The fact that Aso villa was constructed to be practically inaccessible to the public and concealed from public view represents the mentality and state of the Nigerian govt. and her leaders, including their predecessors. The mentality is that government should be disconnected from the people it was meant to serve, that the Nigerian govt. does not belong to the people, that the people should view their government as a mythical embodiment, and that the people should dare not confront nor petition the government for any issue. The clandestine construction of Aso villa itself has caused a disconnect between Nigerians and their government. Many, if not most, Nigerians have no idea how Aso villa looks.

Contrast that to the American white house. When the American white house was constructed, the American founding fathers said that the white house must be constructed in a location that will be accessible to the public and that it must be built in such a manner that is open and obvious to the public--where the public can actually touch and see their building. The founding fathers reasoned that the president is a servant of the people, and that they have every right to have access to the president's residence. Any American (or even any tourist) can walk to the American white house and touch its fence, and can see the building that in actuality belongs to them. They can take pictures and can even take a white house tour, where you are taken inside the white house and given a chance to see the president's office. The psychological effect is that you feel like your government actually represents you and that you can confront it whenever you want.
