Exactly! Maybe Tom is meant to be a DM, but for United, we don't have a traditional DM unless Matic plays as he does not have the energy to take advanced positions during play and still fall back. From watching our matches, I already know that when both Fred and Tom plays, one takes the left side of the midfield and the other the right side. Both take turns to cover the center too when needed. That's why I don't see them as a Dm especially when you look at how Carrick and co play DM back then.

Nowadays sef I feel position on the field is scam. I believe people should pay attention to roles more. Your position may say DM but during the match your role is not exactly that. Just look at them saying Pogba played DM

After investigating the lineups and heat maps as well as reviewing archival footage. My judgement is that this is the most accurate assessment of the situation.

We play a double pivot of 4-2-3-1 which makes determining who is DM very difficult.

Matic and anybody = Matic is DM and the other person is CM

Pogba and anybody = Pogba is CM and the other person is DM

Fred and McTominay = Pure double pivot essentially with Fred covering the left and McTominay covering the right. However in more than half of the games together heat map shows Fred more active in slightly more defensive positions while McTominay more active in slightly more offensive positions.
In many of the games it is just too difficult to tell. In double pivot you usually have 2 CDMs and not the obvious division of labour you might see in a 4-3-3 with DM, CM, AM.

This is why the same whoscored that said McTominay played DM 19 times and CM 3 times also says Fred played DM 21 and CM 6 times, and Pogba played DM 8 times and 2 sub appearances with 0 appearance as CM.
Essentially saying all of them played mainly DM this season and CM very few times.

A DM will have more passes than the CM in a team that builds from the back. He receives the ball from the defenders and distributes the ball. So he is expected to make more passes.

I don't even think McTom can be a proper worldclass DM. Most likely a B2B midfielder.

Brov, McTominay is a B2B midfielder, I mentioned that already. Fred is a better DM to McTominay.. He fairs better as B2B not as a DM. He misplaces passes often.

I don't think I've seem McTom play DM this season. You hardly see him receiving the ball from defenders and building play. It has mostly been Fred and Matic.

Fred don try gan this season o. I think he covers more ground that his team mates every match day.

He has Sha but Fred has played the DM role more than him and faired better.. He's only better than Fred offensively cos he moves higher than Fred while Fred covers the pitch more than.. Ahbeg Fred played really well for us this season. If continues like this and then polishes his other aspect of his game, I'll be darn happy.

He skipped where I mentioned that Fred and McTominay ain't DMs. Just makeshift. McTominay on his own is just a Box2Box midfielder. When Matic was injured he deputised/replaced him there. Same happen when McTominay was injured Fred played DM for us sometimes. He tried but ain't an expert like Ndidi, Partey and rest.
