Senator Bola Tinubu, Former Governor of Lagos state The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has said it never released the case file of former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bolaji Tinubu ,to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officially, saying the means through which the commission got the file is a mystery. CCB South West Federal Commissioner, Dr. Ademola Adebo , disclosed to THISDAY in an interview in Lagos that if the bureau never gave the commission Tinubu’s case file, the outgoing Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Bello Adoke “has to explain how he obtained the file from the bureau. It will be recalled hat, shortly before 2007, the bureau had initiated an investigation into the foreign accounts, which Tinubu was allegedly operating during his two-term administration, to establish whether the former governor actually violated any of its 14 codes as stated in the Constitution. Adebo, who was in Lagos last week alongside other members of a seven-man panel verifying assets of the public officers in the state, also hinted that the bureau could not conclude investigation into Tinubu’s foreign account because of immunity. According to him, “there was a case in the bureau while Tinubu was Lagos State Governor. The case then was a case of having a foreign account. The case went before the Code of Conduct Tribunal and somehow it was inconclusive due to the fact that he had immunity then.” The commissioner acknowledged that the bureau was aware of a media statement that the Attorney-General had taken Tinubu’s case file to the EFCC, thus wondering “how the file got to the commission because the file was not officially released to either the EFCC or the AGF.” He further queried that what “has to be clarified here is whether the said case file was that of the EFCC or CCB. But remember that the information we collate are constitutionally protected. We do not have the power to give it out to anyone or any organisation. “So, if the Attorney General is claiming that the CCB gave him the file, he has to explain how he obtained it. One of our problems is that people occupying offices want to use the office to gain popularity rather than build that office to become a stronger institution. We will rather strengthen our individual position rather than the office,” he added. Adebo acknowledged that Tinubu’s case “was inconclusive then according to information available to us because Tinubu could not be prosecuted because of immunity”. Asked whether Tinubu’s case can be revisited, the commissioner said if the case “can be reopened, it will have to be reopened only by the prerogative of the bureau not by either bowing to the public pressure or because of the need to do justice in the matter.” According to him, “it is not only Tinubu. We have so many pending or inconclusive cases. But now that we have a full complement of the Bureau, we are now looking at all those pending cases and asking ourselves the possibility of reopening the cases.” He added that the bureau “has not really addressed that issue because we want all political air surrounding it to die down. So, once the case gets to the CCT, then the Attorney General can take over. “I can assure you that we are not going to shy away from taking decisions that will be in the interest of Nigerians. What the bureau will not tolerate is for some people to use it for political purpose,” thus acknowledging that the AGF has constitutional power to take over any case. He said the AGF “has constitutional power to withdraw or take over any case in the country, but he cannot take over my own constitutional power because the CCB is not under the Attorney General. If he tries to do that, we will go to court and seek judicial interpretation. “We are an autonomous body and only the National Assembly has oversight power over us. So if, the Attorney General said he has taken over the case from the EFCC, he has the right to do so. But that cannot be done in the name of CCB,” Adebo explained. |
Perhaps the most mysterious warning light on your car's dashboard is the "check engine" light, which can illuminate seemingly for no reason whatsoever and lead to an unexpected bill just for diagnosing the cause. However, it is possible to diagnose, and sometimes even fix, the cause of this warning light without paying a mechanic. Your car's check engine light is linked to its on-board diagnostic system, which measures functions such as engine speed, ignition timing, fuel mixture and sometimes, the timing of gear shifts. It then uses that information to identify problems in those functions that could affect emissions and performance. There is a wide range of problems that will cause the light to illuminate, ranging from minor to major, so it's important to determine the cause promptly. Before you find yourself in a situation with the check engine light illuminated, read your owner's manual to understand why it may illuminate and if it has different warnings to help you understand whether the problem is minor or more serious. In many cars, a check engine light that flashes rhythmically -- not just flickers on and off -- indicates a severe problem that needs immediate attention, while a steadily illuminated light indicates a less serious problem. [Click here to check auto rates in your are Once you thoroughly understand how your check engine light operates, here are three strategies you can try before paying your mechanic for a diagnosis. Remove and reinstall your gas cap, and make sure it's tight. Because the check engine light is associated with your car's emissions system, it will recognize if there are fuel vapors leaking from around your gas cap and set off the warning light. A loose or improperly installed gas cap is the most common reason for the light to illuminate. If the light does not go out after checking the gas cap and the car seems to be running fine, don't assume that was not the problem. It can sometimes take a few trips for the system to reset. Get the engine's diagnostic code from an automotive pro for free. If you own a General Motors vehicle with OnStar, contact an OnStar adviser who will read the code from your car remotely. Many auto parts stores and franchise oil change and transmission-service shops will read the code for free, though they may pressure you to do the repair with them. If you get a code read by one of these shops, ask for the code itself -- usually a single letter, followed by numbers -- and then use the shop for the repair if you are confident of the work. Get the code yourself. For $50 to $100, you can buy a diagnostic-system code reader at your local auto parts store or online. Some newer system scanners can connect right to your smartphone, such as the GoPoint GL1. [The New Cars Owners Love Most] Many cars have some method of displaying the trouble code, usually using the key and either rotating it between the accessory position (the position where you can power the radio and other accessories without the car running) and the "on" position (without starting the car) a specific number of times. With some, you keep the key in the accessory position, and push and hold the trip odometer and reset buttons. To find instructions, do an Internet search on the year, make and model of your car plus the words "check engine code" and "manually." Once you know the code, you can research what it is associated with on websites such as OBD-Codes.com (for on-board diagnostics codes) or ALLDATAdiy.com. In some cases, you can get instructions on how to repair the car yourself on those websites. Keep in mind that, if there is a problem beyond a loose gas cap, the trouble code produced by the diagnostic equipment is usually associated with more than one problem. Ultimately, it's good to work with a trusted mechanic who can deduce the cause of the problem in your car. |

FG Compensates Berger over N64b Cancelled Project By Chinedu Eze 27 May 2011 Views: 436 Font Size: a / A Aviation Minister, Mrs Fidelia Njeze The Federal Government has concluded plans to compensate Julius Berger, a construction firm, with the sum of N270, 070, 803 for the cancellation of the N64 billion Abuja airport second runway project awarded to it. Inside sources said that it was part of the contract terms that if the project was cancelled or taken away from the company, the said amount would be paid to it for what the company invested in the project before the contract was awarded to it. It could be recalled that the controversial project was finally cancelled by the Federal Government after the National Assembly discredited the project as being too highly inflated. Although the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) stoutly defended the project sum, the lawmakers insisted that the cost of the project was outrageous. A source from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) told THISDAY that the compensation fees is justified because the company had spent money in carrying out studies on the project, including soil texture, location and other technical details, in addition to the design and architectural designs of the project. “It was in the agreement that in case the company was denied the project, it must be compensated with that amount. That is the way it is done all over; it is not peculiar to us because the organisation had already spent huge amounts of money on it before it was cancelled”, the source said. BPE had said that the runway was to cost about N64 billion because it was not an ordinary runway that was planned to be built at the Abuja airport, claiming that it was a kind of runway that could be compared to the best in the world. But the National Assembly severely criticized the project and said that it would not approve it. In a meeting between the Senate Committee on Aviation and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the then Chairman of the Committee, Senator Anyim Ude, after listening to explanation from FAAN, justifying the project, asked, ““You mean that it’s costing Nigeria over N63 billion to do a runway, not a new airport? You can come to us with the details later, but we want you to justify why Nigeria should spend about N64 billion, not for a brand new airport; against the background report that it cost 6.99 billion in Djibouti , even Gombe here, N7.5 billion, India, Helsinki 2.14 billion… Tell us why Nigeria should spend this much on the project.” |
Letter to Nigerian Parents HELLO I HAVE NO IDEA WHO WROTE THIS BUT IT MAKES INTERESTING READING & FOOD FOR THOUGHT Friends,Let me add the benefit of my time as a student and then resident in the UK - and I live in Lagos now. The first thing that I discovered about UK-born, white, English undergraduates was that all of them did holiday or weekend job to support themselves - including the children of millionaires amongst them. It is the norm over there - regardless how wealthy their parents are. And I soon discovered that virtually all other foreign students did the same – the exception being those of us status-conscious Nigerians. I also watched Richard Branson (owner of Virgin Airline)speaking on the Biography Channel and, to my amazement, he said that his young children travel in the economy class -even when the parents (he and his wife) are in upper class. Richard Branson is a billionaire in Pound Sterling. A quick survey would show you that only children from Nigeria fly business or upper class to commence their studies in the UK. No other foreign students do this. There is no aircraft attached to the office of the prime minister in the UK – he travels on BA. And the same goes for the Royals. The Queen does not have an aircraft for her exclusive use. These practices simply become the culture which the next generation carries forward. Have you seen the car that Kate Middleton(the lady soon to marry Prince William) drives? VW Golf or something close to it. But there's one core difference them and us(generally speaking). They (even the billionaires among them) work for their money,we steal ours! If we want our children to bring about the desired change we have been praying for on behalf of our dear country, then please, please let's begin now and teach them to work hard so they can stand alone and most importantly be content, and not having to "steal", which seem to be the norm these days. "30 is the new 18", which seem to be the new age for testing out the world in Nigeria now. That seems to be an unspoken but widely accepted mindset among the last 2 generations of parents in Nigeria. At age 18 years, a typical young adult in the UK leaves the clutches of his/her parents for the University, chances are, that's the last time those parents will ever play "landlord" to their son or daughter except of course the occasional home visits during the academic year. At 21 years and above or below, the now fully grown and independent minded adult graduates from University, searches for employment, gets a job and shares a flat with other young people on a journey into becoming fully fledged adults. I can hear the echo of parents saying, well, that is because the UK economy is thriving, safe, well structured and jobs are everywhere? I beg to differ and I ask that you kindly hear me out. I am UK trained Recruitment Consultant and I have been practicing for the past 10 years in Nigeria. I have a broad range of experience from recruiting graduates to executive director level of large corporations. In addition, I talk from the point of view of someone with relatively privileged upbringing. Driven to school every day, had my clothes washed for me, was barred from taking any part-time job during my A-levels so that I could concentrate on studying for my exams?! BUT, I got the opportunity to live apart from my parents from age 18 and the only time I came back home to stay was for 3 months before I got married! Am I saying that every parent should wash their hands off their children at age 18? No, not at all, of course, I enjoyed the savings that I made from living on and off at my parent's house in London - indeed that is the primary reason for my being able to buy myself a 3 bedroom flat in London at age 25 with absolutely no direct financial help from my parents! For me, pocket money stopped at age 22, not that it was ever enough for my lifestyle to compete with Paris Hilton's or Victoria Beckham's. Meanwhile today, we have Nigerian children who have never worked for 5 minutes in their lives insisting on flying "only" first or business class, carrying the latest Louis Vuitton ensemble, Victoria 's Secret underwear and wearing Jimmy Choo's, fully paid for by their "loving" parents. I often get calls from anxious parents, my son graduated 2 years ago and is still looking for a job, can you please assist! Oh really! So where exactly is this "child" is my usual question. Why are you the one making this call dad/mum? I am yet to get a satisfactory answer, but between you and me, chances are that big boy is cruising around Lagos with a babe dressed to the nines, in his dad's spanking new SUV with enough "pocket money" to put your salary to shame. It is not at all strange to have a 28 year old who has NEVER worked for a day in his or her life in Nigeria but "earns" a six figure "salary" from parents for doing absolutely nothing. I see them in my office once in a while, 26 years old with absolutely no skills to sell, apart from a shiny CV, written by his dad's secretary in the office. Of course, he has a driver at his beck and call and he is driven to the job interview. We have a fairly decent conversation and we get to the inevitable question - so, what salary are you looking to earn? Answer comes straight out - N250,000.00. I ask if that is per month or per annum. Of course it is per month. Oh, why do you think you should be earning that much on your first job? Well, because my current pocket money is N200,000.00 and I eel that an employer should be able to pay me more than my parents. I try very hard to compose myself, over parenting is in my opinion the greatest evil handicapping the Nigerian youth. It is at the root of our national malaise. We have a youth population of tens of millions of who are being "breastfed and diapered" well into their 30s. Even though the examples I have given above are rom parents of considerable affluence, similar patterns can be observed from beokuta to Adamawa! Wake up mum! Wake up dad! You are practically loving your children to death! No wonder corruption continues to thrive. We have a society of young people who have been brought up to expect something for nothing, as if it were a birth right. I want to encourage you to send your young men and women (anyone over 20 can hardly be called a child!) out into the world, maybe even consider reducing or stopping the pocket money to encourage them to think, explore and strive. Let them know that it is possible for them to succeed without your "help". Take a moment to think back to your own time as a young man/woman, what if someone had kept spoon feeding you, would you be where you are today? No tree grows well under another tree, children that are not exposed to challenges, don't cook well. That is why you see adults complaining, "my parents didn't buyclothes for me this christmas", ask him/her how old-30+. Because of the challenges we faced in our youth, we are where and what we today, this syndrome-my children will not suffer what I suffered is destroying our tomorrow. Deliberately reduce their allowance or mum-don't cook on Saturday till late afternoon or evening-do as occasion deserve. I learnt the children of a former Nigerian head of state with all the stolen (billions) monies in their custody, still go about with security escort as wrecks. They are on drugs, several times because of the drug, they collapse in public places. The escort will quickly pack them and off they go, what a life. No one wants to marry them. Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.- Henry Ford. Hard work does not kill, everything in Nigeria is going down, including family settings. It is time to cook our children, preparing them for tomorrow. We are approaching the season in Nigeria where only the RUGGED, will survive. How will your ward fare? If the present generation of Nigerian pilots retire, will you fly a plane flown by a young Nigerian pilot, If trained in Nigeria? People now have first class, who cannot spell GRADUATE or read an article without bomb blast! Which Way Nigeria!, Which Way Nigerians!! Is this how we will ALL sit and watch this country SINK? |
The label certainly appears to fit in the minds of British police. Scotland Yard, the UK's police force, has given Obama the security codename 'Chalaque' for his visit this week to the United Kingdom, the UK Daily Mail reports. The term is reportedly a Punjabi word meaning someone who is too clever for his own good, according to the newspaper. |

S’West PDP Leaders Beg Obasanjo Not to Retire 20 May 2011 Views: 1,657 Font Size: a / A Former President Olusegun Obasanjo By Imam Imam in Lagos and Chuks Okocha in Abuja Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the South-west have appealed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to retire from active politics, warning that the party would be doomed in the zone without his “fatherly guidance”. Various party leaders who spoke to THISDAY Thursday said the last few weeks have been the most difficult for the PDP in the South-west as the party is now effectively on the fringes. A party elder from Lagos State who attended the meeting said Obasanjo was reminded that he was the zone’s most important link to the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and if he departs from the scene now, the party should be considered as dead. The PDP suffered tremendous losses in the South-west in the last two years from onslaught launched by the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). From having control of five states in 2003, it lost all the states after last month's elections. It had earlier lost Ekiti, Ondo and Osun following tribunal verdicts. In the National Assembly election held on April 9, PDP won only five seats out of the 71 available in the South-west, while of the 18 Senate seats, the party won only one. This figure contrasts sharply with that of 2007 when PDP won 47 House of Representatives seats and 15 in the Senate. Meanwhile, elder statesman and former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Rafiu Jafojo, and Princess Gloria Adebajo-Frazier, Thursday said they were not aware of the reported plans by Obasanjo to retire from active politics after the election of a Deputy National Chairman which is zoned to the South-west. But THISDAY stands by its story, following further confirmations from high-ranking members of the party. One of them, a former governorship candidate, said he was surprised the story was just getting to the media as the former president had told him several times that the 2011 general election would be his last as an active politician. Speaking in a telephone interview, Jafojo said even though he met Obasanjo along with other Lagos PDP stalwarts in Abeokuta last weekend, the issue of his retirement from politics was not discussed. He urged journalists to cross-check their facts and avoid being used by mischief makers to cause disaffection among senior citizens of the society. Meanwhile, the ripples caused by the zoning of key political offices by the expanded national caucus of the PDP remain unabated as the party has threatened to wield the big stick against members of the House of Representatives who are threatening to jettison the approved zoning formula. This is coming on the heels of the South-east’s meeting to review the crisis and adopt a position. But it has said whatever happens, “we remain loyal party members”. THISDAY was reliably informed that the Acting National Chairman of PDP, Dr. Harilu Mohammed Bello, held a closed door meeting with the leadership of the House of Representatives moments after they amended the voting system in the House to secret ballot. The National Caucus and NWC of the party had agreed to the following zoning formula: Senate President (North-central); Speaker (South-west); Deputy Senate President (South-east); Deputy Speaker (North-east); National Chairman (North-east); Secretary to the Government of the Federation (South-east); Senate Leader (South-west); House Leader (South-south); Senate Chief Whip (North-west); and House Chief Whip (South-east). According to a source at the meeting, Bello said that as far as the party is concerned, it has no special or anointed candidate for any of the key offices at the National Assembly, explaining that its position and interest is to ensure that the party directives are adhered to. “We, as a party, have taken a position based on a wide consultation and it is for PDP as a party to enforce that position. There is no special interest, but the efficacy of party supremacy,” he reportedly said. It was gathered that Bello was forced to hold the meeting when it became glaring that the members of the House of Represen-tatives were not responding positively to the entreaties made by Vice-President Namadi Sambo to them in a meeting organised by the outgoing Deputy Speaker Bayero Nafada. At the meeting, Bello was quoted as threatening that the party would not watch and see its decision rubbished and warned that any member that goes contrary to the position of the party on zoning would be sanctioned, no matter their status in the House. THISDAY gathered that Bello told the House leadership to revert to the old voting pattern of electronic voting and voice affirmation. According to the source, “it was because of this that the duo of the Chairman, House Committee on House Rules and Business, Hon. Ita Enang sponsored a bill to revert to the old House rules”. The Southeast caucus of the PDP yesterday in Abuja said that the zone was yet to take a position on the zoning of the office of the SGF and the Office of the Deputy Senate President to it. Addressing newsmen, the South-east Zonal Secretary, Mr. Vincent Okpaleke and the Zonal Financial Secretary, Tony Caesar Okeke, said that the zone would soon meet to take a position. Okpaleke, however said “we are part of PDP, whatever the national leadership of our party agrees we believe will be in the interest of our people. We are going to be loyal and abide by that”. According to him, “the meeting will be attended by PDP Governors, members of the National Assembly and other important stakeholders from the zone. Any decision taken at this meeting would be binding on the zone”. He hinted that the zone may be asking for “grade A” ministerial positions such as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Minister of Works and Environment. “The zone has never been treated well. You see, that is why we want to take the whole issue holistically, it is not just about speakership or party chairmanship that rightly belong to the zone or the issue of SGF or deputy speakership. “The entire southeast will be meeting very soon and they will come up with a position that will ultimately address these issues. You can be assured that our position will not be myopic and will address these issues in such a way that it will not affect the unity of the nation,” he said. The Zonal secretary announced that there would be a retreat to be jointly organised by the party and the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) for the newly elected lawmakers |

Articles HOME > NEWS Obasanjo to Quit Politics By Imam Imam 19 May 2011 Views: 14 Font Size: a / A Former President Olusegun Obasanjo One of Nigeria's foremost nationalists – as well as one of its most divisive personalities – former President Olusegun Obasanjo has indicated interest to finally retire from active politics. He told Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains from Lagos State who visited him at his Ota home last weekend that he had had “enough” and would leave the political scene for the younger generation. Should Obasanjo go ahead with the retirement plan, he is expected to give up his position as the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP which he has held since the end of his tenure as President in 2007. Obasanjo, who last weekend met with a delegation led by elder statesman Rafiu Jafojo, Mr. William Oganga, and Princess Gloria Adebajo-Frazier, said the only developoment delaying his retirement is the need to have a new Deputy National Chairman of the PDP whose position has been zoned to the South-west. "Baba made it clear that as soon as a new Deputy National Chairman of the party emerges from the South-west, he will hand over party affairs to the person and concentrate on his ambassadorial assignments on the African continent. "He also said his priority now is to ensure that someone from Ogun, Ondo or Ekiti emerges to fill the position. He told the delegation that all the past leaders who have held the position are from Oyo, Osun and Lagos States, so to ensure fairness, he wants someone from one of the states that has not produced the Deputy National Chairman to do so", a source at the meeting told THISDAY. The role Obasanjo played in the re-zoning of the position of speaker of the House of Representatives to the South-west as well as the endorsement of Hon. Ajibola Muraina for the job is believed to be fuelling rebellion within the PDP as North-west lawmakers have vowed to truncate zoning. Besides, it is believed that Obasanjo deliberately picked the terminally ill Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as his successor on 2007 so that power could return to the South in a short span. Of the seven former Nigerian leaders alive, only Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari have remained in active politics, with both men serving as BoT chairmen of their respective parties. Buhari contested last month's presidential election on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) which he lost to PDP's Goodluck Jonathan. Obasanjo's continued activities in the political scene have divided opinion in the country, with some urging him to pick up a role of an elder statesman in the category of former leaders such as Shehu Shagari and Abdulsalami Abubakar. Considered one of the luckiest Nigerians around, Obasanjo rose to national prominence in 1970 when he accepted the instruments of surrender from the Biafran army which attempted to divide the country. He served as a federal commissioner of works (now minister) in the Yakubu Gowon regime and rose to the position of Head of State following the assassination of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed in 1976. He entered the history books when he handed over power to a democratically elected government in October 1979. In 1999, following his release from prison by General Abdulsalami from incarceration by the Sani Abacha regime over his alleged involvement in a coup, he was elected the President under the PDP where he served for two terms. , Kenyan Olympic marathon champion Wanjiru dies On May 16, 2011 · In Sports , Reigning Olympic marathon champion Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya died overnight after falling from the second floor of his home in the town of Nyahururu, police said Monday. “He fell from the balcony of his home after a row with his wife. We found him lying on the verandah with a broken skull,” local police chief Jasper Ombati said. “The theory we are getting from his wife and a watchman is that he came home drunk from the bar and he was accompanied with a woman. When his wife asked why he came home with a woman, an argument ensued, and that is when he fell off the balcony and died,” Ombati said. Advertisement: Story continues below “He was pronounced dead at the Nyahururu district hospital,” he added. He said police were also investigating whether the runner may have jumped rather than fell from the balcony. “There is also another theory that during the argument, the wife ran away from their bedroom and as her husband ran after her, she locked the stair-case door prompting Wanjiru to look for an alternative way out… and that is when he jumped off the balcony to the ground and died,” he said. “These are the two theories we are investigating. We cannot conclusively say he committed suicide, or that he jumped down and died accidentally. All these are conclusions we will make once the investigation is completed,” the area police chief said. “For now we are going on with the investigations. Wanjiru?s wife has recorded a statement with us and their watchman as well. The woman Wanjiru went home with is at the station with us, assisting detectives with the investigations,” he added. Wanjiru, who over the past few months appears to have had marital problems, was involved in a serious car crash in January. He was scheduled to appear before a Nyahururu court next Monday, accused of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. |

JUSTICE AT LAST Court puts smiles on victim of police brutality ••• Awards N100m compensation By CHRIS ANUCHA & OLA AGBAJE Thursday, March 17, 2011 •Nnamdi Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Justice has finally come the way of a Lagos-based businessman, Nnamdi Anyaogu, who was shot by a Police Constable (PC), Osakiodunwmhe Otaigbe, from Ikotun Division. The harmless and armless civilian was shot at Cele Egbe in Ikotun area of Lagos metropolis on October 2, 2009. The victim was last week awarded N100 million as compensation, by Justice Muhammed Idris of the Federal High Court, Lagos. The damages were against the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Police Commissioner, who were both variously liable for the offence commited by Otaigbe, with Force number 4323336. The trial judge, while giving his final judgment in the joint application for the enforcement of fundamental rights of both Felix Anyaogu and Nnamdi Anyaogu awarded a sum of N100,000 and N100 million, respectively, to them. While Nnamdi was shot on the right leg, his brother, Felix, was harassed, arrested and handcuffed. The battle to get justice for the two brothers was undertaken by the Lagos Defence and Assistant Project (LEDAP), and Equal Right Trust (ERT) which brought the application for the enforcement of their rights to freedom of movement, life and dignity of person before the court and pursued same to a logical end. Nnamdi fell victim to the trigger-happy Constable, when he went to explain the circumstances of the two international passports allegedly found in the custody of Felix, who had been handcuffed like a common felon by policemen. No sooner he finished his explanation that the two passports actually belonged to him and his aunt, than Constable Otaigbe barked at him to move away or got shot. Surprisingly, however, barely few seconds after he made to leave as ordered, the cop corked his AK 47 riffle and fired at him, shattering his right leg. He fell, writhing in pains in the pool of his blood, and later became unconscious. Reviewing the case of the applicants, Justice Idris was satisfied that a grave injustice had been committed by the police and ordered the authorities to pay N100 million compensation to the victim. Besides, the court also restrained the respondents and their agents from further harassment or intimidation of the applicants in any manner that would infringe on their fundamental rights as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. The court also ordered the police to apologise to the applicants in a national daily. In addition, the court directed the respondents to pay the outstanding N257,760, medical bill and all subsequent medical bills that may be incurred by the second applicant. It is instructive to note that policemen from Ikotun, where Otaigbe was serving when committed the condemnable crime abandoned their victim at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he received treatment for several months, before he was ejected by the hospital when he could not pay. Following the court pronouncement, which also found Otaigbe culpable and attracted serious penalty against the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, both LEDAP and ERT called on the police force obey the court order as a responsible and law abiding institution. LEDAP’s national coordinator, Chima Obiagwu, told Daily Sun that immediate and prompt compliance with the court order would go a long way in promoting the course of justice, while calling for stiff sanction Otaigbe to serve as deterrent to others, who may be tempted to behave in like manner in future. On his part, the victim thanked the human rights groups that stood behind him as long as the legal battle lasted. According to him, without them, there was no way someone like him would have got justice in the country. He noted that the court had further proved that the voiceless and the poor could get justice when they come to the court. Daily Sun had in its Thursday, November 19, 2009, reported the shooting of Nnamdi by the Constable. Since the incident, Daily Sun had been monitoring the developments, especially, the court proceedings, till the time the judgment was delivered on March 8, 2011. |

Articles HOME > NEWS Dosunmu: I’ll Scrap LASTMA, KAI, Others 05 Apr 2011 Views: 57 Font Size: a / A Dr. Ade Dosunmu, Lagos PDP Guber Candidate By Jaiyeola Andrews As the countdown to the governorship polls begins in Lagos State, gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, has promised to disband what he tagged anti-democratic organisations put in place by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) if voted into office. Dosunmu listed the anti-democratic organisations to include Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), Central Business District (CBD), and Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force (LE-SOTF). In an interactive session with some of the party leaders and supporters at his campaign office, Monday, Dosunmu said his administration would scrap the controversial toll gate plazas along Lekki Peninsula- Ajah/ Epe road, in Eti- Osa Federal Constituency of the state. According to the PDP governorship candidate, the listed organisations as well as Toll gates had been a major threat on the hapless masses, and an extortionist strategy against indigenous people of the state, foreigners, and Lagos residents. He observed that the perceived oppressive organisations and the controversial toll gate plazas are obstacles to smooth flow of traffic and environmental management in the state. As the commercial nerve centre of the country, Dosunmu said Lagos State deserves to be governed by a government that has the interest of the people at heart, and not the ruling ACN that harasses, intimidate and extort the hard earned resources of the citizenry through its anti-democratic organizations. "LASTMA, KAI, CBD, LESOTF and the very expensive toll gates are seriously causing unimaginable disaffections which cut across both the well meaning affluent Nigerians, corporate citizens and the people at the lowest cadre of the economy, as some of the officials of these organisations are on daily basis allegedly using their respective agencies as instruments of terror to the civilian populace who form the bulk of the electorate that elected the successive ACN-led government into power in the past 12 years. |

Articles HOME > NEWS Intercontinental Bank Set to Merge with Access Bank 28 Mar 2011 Views: 91 Font Size: a / A Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, CBN Governor By Kunle Aderinokun and Obinna Chima The stage appears set for the fusion of Access Bank Plc and Intercontinental Bank Plc as the management of both banks disclosed Sunday that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purpose of their merger. A statement that was jointly signed by the Company Secretary of both banks and made available to THISDAY, explained that the business combination would result in the emergence of one of Africa's largest financial institutions. It stated that the MoU signing followed the completion of a competitive, rigorous and transparent selection process and the approvals of the Board of Directors of both banks. It would be recalled that the CBN had in 2009 declared Intercontinental bank and eight other banks unhealthy and were said to be dangerously close to collapse. The exercise was geared towards sanitising the banking industry. This led to the removal of the Chief Executives of the affected banks including that of Intercontinental bank; Mr. Erastus Akingbola. The apex bank had fixed a June deadline for the recapitalisation of the rescued banks The statement explained: “The business combination will offer unique opportunities for both institutions. The Retail banking operations of Intercontinental Bank coupled with the Wholesale and Commercial banking strength of Access Bank offer a high degree of synergy and complementarity; unique in the Nigerian banking environment. The synergy from combining the two banks will therefore create a formidable competitor with scale to rival the top banks in the industry. “We note that the careful consolidation of the banking sector is essential to the future stability and growth of the Nigerian economy. The combination of Access Bank Plc and Intercontinental Bank Plc is of systemic importance and safeguards a significant degree of capacity in the Nigerian banking sector that would otherwise be lost in the event of non resolution of any of the rescued banks. Critically, the Transaction provides a safe harbour for the depositors of Intercontinental Bank Plc and the seamless continuation of banking services to Intercontinental Bank's considerable customer base.” THISDAY check showed that as at Friday, Intercontinental Bank had a total market capitalisation of N27. 913 billion and a share price of N1.48 per share. At the end of last year, its shares were 86 percent free float and 14 percent held by the directors. On the other hand, the share price of Access Bank Plc stood at N8.64 per share as at Friday, with a total market capitalisation of N154.554 billion. The statement further stressed that the resulting footprint of the combined entity and its increased access to low cost deposits combined with Access Bank's recognised competence in commercial banking, robust balance sheet among others, will create a market leading platform from which the combined entity can capitalise on growth opportunities. In accordance with international best practices, it also pointed out that the process will be subject to necessary Shareholder, Regulatory and Judicial approvals. Reacting to the development, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Access Bank, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede informed Reuters that the two institutions were a perfect match. But he however declined to give details on the terms of the deal. Intercontinental is now the second out of the rescued banks to officially announce its recapitalisation plans after Union Bank last week said it had agreed to a $750 million deal with a consortium led by the African Capital Alliance private equity firm. There are strong indications that other rescued banks such as Afribank Plc, Bank PHB Plc, Finbank Plc and Oceanic Bank International Plc that have also held talks with potential investors may announce their preferred suitors this week. |
Articles HOME > NEWS Sex Can Kill You, According To US Study 23 Mar 2011 Views: 4 Font Size: a / A Sex could kill you Sky News Online Sudden bursts of physical activity - such as having sex or jogging - significantly increase the risk of having a heart attack, a new study has found. People are 2.7 times more likely to have a heart attack before or straight after sex Researchers in the US say the chances of cardiac arrest during or immediately after such exertions are particularly high among people who do not get regular exercise. It has long been known physical activity can cause heart problems, but the new study by Dr Issa Dahabreh of Tufts Medical Centre in Boston helps to quantify that risk. His team analysed data from 14 studies looking at the link between exercise, sex and the risk of heart attacks or sudden cardiac death. They found people are 3.5 times more likely suffer one of the two when they are exercising compared to when they are not. If you take 1,000 people, each individual session of physical or sexual activity per week can be associated with an increase of 1 to 2 cases of heart attack or sudden cardiac death per year. And they are 2.7 times more likely to have a heart attack either during or immediately after sex compared with when they are inactive. Jessica Paulus, another Tufts researcher who worked on the study, said the danger was relatively high, but that the period of increased risk was brief. "These elevated risks are only for a short period of time (one to two hours) during and after the physical or sexual activity," she said. Because of that, the risk to individuals over the course of a year is still quite small, she said. It was speculated that former US vice president Nelson Rockefeller died during sex "If you take 1,000 people, each individual session of physical or sexual activity per week can be associated with an increase of 1 to 2 cases of heart attack or sudden cardiac death per year," she said. She said it was important to balance the findings with other studies showing regular physical activity reduces the risk of heart attacks and sudden cardiac death by 30%. "What we really don't want to do is for the public to walk away from this and think exercise is bad," she said. She said it meant people who did not work out regularly needed to start any exercise programme slowly, gradually increasing its intensity over time. |

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) Monday threatened to bomb Lagos and Abuja over the alleged failure by President Goodluck Jonathan to address what it called key issues affecting the Niger Delta. It also threatened to simultaneously carry out attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta. A statement by MEND's spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, said the bombing was being planned to drive home its opposition to the president’s failure to address the challenges of the Niger Delta. Gbomo, however, said before executing the planned bombing, MEND would issue what he tagged advance warning, which he said would be followed by a final warning at least 30 minutes before the eventual attack. He advised Nigerians to keep away from political gatherings or similar events, adding that the last Independence Day celebration bombing in Abuja would not have been so fatal but for the “callousness” of security operatives and “ignorance” on the path of the public. He threatened that anyone who ignores this warning does so at his own peril. The statement read in part: “Due to our commitment to avert avoidable loss of lives, advance warnings for immediate evacuation as previously will be issued and a final warning thirty (30) minutes prior to the blasts, after which will follow a statement of claim in line with our modus operandi. “The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) advises the general public in the strongest of terms, to steer clear from all political gatherings or meetings of any sort. It should be recalled in our last Independence Day bomb blast that it was due to the callousness of the Nigerian security services and ignorance of the general public that led to the fatality. Again, anyone who chooses to ignore this warning does so at their own peril as the aftermath of these blasts will be catastrophic.” The statement also said MEND would toe the path of the North Africans by commencing a revolution that would cripple the Nigerian oil industry with the intention “to flush out all Western oil companies operating in the Niger Delta region and the simultaneous bomb blasts never anticipated in the history of this country”. |
Veteran opposition leader, Mahamadou Issoufou was declared winner Monday of presidential polls ending a year-long military junta in Niger, which remains deeply poor despite massive uranium reserves. In his fifth shot at the country's top job, the 59-year-old leader of the Social Democratic Party won 58 percent of the vote, electoral commission head Gousmane Abdourahamane said at a ceremony in Niamey. According to AFP, former Prime Minister, Seini Oumarou, 60, took 42 percent of the votes in Sunday's run-off poll. The election in the vast desert nation, which has a history of coups, is aimed at returning democracy after former president Mamadou Tandja was ousted by the army in February 2010. Observers from the African Union and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and France lauded the country for its peaceful election and said the poll was a model for the rest of the continent. The former colonial power said acceptance of the result was "essential". The run-off brought political champions from opposite ends of the political spectrum face to face, Issoufou being an historic opponant of Tandja's regime with Oumarou the self-proclaimed "heir" of the fallen president. The Social Democratic Party chief, who led after the first round on January 31, strengthened his push for the presidency by forging alliances, especially with Hama Amadou, another former premier under Tandja who garnered 19 percent in the first round vote. During the election campaign, both candidates promised to dissolve parliament and organise legislative elections for a more representative assembly in the vast, landlocked country on the edge of the Sahara desert. And they vowed to tackle the poverty that afflicts some 60 percent of the population, find protection against cyclical food crises, and ensure an equitable distribution of the wealth from uranium. Voter turnout was just over 48 percent, down from 51.5 percent in the first round. The provisional results announced Monday must be sent to the constitutional council which has 15 days to proclaim the final outcome. Issoufou, a longtime opponent of Tandja's regime, is due to be sworn in on April 6. Since independence from France in 1960, Niger has been wracked by coups and faced a Tuareg rebellion in the north of the country. And in recent years it has become one of the bases for Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which has been responsible for kidnappings and killings of Westerners in the region. The Federal Government Monday launched and officially presented the Senior Secondary School Curriculum drawn up by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) as approved by the National Council on Education (NCE), to the public. Minister of Education prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, who launched the curriculum in Abuja, said the new curriculum developed by NERDC is taking effect in schools by September 2011. “The Senior Secondary Education Curriculum (SSEC) is expected to be implemented in September 2011 beginning from Year 1 with the gradual phasing out of the old curriculum,” she said. Rufa’i said the array of the new 34 trade/entrepreneurship subjects embedded into the new curriculum structure will enable students to overcome poverty and generate employment for the country. She therefore called on all players in the curriculum implementation at all levels to live up to expectation in the challenges ahead, adding that the effective implementation of the curriculum will enhance sustainable educational development. “As I launch this new SSEC, I am very sure we in the education sector are embarking on a process and journey that will certainly turn the developmental fortunes of our dear country positively around towards attaining the noble ideals of Vision 20:2020. Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma said the new curriculum was an answer to the directive given to the research institute by NCE to review the old SSEC in 2006. “It is our collective hope that graduates from SSEC in June 2014 will have been equipped for higher education and at the same time possess the relevant technical, vocational and entrepreneurship skills,” Obioma said. According to him, the first public examination, based on the new SSEC will be conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and others in June 2011. |
