Thx Honeric01, will look into it.
SportsLate Nigerian Boxer - Young Ali by Romeo4real(op): 1:22am On Jun 08, 2011
Hello All,

I am looking to locate the family(specifically wife & child) of late Nigerian boxer - Young Ali (Asymin Mustapha - not sure about the spelling). His wife was pregnant with their unborn child at the time of his death.

Tragically Young Ali died after being in a coma for five months as a result of a KO sustained in the 6th round of his fight with Ireland's Barry McGuigan in June 1982, and I am doing this as a favor to Barry, who is desperate to get in touch with them.

This is a genuine post, so no time wasters please. Any help is welcome. You can reach me at - gmfree@live.co.uk

Thank you.

For the above, did you remember i asked if exercise could affect periods once before, well i found out other things.
I remember answering this question. Yes, exercise can indeed affect a woman's period, but usually if done in an extreme fashion. Your weight/diet have a bigger bearing on your periods than exercise. It is possible that normal exercise can alter the body's normal hormone balance, but this is highly unusual.

If you indeed had the "Flu", you most certainly would not be able to do any type of training or walking. You are most likely suffering from a common cold or a minor infection. However, it is better NOT to indulge in any form of exercise until your symptoms disappear, so as to give your immune system a chance to fight off the infection.
Did you take Bromergon? If so, what for? It is use to treat a number of ailments, namely - menstrual disorders, infertility, prevention & suppression of lactation, Parkinson's disease amongst other. It has also been know to aid weight loss.

lets settle for the fact that I'm trying to burn calories.
Eating properly, and eating the right stuff actually helps you burn more calories. Skipping meals is ALWAYS counter productive in a weight loss program and will not help you in any appreciable way - I've covered the issue many times here.

There are some features of metabolic syndrome I may be genetically predisposed to
What syndrome? Do you want to share this with us?

@Shy-One -

I don't diet - I eat what my body craves
This is your "diet". Anything your meals consist of, is considered a "diet".

I used to drink coffee - NOT ANYMORE - just green tea(hot)
This is the same thing. Tea contains as much Caffeine as Coffee. If you are taking this in the morning, it is because you skip breakfast and your body craves the Caffeine in the Coffee/Tea to give you an energy boost. This is the normal function of Tea/ Coffee in the morning.

I am not hungry in the morning or at lunch time and usually eat around 2-3pm for the first time
Again, this is totally counter productive and you do yourself no favors here. The reason you are not hungry at breakfast/ lunch is because you are used to not eating at this time (as you have confirmed) and your body has simply adapted - though it will still need the Caffeine boost to have any semblance of proper function

I would urge you to maintain proper eating habits - even if you are maintaining your weight, so that your body can function at its optimum level.

I make that 9 miles in about 12hrs! How long have you been doing this to "maintain"?What is you current height/weight ratio? And what is your diet like?

@Nikkimono -

What is your goal and target weight? Skipping Breakfast and lunch will not help you in the long run as its not sustainable. Skipping meals is always counter productive in a weight loss program. You also need to increase your water intake.
Hope the test goes well. Moving forward, don't leave yourself exposed again!

@Gen B -

There's a school of thought that advises against drinking too much water with meals. Firstly, it dilutes the stomach acid and results in inefficient digestion, secondly, it can make the food mass quite fluid, which makes it empty from the stomach too quickly before the gastric acids and enzymes have had time to do their job properly. This also results in inefficient digestion. Thirdly, it makes u feel full - which is not necessary, unless you feel you are eating too much in the first place. Also, it has been noted that animals do NOT drink water with their food, but do it sometime after eating, or even at a totally separate time.

@1honeybee -

A target weight of 38kg will most certainly be underweight - even with your height. Using these figures, your BMI is 15.2, which is underweight.
Why is this your target weight? You are not currently overweight, so are you trying to achieve something? Do let us know.
Also, you do need to overhaul your diet. Breakfast is a MUST, and should be part of your 3 meals a day, inc lunch! You cannot skip any of these meals - if you are serious about your health. Also, water is a necessity, irrespective of whether you like the taste or not.

@Modath & HG - I no dey vex o! Just been v.busy in good ol' naija. Modath, keep working that 30day shred!
Just wading into the Honey vs Sugar debate. From a weight loss point of view, they are more or less the same. Ditto from a nutitional point of view. The differences are v. minor.
Generally though, Honey can be said to be marginally better than refined table sugar - but not in calorific terms. It contain various compounds and enzymes which are beneficial, anti bacterial properties, various gastro-intestinal benefits, trace amounts of vitamins, and even a negligible amount of fibre - though all this varies according to the plants/flower/pollen/location, etc the honey is from,
On the other hand, refined sugar has been implicated in various illnesses, cancers and allergies. Artificial sweeteners are much much worse and should be avoided at all costs - no matter what brand it is.
A rule of thumb is to stay away from anything that says "low sugar" or "zero calories" and is still sweet. Most chewing gums contain them.
If taking honey, make sure its untreated and unrefined. Better still cut out all sweet stuff. It is simply unnecessary; otherwise, exercise a LOT more!

Dear All,

My observation is that quite a few individuals on this thread are not really serious about losing weight, much less in living a healthy lifestyle.
I suspect most here actually enjoy the camaraderie inherent in just being part of the thread, rather than in the weight loss itself.
Some breeze by, declare their intentions, then nothing else is heard again. Others pop up spontaneously, post a few comments, only to disappear just as spontaneously. Then there are some who stay, post logs, but cannot seem to do anything past that.
May i say that whilst its is ok to post your logs, the primary purpose of the thread (from my understanding) is to support, encourage and assist those who want to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle, NOT log posting - (if i am wrong, someone pls correct me)

Yes, most desire to lose weight, but desire alone never achieves anything. The difference in wanting something, and actually achieving it lies in doing what it takes; And what it takes is ALWAYS different from what you WANT to do, or what you THINK you can do. It is simply about what you NEED to do.
To illustrate my point simply, if an exam pass mark is 47%, and you try your "best" and acheive a mark of 46%, you would still have failed. It is inconsequential how "hard" you tried,or how "difficult" it was. This is why trying NEVER got anybody anything. You dont need to try, all you have to do is do what is neccesary; no matter how easy, or difficult it may be.

Everyone is different, some may have to try harder, some not try that much; but the procedure is the same for all - doing whatever it takes.
If it takes consitency in ur meals, then just DO it. If it takes a structured exercise program, just DO it. If you NEED to increase you intensity, or do more, just Do it! There is no point in wasting your time, and other peoples time, if you are not prepared to do what is neccessary.
Weight loss is about structure and consistency - in your eating & exercise plans - every single day. It is not easy, and it is not supposed to be.
You just NEED to do whatever it takes, to get what you want.

All the best,
R4R

Here it is finally!. Im sending you links, as they are not easy to describe. I hope they help. The stretches will def help the sciatica, so keep doing them.

Also try these exercises for the sciatica - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ0882p1tzc, and you can also include some standing Oblique Twists - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdhWBp5lWqc. Do keep your feet a bit more together than in the video, and don't do it as fast. Make sure ur abdominals are tensed as you do the exercise.

For the shoulders, do the stretches and strengthening exercises below -

HealthRe: Born With Short Umbilical Cord(specialadvice) by Romeo4real(m): 3:06pm On Feb 16, 2011
@nath01 -

Did some research on Short Umbilical Cord Syndrome (SUC) and the conclusion is that no one knows why it occurs, nor how it can be prevented. It is a well known, but little understood phenomena. The normal length of the umbilical cord can vary from no cord at all(achordia), to up to 300cm, with diameters up to 3 cm. The average length is 55cm long, but about 5% of cords are shorter than 35cm. Also, for unknown reasons, most cords coil to the left.
Whilst the cause of differences in cord length are unknown, the length of the cord is thought to reflect movement of the fetus in utero. Short cords are associated with some type constraint in the uterus, and the inability of the fetus to move properly. This may indicate fetuses with gross structural or functional limb defects that limited intrauterine movement.

It seems the umbilical cord growth occurs in response to tensile forces relating to intrauterine space availability and fetal movement during early development. Although short cords have been blamed for the inability of some fetuses to deliver vaginally, available data suggest that vaginal delivery can take place with cords as short as 13cm , which is much shorter than the normal range. Moreover if a cord is too short to deliver vaginally, fetal heart monitoring will indicate stress, in which case a CS will be performed. Whilst SUC syndrome does not normally lead to fatality of the child, or of the mother,a short umbilical cord (<30 cm) can affect the fetus in that fetal movements can cause cord compression, constriction and ruptures; which can be fatal.

Also, assessing cord length prenatally is almost impossible, but ultrasound scans may be used to detect it on occasion. Some references below.

@Poster -

Do not listen to the nonsense posted here. Whilst one of the posters is correct in SOME of what he said, anxiety attacks do NOT lead to stroke, and no tea or vitamins can prevent a stroke.
There are quite a few factors that affect a persons likelyhood of having a stroke; namley heart disease, high cholesterol levels, being overweight, clogged ateries, high blood pressure, diabetes, congenital defects, etc.
Almost all of these can be mitigated by a change in lifestyle and the proper medication. A healthy diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish, and low in red meat, salt and fat will help, in addition to a . regime of daily exercise.
They can also be put medication that will lower the blood pressure and control blood sugar levels if apporpriate.

R4R - I think i have injured my left leg, when is what i dont know but it became worse during the skips this evening. The muscle is just that part between my calve and the ankle by the side. I will try apply some balm tonight and see how it goes tomorrow.
I am trying to think what you could have done, as the part you describe is not normally prone to any injury involving general exercise. Did u bang it on something?
Just to confirm, is it on the SIDE of your LEFT leg, BETWEEN the CALF and the ANKLE? If that is correct, it would be in the middle of the area between your knee and your ankle. Right?

Modath, Pele! Both prescribed drugs are major painkillers with major side effects. Where does it hurt on your shoulder? I will give you some shoulder strengthening exercises to try out. The shoulder is quite a complicated joint prone to various injuries, and it never seems to heal properly.
I would also like you to try the Taebo DVD you have for a while and see how that helps with the back pain. The theory is that constant twisting movements in the body - especially at the waist and back can help free trapped nerves, or knotted muscles.

@HG -

you said something about STANDARD in exercising when replying genB. What is that about cos i dont intend ever joining a gym o, how do i get what these standards are?
That is Ok. The reply is specific to Gen B, because with his height/weight combo, and being a male, he would benefit more from using a gym; as he would find it easier to build muscle mass, thereby increasing his metabolic rate and calorific expenditure, and losing fat as a result.

Everyone WILL benefit from using a gym in a weight loss program for the obvious reasons - variety, easier motivation, more focus, diff machines/exercises, etc, however, you can achieve the same results at home, but be aware it will take far more motivation and commitment on your part.

Look at the above meals and tell me how it can be 1600 calories because am sure what i ave above is more than 2500 calories
This is almost impossible for me to do, as there is quite some information missing -

1 glass chocolate protein shake - How many scoops in the glass? How many calories per scoop?

2 servings rice n beans + 6 small pieces of dodo + 1 hardboiled egg -How big is a "serving"? How much oil use in the preparation?

6 small bananas - How small are these bananas?

2 servings mixed vegetable casserole + 2 tbspns of rice + 4 pcs of plantain + 1 meat - What else is in the caserole? How much oil was used?

At a glance, i would say it's definitely above 1600 and close to 200s-2500. You need to be more consistent with your meal plan. Sometimes not enough, sometimes, too much. This log here is definitely too much for the amount of exercise you are undertaking at the moment.

Where is Omotoyen? She is the calorie counting guru here.

@Carpe Diem -

Fancy starting a fitness and nutrition thread specifically for pregnancy?
A very good idea! Will def look into it. I actually guest write for a naija based pregnancy mag called FabPregnancy.

I was going to to run the london marathon this year but my pregnancy has put paid to that. I'll probably just walk it.
Good idea, and I would advise against walking it as well. Obviously, no more Muay Thai for you anymore. Just take things easy and get lots of rest. You will have all the time after the baby to exercise to your hearts content and run all the marathons in the world!

I use a garmin watch with a heart rate monitor that I strap around my chest when I go running and for strength training
Heart Rate Monitors are safe, and have no harmful effect on a developing fetus as they use ultra low frequency radio waves, or even bluetooth to transmit signals. More importantly, forget any type of intense exercise - just to be on the safe side. No ab work, crunches, situps, or any jarring type exercises (running, jumping, skipping, etc). Gentle exercise is OK if you must. You can still do leg work gently - squats, extensions, etc.
Go swimming -  as the water cushions the body, whilst still allowing for exercise. Also try yoga. The techniques will prove indispensable in the later months when things become more difficult.
