From Punch A report by a committee of the United States House of Representatives has linked the fundamentalist Islamist sect, Boko Haram to al Shabaab, the terror group that carried out the September 21 Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya. The report dated September 13, 2013 and entitled, ‘Boko Haram: Growing Threat to the US Homeland’, also acknowledged the growing relationship between the Nigerian sect and another terror group, the Al Qaeda in the land of the Islamic Maghreb. The 39-page report noted that “while there is no evidence that al Qaeda’s core in Afghanistan and Pakistan commands Boko Haram’s operations, it is clear from the words of multiple US officials and media reports that Boko Haram is supportive of, and supported by Al Qaeda networks such as AQIM.” It noted that “it is the unity of ideology and mutual hatred for the West between the Al Qaeda networks that exposes the danger Boko Haram poses to the U.S Homeland.” The committee described Boko Haram as a “hardened and sophisticated terror network” that required multiple simultenous local and international efforts to enhance the capacity and capability of the the Nigerian Police and the military to curtail its activities. It said there was an urgent need by the US to designate the sect as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation because it has shown no signs of ending its aggression against the government of Nigeria and the Western world. The commiteee wrote, “The world is coming to know more about Boko Haram; their intentions, what they’re capable of, and who is supporting them. “The US Intelligence Community is working to erase the gaps in our understanding of Boko Haram, but it is already evident they are a serious threat to US interests and potentially to the US Homeland. ‘‘Acknowledging this threat publicly by designating Boko Haram an FTO will establish a legal mechanism for prosecuting any supporters within US jurisdictions. “This is an increasingly important tool given their attempts to market themselves to a wider international audience. “Boko Haram shows no signs of ending its campaign against the government of Nigeria and the Western world. Two years after their August 2011 bombing of a United Nations facility in Abuja, Nigeria, Boko Haram remains a threat to the international community, and continues to be a developing threat to the US Homeland.” The report said that Boko Haram had “highly skilled bomb makers who might have received training from experienced militants elsewhere, potentially indicating a stronger relationship between them and AQIM or Al Shabaab. It said that besides building sophisticated weaponry, it was now possible that Boko Haram had acquired or will acquire SA-7 and SA-24 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles. The SA-7 missile is effective up to 1,300 metres, while some newer models reach altitudes of almost four kilometres. Although most aircraft cruise around 9,140 metres, the SA-7 could be used to target aircraft during takeoff and landing. In the report, the committee warned, “It does not take much imagination to picture the threat these weapons would pose to commercial aviation in Abuja if they fell into Boko Haram hands.” Out of the 20,000 such weapons in Libya, only 5,000 of them had been secured through a $40m US programme to buy up loose missiles during the fall of the Gadhafi regime. Most are believed to have found their way into countries that share common boundaries with Nigeria. The committee acknowledged that the Goodluck Jonathan administration had taken some potentially promising steps in its effort to fight Boko Haram. It said the appointment of Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), a northern Nigerian Muslim, to the position of National Security Adviser on June 23, 2012, demonstrated Jonathan’s willingness to give northerners and Muslims a visible role in Nigeria’s struggle with Boko Haram. “Dasuki has taken the lead in organising government’s fight against Boko Haram, and his background as a Muslim from the North may give him obvious and potent symbolic significance,” the committee said. In spite of this, the committee observed that concerns regarding the capability of the Jonathan administration to effectively deal with Boko Haram remained prominent. The committee said without foreign assistance from countries such as the US and the UK, the Nigerian government would almost certainly face a prolonged battle in neutralising Boko Haram. According to the committee, the State Department, which has also engaged Nigeria through its African Coastal and Border Security programme, has focused its assistance on peacekeeping support, training, border and maritime security, and increasing military professionalisation. But it lamented that in spite of the training, the “JTF continues to behave unprofessionally, and has been accused of human rights abuses by Human Rights Watch, among other entities, including the State Department’s most recent annual human rights report.” It also warned that greater pressure must be applied to the JTF to abandon counter- productive and brutal tactics alienating northerners. The committee said failure of the Secretary of State to designate the Boko Haram sect an FTO, was the ‘most obvious flaw in the US effort to combat it and prevent its expansion.’ It said, “If Boko Haram were to be designated an FTO, it would support US intelligence community efforts to curb the group’s financing, stigmatise and isolate it internationally, heighten public awareness and knowledge, and signal to other governments the US takes the threat from Boko Haram seriously. “If Boko Haram is not designated an FTO, its potential threat to the US and its capability to attack the homeland would likely increase. It is therefore an urgent next step to take in fighting this growing al Qaeda affiliate in Nigeria.” The committee further said as the number of attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram had increased in 2013, so had the attention paid to the group by the US.

Protesters organized by the Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) were barred from gaining entrance into the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in the afternoon of September 25, 2013, Wednesday. The protesters began their march about 12 p.m., starting out from the bustling Ojuelegba overhead bridge in the Surulere area of Lagos, and stopping just outside the main entrance gate at the University of Lagos. According to SaharaReporters the police did not disrupt the protest, but that the protesters found the university’s gates shut against them. A source within UNILAG disclosed that many of the university’s students did not participate in the protest, and in fact instigated the closure of the gate to prevent the protest from drawing a crowd within the institution. In another development, the new national President of NANS, Yinka Gbadebo, had reportedly dissociated himself from any protest held in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), whose members have been on a long strike. In earlier statements, Mr. Gbadebo took a stance against both ASUU and the Federal Government. However, the NANS leader has been particularly critical of ASUU, accusing the body of opposing efforts to revive student union bodies in every institution. His position has evolved to reveal increasing sympathy with the Federal Government. In turn, the leader of the Lagos chapter of the JCC of NANS accused Mr. Gbadebo and other NANS leaders of “misrepresenting the students at the federal level,” adding, “we are not waiting on them for any movement.” The JCC protesters demonstrated outside the UNILAG gate for several hours. Throughout the protest, the gate remained locked, with no one able to go in or out of the gate until the protests ended in the late afternoon.

ENUGU— Hundreds of ex-Biafran soldiers, yesterday, vowed to engage in a showdown with the federal government over the non- release of their entitlements more than forty years after the war, despite repeated promises. Apparently to show their seriousness, the war veterans threatened to embark on a street-wide protest in Abuja in a few weeks, if government refused to meet their demand within a reasonable time frame, expressing dismay that most of their members had lost their lives because of the absence of reasonable sources of livelihood. Rising from an emergency meeting in Enugu, the ex-soldiers, led by Col. Victor Onah (rtd) and Ibe Nwachukwunta, national coordinator and attorney respectively, condemned the non-chalance of the Federal Government towards their plight, in spite of their contributions to the nation. Apart from demanding that urgent attention, rehabilitation, settlement, payment of their emoluments/entitlements and any other money be given to them, the veterans also asked for their reintegration and assimilation into the nation’s armed forces in order to facilitate the payment of their pensions. |
LOS ANGELES (AFP) – The promoters of Michael Jackson’s last tour were “so excited” about making huge profits that they did not bother to hire a competent doctor for the star, his family’s lawyer said Tuesday in closing arguments. As a five-month trial draws to a close, Jackson attorney Brian Panish said the self-styled King of Pop was “an easy target” for AEG Live, which was managing his “This is It” tour starting in London in 2009. “We may never see the likes of Michael Jackson again,” Panish told the 12- member jury in a courtroom in downtown Los Angeles, where the trial opened in April and has seen nearly 60 witnesses and over 800 pieces of evidence. Jackson died on June 25, 2009 from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol at his rented Holmby Hills mansion outside Los Angeles, where he was rehearsing for the “This is It” shows at London’s 02 Arena. He was 50 years old. Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in a criminal trial in 2011 for giving the drug to the “Thriller” star — who suffered from chronic insomnia — to help him sleep. He was jailed for four years. In the civil trial, the singer’s mother Katherine Jackson, 83, is seeking massive damages — her lawyers have cited $1.5 billion in lost income and an unspecified amount for emotional loss and other damages — for Jackson’s death. She alleges that AEG Live negligently hired an inappropriate and incompetent doctor for her son — Murray is a cardiologist — and missed a series of red flags about his failing health in the run-up to his death. “They chose not to check anything about Dr. Murray’s background .. They chose to run the risk, to make a huge profit, and they lost and they’re responsible,” he said. “AEG wanted the King of Pop in their arena in London. They would do whatever it took to get him on stage… They were so excited about how much money they were going to make,” he added. “They knew what they were getting. Now they want to come in and deny it.” Summing up his case, he said Jackson may have been one of the world’s most famous entertainers but in his mind he was like “a real-life Peter Pan.” “He was an easy target” for the corporate promoter, long experienced in running tours for some of the biggest acts in the world, he said. AEG Live counters that it did not sign a contract with Murray, and that a promised $150,000 a month for his services would come from an advance it was making to Jackson, meaning effectively that the star hired his own medic. The promoter’s lead lawyer, Marvin Putnam, is due to present his side’s closing arguments after Panish concludes his summing up.

Like many mothers, Rajeshwari Karnan was delighted when she gave birth to a son. The 23- year-old farm labourer and her husband, Karnan Perumal, 26, already had a two-year-old daughter, but like many in the state of Tamil Nadu, they considered a boy a particular blessing. So when Rahul arrived in May, they were especially delighted. However, just over a week later, their joy turned to misery. One day Rajeshwari Karnan suddenly heard her baby Rahul (pictured) screaming from inside the hut. She ran towards him, but before she could get there, a neighbour shouted ‘Your baby is on fire!’ One afternoon, says Rajeshwari, she was washing her daughter when she suddenly heard Rahul screaming from inside the hut. She ran towards him, but before she could get there, a neighbour shouted to her the words she will never forget: ‘Your baby is on fire!’ ‘There was a flame on his belly and his right knee,’ Rajeshwari told the New York Times last week, ‘and my husband rushed with a towel to put it off [sic]. I got very scared.’ The couple immediately took their son to hospital, but the doctors were mystified. Later, the parents returned home, hoping this bizarre and disturbing occurrence would not repeat itself. But it has done — three more times, according to the couple. The last incident took place one afternoon last month, with their little boy suffering first and second-degree burns. As a result, the family have now been forced to move from their village, due to their neighbours’ fears that the baby could cause a serious fire. This month, the couple took the child to be examined at a hospital in the city of Chennai, where the doctors are equally baffled. Foul play appears to have been ruled out, with Karnan Perumal saying that he and his wife would never be ‘crazy [enough] to burn our own baby’. Some people are saying the flames must be the work of a deity, while others suspect the use of combustible phosphorous in the materials used to build the couple’s home. Doctors are now considering whether baby Rahul is a victim of one of the strangest and most mysterious of phenomena said to affect the body – spontaneous human combustion But the doctors are now considering whether baby Rahul is a victim of one of the strangest and most mysterious of phenomena said to affect the body — spontaneous human combustion. ‘We are in a dilemma and haven’t come to any conclusion,’ says Dr Narayan Babu. ‘The parents have held that the baby burned instantaneously without any provocation. We are carrying out numerous tests. We are not saying it is SHC (spontaneous human combustion) until all the investigations are complete.’ Is it really possible for a baby to burst suddenly into flames? And if so, how on earth does it happen — and could other infants elsewhere in the world fall victim to the same extraordinary circumstances? Although spontaneous combustion has been written about for centuries, there are many who are sceptical about its existence. All too often, when presented with the grisly image of a pile of human ash with only the legs remaining, the doubters will insist that the victim probably died from falling asleep with a cigarette, or was sitting too near a fire. Such explanations may seem reasonable, but they ignore the fact that human bodies are extremely hard to burn. We are composed largely of water. And the bits of us that aren’t damp — especially our bones — require a huge and sustained amount of heat to reduce to ash.

A 36-year-old architect, Eniola Kiyesola, was allegedly beaten to death by land grabbers, on August 18, at Omo Ebi Bagidan Village, after he refused to give them the sum of N5,000 they were demanding for. According to sources, it was gathered that Kiyesola left the house after he bade his wife and kids goodbye, to the construction site where he was supervising an ongoing work when the land grabbers stormed the site. The culprits demanded the sum of N5,000, threatening that they would prevent the work from continuing if he does not settle them.

Modern techniques will enable a patient to be revived up to 24 hours after they stop breathing, Dr Sam Parnia says. The American critical care physician, who trained in London, said: ‘We may soon be rescuing people from death’s clutches hours, or even longer, after they have actually died.’ He claims the US actor James Gandolfini, star of The Sopranos – who died in June aged 51 in Rome – might have survived if he had suffered his massive heart attack in New York. ‘I believe if he died here, he could still be alive. We’d cool him down, pump oxygen to the tissues, which prevents them from dying,’ Dr Parnia told Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine. ‘Clinically dead, he could then be cared for by the cardiologist. He would make an angiogram, find the clot, take it out, put in a stent and we would restart the heart.’ Dr Parnia, whose new book on resuscitation science is called Erasing Death, said death should be reversible for many patients, providing they are in the right place getting the right treatment. ‘Of course we can’t rescue everybody and many people with heart attacks have other major problems,’ he said. ‘But if all the latest medical technologies and training had been implemented, which clearly hasn’t been done, then in principle the only people who should die and stay dead are those that have an underlying condition that is untreatable. ‘A heart attack is treatable. Blood loss as well. A terminal cancer isn’t, neither are many infections with multiresistant pathogens. In these cases, even if we’d restart the heart, it would stop again and again. ‘My basic message: The death we commonly perceive today in 2013 is a death that can be reversed.’ Dr Parnia, head of intensive care at the Stony Brook University Hospital in New York, said resuscitation figures tell their own story. The average resuscitation rate for cardiac arrest patients is 18 per cent in US hospitals and 16 per cent in Britain. But at his hospital it is 33 per cent – and the rate peaked at 38 per cent earlier this year. ‘Most, but not all of our patients, get discharged with no neurological damage whatsoever,’ he said, adding that it is a ‘widely held misconception’ – even among doctors – that the brain begins to suffer massive damage from oxygen deprivation three to five minutes after the heart stops. ‘In the past decade we have seen tremendous progress. With today’s medicine, we can bring people back to life up to one, maybe two hours, sometimes even longer, after their heart stopped beating and they have thus died by circulatory failure. ‘In the future, we will likely get better at reversing death.’ The techniques he advocates are not cryogenics – freezing the body immediately after death – but cooling it down to best preserve brain cells while keeping up the level of oxygen in the blood. This buys time to fix the underlying problem and restart the heart, he claims. He says that if someone collapses with a heart attack, call 999 then immediately place bags of frozen vegetables on them until the ambulance arrives, as it helps protect the brain. ‘It is possible that in 20 years, we may be able to restore people to life 12 hours or maybe even 24 hours after they have died. ‘You could call that resurrection, if you will. But I still call it resuscitation science.’
