President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said the recent suicide attacks launched by Boko Haram against military and civilian targets were signs that the radical sect was losing the battle to the Nigerian military.

Buhari made this claim in an opinion article published by the Washington Post in the United States, where he currently is on a State visit.

“Already we are beginning to see a degrading of Boko Haram’s capabilities as a fighting force. In recent weeks, it appears to have shifted away from confronting the military directly to an increase in attacks on civilian areas, as we saw only last week when an elderly woman and 10-year-old girl blew themselves up at a Muslim prayer gathering in northeastern Nigeria. We should not be confused by this change, hateful as it is: It does not mean that Boko Haram is succeeding in its aims — it shows that it is losing,” Buhari said.


He explained that the sacking and appointment of new service chiefs and director-general of the State Security Services was informed by the need to re-strategise the fight against Boko Haram. According to him, the new service chiefs will be based in Borno State, where the headquarters of the armed services has been relocated.

He said the scourge of insurgency continued to fester in the past because past administration did not muster enough will to tackle terror.

“Indeed, the failure of governance, it can be argued, has been as much a factor in Nigeria’s inability thus far to defeat Boko Haram as have been issues with the military campaign itself.

“So the path we must take is simple, even if it is not easy: First, instill rules and good governance; second, install officials who are experienced and capable of managing state agencies and ministries; and third, seek to recover funds stolen under previous regimes so that this money can be invested in Nigeria for the benefit of all of our citizens.”

While expressing confidence that the insurgents would be defeated, the President cautioned against expectations of quick decimation of Boko Haram.

He said: “While we work to defeat the terrorists, I ask the people of Nigeria and the world for resolve and fortitude. The campaign we will wage will not be easy; it may not be swift. We should expect stages of success and also moments when it may appear that our advances have been checked. But no one should have any doubt as to the strength of our collective will or my commitment to rid this nation of terror and bring back peace and normalcy to all affected areas.”

Elsewhere in the article, Buhari expressed his resolve to tackle the perennial problems confronting the country. He specifically reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption. He also pledged to instill good governance.

“My determination should not be underestimated in other matters. This includes instilling good governance and tackling the scourge of corruption that has held Nigeria back for too long."

A man, who worked as a cleaner in a building on Tony Oghenejode Close, off Omorinre Johnson Street, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State, has allegedly led a three-man gang to rob two residents ─ a lawyer, Adaku Ufere and her brother, Chukwuebuka ─ in the neighbourhood.



It was learnt that the cleaner, identified only as Jasper, connived with other suspects, Monday Daniel and Joseph Timileyin, to burgle the flat of the residents around 3am on June 23, carting away property worth N650,000.

Some of the stolen items include, two laptops, a wrist watch and an iphone.

It was gathered that the lawyer raised the alarm as the robbers left, leading to Daniel’s arrest by security guards. He was reportedly nabbed with the laptops and was handed over to the police. It was learnt that he later led the police to apprehend Timilehin.

Reports out of South Africa says the preacher who was seen in a photo online feeding his congregation a ‘live snake’ has been arrested by the police.



The photo of Prophet Penuel Mnguni of End Times Disciples Ministries went viral on social media. He allegedly gave his congregation live snakes to eat, telling them it would taste like chocolate.

According to the reports citing Ga-Rankuwa police,the Pretoria based preacher has been arrested on Sunday and is likely to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of cruelty to animals.

Earlier in the week, the South African branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty against Animals (SPCA) had warned the preacher to keep his hands off live animals.

Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Thursday said that his administration would enforce the verdict of the Coroner’s inquest on the September 12, 2014 Synagogue building collapse in consonance with the rule of law.

Ambode in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, said his government would uphold and enforce the sanctity of the law in the state, just as he urged residents of the state to also respect the rule of Law.

“His Excellency hereby reiterates his government’s commitment to uphold and enforce the sanctity of the law in the state and calls on all Lagos resident to respect the rule of law,” the statement read in part.


To this end, he said the Coroner’s verdict of 7th July 2015 made a number of recommendations, which the state government will act upon accordingly.

The governor said that one of the provisions of the Coroner Law 2007 is the provision that empowers a Coroner to commence an inquest to find out the cause and manner of death which occur in an unusual manner.

It would be recalled that over 100 people, mainly South Africans, died when a guest house in owned by the church collapsed.

Ambode noted that consequent upon the collapse at the premises of Synagogue Church building, the state government applied that a coroner’s inquest be commenced into the cause of the tragic deaths.

The Governor said the state government “Will cause the prosecution of the contractor, Engineer Akinbela Fatiregun of Hardrock Engineering Company Limited and Structural Engineer, Oladele Ogundeji who constructed and supervised the collapsed building respectively at the Synagogue Church of All Nations for professional negligence”.

The state government will also prosecute the Synagogue Church of All Nations for failing to obtain building approval before construction, contrary to the provisions of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law 2010.
