Business / Re: Naira Weakens To N458 Per Dollar At Parallel Market by rmx1: 7:01pm On Mar 03, 2017
HAH:
as at today due to relative peace in the ND, we export 2.1million barrels in a day and oil sells for averagely $55 per barrel, that means $115M is made daily, now deduct JV of about 40%, tha means Nigeria earns about $70m daily therefore we make about $420m weekly from oil, if I were the government I will pump $200M into the economy and live $220 int the reserves

So my brother your worry should be political will, but not sustainability cos is very sustainable as long as oil is relatively high and there is peace in the land

How u dey bro

How's the bakery coming on

On the above matter ,what u don't get is 200m a week or 800m $ a month will not solve the problem ,our monthly demand as a nation cant be less than 1.2 to 1.5 billion $ ,throw in the speculators demand might be more

Imagine a total of about $700m was pumped into the markets and its still thirsty and rates are close to 470 again at the blackmarket in less than 8 days .
Its inevitable the currency will weaken both at the official and parallel

I feel the govt knows this already and are buying time hoping for a miracle because they know the devastating consequence of this increase on petrol and cost of living   or they will soon know

They are indeed btw the devil and the sea .I am praying for them because very difficult decisions must be taken .I feel it will be taken this second or third quarter

Laconic1:
Last week we saw one of the greatest drop in the value of the dollar with a sharp gain of the naira in the black market. How was this achieved. Who made this happen. Who is the smart ass.
Anyway this move made a lot of people poorer i.e currency speculators who kept buying the dollar putting a demand on the dollar while the naira suffered from low demand till it hit the high of 2016 and just then the CBN intervention came in with a mad flood of much more dollars and the mopping up of naira so that there was a scarcity of naira.
And wholla the dollar came crashing down while the more the naira was mopped out of the system.

This brilliant intervention means the CBN is using our reserves to fight the dollar war
How sustainable is this ....will the CBN be willing to continue this.

As a forex trader with 10years experience I watched with my mouth open as it happened and shook my head as the internet was glowing with news how osinbanjo is the man
How he tamed the dollar in one swing of the magic wand.I saw panic selling going on as many turned in thier dollar. While smart investors bought all these dollars for keeps.
Now the dollar fall has stopped
Why did it stop
I thought it will fall for ever as we are made to believe.
Just yesterday while watching ARISE TV the news came out of the economy contracting by -1.4% for the first time in 20years.
Meaning for the first time in 20years the economy stopped growing
Now the real bad news was from the PMI ( producers manufacturing index) saying it fell
What does this mean
It mean the real people who needs the dollars are not getting it
But osinbanjo gave dollars for school fees payment
While the manufacturers who need dollars are not getting it

Even the economy according to the news saw major improvement from the oil sector because militants have stopped bombing
So the non oil sector fell even the most holy agriculture.

Osinbanjo has stated in the last FED meeting he favours a devaluation of the naira.
Right now the naira is 405naira to 1 dollar
Let's assume he goes ahead to devalue to let's say 20 basic points
That would be 425naira to 1 dollar
Now imagine what the black market will do
We will be looking at 550-600naira to 1 dollar
Already JP Morgan is worried that Nigeria is not attracting FDIs ( foreign direct investments)
What does that leave us
It leaves us with an economy that will keep shrinking and a dollar war we can't win as fear will make more people demand for dollars as naira will keep falling.
My advice to you
Keep buying the dollar for keeps
Keep your bulk money in dollars
The trip to hell is about to get nasty
God save our soul

I thot that the official rate was 305 not 405

Will comment At tooltips various saga , I think online credibility and reputation is overrated ,you must do you due diligence always ,that's why I like agarawu comment on knowing not only the the person but there friends and family ,where they work and live etc

I believe It is impossible to have online reputation/credibility more than you have in real life

It's obvious some are chewing more than they can swallow and overlevaraging on other peoples funds even though they are have built a reputation from past dealings ,the mark of a business person with impeccable trust and integrity is to have reserves u can fall back on ,when an unforeseen ,unplanned event happens to your working funds ,sadly most of us don't have this

@ tooltip ,I think u will get your money back if it's indeed legit ,but it will take time ,I wish u the best

Business / Re: Forex: Erisco Foods Threatens To Fire 1,500 Workers, Leave Nigeria by rmx1: 8:02am On Oct 08, 2016
jjman2322:
Ok i feel like its time for me to come in with some much needed clarifications..

We are in the manufacturing business (medicine), and we have been hit hard, probably lost around $500,000 this year..
Let me explain:

#1. First of all, NO MACHINERY can be made locally. We use high end machines that cost $100,000's that are only made in China & India.. Has Nigeria even managed to make a TV, talkless of heavy duty machines..

#2. Raw materials for our pharmaceutical production are 100% imported. To make ampicillin capsule you need ampicillin powder. To make amoxicillin capsule, you need amoxicillin powder, etc. These powders are not made in Nigeria. Heck, there are only a few of these factories in the whole world. The factory to make ampicillin would cost tens of millions of dollars, and you wouldnt be able to compete with Chinese prices.

#3. Let me get to how manufacturers source forex. For Machine, raw material imports, you either get funds by :

a. BILL FOR COLLECTION (Where the supplier ships the machine/raw materials to us, and we submit documents to CBN to pay them dollars),
b. LETTER OF CREDIT (Where CBN deducts or naira, and send dollars to the supplier's bank in advance.)

#4. We have dozens of BILLS FOR COLLECTIONS pending across all banks in Nigeria. Basically what this means is that for example a supplier sent a container of ampicillin powder, value of say $250,000, we used the goods and submitted the document to our bank.
Five months later the bank is yet to give us any dollar. We now had to resort to buying black market at N450 for goods that have been used and sold thinking that we were going to get dollar @ 310.

Let me explain this again, lets say for ampicillin capsule you need 1kg of powder per packet. In january you use

1kg of powder X $30/kg = $30. (Multiply this by 310 and you get N9,300). You go ahead and sell this packet in the market for N12,000 for a nice profit of almost N3000. BUT WAIT!!

The official funds never come from your bank, your supplier needs payment so he can continue shipping, otherwise your business closes down. You now go to black market and buy the $30 (@ N450 rate = 13,500). You have just lost N1,500.

Now I just gave you a small example. Multiply this 1kg by 20,000 tons, and now you can see how manufacturers have lost money and closed down. We also had to fire dozens of people just to keep costs down.

What people dont know is that the dollars are NOT enough.. For every $1,000 needed by manufacturers, the CBN has only $100 to give.

Want to know the worst thing? That sample ampicillin packet example I gave you is being imported by some people straight from China. They are importing the finished product, and finished products have no duty.

So basically if you import the raw material as a manufacturer, some of the materials have duty up to 40%, meanwhile if you just have it made in China you bring it in duty free.

Want to know the funniest thing? Many of these importers have connections/bribe top bank officials so that same ampicillin you sold for N13,000 is being sold by N10,000 because they got their funds @ 310.

Please ask any questions if you guys have, but this country has some of the worst policies I've ever seen.

The fact that manufacturers have to buy black market, coupled with the fact its much cheaper to just import the finished product is ridiculous.. More companies are going to close.. We are making essential medicines yet we are almost closing, I can only imagine how other industries are doing..

Hmmm.interesting ,I see we are in similar industries ,pharma manufacturing .i feel ur pain ,can relate 100 % with what u have said

But I have a different slant or view ,I see opportunities instead ,will not mention on a public forum how much we have lost and it's much due to the reasons u stated .

It's an opportunity to gain market share from competitors as everybody struggles with the dollar issue ,both local producers and importers ,make no mistake ,there is scarcity of products in the market by both importers and local manufacturers ,it is the well prepared that will take this opportunity ,a lot of planning and creative thinking should be involved ,the way it is now ,u must be keeping stocks of raw materials now for 4 to 6 months if u have the capacity ,personally started early by converting loose funds to raw material last quarter 2015 ,and throughout 1st and 2nd quarter 2016,when I saw the way the writing on the wall

Having a buffer stock of raw and packaging materials for months ,allows u not to be desperate to buy dollars urgently at this crazy black market rates ,allows me wait for my pending lc at the banks for months ,have more than 12lc in various banks ,one as long as February shocked shocked

One more thing ,don't entirely agree u can't compete with importers ,for most of the products I do my prices are better than imported products and am getting great sales ,my strategy from the beginning of this year is lower margins and a higher turnover and it's working
Even with the etls that made imported products duty zero last year ,remember the rise in $ affects the cost of the imported products more than the local ,because for the importers it affects them 100% for local manufacturer it affects a part of our cost ,raw and packaging ,and this might be btw 30 to 70% depending on the product ,that difference allows me do the above
Maybe when my betalactam factory under construction is completed next year ,I will find out if this plays out in that field also.also note I have two other factories I run ,not pharma and I apply same ,it's challenging no doubt ,involves months of planning .i figured u must be either running the J or N factory in Enugu ,I think the N ,am sure u do a lot of business with sankil ,ask them about me ,they mentioned doing business with u ,all the best bro ,it is A tough year for businesses

I have an offer to buy $100,000 usd at a good rate. The seller wants to transfer to my dom and I pay naira to her Nigerian account. But she is asking that I transfer first before she wires to mine.
That sounds too risky and I can't do that. Mind, I don't know the seller from Adam though I got the intro from a banker I've worked with a couple of times.
My question is, what are the available options to go about this transaction in a safe way, without being scammed considering the fact that she is not also ready to transfer first? Please advice.

I have almost completed the construction of my bakery, I want to have an idea how much are the staff paid? Should I make it commission based or salary based? I want to give them a competitive pay.
Thank you

Hmm ,depends on location ,business model i.e. Is it a bread shop where people come in to buy bread or u will move the bread out with vehicles to sell ,generally start with salary and move to commission when volume of bag increases ,my 2 kobo as someone who owns a bakery

Hi

Check the Nigerian customs website and search the item to get the hscode that will show cet, duty rate and vat

But looking at the figures u quoted for local prices, will advise u to go ahead and buy locally at 300, and even stock up because local prices might increase further from ur analysis of cif prices ,

It's will be higher to import than 300/ tonne u are complaining about if you factor exchange rate at 300 ,duty and clearing expenses of about 25 % subject to confirmation ,note that most manufacturer brings in things with both blackmarket rate and official rate when available. But to get official is getting more difficult, I have lc that have been in the banks for 3 to 4 month, no official forex
Also blackmarket rate is on the rise lately

My advise as someone that imports a lot and manufacture a lot too in Nigeria

Cheers
