Hello,

Can someone tell me if Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is the same as Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Post a link to the page that talked on AC issues (leaking evaporator, valve, etc)

@Ikenna,

Good Job on that CD you produced, would love to have copies and would definitely send a message to you later for details of getting it.

Thanks for the good work EVERYONE!

Ikenna351: Yes, you actually did disappeared. I tried to reach in several ways, but no response from you.

Actually, I missed you because I was hoping to get the Electric contact cleaner from you. Lol!

Sorry about the accident. We didnt know. If I had your phone number, I probably would have known, because i have most of house members phone numbers, we discuss offline and always in touch. Hope you are well now to drive your Lion and still enjoy all the goodies life offers?

How did you solve the Immobilizer issue with the Lion?

Ikenna
I bought 10pcs of the stuff but used 4 already, will make it up back to 10 and send.

I posted long ago that the BSI reset worked for me.

Will give you a call once am set.

Ikenna351: Bellhousing is what Nigerian mechanics call banjo. Its the housing for clutch components for manual trans: clutch pressure plate, clutch plate/disc & throw out/release bearing. Its also the housing for torque converter for auto trans. It looks like part of the gearbox.

But the transducer is mounted on the gearbox, the differential part of the gearbox, not on the bellhousing. The transducer is the vehicle speed sensor, i believe. The CKP sensor is mounted on bellhousing.

As for the contact cleaner, i will PM you. Thanks.

Ikenna.
OK Thanks.
Car TalkRe: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by RapzyJ: 12:33am On Jun 18, 2013
Ikenna351: Congrats for getting your non-start issue fixed. You are gradually getting the remaining issues fixed.

To the best of my knowledge, 406 has 2 speed sensors: Crankshaft Position sensor and Transducer.

1. The crankshaft position sensor, also known as speed sensor or RPM sensor is mounted on the bellhousing (aka banjo). It senses the engine speed (not vehicle speed) via holes on flywheel and signals to engine ECU, which uses the signal received to power the ignition coil and when to spark (i mean the spark plugs).

2. The Transducer is a speed sensor mounted on the differential part of the gearbox. Its located directly behind the hole that the left side (driver's side) drive shaft goes into the gearbox. Its has 3-wire socket (D8 has 2-wire socket). This speed sensor controls the speedometer on the instrument cluster. It also controls the variable power assisted steering in the V6 (speed sensitive steering). The sensor signals to BSI unit in D9 the vehicle speed, which the BSI unit interprets and indicate the vehicle speed via the speedo on the cluster.

So, i want to believe the faulty speed sensor in your case is the transducer. But, it should also indicate on the speedo (not working properly).

Short circuit to Earth means its loosing ground connection. Pull out the connector, clean it with contact cleaner and push it back. You can also do the same on the RPM sensor, though hard to get to in I4 petrol 406. I would advice that you trace the ground connection on the engine block, from the negative battery head. Loose the bolt holding the connector on the block, clean the surface and bolt it back.

As for your other electrical issues, disconnet the negative battery head again (remember the correct procedure for that) and pullout the fusebox under the steering wheel, completely. Pull out the sockets on the fusebox, one after the other and clean them thoroughly with contact cleaner. Check if any of the plugs or sockets is not gripping firmly on the fusebox contact and use tester screwdriver or anything small enough to bring the socket pins closer, to grip well on the fusebox.

Also, pull out all the fuses one after the other, check for rust or corrossion, clean and push back. If any is broken, replace.

While at the fusebox is out, check to see if water is leaking from that side and entering the fusebox. Its a common problem with 406. If you notice sign of water entering from that sid, get a strong plastic leather bag, place it on top where the fusebox is seated, to prevent water entering the fusebox, pending when you sort out the spot the water is leaking from.

Put everything back and reconnect the battery, following the procedure. I believe the issues will be gone.

Ikenna.
Thanx bro for this in-depth analogy, I respect your patience and painstaking attitude to explanations. I'ld do exactly as you ve advised. This Bellhousing is it the same as the point where the batt -ve terminates on the engine block? If NO, then how can I locate it. Meanwyl I just got a haynes manual will it show me rather than bother you on every issue.

On the contact cleaner, I will send a few cans to ABJ, then you can show it to those pple selling CARB cleaner and stuff like that, they will be able to get it. Thats what I did, only diff is that I did mouth explanation and only one man could understand and he got it for me. You can send me the nearest park to you so I can easily choose which bus will bring them. Either here or in my box [topeyeye1@yahoo.com], pls add ur num so they can give you a call when it arrives - thats how I do it when sending things to other places never sent to ABJ b4 so dont knw if it will be diff sha.

I still have electrical issues, the multifunction display, dashboard display and other elect stuff behaving erratically i.e on and off, when I disturb the fuses under the drivers console they light up and go off again.

From the last scan I had this reading: INTERMITTENT FAULT: Vehicle Speed Sensor- Short Circuit to Earth.

Ikenna351: @ RapzyJ,

Have you tried to reset the BSI or reprogram the key transponder with the keycode?

If the windows wont come down because of the economy mode, have you tried resetting the BSI with the windows up? Just make sure all switches are off, doors closed and bonnet open, before disconnecting the battery after 3 mins of closing all doors and boot. You can open the drivers door after reconnecting the battery (after counting 10 secs) a.d then switch on the headlight and complete the rest of the instructions.

If after resetting the BSI and it still refuse to start, then you will have to tackle the immobilizer issue. You will need that keycode to reprogram the car key. I came accross a site the other day where you can request for your lion keycode, after providing your VIN and of course, pay. They will get the keycode for you and forward to you. Its a 4 digit code. But they are based in UK. You can also get it from any Peugeot dealership that have Service Box account as a dealer. They can get it for you, but not free though.

Ikenna
My Oga thanx so much, I will try the reset this week then update you/the house and from there know whether to go ahead and purchase a pin code.
At PeugeotForum someone with similar issue was advised to do the BSI reset with another person inside the car to carry out the needed fxns since the Economy Mode was disturbing. Will use any of both methods.
I checked out three sites for the pin codes and their prices ranged btw £21 - £25 but at the peugeot dealerships I know their prices will be far higher cos all they know how to do is rip pple. But will check them out first. Around me are NIM and CFAO.
Thanx.

I just saw this forum yesterday and really got interested.

Please I would like to check my vehicle history too thru VIN check, can anyone or all of u do this for me?

Also, I ve seen a lot of unanswered requests for VIN checks and I believe its an issue of too much VIN's to check;

This now prompts me to ask if I/We can be taught how to do this check myself/ourselves in order to help on this forum and as well improve myself/ourselves.

Do you have BSI manual? In the manual, you will find how to recode or programm key transponders, among other things as well. I think i have posted the link to that manual here, but am not sure.

Ikenna351: * Transponder Identifier not received
* Absence of communication with the Engine Management.

I think you should concentrate on the above, because thats whats stopping the car from starting.

Did you switch the car key plip with another? If you did, did you transfer the transponder in the plip? Note that transponder is different from remote. Remote only locks and unlocks the doors. While the transponder works with Aerial around the key switch, under the steering wheel, for your car to start. The Aerial around the key switch recognises the transfer code when the key is around the key switch. The Aerial then signal to BSI unit that the transponder or key is the right key. The BSI now signals to Engine ECU to start and run the engine when the engine is cranked. So if the Aerial didnt get the correct code from the transponder or if the transponder is missing from the key plip, the Aerial will signal to BSI "wrong code" and the BSI will älso signal to engine to engine ECU "wrong code". When the engine ECU receives such signal from the BSI unit, it will lock itself. No matter how you try, the engine will never run untill the BSI receives the correct code from the Aerial via the right transponder with the correct key security code for the code. Also note that the BSI will switch on the immobilizer when it receives wrong code. It was programmed this way to prevent your car from been stollen.

So there is absence of communication with the engine ECU because the transponder is having issue with the BSI unit. Open that plip with a flat screw driver, to be sure the transponder is still there.

If the transponder is still there, you may have to recode the transponder again. You will need the security key code that comes with all BSI lions. Do you have yours? If you do, scratch it. You will find 4 digit codes hidden. Thats the code you will key in while recoding the transponder with PP2000. Without that code, you are in for trouble.

When you clicked on 406 on PP2000 folder, which on the list did you click on? 406, 406R, 406 coupe or 406 coupeR? You should click on 406R, since yours is D9. The 406R means 406 Restyling, that is, face-lift 406. While 406 is the D8. If you click on the 406 for D9, your engine ECU wont appear in the listed ECUs. You have to click on the correct phase of your 406 for your engine ECU to appear for fault reading.

I recently posted a Youtube link on how to open a 406 key plip and transfer the remote stuff and transponder to another case. It will help you to know what the transponder look like and where to find it in the plip.

As for the Battery charge fault, have you tried another fully charged battery. Note that a not fully charged battery will never start an EFI car. All the sensors and ECU needs the required voltage to start the engine. If less, the engine wont start, unless jerk started, i think.

Goodluck.

Ikenna.
Ikenna thanks!
Yes I picked 406R. Yes I once changed the plip (FOB) but I didn't change the transponder to the one the BSI rcognizes which then brought up the keylock sign before I realized what I had done.

Do tokunbo cars come with this key code you are talking about? Since I dont have this key code, what are my options if any.
Yes, I changed the battery to a very fully charged one after disconnecting the previous one for about 2hrs, but the ECONOMY MODE ACTIVE still came on. I rescanned and battery charge was out of the way. I cleaned connectors o the ECU before rescanning and the tool started comm with the ECU then reported NO COMM BTW ECU and BSI; COMMUNICATION ON WIRE DATAB OF THE COMFORT VAN (NOTE --- DATAB) and all other prev faults.

One thing I noticed is that the scan tool chcking the WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTORS.

PLS CHECK THESE OTHER FAULTS:
ENGINE ECU: INTERMITTENT FAULT - Vehicle Speed Sensor; short circuit to earth
Cooling Fan Status.
Fan Unit Relay Control (fan2) high speed
REMOTE INTERMITTENT FAULT - Dialogue with BSI. Incorrect Value
Problemm detected when transmitting the unlock code -- 1.000000

Pls where is the vehicle speed sensor located

Thanx for your time and help.

Hi Ikenna and everyone in the house.

@ Ikenna: I have not installed DiagBox yet, I only installed Lexia3 and PP2000 independently. I initially attempted DiagBox but messed up. After installing the above two I think I should be able to install Diag.

BUT in the mean time I tried using the tool on my 406 D9but couldnt communicate with the ECU.
I maneourvered till I got to the fault finding section and u will see the results below. Pls Advice me on what to do.

Finally, the Economy Mode Active didnt clear after days of disconnectiong the battery. But something I noticed from the result is that the tool mentioned low battery, could that be the cause?

Can the tool reset the BSI for me? The car is still immobilised and now I see the yellow check engine light on on the instrument Cluster.

Ikenna351: To set the ECONOMY MODE ACTIVE off, disconnect the battery head (negative or both) and leave it for more than 1 hour. It should set the economy mode off when battery is reconnected.

Again, find below, the procedure on how to rest BSI unit:

Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off.

Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition.

Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait 15 seconds.

Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 10 seconds (do not open doors.).

Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.

Switch on the ignition and check system's functionality.

Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.

Remove key open & close door test central locking system.

Start the engine and complete the system's check.

Failure to follow this procedure could result in incorrect operation of many BSI related items.

Methylated spirit as commonly sold in the patent medicine stores is a mixture of alcohol with water and a bittering agent (to prevent cheap highness ;-) ). It is not 100 percent alcohol and would leave behind unwanted residue.
Thanks man for that info/education. At least now I know the comp of methylated spirit. But I also think u wont get pure alcohol out there, there must be a mixing somewhere to prevent cheap highness, etc like u said.

OR maybe asking for ETHANOL will be a better bet/option - IKENNA pls take note, and this will definitely be at Drugstores.

Ikenna351: Thats what i have been using, but it doesnt clean contacts well as i would want.

Please, dont bother yourself that much about getting one for me. A friend in US has promised to buy and shipped one to me. But for the meantime, he said i could use Alcohol (Isopropyl or something) as an alternative, which does the cleaning well. That i should find it in drugstores. Me i no understand that one o! Abi make i enter pharmacies dey ask them "Una get Alcohol here?". I could as well enter beer parlour and ask for 1759, treat my self small before taking the rest to the car for the cleaning job. Lol!

Also, something said something about cleaning with Tinner in one other forum. But how safe is Thinner touching the car body paint? Confused, seriously!

Ikenna.
Don't bother about that, I ve all the free time since I work for meself, and if I get something then everybody including myself will be better of since we all get to enjoy it. smiley

Thinner will be good, but it is very strong, poisonous and it will harm body paint if not noticed.

In Nigeria (Lagos), U wont get that in drugstores (chemists) but in BEAUTY shops, its called RUBBING ALCOHOL (now am sure u know it) and there are other brands that are all alcohol based but rubbing alcohol is the original brand/generic name. Just send ur sister, mum, wife/fiancee - a woman.

There is also this ABRO product "AB80" its just like WD40, Q20, LN-4 etc in function but on it is mentioned usage on electrical parts so I also think the fear of future oil stickiness problem should not be there and I mean from all those other prducts too. (I SAW WD-40 AT SHOPRITE AT 1,799naira; and in fact bought Q20 THERE ALSO FOR 1500+ naira etc but for our own LADIPO, I saw there equivalent for 400 naira, & 350 naira - ABRO & LN-4 respectively. ABRO is an American product that has really gained popularity here in LAGOS.

I was at a store today but didnt get the electrical contact cleaner but saw a spray bottle and this idea came into my head:

Fill the spray bottle with METHYLATED SPIRIT and use WITH the option of using a small hand/painters brush on the contacts after spraying. What do you think?

Meanwhile I spoke to a parts seller who offered to get it for me.

I once posted here about immobilizing my car 406, EW10 series, and while reading the previous posts as suggested by Ik, I saw the part that dealt with bringing the car back and noticed I needed to work with the drivers side Windows rolled down but one problem is my car is showing ECONOMY MODE ACTIVE which has stopped all gadgets from working.

Can the PP2000 help me, Is it safe to invite an auto-electrician (called rewire here in Lagos) to connect the window directly or can someone guide me on the appropriate step to take. I enjoy DIY and ready for it.

Thanks.

Hi All,

The oil in WD-40 is not very thick, dries fast, and has something like thinner mixed with it thats why the sticky-ness issue wont be there.

I have seen the electrical contact cleaner somewhere here in Lagos, i will find it out, send the name out and place where I got it. If possible send some to you Ikenna if thats the least I could do for the growth of this thread. grin

Thanks soooo much Ikenna for your speedy reply, my heart has been beating fast waiting for someone to reply! In fact I just stumbled into this thread today while searching for a solution, I was even considering buying a peugeot specific dianostic I saw on a nairaland forum.

I dont know how to reset a BSI (mine does have one), i ve to look for the post that deals with that. Can you lead me to it or should I just read through the entire thread?
