Crime / How Central Bank Officials Defrauded Nigeria Of N8 Billion – EFCC by Ricky18(m): 9:02pm On May 31, 2015 |
Top officials of the Nigeria Central Bank, CBN, colluded with officials of private banks to defraud the country of about N8 billion, an anti-graft agency has said. The EFCC said on Sunday that it is ready to prosecute Patience Okoro Eye, Afolabi Olufemi, Kolawole Babalola, Olaniran Muniru Adeola, Fatai Yusuf Adekunle, and Ilori Adekunle Sunday, all top officials of the Central Bank from various states, after concluding its investigations. Officials of private banks who colluded with the Central Bank officials will also be prosecuted, the EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, stated in a statement. The scam involved the “theft and recirculation of defaced and mutilated currencies,” the anti-graft agency stated. The officials are set to be arraigned on Tuesday. Read the full statement below: EFCC To Arraign Six CBN Big Wigs,16 Others for N8billion Currency Fraud June 2 The Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC has concluded arrangement to arraign in court, five top executives of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, implicated in a mega scam involving the theft and recirculation of defaced and mutilated currencies. The suspects drawn from various business units of the apex bank are to be docked by the anti-graft agency before a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, from Tuesday June 2, 2015 to Thursday June 4, 2015. They include Patience Okoro Eye( Abuja) , Afolabi Olufemi( Lagos), Kolawole Babalola (Ibadan), Olaniran Muniru Adeola (Ibadan), Fatai Yusuf, Adekunle (Head, Security, CBN, (Ibadan) and Ilori Adekunle Sunday, (Akure). The remaining sixteen suspects are drawn from various commercial banks who were found to have conspired with the CBN executives to swing the heist. All the suspects who are currently in the custody of the EFCC are now ruing the day they literally allowed greed and craze for materialism to be loud their sense of judgement and responsibility, when they elected to help themselves to tones of defaced Naira notes. Instead of carrying out the statutory instruction to destroy the currency, they substituted it with newspapers neatly cut to Naira sizes and proceeded to recycle the defaced and mutilated currency. The fraud is partly to blame for the failure of government monetary policy over the years as currency mop up exercises by the apex bank failed to check the inflationary pressure on the economy. The lid on the scam which is widely suspected to have gone on unchecked for years, was blown on November 3, 2014 via a petition to the EFCC alleging that over N6, 575, 549, 370.00( Six Billion, Five Hundred and Seventy-Five Million, Five-Hundred and Forty-Nine Thousand, Three Hundred and Seventy Naira) was cornered and discreetly recycled by light manipulated top executives of the CBN at the Ibadan branch. The suspects, who were members of the Briquetting Panel, plotted their way to infamy on September 8, 2014, while carrying out a Briquetting exercise at the CBN Branch, Ibadan. In banking parlance, Briquetting is disintegration and destruction of counted and audited dirty notes. By this practice, depositor banks usually take mutilated notes to the CBN in exchange for fresh notes equivalent of the amount deposited. The depositor banks in this instance are Zenith Bank, FCMB, Wema Bank, Access Bank, First Bank, Skye Bank, Ecobank and Sterling Bank. But while carrying out the assignment, the team were alleged to have found one of the currency boxes filled only with old newspapers rather than 20 bundles of N1000 notes. A similar case, according to investigation, had been discovered on September 22, 2014 when a box that was supposed to contain N500 notes to the tune of N5billion was filled with old newspapers. Unlike in the past, this fraud could not be swept under the carpet, as a member of the Briquetting Panel from the Osogbo branch blew the lid on the illicit deal. In a statement, the informant stated that the exercise was designed to last between August 4 and 8, 2014. The 35-year-old, however, stated that she discovered a strange ‘sight’ while opening the third box on the second day of the exercise. It was a discovery that beat her ken. She added that she confronted the other members of the panel, including Eye, Head, Briquetting Panel; Treasury Assistant; Coordinator and Head, Security, CBN, Ibadan, who all assured her that they would look into it. But she later found out that it was all a ruse. She said she later found out that Eye not only maintained sealed lips over the matter but omitted it from her report. A five-count charge awaits the suspects as they prepare to face the wrath of the law. |
Crime / Man Narrates How He Escaped From Suspected Ritualists In Lagos by Ricky18(m): 8:56pm On May 31, 2015 |
38 year old Dennis Joseph has narrated how he was divinely saved divinely from suspected ritual attackers in Lagos recently. His story which he shared with National Mirror below:- “My name is Denis Joseph. I am 38 years old. I am from Imo state, Owerri North Local Government Area. I was born in Port Harcourt. I graduated from Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu. Presently I am into the distribution of Nestle products in Lagos and other states of the Federation. Recently a customer called me from Ikorodu that he needed some products urgently and that I should come and see him for proper negotiation before the second day. At about 2pm the following day, I boarded a Siena minivan from Ojota .We were about five in the vehicle including the driver of the vehicle I asked them how much was the fares and they told me it was #200. I said it was okay since the vehicle would be faster, I said no problem. I was in a hurry to catch up with my appointment. As we were going ,my spirit was very cold. I now flashed back to what happened at Ojota, shortly before we took off. I discovered then that some people in an attempt to enter the vehicle held back. they did not enter the car. It was unusual for my spirit to be so cold like that if there was no eventuality or imminent danger. As we moved further since my spirit was not willing and becoming uncomfortable in the car, I told the driver,’ Oga , please stop me here, I told them felt like continuing with the journey, let me pay you your correct fare. The driver responded that he could not stop at the place they were because it was dangerous since it was an expressway more so because of the law enforcement agents. I said please stop me let me get down here, the journey meant nothing to me again but he refused. He accelerated the speed. I told him it is not dangerous for him to stop and that I could see vehicles stopping and people moving about freely and that there was no danger in it. Before I knew what was happening, he increased the speed. In the process it became dawned on me that the occupants were not normal people. So I started struggling with them to go out. They started saying their incantation. Their invocation was so much that I knew it was only God that could save me at that point even though I believed that as a Christian, I would not die in the hands of those people. My escape was not possible because I was sandwiched by two men on my sides, with another at the back. I started shouting in the vehicle; leave me I want to go out. But my shout was inaudible since the windows were closed. Because of the way we sat there was no way I could jump out easily. Then I hit on the car, I hit on the other side, all my hands got bruises in an attempt to escape danger and death. Blood started coming out of my hands. I found out that they don’t want to stop as I was shouting and screaming. One of them said to me that why are you proving too stubborn, don’t you see other passengers in calm position. I did not even mind him. All these things happened shortly after Owode, Mile 12 area of the state. As I was doing that, one of them told the driver that we better hurry up o, this guy is proving too stubborn. They said this guy is not the type of person we need o, we better hurry up. It was when they started saying this that I discovered that they were not ordinary people and out to harm me. Fortunately for me and bad for them and through divine intervention and on coming trailer from the other side had blocked the road and the car could not penetrate the small opening. The car could not bypass the big trailer so it had to stop. I continued shouting. That was how they stopped abruptly and I came out of the car. Then some Policemen and people came round to inquire about what was happening. I narrated everything to them and they arrested the remaining occupants. They started asking them why are you doing this? The Police searched the vehicle and found dangerous weapons, charms, knives and all those fetish things. Me I started thanking God for delivering me and rescuing me from their hands left the place. I did not follow those apprehended to the Police. For the fact that I came out of the vehicle safely was okay for me. God just saved me miraculously from those people. So I thank Him. Because if not God I don’t know if I could have survived it. Those people are ritualists because they did not even asked me for money. They were only after my life. My advice to people going on a journey is for them to pray before they go out. So as to prevent unexpected mishaps. They also have to be careful and look well before boarding any vehicle. The Police too need to be in strategic places so that they would know who is who during the day, afternoon and at night. Even when people are shouting or struggling inside the car or bus, they will be able to respond easily and follow up the vehicle. That was what helped me and people started to come round to help me.”he said. |

Education / Post-utme To Be Scrapped Soon – JAMB Boss by Ricky18(m): 4:38pm On May 31, 2015 |
According to the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) , Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the post- UTME exams conducted by higher institutions will soon come to an end with the introduction of CBT Mode in UTME. He mentioned that following the introduction of CBT examination malpractice as well as will be completely eradicated with time. Post-UTME test was introduced because of the level of malpractice that trailed the UTME examinations in the past. However, the JAMB boss is of the opinion that when examination malpractice in UTME is completely eradicated with the introduction of CBT there will definitely be no need for post-UTME in higher institutions. He further stressed that the CBT Mode was also introduced to prepare candidates to face the academic challenges in higher institutions. |

Education / Covenant University Plans To Reduce School Fees by Ricky18(m): 7:23am On May 16, 2015 |
The Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, Prof. Charles Ayo, has hinted that the school may likely reduce its tuition fees in a bid to accommodate more students who will want to benefit from the quality education it offers. Addressing a news conference on Friday over the school’s recent Webometrics ranking as the first in Nigeria and West Africa and the 15th in Africa, he said even though there is no actual date for the likely review yet, the initiative would make admission into the school more affordable and competitive. He explained that apart from the fact the Chancellor of the school, Dr. David Oyedepo, had already thought about it, the school management also had plans to increase its internally generated revenue so as to augment its income, which would make the review easy. He said, “Going by the thinking of the proprietor and chancellor, the commission is thinking of reducing the fees with a view to allowing more people to be able to benefit from the quality education that we have here, but it’s going to be highly competitive. “This may affect us because we would need to work more on our IGR, but we are up to the task. The beauty of it all is to be able to leave it open to all, however, we are mindful of our carrying capacity, which will only engender stiff competition before anybody would be able to get admission. “By the next academic session, the university will be going into production of certain items and looking at our projection on the adventure, we are going to be raking in billions, which will supplement our income and with that, we can be sure that the fees would be reducing gradually, which also shows that education venture is not necessarily about profit-making but about service to humanity.” The vice-chancellor explained that with the recently released Webometrics Ranking of February 10, 2015, “Covenant University is now the first among all the universities in Nigeria and West Africa and the 15th in Africa. “Last year, we were the second in Nigeria and 25th in Africa, but now we have improved greatly, and this is because we came in with a view to introducing a change, which was a clear departure from what others do, therefore, this feat and many others do not really come as a surprise to us.” Webometrics Ranking is the ranking of about 2,500 institutions in the world based on their web presence, impact, presence, openness and excellence. #punch ng |
