There is an urgent need to step up preventive and treatment efforts for heart failure because the condition is now a major public health problem, says Consultant Cardiologist and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Dr Onye Achilihu.
Dr Achilihu, speaking at the 2018 Novartis International Cardiovascular Summit recently in Lagos which focused on Heart Failure management, said that despite the availability of effective treatment options for heart failure, a large number of eligible patients are not receiving optimal care for the condition.
The distinguished physician noted that heart failure as a major public health concern is now responsible for substantial mortality and morbidity, adding that much more should be done to ensure patients of this condition get the deserved optimal care.
Dr Achilihu who made a presentation on: “What’s in Store for the Future of Heart Failure Therapy?”, said advances in heart failure treatment has helped to ensure that there is increased attention to treatment and recognition of the fact that patients require improved, evidence-based therapies.
The challenges for the future of heart failure management, he said, involve ensuring that there is a dramatic change in how patients with heart failure are treated in the community, and the facilitation of a rational approach to the management of the chronic disease.
The respected physician also called for proper understanding and respect for physicians treating heart failure patients. He lamented that while most cancer patients are cared for by specialists (oncologists) who are often appreciated for prescribing expensive drugs, most heart failure patients are usually cared for by generalists, adding that heart failure physicians are equally never appreciated for prescribing optimal medical therapy for patients.
