In a statement to a blogger, Saint Obi’s family has debunked claims that his friends didn’t show up for his children’s naming ceremony or child dedication. Tinubu's lawyers, led by Wole Olanipekun (SAN), stated that the FCT is the 37th state for election purposes. The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has cautioned lawyers representing the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu at the ongoing Presidential Election Tribunal (PEPT) not to intimidate judges or the judiciary in general. The warning comes 48 hours after the PEPT reserved its decision on the petition brought by Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate Peter Obi against the proclamation of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 election. In their final written statement before the tribunal, Tinubu’s lawyers, led by Wole Olanipekun (SAN), stated that the FCT is the 37th state for election purposes and that any other interpretation would “lead to chaos, anarchy, and alteration of the very intention of the legislature.” COPDEM, however, told media in Abuja on Thursday that Chief Olanipekun’s statement to the tribunal was a threat to justice and democracy. The group’s spokesperson, Danjuma Garba Musa, said that Olanipekun’s submission could intimidate the Appeal Court justices hearing the case. COPDEM, therefore, asked President Tinubu to disown and immediately dissociate himself from such anti-democratic aberrations if he was not party to it. The group said: The threat to the judiciary and the rule of law is a major concern in addition to the increasing public outcry over the high-handed removal of subsidy that has plunged more Nigerians into poverty. Any threat to the judiciary is a threat to democracy, COPDEM believes in the rule of law and justice. Justice is the ultimate pillar of any democracy; it must be done and be seen to be done. COPDEM is in support and advocates for the absolute independence and integrity of the judiciary as fundamental to the success of our democracy and for the peace and unity of Nigeria as a nation. It is a threat to the judiciary and rule of law for a senior advocate of Nigeria to presume and invoke anarchy in Nigeria if the victory of his client Bola Tinubu is overturned by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) before the whole world. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a high-powered envoy to the Republic of Niger in the face of political uncertainty in the West African nation. The delegation is heading to Niger with a mandate to find a solution to the current political crisis engendered by the recent coup in the country. Tinubu, the Chairman of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS), charged the delegation to ensure a robust dialogue to end the impasse. The development is coming after the resolution reached at the end of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS held in Abuja last week. The delegation, headed by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), left for Niamey on Thursday following a briefing by President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. The former Nigerian Head of State is joined in the delegation by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray. The President has also sent a separate delegation, led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria on the Niger crisis. Briefing the two delegations, President Tinubu charged them to engage all stakeholders robustly to do whatever it takes to ensure a conclusive and amicable resolution of the situation in Niger for African peace and development, rather than a move to adopt the geopolitical positions of other nations. “We don’t want to hold brief for anybody. Our concern is democracy and the peace of the region,” the President said. Source: https://ribdo.com/news/tinubu-sends-high-powered-delegation-to-niger-libya-algeria-to-discuss-security-trade

Following the outcry that greeted the modalities of the Student Loan Law, the Federal Government on Monday lifted the restrictions on it, enabling students to access loans for higher education. Students are delighted with the move. VICTOR BILLY (UNIBEN) reports. When the Student Loan Bill was signed into Law by President Bola Tinubu on June 12, many praised the him for his resolve to make education accessible to all irrespective of tribe or creed. However, a critical look at the modalities by stakeholders suggested it would not work. To be eligible, an applicant’s income or family income must be less than N500,000 per annum. Students must also provide at least two guarantors, each of whom must either be a senior civil servant on at least level 12, a lawyer with at least 10 years’ post-call experience, or a judicial officer, or a Justice of Peace. Repayment begins two years after the completion of the participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. A beneficiary shall remit 10 per cent of their income to the Fund monthly. For the self-employed, 10 per cent of their monthly profit shall be remitted as part of the repayment plans. Also, defaulters risk a N500,000 fine, two years’ jail term or both when they fail to repay. But, on Monday, Tinubu approved the removal of restrictions on the student loan to make it available to any student or household that may desire it. Following the lifting of the strict requirements, students praised the President for his commitment to education and for having listening ears. Jeremiah Blessing, a 300-Level student at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, said increasing access to student loans is crucial because it addresses the financial barriers that have limited many students’ educational aspirations. With easier access to loans, more individuals from low-income backgrounds will have the chance to obtain a quality education and improve their prospects for a better future. She noted that the recent move by the president to relax the student loan criteria is a significant step that brings great relief to the average Nigerians who are passionate about education but struggle to meet the previous requirements. By making the criteria more accessible, it opens up opportunities for more students to pursue higher education, ultimately contributing to the development of the human capital and economy. She said: “The recent move by the president to relax the student loan criteria brings great relief to the very average Nigerians who cannot in any way meet up and are passionate about education. The men hoped to reach Europe but were surprised to land in Brazil. In a harrowing tale of survival and determination, four Nigerian stowaways endured a treacherous 14-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean while perched precariously on the rudder of a cargo ship before their miraculous rescue by Brazilian federal police in the port of Vitoria. As reported by Reuters, the four men found themselves in dire straits on their tenth day at sea when they ran out of food and drink. In a desperate bid to stay alive, they resorted to drinking the seawater that crashed just meters below their perilous perch. The incredible ordeal highlights the extreme risks some migrants are willing to take in pursuit of a better life. Upon their rescue, the men initially expressed relief, but that soon gave way to shock when they realized they had arrived on the shores of Brazil instead of their intended destination, Europe. Two of the men, upon their request, have been repatriated to Nigeria. However, Yeye and Roman Ebimene Friday, aged 35 and hailing from Bayelsa state, have applied for asylum in Brazil. THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has insisted that today’s protest against fuel subsidy removal would hold, as talks with the Federal Government on short-term palliatives collapsed yesterday. This came as the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, warned that police would not tolerate any violent protest called by the NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC. The Federal Government had, at yesterday’s meeting of Presidential Steering Committee on Palliatives, pleaded with labour to shelve the planned protest, saying it was doing everything possible to address its concerns. The IGP’s warning came on a day the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, directed its affiliates and the 36 state councils to fully participate in the protest. This is even as Pro-labour civil society groups, under the aegis of the Joint Action Front, JAF, and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, CDWR, asked members across the country to mobilize and join the protest. Recall that the Nigeria labour Congress, NLC, had earlier directed it affiliates nationwide to also mobilize for the protest scheduled for today But the IGP said the warning became necessary because of the ugly experiences of such protests in most major cosmopolitan cities in the country in the past. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed the IGP’s warning in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, said: “The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is deeply concerned about recent developments regarding planned nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC. “While being mindful of the right to peaceful protest, as enshrined in our constitution, the IGP urges all parties involved to ensure that the planned demonstrations are conducted in a peaceful manner to prevent being hijacked by miscreants. “The IGP, however, acknowledges the grievances raised by the labour unions and the importance of constructive dialogue, which is sine qua none, in addressing these issues. “In light of this, the IGP orders the Commissioners of Police in charge of various commands, and supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to engage in fruitful discussions with the NLC/TUC leadership to foster understanding and reach common grounds on the planned protests. “A peaceful and coordinated approach is crucial to achieving meaningful solutions and preventing any form of violence or disruptions to public order, should the protests persist. “The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens during the period of the planned protests as all necessary measures to facilitate the peaceful conduct of these demonstrations have been emplaced. “However, it is hereby reaffirmed that any attempt by miscreants to exploit the situation for violent purposes viz-a-viz vandalism, gangsterism, and extortion will be met with firm, professional and commensurate lawful approach. “The Police will not tolerate any act that threatens the peace and well-being of our country. In the light of the potential challenges posed by the planned protests, the Nigeria Police Force is fully prepared to deploy all available resources to maintain law and order and to protect the lives and property of our citizens. “The IGP, therefore, calls on all officers to be vigilant, professional, and uphold the highest standards of conduct during this period. “The Police boss urges all stakeholders, including the NLC, TUC, and other civil society groups, to embrace peaceful dialogue as the most effective means of resolving grievances “He also re-emphasized that the Police is committed to ensuring a secure and conducive environment for open dialogue, constructive engagement and mutual understanding for a seamless exercise of civil rights.” Source: https://ribdo.com/news/nlc-vows-to-go-ahead-with-protest-as-talks-with-fg-collapse

Some candidates for the 2024 General Certificate of Education Examination have lamented the high cost of obtaining the form. This is just as they applauded the ongoing free distribution of the forms by the lawmaker representing Eti-Osa Constituency 02 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Engr Gbolahan Yishawu. The 11th edition of GOY free GCE forms distribution commenced on Monday, July 31 and it is slated to end by August 31, 2023. The candidates, while speaking on the occasion of the free forms distribution, decried the high rate of the forms this year compared to those of past years. One of the beneficiaries, Peace Zuniji, who expressed optimism about gaining admission into a higher institution of learning with the free GCE forms, said it was an advantage for those who could not afford to pay the huge amount of money at this time of economic crunch in the country. According to him, This will allow me to study further because my dream is to become a lawyer. This brings my future close to me. I will rewrite my two subjects; Literature-in-English and Government that will qualify me to study law in the university. I want to make it through this GCE. “This is a great privilege despite the economic hardship in the country that is affecting the people. It is not easy for those who have children coupled with other responsibilities. “The price of the GCE form is on the high side and this is an advantage for those who want to further their education to realise their dreams. This will help them to study the courses they have in mind. The lawmaker should continue to do what he knows how to do,” he said. Another beneficiary, Miss Oyewole Saidat, stated that the lawmaker did well considering the price of the form which some might not be able to afford. A friend told me about the free GCE forms and I want to appeal to him not to stop. Imagine me running around to look for money to buy GCE form in this economy. I want to say thank you. I urge him not to relent,” she said. The protests are against the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has extended an invitation to self-acclaimed Biafran agitator, Simon Ekpa, and his group for a dialogue in response to the ongoing sit-at-home protests. These protests are in opposition to the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze, announced in a statement issued on Monday. He strongly condemned the persistent calls for sit-at-home protests and urged people to disregard them. Chief Iwuanyanwu also cautioned all security operatives in the South-East to exercise utmost prudence in their official duties to prevent further loss of innocent lives in the Igbo-land. The Ohanaeze President General expressed deep sympathy for the families who have lost loved ones and properties during these unfortunate events. He called for the cooperation of all stakeholders in order to address the grievances effectively. He said, “It is indeed very disheartening that the people of South East of Nigeria are being subjected to hardships by the incessant call for sit-at-home. Unfortunately several non-state actors in an attempt to enforce the order have unleashed mayhem on the people. As a result, several people have been killed, and maimed and properties worth millions of Naira have been destroyed. In addition, the sit-at-home order has been instilling fears and trepidation in the good people of the South East, making it difficult for people to come out to transact their lawful businesses on the sit-at-home days. “The South-East is noted for micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises, indigenous manufacturing, fabrication, and agro-allied industries. To this end, several authorities have put the losses encountered by the people of South East at trillions of Naira on each sit-at-home day. The South East has witnessed the loss of clients and customers who find alternatives because of the unstable business environment in the South East. “The food transporters to the South East charge more for a trip to the South East because of these sit-at-home orders. Furthermore, insecurity and unknown gunmen have been on the increase because of the sit-at-home order. Worst still, over 250 persons are estimated to have lost their lives through the enforcement of the sit-at-home order. “As a father, I hereby request Mr. Simon Ekpa and his group for a discussion and an opportunity to air their grievances. I urge the security operatives to exercise the highest degree of prudence in the discharge of their official duties to avoid further loss of innocent lives in Igbo-land.” Source: https://ribdo.com/news/ohanaeze-ndigbo-invites-simon-ekpa-to-discuss-sit-at-home-protests

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS on Sunday countered a Twitter user’s claim that a recent outreach carried out by the Red Cross shows a spike in HIV cases in Abuja. The doctor with the Twitter handle #Firstdoctors last week shared a tweet saying Red Cross reportedly ran a test on 197 persons in Abuja and that 119 of the tests came back positive with 60 per cent of those tests being males. NACA, reacting to his Tweet, asked the doctor to confirm when and where the outreach occurred. The doctor appeared not to have the answers to the questions posed and so he deleted his tweet. In a statement released today July 30, NACA said the information is false. The agency added that the false statement has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities that deal with misinformation for appropriate actions. The statement said, “Statement on high HIV prevalence rates in Abuja: After investigation and reaching out to The Nigerian Red Cross Society (#nrcs_ng), CSOs, CBOs, and other Implementing Partners IPs operating in Abuja, we confirm the statement is entirely FALSE. #HIVPrevention #SafeSex. “There was no outreach conducted in Abuja, and the claim that 199 people tested positive out of 197 is false. The accurate data shows that Abuja’s HIV prevalence rate remains at 1.3%, while Nigeria has a prevalence rate of 1.3%. “Additionally, it is essential to clarify that no outreach anywhere in Nigeria could yield a positive rate of 60%. Such a high prevalence rate is not possible in Nigeria or any other country. The false statement has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities that deal with misinformation for appropriate actions. “As the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, we are dedicated to promoting safe sexual practices, including advocating for abstinence and the correct use of condoms to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. “However, we strongly condemn the use of false statistics to drive this critical message. It is essential to disseminate accurate information to effectively combat HIV/AIDS and promote public health. “We urge all Nigerians to be faithful to their partners and consistently practice safe sex to protect themselves and others from HIV and other infections. Remember, health is wealth, and each of us must take responsibility for our well-being.” Source:: https://ribdo.com/news/naca-debunks-claims-of-hiv-spike-in-abuja
