PoliticsDino Melaye Dumps PDP, defects to ADC (Photos) by RightChannel(op): 3:10pm On Jul 31, 2025
Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to provide credible leadership and deliver good governance to Nigerians.

In a resignation letter shared on his official X account, Melaye announced his immediate withdrawal from all party activities.

"I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement.

"This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,”
the letter partly read.

Dino Melaye, who once served as the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 Kogi State governorship election, said his decision followed deep reflection on the party’s current state and trajectory.

"Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the parties or lend my support to her agenda,” the letter continued.

He requested that his resignation be treated as a formal and total withdrawal from all party levels and structures.

"In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” the letter added.

In his closing remarks, Melaye expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the party’s platform during his time as a member.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership,” the letter concluded.

Melaye’s resignation is seen as a significant blow to the PDP, coming on the heels of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s exit from the party.

The former senator’s decision to leave the PDP has sparked speculation about his next political move, but he has vowed to continue fighting for justice, equity, and progress in Nigeria.

PoliticsTrump Govt Vows To Sanction Corrupt Judges In Nigeria, Other Countries by RightChannel(op): 9:46am On Jul 31, 2025
After imposing sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for alleged abuse of power and politically motivated actions, U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that similar measures could be extended to corrupt judges in Nigeria and other countries.

The warning was delivered by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who confirmed that Justice Moraes was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act for human rights violations.

“@POTUS and @USTreasury have sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program for serious human rights abuses,” Mr Rubio said in a post on social media.

Warning judicial officials from Nigeria and other nations of the world, the U.S. Secretary of State said, “Let this be a warning to those who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen—judicial robes cannot protect you.”

Magnitsky sanctions are financial and travel restrictions imposed by governments on individuals found guilty of severe human rights violations. The sanctions are named after Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian tax lawyer who exposed government corruption but was imprisoned, tortured, and died in custody in 2009.

Mr Rubio’s warning that the United States will pursue corrupt judicial officials globally — including in Nigeria — with Magnitsky sanctions follows the U.S. Department of State’s recent action against Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil.

“Today, the United States is sanctioning Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for serious human rights abuse, including arbitrary detention involving flagrant denials of fair trial guarantees and violations of the freedom of expression,” the U.S. Department of State said.

It added, “Moraes abused his authority by engaging in a targeted and politically motivated effort designed to silence political critics through the issuance of secret orders compelling online platforms, including U.S. social media companies, to ban the accounts of individuals for posting protected speech.”

According to the U.S. government, Justice Moraes further misused his authority by approving unjust pre-trial detentions and suppressing freedom of expression.

He has been designated under Executive Order 13818, which expands and enforces the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.

PoliticsFashola Weighs In On Lagos Street Naming Controversy, Warns Against Erasing by RightChannel(op):
Former governor of Lagos State and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, has called for the preservation of Lagos history to avoid distortion and promote values, particularly as the discussion on street naming in Lagos continues to create controversy.

He stated this on Tuesday at the public presentation of “Discover Lagos State: A History Puzzle Book (Volume 1)” held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

At the event, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, also echoed the importance of documenting the state’s history, hailing the Lagos State Records and Archive Bureau for the timely presentation of the book.

Fashola referenced the works in the digital archives of the University of Glasgow, noting that the past works of the university’s staff and students played a role in influencing the historical development in other countries, even in the area of landmarks.

He said records also contain information about the first Nigerian students at the University of Glasgow at the time, including Dr Issac Ladipo Oluwole, who was enrolled in 1913 and graduated in 1918.

Referencing the archive, Fashola said, “Dr Ladipo Oluwole returned to Nigeria to become the first African medical officer of health in the Lagos colony.

“He pioneered school health services, with school inspection and vaccination of children in their schools, and started the first Nigerian school of hygiene at Yaba in Lagos in 1920. So that’s the Ladipo Oluwole. But the records were kept well in Glasgow, Scotland.

“So those of us who drive through streets such as Ladipo Oluwole Street in Ikeja will probably now understand and contextualise the contributions of such a man and why it was considered such a high honour to immortalise him by naming a street in his memory.

But it is perhaps instructive that we are discussing street naming and street unnaming and I keep my gunpowder dry,” he added.

“Today I reiterate those words about street naming and Dr Oluwole and with a greater conviction to reinforce my message that the preservation of our history and the documentation of our progress should be taken seriously,” Fashola said.

The Chairman, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian traders in South Africa, describing the incident as senseless, barbaric, and unacceptable.

The two victims, identified simply as Austin and Ayo, were reportedly shot dead at close range by masked gunmen in Durban.

According to unconfirmed reports, the attackers stormed Austin’s office and opened fire, killing both men on the spot.

In a statement by NIDCOM’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa said the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa is already looking into the matter.

She urged the South African authorities to launch a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, described the killing of two Nigerian Traders in South Africa by unknown gunmen as intolerable and senseless, with a call to fish out the culprits.

“She said the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa is looking into the matter.

Dabiri-Erewa said this latest unprovoked killing is condemnable and barbaric, calling on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and expose the perpetrators, ” the statement partly read.

Balogun said she lamented the non-implementation of the early warning mechanisms earlier agreed upon by both countries to prevent such incidents, stressing the need for South Africa to take the arrangement seriously.

She recalled that the early warning mechanism put in place by both countries to prevent such killings is yet to be implemented by South Africa,” the statement added.

While extending condolences to the families of the deceased, Dabiri-Erewa assured them that every effort would be made to ensure justice is served.

Amid rising tension among members of the Nigerian community in South Africa, the NIDCOM boss appealed for calm and urged Nigerians not to take the law into their own hands.
