Culture / Re: Why Is Nigerian Society So Damn Corrupt? by Regular: 3:47pm On Jul 04, 2008
@ Poster,

I presume you are based in the U States or the 'West'.

If you are informed or what we call being 'Current' in the local parlance, you must  have heard of the name SAMUEL ISRAEL that has been in the news lately. The last time I checked, that guy is an American, Caucasian. He duped about $450 million from people under the guise of helping them to invest. I 'll wait for Oprah Winfrey ABC to do a show on him as they do on the so-called Nigerian scammers.

Corruption is not synonymous with Nigeria. Even the Israeli President abi Prime Minister is embroiled in a corruption scandal. Same with Silvio Berlusconi (Italy). The former governor of New York resigned recently over corruption and prostitution racketeering. This is just to mention a few.

I am not holding brief for corrupt Nigerian politicians and their ilks. My point is that corruption is a global problem and should be put into perspective.

Another thing I hear so often is the level of insecurity in Nigeria. Go figure how many people have been shot or stabbed to death in London this year alone. I dnt wanna talk about the suicide rate in Bridgend, Wales, also in the UK.

A beg, make we hear word.

Expel a student for not coming to a 'General Assembly with a bible. And some human beings in this forum are defending the schools action.

I see some lawyers smiling to their banks.

Is this happening on planet earth? And what the hell is 'general assembly'. I thought that obtains in primary and secondary schools.

Does it mean every student of Covenant University is a Christian? Is that school a Covent abi Seminary?

Too many questions! This is outrageous!
Computers / Re: Poor Internet Services By All Nigerian Internet Providers by Regular: 9:01pm On Jul 02, 2008
For a start, I suggest Nairaland champions an online petition or protest against these erring ISP/GSM providers.

This petition/protest note will then be sent to these providers and the Nigerian Telecoms ombudsman: the NCC.

I believe Nairaland Administrator can co-ordinate this.

Lets take some action rather than whinning.

I have said this in a previous post: Nigeria rocks for business! No wonder Indians, Lebanese etc are all trooping to Nigeria.

Guess what amazes me? People complain there is no money in Nigeria. Call some folks back home and they 'll tell you things are hard. These same folks spend 15K monthly for an internet connection that sucks. Can you beat that?

Monthly internet subscription in the UK costs b/w £7 to £15 (unltd download). Do the convertion, £1 = 235 naira.

My take is that Nigerians are been ripped-off! I thought NCC is saddled with regulating this sector. What are they doing.

Why are basic necessities of life seen as luxury in Nigeria?

Same goes for GSM tariff etc.
Webmasters / Re: Which Is The Fastest Internet Connection In Nigeria by Regular: 1:04pm On Jun 17, 2008
Nigeria Rocks!

There is money to be made in Nigeria by smart entrepreneurs.

From what I have read here so far, it costs b/w 45-100 thousand naira to have an internet connection (broadband) installed in Nigera, not 4getting the monthly 15,000 subscription fee.

Compare this with the UK where most broadband providers give free routers and charge b/w 6-10 pounds as monthly subscription (unltd download). The new mobile broadband (just plug ur USB stick and u r up and running) costs 15 quid a month.

Now do the maths, compare the figures for Nigeria and the UK. Not forgetting the quality of service (connection speed etc + customer care).

Don't tell me stories on how businesses generate their electricity in Nigeria etc. How about the high cost of labour in the UK.

Considering the fact that the average monthly minimum wage for a civil servant in Nigeria is about 25K (probably less than this), how many Nigerians can afford to pay 15K internet monthly subscription + about 70K for connection?

The average monthly minimum wage in the UK is about 800 pounds (mainly low skilled jobs) and upto 3,000 pounds or more for highly skilled jobs. This is after tax. If somebody earns £800 a month, s/he can comfortably pay £7 monthly on internet connection. Juxtapose this with the minimum wage in Nigeria vis a vis 15,000 monthly subscription.

Why are the BASIC things in Life seen as luxuries in Nigeria?

My Take is that Nigerians are unduly been ripped-off! And nobody is complaining. Even the govt agencies like NCC, SON et al does not seem to be doing much to protect the interest of Nigerian consumers.

I almost lossed my breath when I heard how much MTN declared as profit recently. No wonder Vodafon is still regretting missing out on rolling out in Nigeria.

There is certainly so much money to be made in Nigeria by savvy entrepreneurs! Men, Nigeria rocks!
