Jackie Appiah Agyemang (born; 5 December 1983) is a Ghanaian actress. For her work as an actress she has received several awards and nominations, including the awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Awards and Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2007. She received two nominations for Best Actress in a leading role and Best Upcoming Actress at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2008.

In the spirit of celebrating womanhood, this post takes a walk down Nigeria’s history to appreciate some women who in one way or the other contributed to Nigeria’s growth and development. In no particular order, meet these Amazing heroines in Nigeria’s history..

Queen Amina of Zaria:
Queen Amina of Zaria is undoubtedly one of the greatest female legends in Nigeria. Her name in Arabic means truthful, trustworthy and honest, a quality she possessed as well as being brave. She was a Hausa Muslim warrior Queen of Zazzau which is present day Zaria. The time of her reign is not certain but it is believed by scholars to be either the mid 15th century or the late 16th century and is said to have conquered as far as Nupe and Kwarafa. The cultivation of kolanuts in her part of the North is attributed to her and the earthen walls that surround Hausa cities are said to have been built by her. Several educational institutions are named after her and her statue stands at the National Arts Theatre in Lagos state.

Queen Idia:
Queen Idia was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a very significant role in the rise and reign of her son. She was the first Woman to earn a title from the Empire as “IYOBA” also represented as “The Queen mother”. She was also the first woman commander [mother of the king] to have led soldiers/warrior to fight and win a war in defense of her Nation. Queen Idia was also the first woman to have taken up the mantle of leadership in terms of socio–economic development of the Old Benin Empire, which was invaded and burnt down by the British military force 1897 during the British – Benin War in Nigeria. She has world class recognition, respect and dignity, and the same woman who is face of the popular Ivory Mask. A brass head was made to represent Queen Idia and placed in her altar following her death.
