VO: your left hand please Me: I placed my left hand Vo: (she typed on her computer for a while...I guess she was trying to call up my DS160) What's the highest level of education you have? Me: Ive been working at ***** (I work at a global professional service firm) Vo: so why masters degree now? Me: when I joined ***** (the firm I work with) in 2012, I developed a 10-year career plan, which is to work for 3 years then go for Masters degree for the next 2 year, come back to nigeria to apply the skills acquired for another 5 years before starting my own consulting firm. I have a dream of consulting for the Central Bank of Nigeria some day. Vo: okay...so you are going to University of North Texas. How did you find out about the school? Me: I was looking for a school that offers masters degree in economics with concentration in the area of Economic analysis, financial economics and econometrics, so I used usnews.com and princetonreview.com to filter out schools with such emphasis. Vo: how many schools did you apply to? Me: 4 Vo: name other schools excluding UNT Me: University of North Carolina, Florida international university and university of texas at Arlington Vo: So who is sponsoring you? Me: the school is funding me as you can see on my i20 Vo: (she looked at my i20 again) so why would the school give you tuition waiver? Vo: (she typed for a while) I am going to issue you a visa....you can pick it up at the location circled... bla bla....
In all..even though she questioned me alot, she did not ask me to show her any document aside my passport, ds120 confirmation page, i20 and sevis. Prayer works....also be confident. Most people who spoke confidently got their visas approved. All the best guys and thank you all. Congratulations |

ScholarAkassi: Visa Success Story US Consulate Lagos (Interview with the Black American Lady Window 4 on 26th May 2015 6:30am)
So finally today my US visa was approved. Thanks be to God and all the Gurus in the house for their wonderful support most especially bbdd. Here is my story and transcript. I arrived the consulate as early as 5:28 am and to my surprise I met a very long queue. After all the screening we finally reached the judgement centre. While I was on the queue I was paying close attention to all the questions of the VO's and the reply of those being interviewed. I am so grateful I came to this forum before the interview. Window 4 with the black american lady is the window of visa denial. The first four people the lady interviewed were all denied. I made a quick count of the people on the row and I discovered that I might fall under window 4. After the first four denial, the black american lady finally approved the next two student visas. At this point, I became relaxed and my mind was deep in prayer. I noticed that the two students that got their visas before me have previously travelled to the US and they studied in the UK may be for masters. Now, it is my turn my calculation was wrong the next available window is window 3 and I was about to proceed when suddenly the staff from CGI stopped me and he told me I should allow one of the aged women sitting to be interviewed. Window 4 is now free and I am about to face the black american lady
VO: Hello Me: Good Morning VO: Can I have your documents please? Me: I passed it to her VO: Okay so you are going to Rice University for a PhD Me: Yes VO: How did you hear about Rice University? Me: I met Professor D.B. from Rice University during my masters degree in the UK. He came for a visiting fellowship and I communicated with him about my interest in working under his supervision for my PhD and he advised me to apply after my masters. VO: So are you going to Rice because of the Professor? Me: The Professor is actually the main driving force for my selection of Rice. I have co-authored two academic papers with him and I see him as a perfect fit for the success of my research at the graduate school VO: When did you finish your masters? Me: 2013 VO: In what field was your masters? Me: Politics and International Relations VO: So how related is a PhD in Religion with Politics and International Relations? Me: My PhD research is targeted towards understanding the intersection of religion and international relations and how religion specifically shape events in the international system. I am particularly interested in uncovering how religious identities in the Middle East and North Africa shape the evolution of religious ideologies in Northern Nigeria. VO: So how many schools did you apply? Me: Three schools VO: Name them? Me: Rice University, Northwestern University and University of Wisconsin-Madison VO: So why are you so interested in Rice? Me: I am more interested in Rice because the university offers support for teaching assistanship and summer language program which are both important for the PhD training in my field. VO: So who is funding you for the program? Me: I am on a full scholarship. I was awarded a full tuition waiver and an annual stipend of $21,000 VO: Okay, you can pick up your visa at the collection centre I circled on this form in three days time. Congrats and best of luck Me: Thank you
The VO did not ask for any documents. I am so grateful to God for the confidence he bestowed upon me. I came out of the embassy and I hurriedly hugged my mother and straight off we drove home in jubilation. I believe it is important to demonstrate full preparedness for what you intend to study to the VO in order to be able to convince them Best of luck Congratulations and wish u best of luck 1 Like |

This is how it went:
me: ( with smiling face ) Good morning ma'am vo: good morning, pass me ur docs me: (passes them ) vo: ( types for a while ) u re studying, u re a student? me: yes vo: which school me: xyz state polytechnic vo: which course me: 3-month noncredit course on mech eng vo: what will u study in US me: mechanical engineering vo: why study in US me: because academic experience and degrees from US universities are highly recognised and valued all over the world especially here by Nigerian employers. they....( she cuts ) vo: how many schools did you apply to me: 4 schools vo: how many accepted you me: I was accepted by four of the schools vo: what are they me: uni of Maryland, njit , uni of Bridgeport &SUNY college at buffalo vo: so why this school me: I chose this school because of d competitiveness I recognised in their mech eng course when compared to oda universities mech eng courses that I applied for, which includes a well structured and cutting edge curriculum with a solid theoritical and extensive hands-on education, combined with a well equipped modern laboratories. most importantly dedicated and outstanding faculties who are experts and whose top priority is to inculcate in me the mech eng xperience dat can hep me to advance my career here in 9ja (she cuts) vo: when did u finish sec skool me: 2009 v.o: what have been doing me: in 2010 I took jamb which gave me entrance to a national diploma course on mech end in 2011 and grad in 2013 after den undertuk a 1yr IT which was a mandatory requirement for my ND course on March eng and currently now attending a 3-month noncredit course on mech eng to keep me fit for this course I will face in US. vo: did you write SAT me: no but I took TOEFL vo: who's paying for your fees me; my dad vo: what does he do me: he is the owner and CEO of xyz enterprises nig ltd the market leader in the importation and distribution of all kinds of electrical and electronic appliances and also automobile spare parts with head office in Lagos state and 10 other branched offices across the country. vo: has ur dad travelled out me: no ma'am vo: unfortunately visa cannot be approved blaa bla bla h
from the last qstion and answer that I gave, I can see the mistake. But my dad does online business, doesn't travel. but I think I should have convinced the vo by telling the vo that he travels out even though he doesn't, since getting visa was the priority. Pls gurus in the house, out of this transcript, what caused the delay, pls don't cast aspersions because we all here to learn. No one knows it all.
boss try reapply..i didnt c any fault in ur interview o..mayb because u didnt do SAT sha.....mayb but u wil get it in ur next interview amen |

wizzy11: Please Guys with experience Kindly advice, Below is my my post on the other thread about my first Experience.
Kindly advice on what next to expect, without Doubt i know it's all in God's hands and by His Grace i would sail through. But if there is someone with such an experience or similar situation in the past (Or know of someone with same), please share and let's hear how they resolved it.
Hi V. O,
I see you have done so much work advising people on this thread. Thanks for your time and advice. I am a prospective Msc student (Who's been offered a tuition waiver i.e Graduate assitantship). I was denied yesterday, (the Consulate officer never asked for my I-20 or Knew i was on scholarship) she only asked.
What sch : I answered,
Let me have you Dad's Bank statement: I presented the GT bank statement since i am on scholarship.
She went through it, next thing was she offered me A sheet (Denied under Section 214(b).
I was dumbfounded. (Well i take some blame not going with My Dad's other bank statements/ His Company Documents and other documents. I felt one bank statement would do since i'm on scholarship.)
I have reapplied again and booked for another Interview in a week time.
Kindly advice. Would i have been wrong to have told her i'm on scholarship, since she did not ask? On my Next interview is it pertinent i make mention of it to the Consulate officer?
Thanks. What's the name of your school and how much is in the account statement |
