CrimeCrimes Of Yesteryears: The Saga Of Wahabi Tailor by Redomi(op): 10:16am On Jan 17, 2019
In the late 60s and early 70s in Ondo, was an initially popular tailor known as Wahabi whose shop was located around the Idi-Aje ( Ud'Aje) axis of town; precisely by the junction of Ijoka and Ododibo.

"Wahabi/Waibi Tailor" as he was popularly known, was from Eruwa, in Ibarapa East local government of Oyo State and came to settle in Ondo - a city known for its legendary hospitality to foreigners - to practice his tailoring trade.

Before too long, Wahabi Tailor had integrated himself so much within the Ondo social circles that he parlayed his fairly good looks and new found social connections to endear himself to many people - particularly, the women.

It was the demands arising from this new social status that he could not maintain from his modest tailoring earnings that drove him to an alternative option of making money: syndicated robbery and stealing of strayed goats, otherwise known as "Kolokun" in Ondo parlance.

Wahabi Tailor used his influence with Ondo socialites and the Police to evade arrest even though suspicion had gown concerning his source of wealth which he lavished on many Ondo women.

The turning point in his popularity seemed to be the audacity in his determination to befriend and eventually win over, one of the wives of the then reigning Kabiyesi!

In one of his syndicated robbery outings at a house in the Surulere area, some of his boys were caught and during a reprisal attack which he personally led, one of the mortally beaten victims, a teenage boy, was able to disclose before he died at the hospital, that his legs were personally broken by Wahabi Tailor during the attack!

Despite this incriminating evidence and several others in the past, law enforcement authorities - with whom Wahabi Tailor had ingratiated himself - were so lax in their arrest and prosecutorial duties that Wahabi Tailor was able to flee Ondo town without being brought to justice!!

That was what Ondo got in return for its welcoming hospitality to Wahabi Tailor from Ibarapa, in Oyo State.
