Politics / 5 Historic Times African Countries Attempted To Merge But Failed by Romanblackjezzy(m): 12:53pm On May 13, 2018
Africa is the only continent in the world that was divided among European colonialists in 1884 in what was termed the Scramble for Africa. So many tribes were divided by colonial borders while others were merged with other tribes.

Following the independence struggle in the continent, Tanzania became the only African country formed by a merger of two states, Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

However, there were several attempts by other states during the post-colonial era to merge politically and economically, yet failed to come to a consensus.

Another attempt is being made by the six-member East African Community (EAC) consisting of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

They attempted to merge politically after a proposal was made in 2004 to create the East African Federation. In 2016, they instead, favoured a confederation which is yet to be finalized.

Before the EAC, history has recorded five attempts made by African nations to merge but failed. Read about them below.

Senegambia Confederation (1982-1989)
In 1982, Senegal and Gambia agreed to form the Senegambia Confederation to establish a cooperation between the two neighbours. Senegal was the most interested party as they feared national instability caused by uprisings in the Gambia.

An attempt to have a unified state in the 8 years of signing the agreement failed and Senegal dissolved the confederation in 1989 as the Gambia showed no interest. This 8-year union is one of the longest in Africa.

Federation of Arab Republics (1972-1977)

In 1972, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi attempted to build a Pan-Arab state and succeeded in merging his country with Egypt and Syria under the umbrella Federation of Arab Republics. He also invited Iraq and Sudan to join the Federation.

The federation was formed after the three states approved a referendum in each country. However, they disagreed on many terms of the merger which broke down relations among the countries.

The federation ended in 1977.

Arab Islamic Republic (1974)

In 1974, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi proposed a merger with Tunisia and be called Arab Islamic Republic. This was during the difficulties he faced in creating the Federation of Arab Republics with Egypt and Syria.

The two heads of state agreed to the merger but it was never implemented.

The 2004 proposed East African Federation flag

East African Federation (1960-1964)

In 1960, prior to the declaration of independence in Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda and Zanzibar, a union between the four British territories was proposed.

Tanganyika wanted to delay its imminent independence in 1960 so that the four territories could achieve independence together as one federation.

All the leaders agreed in 1963 to work towards a federation, but by 1964, the plan collapsed after disputes over leadership the federation among others. Tanganyika and Zanzibar eventually united in 1964 to form Tanzania.

United Arab Republic (1958-1961)

This was a short-lived Pan-Arab state born out of the union of Egypt and Syria. The republic was led by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser who carried out a crackdown against Syrian Communists and opponents of the union immediately after taking leadership.

The UAR adopted a flag based on the Arab Liberation Flag of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, but with two stars to represent the two parts of the UAR. This has been the official flag of Syria since 1980.

So many issues started marring the republic including displeasure that the UAR turned into a state completely dominated by Egyptians. Nasser demanded that all political parties in Syria be dismantled, thereby diminishing Syrian political life.

All the power fell in the hands of the Egyptians and there was growing tension in Syria. In 1961, the Syrian military staged a coup and declared Syria’s independence from the UAR.

Crime / Egypt Charges Suspects For ‘selling Children’ Online by Romanblackjezzy(m): 2:35pm On Apr 15, 2018
Egyptian prosecutors have referred suspects accused of “selling” children online to the criminal court, the state-run National Council for Childhood and Motherhood said.

According to state TV, the council’s Secretary-General, Azza El-Ashmawy, said in a statement that the prosecutor general has referred them to court on child-trafficking charges.

“This is the first time that online child trafficking has been prosecuted,” El-Ashmawy said.

In February the child hotline run by the council learnt about a website that sells children in Egypt. The website displayed children for sale and received purchase requests from families inside and outside the country.

It filed a case against the site with the prosecutor general’s office. The suspects were arrested at the end of February, she added.

Egypt’s youngest detainee: 14-month-old girl arrested

Last January, the Egyptian parliament passed a legislative amendment stipulating stricter penalties for child abduction. Penalties now range from ten to 20 years for abductors, with the death sentence stipulated when the kidnapped children are also subjected to rape or sexual abuse.

Prior to the amendment, a life sentence (25 years) was the maximum penalty in child abduction cases.

The legislative amendment came after a significant rise in reported child abduction cases in Egypt.

Foreign Affairs / Gaddafi’s Son Saif Al-islam To Run For Libya President In 2018 by Romanblackjezzy(m): 6:20pm On Dec 26, 2017
A spokesperson for the Gadaffi family has said that Saif al-Islam Gadaffi, the son of the former Libyan leader will contest in the upcoming presidential elections.

Basem al-Hashimi al-Soul told the influential local media agency, Egypt Today, that Saif al-Islam has the support and credentials required to end the chaos that has gripped Libya since the overthrow of his father Muammar Gadaffi in 2011.

“Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the former Libyan president, enjoys the support of major tribes in Libya so he can run for the upcoming presidential elections due in 2018,” said Libyan Tribal Chief and spokesperson of the Gaddafi family, Basem al-Hashimi al-Soul

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the former Libyan president, enjoys the support of major tribes in Libya so he can run for the upcoming presidential elections due in 2018
Al-Soul says that a platform to launch the former first son’s presidential campaign will soon be launched.

“The platform includes some procedures that Saif al-Islam hopes the United Nations would adopt to help Libya move from the incumbent transitional period to stability.”

Today, Libya is grappling with insecurity as different factions control different parts of the country.

Saif al-Islam Gadaffi hopes to unify the factions and restore peace and stability in the country that was once prosperous under his father’s rule.

“Saif al-Islam plans to impose more security and stability in accordance with the Libyan geography and in coordination with all Libyan factions,” al-Soul manifested.

This development follows the weekend announcement by the Eastern Libyan military commander, Khalifa Haftar, that he ‘would listen to the will of the free Libyan people’, interpreted as an indication that he might run in next year’s elections.

The United Nations backed Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) has indicated that elections may be held in mid-2018.

“We believe that presidential elections will be held in the middle of 2018,” Mohamed Siala, GNA foreign minister, speaking to foreign reporters at the Valdai Panel Discussion in Russia.

Saif Al-Islam was released in June this year after six years of captivity by a militia group in the Libyan town of Zintan.

He had been captured in November 2011 after the fall of his father’s regime, and he was subsequently sentenced to death in absentia by a court in Tripoli.

Following his release, the International Criminal Court ordered for his arrest and surrender, which was backed by the GNA.

He is wanted by the ICC on charges of crimes against humanity during his father’s unsuccessful attempts to put down the rebellion that eventually led to the fall of his regime.

The United Nations is supporting the voter registration process as it seeks to reconcile rival factions and relaunch a political transition that would lead to new polls.

The UN Libya mission has previously said it hopes elections can be held by the end of next year, but has also acknowledged complex security, political and legislative challenges to organising a vote.

Libya last held elections in 2014 but the results were disputed, deepening divisions that emerged after the country’s 2011 uprising.

The poll led to an escalation of armed conflict and to rival parliaments and governments being set up in the capital and the east. www.skyafrica24.com

Crime / Malaysia To Hang 2 Nigerians For Drug Trafficking by Romanblackjezzy(m): 9:06am On Dec 22, 2017
Kuala Lumpur — A court in Malaysia has sentenced two Nigerian students to death by hanging for trafficking hard drug.
A High Court Judge, Datuk Abdul Halim Aman sitting in Shah Alam ruled that Mustafa Azmir, 28, and Jude Nnamdi Achonye, 30 be hanged after convicting them.
Their ordeal started three years ago when the two students of a private university in Kuala Lumpur were arrested for being in possession of several boxes that contained 3.5kg of methamphetamine.
They were accused of trafficking the drugs at an apartment in Petaling Jaya at 3.30pm on September 2, 2014 which is an offense under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 of Malaysia.
In his ruling, the judge said the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against the convicts and the court had studied testimonies from 13 prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses, alongside 73 exhibits tendered during the trial.
“The defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the end of this case and presented no testimony that thoroughly refutes the prosecution. Besides that, there were also discrepancies in testimonies of the accused and their defence only amounted to denial without concrete evidence,” he said.
Mustafa and Achonye were represented by lawyer Leonard Anselm Gomes while Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammed Rehan Mohammed Aris represented the prosecution. www.skyafrica24.com
Foreign Affairs / Namibia: First Lady Warns Against Facebook Scams by Romanblackjezzy(m): 4:09pm On Dec 17, 2017
THE Office of the First Lady has issued an alert on the bogus use of her name, particularly on popular social media site Facebook, during the holiday season when the office will be closed.
In a year-end media release issued on Friday, technical director in the Office of the First Lady Meunajo Tjiroze said criminals take advantage of this time to disseminate false information and defraud people online as they are aware that the office is closed and the public has no means of verifying false information.
Tjiroze also said that throughout 2017 the First Lady’s office saw an increase in fake accounts in the name of ‘Monica Geingos’.
“These fake accounts send out friend requests and upon acceptance, make all types of claims and promises. The details of the claims may vary, however the modus operandi remains the same as they always want you to deposit money into their accounts before the promise is fulfilled,” Tjiroze explained.
The statement said the First Lady has a verified account which is named ‘Monica Geingos, The First Lady of Namibia (FLON)’, which has a blue verification tick.
“FLON does not have a private Facebook account and does also not engage personally with individuals on the site, so to make their bogus accounts look legit, they copy and paste all original statements and posts, including pictures to make it seem like it’s FLON’s account,” he said.
Tjiroze announced that the Office of the First Lady will be closed between 18 December and 05 January 2018.

Only in Nigeria will the security forces brutalize innocent defenseless civilians then tag them as terrorist and then rush to court to compel the relatives of the dead to pay for the cost of the bullets used in killing their loved ones.

the Nigerian police organzation is now a terrorist organization, we are only waiting for a UN report to indict them because the definition of terrorism is the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians. Sports / Diego Maradona Calls For His Own Daughter To Be JAILED by Romanblackjezzy(m): 11:13am On Nov 26, 2017
Diego Maradona has accused his two daughters of stealing £3.4million from him and has called for one of them to be jailed.

The Argentine World Cup winner also accused his wife of being involved in the alleged theft, alleging they stashed some of the money in Uruguay. The 57-year-old football legend is suing ex-wife Claudia Villafane and daughters Dalma and Giannina The former Barcelona player says his family transferred stolen cash to a bank account in Uruguay and also used his money to buy up property in the USA. Now Maradona's lawyer claims 28-year-old Giannina was in Uruguay for a 'few hours' in August, according to Spanish sports news outlet Marca.
The lawyer said: 'I say to you that she has an account in Uruguay, her child takes the money and puts it into another.
If that is the case, if there is money there like we think, then there is no option other than to be put in custody.'

Giannina responded to the allegation on Twitter, saying: 'They know where I live and they can come when they want.

'Thanks for all the warm messages. I am fine with myself inside, I have forgiven worse from him and I will do the same now.'
Ms Villafane - who stands accused of masterminding the alleged fraud - was married to former cocaine addict Maradona from 1998 to 2003.

The footballer - who also played for Napoli and Boca Juniors - retired from playing in 1997.

He now manages Fujairah SC football club in the United Arab Emirates.
