A coalition of Nigerian lawyers have come together to sue the Peoples Republic of China over the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic effect on Nigerians.

They are demanding $200 billion as damages for the “loss of lives, economic strangulation, trauma, hardship, social disorientation, mental torture and disruption of normal daily existence of people in Nigeria.”

A statement by the lead counsel, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), whose firm, Azinge and Azinge, is championing the action, said they had concluded pleadings for the class action against the Chinese government, The Nation reports.

Azinge is a former Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Legal Studies (NIALS) and a current member of the Commonwealth Arbitral Tribunal London, representing Nigeria and Africa.

He said:

“The team of legal experts planned a two phase line of action,first is with the federal high court of Nigeria and secondly to persuade the government of Federal Republic of Nigeria to institute a state action against the Peoples Republic of China at the International Court of Justice at the Hague

The Governor of Bauchi state, Sen. Bala Mohammed have tested positive to Coronavirus.

This announcement was contained in a statement released by the Bauchi state government on Tuesday.

The statement revealed that the “result of the six initial tests carried out by the Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) on His excellency, Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, his family and aides that accompanied him to Lagos is out”

“Of the six initial tests carried out, one sample was confirmed positive of COVID-19. The positive result happened to be that of His excellency, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State”

Salihu Umar, a staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, has disclosed that he has tested positive for the novel COVID-19, otherwise known as Coronavirus.
In a series of tweets on Monday, Umar said he is still under self-isolation and that health personnel are making their way to his house for evacuation to Gwagwalada Isolation Centre.

He said that his neighbours and employer had been notified accordingly.

Former Nigeria Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to reports that his son refused to isolate himself upon return. Recall that Atiku had on Sunday revealed that his son tested positive for the deadly disease.

He said he has been moved to Gwagwalada specialist hospital.
But reports on Monday emerged that Atiku’s son attended a popular club in Abuja.

It was also alleged that he attended the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s rally in Ibadan.

But reacting Atiku in a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe debunked the reports.
Describing the reports as a ‘false narrative,’ Atiku said his son returned to the country on 17th March via Switzerland from some business engagements in France and Switzerland and isolated himself when he returned to Abuja.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the ‘perfidious information that his son accessed open location.

The statement reads, “The clinical case attended a private meeting of six (6) persons same day in Lagos, stayed in his private house for the night and took an Aero 5.20pm flight to Abuja on the 18th.

“The case did not travel with his family or any other but travelled alone by Emirates Airline.
The case wore face mask as a precautionary measure since his arrival in Nigeria.

“The case did not show symptoms of infection and voluntarily placed a call to NCDC on arrival in Abuja late on the 18th to inform them he had returned from COVID-19 prone country and desired to be tested.

“On the 19th, NCDC took his blood sample which result came positive on the 20th. He subsequently went into self-isolation to protect his family within his own house.
“Meantime his son has since tested negative while his wife’s result is being awaited. The two persons are currently in self-isolation.

“We urge members of the public to disregard the perfidious information that the case accessed open location. He was not at Play Lounge nor any other club in Abuja as being mischievously bandied about.

“The case neither attended the Friday Jumu’a prayers nor any social gathering until his evacuation to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital on the 20th where he is being treated and managed.

“We thank Nigerians for their prayers and support through this difficult time.
Once again, it needs to be restated that the risk and danger of #COVID19 is real.”

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, has placed a ban on weddings and burial ceremonies as a way of curbing the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
The Governor also announced the closure of public parks, nightclubs and cinemas.

Governor Wike in a statewide broadcast, directed religious houses in the state to temporarily stop open worship.
He said; “This directive takes effect from Tuesday, March 24, 2020, all public parks, nightclubs, and cinemas will remain closed till further notice. The Governor said after due consultations with religious leaders, it was agreed that all religious organizations are to temporarily stop all forms of open worship. Public burial and wedding ceremonies are also banned within the period coronavirus range.”

Governor Wike directed Local government council chairmen to ensure that public burials and weddings do not take place in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, the monitoring team has been constituted by the state government to monitor and ensure compliance of the directives, adding that anybody found disobeying this advice will be made to face appropriate sanctions.

The Nigerian Government has signed a $18.2m grant agreement with Japan to strengthen the capacity of network laboratories of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control for accurate medical and laboratory investigations.
The Nation reports that Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, signed the agreement on behalf of Nigeria.

Agba praised the Japanese Government for fulfilling the promise made by Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, to Nigeria at the TICAD 7 Conference in Tokyo, last year.

Agba described the signing of the grant agreement as “timely”, against the backdrop of the recent outbreak of “the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) that has become a global concern and every country is doing its best to protect its territory and citizenry.”

The minister said that the initiative would help complement the efforts and commitment of the Nigerian Government in the fight against infectious diseases.

He reassured the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Yutaka Kikuta, who signed on behalf of the Japanese Government, of Nigeria’s commitment to creating an enabling environment to sustain the relationship between the two countries as well as the economic development of the Nigerian nation.

Kikuta said the grant Agreement was to support the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to strengthen its surveillance of infectious diseases and improve its capacity for early responses to public health concerns in Nigeria.

The locations, according to him, are the Central Public Health Laboratory in Lagos; LUTH Virology Laboratory; National Hospital, Abuja; University College Hospital, Ibadan; University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu; Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State; UBTH, Benin; and University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said one of its staff in Iran Country Office has tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19).

WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, who made this known on Monday at a media briefing, said the organisation’s affected staff has a mild disease.

Ghebreyesus said that the epidemics in the Republic of Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan was its greatest concern.

He said the WHO’s team arrived in Iran on Monday to deliver supplies and support the government in the COVID-19 response.

Ghebreyesus noted that the number of COVID-19 cases in China continues to decline, saying China on March 1 reported 206 cases to WHO, its lowest since Jan. 22.

“Only eight cases were reported outside Hubei province.

“Outside China, a total of 8,739 cases have been reported from 61 countries with 127 deaths.

“In the last 24 hours, there were almost nine times more COVID-19 cases reported outside China than inside China,” he said.

Nigerian health authorities have atretch out to over 200 people who had first meet with the Italian man who tested positive for the coronavirus and asked them to remain in self-isolation.

The Italian citizen arrived in Lagos earlier this week on a commercial flight from Milan and traveled to the neighboring Ogun state for business. He’s the first confirmed case in sub-Saharan Africa.

Lafarge Africa Plc said it has quarantined 59 people who were in contact with him, a vendor for the company. It added in a statement that its cement factory in Ogun state remains open.

Authorities traced people who traveled with the patient and stayed at the same hotel and asked for them to remain isolated for 14 days while undergoing daily temperature checks, said Akin Abayomi, the Lagos state commissioner for health.

“The numbers keep changing — they are going up gradually,” said Abayomi, adding that he calculates authorities have identified more than 100 people across the country. He said none of those in isolation in Lagos have presented any symptoms yet.

Nigerians have complained on social media about shortages of face masks and hand sanitizer in Lagos and the capital Abuja, with some saying prices have tripled.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, the country’s biggest city with about 20 million people, suspended shaking hands during Mass and called on congregations to reduce gatherings over Lent.

The Italian man who tested positive for the virus is in stable condition and showing signs of improvement, Abayomi said. He denied local media reports that the patient had tried to escape isolation due to poor conditions in the hospital, but said he was moved to another facility because the ward was undergoing renovation.
