Undependable Independence

The land of man fills with tears and horror,
That cloud the eyes of the living with terror,
The deeds of the land brim with sins and errors,
As our reflection on time refuses itself in the mirror.

Our men, fathers, singing the sorrowful anthem,
Future seeming like it's never gonna know brightness,
Hopes of men get fed on by the hunger of darkness,
As mothers and children join in the verses of sadness.

We are alive but can't be called the living,
Our breath for life, the idiots have taken,
Our bodies they defile as it's theirs for feeding,
While our souls lost its appetite for living.

We die every moment in our depths of heart,
Our days get darker than the darkest of nights,
Shackling in fetters, feeding on wraths,
And locks on lips had only been the tip of iceberg.

Our souls, we own, but theirs for taking,
The cry for liberty, a crime for its thinking,
Happiness, we've heard of, but always found wanting,
While fights for freedom, an otiose in the making.

Allegiance we made to break loose and be free,
Independence was the freedom we seek.
But how do we explicate the aftermath of this,
As we've become our own novel of suffering.

Now we are enslave in our lands by our very own men,
Who made sweats and blood our daily bread,
With no near sight of when soon this inhumanity ends,
As we are left to live in this paradise of hell.

Let's celebrate our mother's birth again,
and reflect on our losses and gains,
Was this how our heroes past have craved,
Is this the Nigeria we've all hoped and prayed?
