Started from a concept above in CATIA

Then exported the MODEL to 3ds MAX for proper lightening and rendering as shown above

Did some final HDR adjustment in Photoshop

You will notice the MATERIAL/MAP BROWSER popped out once again. Double click on the BITMAP icon again and load the same picture again (but preferably you should create a black and white of the picture in Photoshop, for best bumps).

Click the small tea pot icon as highlighted above for rendering.

Here you have your rendered image with bumps. This is the simplistic way of achieving a bumpy output from 3ds max. You can save your rendered image by clicking on the small diskette icon on top left corner.

Then, Unchecked the REAL-WORLD MAP SIZE. as shown below

You see how nice the material appeared?

Now, go back to your MATERIAL EDITOR and scroll down to SPECIAL PURPOSE MAPS and make sure the BUMP is checked and set the value to 10 (10 is BEST for achieving realistic bump). Click on the icon NONE in front of the value 10.0, as shown below

Click the small icon as in image below to make the assigned material visible on the PLANE i.e if it isn't visible already.

This is where the real thing starts!.

Take a look at how bad and disoriented the material appeared? Not to worry, we have to do small mapping.

Click on the MODIFIER icon on the top right corner as shown above.

The click on the MODIFIER LIST drop-down and look for UVW MAP as shown below

Click on the small icon with the arrow head.

Notice from the image below, the material slot changed to something like the image of the roof I loaded. Again, notice the blank icon in front of our color shade changed to M, meaning a certain material has override the default color. Reduce your reflectivity and glossiness to zero, cos architectural material shouldn’t be shining like a metal. Take note of how dull the material slot 01 is after reducing glossiness and reflectivity to zero. Then, select the PLANE and click the small icon with arrow head to assign the material to the PLANE

Launch 3ds max and click on the geometry icon, the little icon I highlighted in red. This should followed by creating a simple plane. Click on the PLANE icon as highlighted in red >>> click and drag anywhere within the viewport to specify the dimension of the PLANE.

The blue object in the view port below is the plane we created. Now, press M from your keyboard and the MATERIAL EDITOR stack will pop out. The first slot in the Material Editor should be active. For this tutorial, am going to be using Mental Ray rendering engine inside 3ds max. Before this is possible, you must check the setting of your assign renderer and material editor. You must make sure Mental Ray is selected. Scroll and locate the MAIN MATERIAL PARAMETERS>>> click the blank icon in front of the COLOR. This will give you the option of loading a picture from your computer into 3ds Max slot.

After clicking on the blank icon in front of the color shade,

another stack will pop out as presented above. On the MATERIAL/MAP BROWSER locate STANDARD and double click on BITMAP, this will allow you load any desirable image of roofing sheet on your hard drive or any other file location on your computer.

The above roofing sheet image is the long span roof picture I intend to apply to my plane. You can use any image of your choice, be it short span or long span. Make sure you select “Use image’s own gamma”, as highlighted above. Click open and see the image loaded on your material slot.

Really love the level of bump pattern details on ur roof, been trying to generate nice bump patterns fo my roof model but it always turns out less than I expected.

Let me create a mini tutorial with screenshots and post it here. . .very straight forward and easy steps to achieve nice texture and bumpy output. Expect it later today, I'm kinda fixed at the moment. But before then, here are what you need.

1. 3ds Max software installed on your system (2009 and above version)

2. Export your model from revit to 3ds Max using either .dgn, .dwg or .3ds file format. Better still we can create a simple roof in 3ds max i.e. if you can model in 3ds max or We can use a simple plane in 3ds max to demonstrate a "BUMPY" material.

Or a YouTube video?

civilianism:
so Mr. Rhino, what is d best modelling software that u have or using now that give a very good final reallistic rendering.

Best is relative, cos every software out there has downside. First thing you need to ask yourself before anything is what type of modeler are you and who are your clients?

If your client demands you using a particular software for his work before he want to visualize it in native language without having to convert it or he want to merge with another existing design, then you have no choice than doing so. E.G If I give you a house to design and instruct you to use revit, cos I'll want to export the BIM to robot structural analysis for finite element analysis then you MUST do exactly as I wanted because I'm the one paying you or you have to do alot of convincing, telling me why I should forego revit for another package. But if you are going to work in an organization that uses archicad for example, then before you pass the interview session you have to demonstrate to them your proficiency in using archicad, else someone will get that job of yours.

If you want to be an authority like me, then you have to learn as much as modeling software as possible. But if by saying best you want to know the software I'm using, then I'm sorry I use upto 10.
