By Kingsley Omonobi-Abuja. Following the deployment of the Nigeria Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to Kogi state in the wake of repeated kidnappings and robbery attacks on Nigerians plying federal highway to their states, the Police have smashed more notorious kidnap gangs that have terrorized the state and its environs. A statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Donald Awunah said, “During the operation, four kidnapped victims, were rescued at different locations in Kogi State. “In a special intelligence led operation conducted by the operatives of the Intelligence Response Team of the IGP’s Monitoring Unit at different black spots in Kogi State, three members of a notorious kidnap gang that had operated in major cities in Kogi and neighbouring States were trailed and arrested at their hideouts in the outskirts of Egume and Anyimgba Towns in Kogi State. “The leader of the gang who gave his name as Ibrahim Nasarawa led the operatives of Intelligence Response Team to their den where Edward Abutu Amedu was held hostage. On sighting the Operatives, the armed guards who were stationed by the gang to keep watch over their victims opened fire on the Police and the operatives, overpowering them in a tactical operation that saw three members of the kidnap gang suffer fatal injuries while their victim was rescued unhurt.” “Sadly, Two (2) of our men sustained gunshot injuries and are currently responding to treatment in the hospital while the other members of the gang escaped with bullet wounds. “In another coordinated operation based on credible intelligence generated by Operatives of the intelligence Response Team, three members of a dare-devil kidnap gang that abducted Mrs. Mayo Ohemi, Nichodemus Kadiri and Miss Victoria Abdul from Acharu Egume area of Kogi State were arrested and their confession led to the rescue of the victims who were incacerated in the kidnapers’ camp from where they demanded a ransom of twenty million naira. “The rescued victims who sustained various degrees of injuries in the hands of their abductors are now receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital. The arrested suspects are, Ojonimi Negedu 32 yrs, Awodi Ezekiel 26 yrs, and Micheal Sule 21 yrs “This renewed onslaught on criminal elements in Kogi State is designed by the Inspector-General of Police to stem the tide of kidnapping for ransom armed robbery and other criminal activities and shall be sustained until all the criminal elements are flushed out of the State,” the statement said. “IGP Idris warned all criminal elements operating in any part of the Federation to turn new leaf and be counselled or ignore the warning and end up in the arms of the law. “He assured the general public of his determination to provide community oriented service that will ensure active community partnership in crime prevention and control,” it added Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/police-dislodge-kidnap-gangs-kogi-rescue-victims/ |
By Josephine Agbonkhese Women’s rights activist and Founder, Women Advocates Research & Documentation Centre, WARDC, Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, has condemned Tuesday’s verbal attack on Senator Oluremi Tinubu by Senator Dino Melaye during a closed-door session of the Senate and gave, Melaye a 3-day ultimatum to tender “unreserved apology” to the Senate Committee Chair on Women Affairs. Remi Tinubu and Dino Melaye Failure to do so, she threatened, will lead to what she termed “Occupy National Assembly” by well-meaning Nigerians. According to Akiyode-Afolabi, the attack buttressed the ill attitude to the issue of women’s rights protection and gender equality in Nigeria. “Verbal abuse, assault and battery of women is becoming a pattern in our democratic dispensation and it is a reflection of the numerous abuses that women face on a daily basis in our society. “According to the National Demographic and Health Survey Report 2013, 28 percent of women age 15-49 have experienced physical violence at least once and seven percent have experienced sexual violence in Nigeria. These figures are even not representative of the magnitude of the problem. “Between 2003 till date, notable women lawmakers have experienced physical and verbal abuse from men who are supposed to protect their rights. Senator Iyabo Anisulowo was slapped by another lawmaker at the National Assembly while another female lawmaker from Edo State was battered by an aide to an immigration officer at the Assembly Complex earlier this year. Honourable Funmi Tejuoso was also physically assaulted at the Lagos State House of Assembly sometime ago. Then this gender insecurity against Senator Oluremi Tinubu who is not only representing her constituency in Lagos State but also over half of the Nigerian population; womenfolk,” she said in a statement, yesterday. Akiyode-Afolabi also criticized the red chamber for its inaction over recent attacks on Tinubu, describing the silence as a tacit support on violence against women in the country.
