stress of been kidnapped before coming to deliver his terms or judgement. That only changes if the person in question is a priority target of his.
He did not want to become a priority.
