It's about the principle of the matter. The scope's pretty broad for a competition and the requirements are a tad too specific compared to a competition site like www.topcoder.com. I'm just safeguarding interests. I know I could easily pull this off, but the dude has to make it worth my while so to speak. ![]() |
I write a fair amount of Django code and would probably turn in a solution in a weekend if you didn't have any restrictions. But for what you're asking for I'll wait till you raise the pot to $1.5 k before turning something in. Seems fair given what you're asking, ![]() |
rasputinjones2k@gmail.com BTW. What resources are you using at the moment to learn how unity works? |
Well that's unfortunate. I'm going to lay down the gauntlet and keep this offer open for the next 6 months. If anyone thinks they fit the criteria I wrote down here and wants to work on projects that will challenge them and become the inspiration for other Nigerian programmers - come talk to me. And by the way this is the real deal. I graduated with a Masters from Carnegie Mellon, the top Computer Science University in the United States. I specialized in Computer Security but still remember fondly the good old days downloading linux from Linkserve and Hyperia accounts we got through methods I won't print . Any of the old school folks here will remember what I'm talking about. I also started with a few classmates many years ago one of the more talked about Nigerian Software firms.I've been lucky to gain a lot of experience over my 15 years mucking around with technology and I'd like to give something back. I'd expect that this team would learn a lot from me as I will from them as we navigate the challenges and opportunities in this space. There are several creative approaches I have in mind to delivering products - and also funding this endeavor. What you can expect to learn from me is how to market and deliver software that delights customers. And also how build, manage, deploy and deliver services that can scale to millions of users. There seem to be a lot of smart people on this thread. And I'd feel really bad handling this with one of the bespoke game development firms over here without attempting to give back first. What I think you all need is funding, organization and clear direction. Because this space is so wide open, nailing these three things should sufficiently increase your chance of success. The other piece of course is writing great software - but that can be taught and is a lot easier than the former. |
cool. i reckon a team of four would make sense to bootstrap. 1 chap who's decent with web technology. should be able to run circles around flash and should be solid or interested in becoming reasonably solid with html5. 2 chaps who are technically agnostic. with a good handle on computer science concepts and can pick up languages fairly easily from unity's requirements for javascript and c#.also wouldn't mind learning new languages like objective-c, graphics concepts like open-gl or frameworks like box3d, cocos2d etc. 1 chap who's deeply interested in 3-d modelling with blender and would be estatic if i got him a wacom tablet for digital art. should also be interested in working with special effects software like adobe aftereffects. although it would be prudent to pay for graphics design initially, eventually it would make sense to me to develop these capabilities in-house. and I'm not expecting these four people have full knowledge of these technologies from the get go. i can teach/mentor in areas that they arent familiar with. but what i can assure you get access to all the resources you'll need to deliver a first product in 6 months - and then we can talk about longer term prospects. |
In general my take on this is topics of sensitivity should be left to the party purchasing the product. With the appropriate rating slapped people can make the best decisions for themselves. What's your background and what languages are you comfortable with? |
[I'm crossposting this for visibility. Apologies if I'm breaking some unknown forum rule] A while back I'd been thinking of making a game along these lines. Actually had a title for it "Escape from Bakassi". It was going to be a platformer on Unity3D that'd pay homage in a way to Contra. A little background about me. I work in the US for a well known Fortune 500 company. I've gotten a fair amount of programming and project management experience on several projects. I've been thinking about giving some of my knowledge back by mentoring a few serious minded folks to start a proper Nigerian game development firm in 2012. While I don't think it would be reasonable to promise immediate success, I did want to consider a 2 year focused investment in this area as I considered this enough time to do something substantial. It seems on this thread there are quite a few people who are passionate about this. So perhaps there's a chance to get this started for real. PM me your cell phone number if you're interested and I'll make an international call so we can chat a bit. ------ Here is my own idea of a storyline: The government of Nigeria is having problems with groups of militants who have taken it upon themselves to terrorise the oil rich Niger-Delta. They engage in vandalism, extortion, Robbery and kidnapping. An american oil expatriate is kidnapped. Pressure begins to mount on the government from the U.S to rescue the man. They know going all out with the Nigerian Military will endanger the captives life. They call on the Nigerian Secret Agency(NSA) who then appoints Agent Badmus Haruna aka Baba, their most trusted and experienced agent. His mission is to find and rescue the man. ------ Agent Baba will be our actor. He is to go from one militant base to another. Because we want this short and less complex, we may just draw out 3 militant bases located maybe in a forest, building and around moutains etc. As he goes, he picks up notes/clues telling him important details. From this we will again enough knowledge to begin a RTS/FPS Game engine. So friends, what do you think? Lets read more storylines. Its getting interest already. |

Fascinating auctioning process. It's actually a lot simpler than I'd have expected. Clearly Seun, the goals of this exercise isn't to test any algorithm knowledge? For the other comments about Python. I highly recommend it over most other languages. It's quite easy to pick up and much more powerful compared to PHP which seems to be the language of choice for most Nigerian websites. ------- @wassolldas: Let's say the CBN wants to sell exactly 1000 dollars, and the bids are as follows, sorted by rate: ahmad wants $300 at ₦170 per dollar bola wants $400 at ₦165 per dollar chisom wants $250 at ₦160 per dollar uche wants $200 at ₦155 per dollar tinubu wants $500 at ₦150 per dollar $300 < $100 $300 + $400 = $700. $700 <= $1000 $700 + $250 = $950. $950 <= $1000 $950 + $200 = $1150. $1150 > $1000. so uche is out, and anyone whose bid is not higher than uche's The winning bidders are ahmad (₦170), bola (₦165), and chisom (₦160), because their bids are higher than uche's bid. The official exchange rate will be the lowest rate offered by a winning bidder. That's ₦160 or chisom's bid. That's the rate all the winning bidders will have to pay per dollar for the amount of dollars they submitted bids for. So out of the $1000 offered for sale, ahmad will pay ₦(300*160) for $300. bola will pay ₦(400*160) for $400, and lucky chisom will pay ₦(250*160) for $250. uche and tinubu will get nothing and the CBN will be left with $50 after selling $950. It's a very simple algorithm. Notes: * Your code should not allow bidders to bid more than what they have in their naira accounts. In the above example, Ahmad's bid for $300 at ₦170 per dollar should have required the loading of at least ₦(300*170) into his account before bidding, even though he will ended up paying only ₦(300*160). The change will be left in his naira account. * Withdrawals and deposits into accounts in the webapp should be simulated, of course. It's just a proof of concept. |
