The Federal Government , on Monday , agreed to pay a total of N 88 bn for the complete destruction of the remnants of landmines and bombs used during the Nigerian Civil War .


The money is also for other purposes , including compensation of the victims , and the reconstruction of public buildings in some parts of the states affected by the war .



Of the N88 bn , the sum of N 50 bn is for the compensation of the victims while N 38 bn is for the purpose of the destruction of the landmines and rebuilding of public buildings affected by the war, which took place between 1967 and 1970 , mainly in the South -East geopolitical zone and some parts of the South-South and the North -Central geopolitical zones.



About 493 victims of the war were said to have been enumerated.
The affected states are the five states in the South- East – Imo , Anambra , Abia , Ebonyi and Enugu; four states in the South- South – Akwa - Ibom, Rivers , Delta, Cross River; and Benue State in the North - Central .
This agreement was part of the resolution reached by the Federal Government and other parties in a suit filed on behalf of the victims and adopted on Monday by the Community Court of the Economic Community of West African States in Abuja as its judgment .




The suit , filed by 20 plaintiffs , led by Vincent Agu on behalf of other victims and their communities , was marked ECW / CCJ / APP / 06 / 2012 .



The suit is one of the three suits filed by the victims .
The six respondents to the suit , which agreed to the consent judgment , included the Federal Republic of Nigeria , and the two companies contracted by the Federal Government in 2009 to de - mine the affected areas – RSB Holdings Nigeria Limited and Deminers Concept Nigeria Limited .



Parties to the suit also agreed that the terms of settlement “shall operate as full and final settlement of all claims” arising from the suit , marked ECW /CCJ / APP / 06 / 2012 , and two other suits filed on the same issue .



The other suits covered by the agreement are ECW/ CCJ / APP / 10 / 2014 ( Dr. Sam Emeka Ukaegbu & 7 others v . President , FRN & 6 others ) and ECW /CCJ / APP / 11 / 2014 ( Placid Ihekwoaba & 19 others v . President , FRN & 6 others ) .



By the judgment , the Federal Government is to pay the total sum of N 88 bn within 45 days from Monday .

3. Be sure there really is a market for what you want to sell.
One of the biggest mistakes startups make is to assume a lot of people will want to buy a particular product or service, because the business owner likes the ideas or knows one or two people who want the product or service. To minimize your risk for loss, never assume there is a market. Research the idea.
Talk to real potential prospects (who aren't family and friends) to find out if what you want to sell is something they'd be interested in buying, and if so, what they'd pay for the product or service.



4. Plan to succeed.
If you're not seeking investors or putting a huge sum of money into your business, you may not need an elaborate business plan, but you still do need a plan - one that specifies your goal – your destination – and then lays out at least a skeletal roadmap for how you'll get to where you want to go.

5. Don't procrastinate.

They test an idea on a small scale, then build on what works well, tweak what shows promise and discard the disasters.




7. Don't fixate on mistakes or get demoralized by them.
The difference between successful people and everyone else is that the
successful people learn from their mistakes and move on . They don't dwell on failure, blame the economy, curse their bad luck, or blame other people for their fate. If the path to their goal is blocked, they look for an alternate path, or sometimes choose a different, more attainable goal.



8. Learn from others.
Find mentors, join groups with like-minded people, learn everything you can about your industry and what it takes to get from where you are to where you want to be. Attend industry conferences. Take training courses when they are available. Buy courses offered by experts. You'll save a tremendous amount of trial and error by learning from people who have been there before.



9. Think of what you do AS a business.
Keep track of income and expenses , keep business money separate from personal funds, find out what regulations your business needs to abide by.



10. Understand the difference between working for yourself and building an ongoing business.
If you want to build a business, you need to develop systems and methods that allow you to hire other people to DO the work of the business while you plan it. You limit the potential for growth if you don't bring in other people to work for you.



11. Get to know investors. If the business you are starting will need investors to grow, do what you can to find out what investors are looking for and where to find those who might invest in your kind of business. Local angel and venture capital groups are a good place to start – attend meetings they hold or meetings that investors are speaking at.



12. Put yourself out there.
Ask for what you want (in a polite way.) I started my online business by participating online on GE's GEnie online service. When I was ready to send them a proposal to run a small business area, I could not only talk about my credentials in general, but point to places I was already contributing to their service. I became one of the early content providers to America Online because I picked up the phone and made a cold call. I wound up with a new consulting client after I struck up a conversation with a woman sitting next to me on an airplane. Remember, people like to do business with people they know. Get the ball rolling, and keep it rolling by continually reaching out and introducing yourself to new people.




13. Never stop learning and trying new things.
What's profitable now, won't necessarily be profitable next year or 10 years from now. So, don't let yourself fall into the "this is the way I've always done things" rut. Keep your eyes and ears open for new things. Are there newer or better ways to market your products and services? Are customers asking for something you're not offering? Is there a different type of customer you should be targeting? Get answers by reading everything you can about your industry and listening to your customers.

The Vice-President , Prof . Yemi Osinbajo, said that it was impossible for anyone to Islamise Nigeria , as claimed by Christian interests.


Osinbajo, who was speaking in Lagos on Friday during the Greater Nigeria Pastors Conference convened by Apostle Wale Adefarasin and Rev. Abayomi Kasali , explained that the recent uproar over the country ’s subscription to Sukuk Bonds was not justified .



The Federal Government ’ s N100 bn Sukuk ( Islamic bond) , which it plans to use for road construction, became a target of criticism by some Christian leaders in the country , who believed the government was committing the country to an Islamic financial hold .



Osinbajo said , “Part of the problem is the failure of Christian leadership to take its rightful place . We focus our minds on something we call the Islamic agenda . We look for it everywhere as if we are looking for demons .


“But where is the Christian agenda . Are we not entitled to one? We are too divided as Christians to have an agenda . The key to the unity and progress of Nigeria is in the church . ”



According to him , there were no plans to Islamise Nigeria through the Sukuk bond or the country ’s membership of the Islamic Development Bank .
He said that apart from Nigeria , many nations of the world including the United States of America and the United Kingdom had also embraced the system as a result of its progressive nature .



He said , “The Sukuk is an Islamic concept , which enables people to have access to credit . It is essentially like a bond. The US, UK , China , South Africa have all used the Sukuk . Once there is money in the market , let us not get sentimental . The most important thing is for us to use those monies well .

South Africa ’ s murder rate rose by 1. 8 percent in the last year , with over 19 , 000 people killed across the country — 52 a day — official statistics released Tuesday showed .


The eastern province of KwaZulu -Natal , which is hit by political violence, recorded the highest number of murders , followed by Gauteng, which includes Johannesburg and the capital Pretoria .


“Over the past four financial years , murder has reflected an upward trend . We need a combative and decisive policing when we deal with such crimes ,” said Police Minister Fikile Mbalula.


A total of 19 ,016 were killed between April 2016 to March 2017 , up from 18 , 673 the previous year .
“We must not see these statistics just as pure numbers ,” Mbalula told lawmakers in parliament as he delivered the official statistics .


“Behind the numbers are real feelings, real lives , real hurt , real harm , real losses , deaths .”
In the Western Cape , which includes the gang -ridden city of Cape Town, gang -related killings accounted for 19 . 3 percent of all murders in the province. A total of 39 ,828 rapes were reported in the past year — 109 a day — down from 41 ,503 .

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered President Goodluck Jonathan to appear before it to testify as a witness in defence of a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh.


A court official confided in our correspondent that Metuh’s legal team filed the draft subpoena before Justice Okon Abang shortly after the Monday's proceedings.



The court official said the judge signed the subpoena after retiring to his chambers at the end of Monday ’s proceedings.


The source , however , indicated that Jonathan ’s court appearance on Wednesday would be dependent on whether or not he would be served with the subpoena signed by the judge between Monday and today ( Tuesday ) .


It was learnt that the Abuja home of the ex-President was indicated on the subpoena as his service address .
The source said , “I can authoritatively tell you that Metuh’s legal team filed the subpoena before the judge on Monday and the judge signed the subpoena promptly after the proceedings on Monday .

A video has emerged showing a Nigerian living in India being brutalised by a mob , an incident which the police claimed was not connected to racism .



The video , which has gone viral online and sparked outrage , showed some Indians beating up the Nigerian , simply identified as Ahmad , after already tying him to a pole with ropes.



The man could be heard screaming and begging for his life . According to NDTV report , the man was allegedly caught in the early hours of September 24 trying to rob a house at Malviya Nagar in south Delhi , an area which is popular with African students in the city .



The house belonged to one Krishna Kumar .
After the brutal assault , the Nigerian , who was wounded and unconscious with injuries to his head, face, limbs and back, was arrested by the police and charged before a court which sent him to jail . The police said Ahmad was found in possession of a wire cutter and a bag with master keys .




Eyewitnesses allegedly told the police that he had hurt himself when he fell down the stairs while trying to escape .
The Hindu reported that residents of Savitri Nagar agreed that Ahmad was tied to a pole and beaten up by many people around 4 a .m . and that they did not regret their actions .




“He was tied with ropes and beaten up by residents . He was caught red -handed and had been troubling us for the past two months here , ” said Pawan Kumar , a 40 - year -old resident , alleging that Ahmad had committed theft in several households in the area .




The residents rejected claims that the attack was racial , alleging that Ahmad had been terrorising the area for two months . The Hindu reported that the locals produced three videos , all showing Ahmad comitting crimes at different times .



The report said , “In one of them , Ahmad can be seen attempting to break into a house . In the other two, he can be seen running around . ”


“The videos are of two incidents from around September 15 . There have been so many thefts in the area . Once, cash worth ₹ 15 ,000 was stolen, another time , ₹ 2 ,500 and the other time two laptops were stolen. There are more cases but complaints of these three thefts were given to the police ,” said Ravi Kumar , a resident .

No fewer than three members of the National Youths Service Corps, serving in the Assakio area of the Lafia East Development Area , Nasarawa State , have been confirmed dead .


While two of the deceased – Oguntola Wasiu - Babatunde and Danjuma Jamil-Salihu – drowned in a swimming pool , their female counterpart , Memuna Ahmad -Yarwa , died from complications during a child birth .


The woman was a Batch B, Stream II female corps member posted to Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital , Lafia . Wasiu -Babatunde with code number , NS 16 B4044 hailed from Ogun State , while Jamil -Salihu with code number NS 16 B 0175 was an indigene of Kwara State .



It was learnt that the duo , whose bodies were found floating on the bank of Assakio River area on Sunday, were not skilled in swimming .
Investigation by our correspondent indicated that the river had claimed several lives of indigenous farmers in the area over the years .




The state Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps , Mrs . Zainab Isah , said , “I received the shocking news from the Assistant Commissioner of Police in the state . He said two corps members drowned in the Assakio River .”
While expressing sadness over the incident , she , however , prayed that God would grant them internal rest and give their parents the fortitude to bear the loss .



The female corps member was said to have been buried according to the Islamic rites , while the corpses of the male victims had been deposited in a morgue .

Who has an idea where is DLC, Off Ajibode Sasa Road, Ibadan?

Five people were feared dead while scores sustained serious injuries on Saturday following a stampede at the entrance of Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo , the Akwa Ibom State capital .
The incident occurred while football enthusiasts tried to enter the stadium.




The fans , who were at the stadium to watch a match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Chipolopo of Zambia were allegedly beaten by soldiers at the gates of the stadium with heavy sticks.
The stampede occured as the crowd tried to avoid the soldiers ’ sticks.
The bloodstains were around the gate of the stadium .
Policemen and personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps were seen standing beside some unconscious fans .



The Punch Correspondent , who lost N 10 ,000 in the stampede, was also assaulted by one of the soldiers with a big stick .
Some of the fans who spoke with our correspondent and vowed never to go to the stadium again , said they escaped death by the whiskers .

A former United States Ambassador to Nigeria , John Campbell , has described former President Goodluck Jonathan ’s wife , Patience, as being arrogant and flamboyant when she was Nigeria ’s first lady .




In a piece he wrote on Friday , ‘Nigerian President Buhari ’s Sisyphean Efforts ’, and posted on Council on Foreign Relations ’ website , Campbell also wondered how Jonathan ’ s wife became wealthy having spent most of her life as a civil servant.




The ex- US envoy stated , “Patience Jonathan as the first lady was flamboyant, arrogant , and widely disliked . She has yet to be convicted of a crime . However , it is curious how a person who spent most of her career in public service could accumulate an acknowledged $ 35 million in a poor country .”





The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is currently investigating Jonathan ’s wife and has frozen four bank accounts belonging to her , while some property belonging to her have been seized . Among other actions taken by the EFCC was the freezing of Jonathan ’s $35 m .

A pregnant man in Finland born as a woman , who later started a sex correction process to stay with another man has met problems with the Finnish social security system , media reports said on Saturday .



The couple who are in their 30 s wanted a baby and the man had interrupted his hormonal sex correction treatment before getting pregnant .
However , he is now facing problems with the current legislation , which does not recognise his access to social security.




The legislation on parental child compensation in Finland has currently no option that the person giving birth is a man .
The law on “ maternity compensation ” determines that the eligible person must be a woman who has been pregnant at least 154 days .





The future father told the News Agency Lannen Media that the legislation should be amended.
“It is the rights of the child that matter ,” he said .
The pregnancy is now in its fourth month, so the men still have some time to the start of authorised public compensation .





The couple said that the Finnish health care professionals have had no problem with them except that the administrative systems do not recognise a situation where a pregnant person has the male social security number .





Finland maintains a system of social security numbers where men and women have different codes .
American Thomas Beatie was reportedly in 2008 the first man in the world to give birth to a child .



According to the report , since 2008, there have been reports about men who had given birth at least in Germany, Austria and Britain , a situation which other countries across the globe kicked against .

The Enugu State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the alleged killing of a man for stealing a tuber of yam in Amorji Nike community of Abakpa axis in Enugu.

The command ’s spokesman , SP Ebere Amaraizu , said in a statement in Enugu on Saturday that the incident happened on Oct. 4.

Amaraizu said that the incident took place at Amorji Nike community of Abakpa axis in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state .




“It was gathered that a man whose identity is yet to be established was allegedly beaten to death on Oct. 4 at Amorji Nike , Enugu for stealing a yam tuber .




“His corpse was dumped in a compound from where it was recovered ,’’ Amaraizu said .



According to him , investigations have commenced, while two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident .
“The arrested suspects are currently helping police operatives in their investigations ,’’ he said

A groom in Singapore decided to teach his cheating bride a lifetime lesson by playing a footage of her alleged infidelity in front of their wedding guest .




According to Mirror , their loved ones and guest were stunned when they saw the bride ‘behaving intimately’ with another man on the screen .








The video as reported began with the bride and the groom’s relationship so far but suddenly , there was a clip of the bride with another man going into a hotel room and afterwards had intercourse in the room.









According to sources , the groom who is a wealthy businessman hired a private detective to trail his wife -to- be few weeks before their wedding . Perhaps , he had suspected that she was cheating on him .







After the video was played at the wedding , the
’embarrassed ’ and ‘humiliated ’ bride was said to have ran out of the wedding hall.
It was not clear whether the ceremony had taken place by the time the groom got revenge on his ‘cheating ’ partner .







The story became viral after the secret detective hired by the groom , Miss Zhuo granted an interview with a Singaporean media on the issue .




Zhuo said she expected her client to call off the wedding but she was amazed when she received an invitation to their wedding .



She claimed she spent six weeks monitoring the fiancée before reporting back on her alleged findings to her client .
She said it was only when she saw the tape of the woman appear at the wedding that she understood the groom’s motivation .





The footage was played in front of “many ” guests , Ms Zhuo said .
The couple and the alleged lover have not been named .

A Zimbabwean man known as Tichaona Kambarami was alleged to have killed his 40 -year - old sister , Letty Kambarami , after seeing her with a younger boyfriend .



According to Zimnews , the Police spokesperson , ASP Tendai Mwanza , said they have launched a manhunt for the 27 -year - old.
Mwanza said , “on September 1, at about 10 pm at Kambarami village , Tichaona went to Letty’s home and found her with a boyfriend , Kindness Mhosva, 33 , of Chiweshe Village.




“Tichaona took a wooden log intending to assault Mhosva, but he managed to escape. This did not go well with the deceased resulting in a misunderstanding with her brother .




“The accused struck Letty on the head and she died on the spot. The accused fled the scene and a relative known as Fungai Kambarami made a report at Murehwa Police Station . Detectives from Murehwa Criminal Investigation Department attended the scene and found the log, but no arrest has been made.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were at the National Assembly Complex , Abuja , on Tuesday , to serve the embattled lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District , Senator Dino Melaye , the petition by his constituents to recall him .



The officials , however , met Melaye ’s office ( Room 2. 13 , New Building , Senate Wing ) locked. Our correspondent sighted his aides, who could have received the notice on his behalf , around the Senate chamber .




Four ‘Ghana -Must – Go ’ bags , believed to be containing the recall documents and court papers , were sighted at the door to the office .
While some of the INEC officials waited at Melaye ’s door , others took positions at various entrances between the office and the Senate chamber .

While the officials waited , Melaye was in the chamber for the day ’s plenary .
The senator, however , hurriedly left the chamber at about 1 .45 pm , while the session was ongoing, rushed into a waiting car at the main entrance of the complex – the closest to the chamber – and drove off.

A two -year -old grandson of a former Kenyan governor has died after being mauled by dogs at their residence in Kenya .

According to report , the two- year -old boy was playing outside the home of ex- Governor Nderitu Gachagua when six stray dogs from a neighbouring compound attacked him .

The child was rescued by neighbours and taken to the hospital, where he later died .

According to Kenya ’s Nation , the case has already been taken to the police by family members .
Nderitu Gachagua died in February 2017 of pancreatic cancer while receiving treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London .

As at the time of his death , Gachagua was the first governor to die in office and was accorded a state burial in a ceremony attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader , Raila Odinga .

The Corps members of the CDS Drug Free and Quality Control (DFQC) Akure South Local Government Area in Ondo State, took to the street to sensitise the public on drug abuse, quality and to avoid self medication.

They taught with fanfare, they advise the public to visit medical practitioners and to avoid self medication. They also reiterate their advice for the youths to avoid hard drugs.
