Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has declared Thursday, August 30, as work-free day to enable public servants participate in the continuous voter registration exercise in the state.

Akeredolu, according to a statement on Wednesday by Mr Yemi Olowolabi, the State Commissioner for Information, in Akure, made the declaration following a resolution of the State Executive Council.

The CVR, which was to have been suspended two weeks ago ahead of the 2019 general elections, was extended to enable more people register.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it would now be suspended on Friday, Aug. 31, until after the 2019 elections.

A Good Samaritan got more than he bargained for while trying to rescue two children from their abusive mother in imiringi, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as he was stoned in the process.

However, the children were eventually rescued by an NGO, DO Foundation, through its Executive Director, Dise Ogbise-Erhisere, who is also the Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA Sagbama branch.

It was gathered that the mother of the children, had on several occasions, consistently assaulted her children and the concerned neighbor, who intervened, was injured with a big stone aimed at him by the lady. One Chidiebere Onwumere has regained his freedom, 2 years after being wrongly imprisoned for causing the death of Uzochi Chinyere, a neighbor he rushed to the hospital, following a drug overdose in Abia State

In an interview with AFN, on Tuesday, while recounting how it happened, he said, “I got home that day, around 6pm, only to see my neighbour lying helpless and I decided to help her to the hospital with the help of other neighbors.

A pastor who resides within the neighborhood, took us with his car to a nearby hospital called Shiloh hospital, where the doctor asked us to deposit N5000 to conduct a text that would decide exactly what was wrong with her.

I and some other neighbours contributed the money. When the result came out, the doctor told us that she was on substance overdose and was knocked out by the illegal substance. He assured us that she would be well again.

However, the next morning, Mr Promise, the deceased’s elder brother, arrived the hospital and insisted on taking her away to another hospital against the doctor’s advice.

After a few days, he came back to our compound and took me to World Bank police station, Aba, where he handed me over to the police, claiming that I beat his sister to death.

Despite pleas that my hands were clean and that there was a doctor’s report stating that their sister died of substance abuse, Promise insisted and filed a murder charge against me.

I was arraigned on suit no. U/520c/2016 and remanded in prison custody since June 2016. The United States Embassy has announced the temporary closure of its consular section in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The embassy disclosed this on its website on Tuesday, although no reason was given for the announcement.

“Until further notice, all consular appointments at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja have temporarily ceased for both visas and for American Citizen Services (ACS).

“Consular functions in U.S. Consulate Lagos are not affected and will continue,” it said.

It disclosed that scheduled visa and ACS applicants for Abuja would be contacted for rescheduling.

A bus hit another vehicle at high speed and then rolled over four times, killing at least 24 people and injuring 19 while smashing into several houses along a highway near Ecuador’s capital early Tuesday, officials said.

The Colombian-registered bus was traveling to Quito when it hit a smaller vehicle in an area known as dead man’s curve at about 3 a.m., Ecuadorean authorities said.

Col. Wilson Pavon, head of Ecuador’s transit police, said the majority of the passengers aboard were Colombians, but some Venezuelans were also among the dead.

Three people, including two minors, traveling in the smaller vehicle also died.

A small fleet of ambulances and first responders rushed to the crash site about two hours from Quito before dawn.

They found the severely wrecked bus overturned and several homes adjacent to the highway damaged and strewn with metal debris.

Gen. Patricio Carillo of the Ecuadorean police told local reporters that it appeared the bus driver lost control and hit an oncoming car before crashing into poles and houses as it rolled over four times.

The investigation was continuing and the driver is hospitalized among the injured, Carillo said.

Officials spent the early morning combing through the bus and removing the victims.

“Among the tasks is identifying the bodies of the dead and coordinating with authorities in Colombia and Venezuela for their return,” Carillo said.

It was the second bus tragedy in less than three days in Ecuador.

On Sunday, 12 people were killed and 30 more were injured when a bus carrying fans of an Ecuadorean soccer team overturned on a highway after a game.

Late Monday, relatives of the victims bid farewell to their loved ones at a collective wake held at the Barcelona club’s stadium in Guayaquil.

Police were still investigating the cause of that crash, but some witnesses told local media the bus carrying members of the Sur Oscura fan club that accompanies Barcelona to all its away games was seen trying to overtake other vehicles shortly before the crash.

Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim idris, has  appointed a new Commissioner of Police as the overall head of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad nationwide.

This is sequel to the order given by the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for the overhaul of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

A release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Ag. DCP Jimoh Moshood, posted on the verified Facebook wall of the NPF reads:1 The Inspector General of Police in compliance with the Presidential directives has ordered the immediate overhauling of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to discuss complaints and allegations on human rights violations against some of the staff of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) from members of the public in some parts of the Country.2. In the new arrangement, a new Commissioner of Police has been appointed as the overall head of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad nationwide.

3. The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad previously under the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (FCIID) is from now on to run under the Department of Operations, Force Headquarters Abuja. The Commissioner of Police (FSARS) is answerable to the Inspector General of Police through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Department of Operations.


4. In observance of full compliance with the Presidential directives, the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad will be intelligence driven and will be restricted to the prevention and detection of Armed Robbery, kidnapping and the apprehension of offenders linked to the stated offences only.

5. New FSARS Commanders are being appointed for the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) across the country that will now exist and run in the State and Zonal Commands under the Commissioner of Police (F-SARS) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. A Federal SARS Commander of a Rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) but not below Superintendent of Police (SP) will be in charge of FSARS in State and Zonal Commands across the Country.

6. All Commissioners of Police have been directed by the Inspector General of Police to comply with this directive with immediate effect and warn their people not to pose as SARS operatives. The IGP X-Squad and Monitoring Unit have been mandated to go round the Commands and Police Formations nationwide to make sure strict compliance with the Presidential directives and apprehend any erring police officer.


7. A new Standard Operational Guidelines and Procedures, and code of conduct for all FSARS staff to make sure that the operations of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad is in strict adherence to the rule of law and with due regards to international human rights law and constitutionally guaranteed rights of suspects will be enforced in totality by the Commissioner of Police, FSARS. Other measures to be implemented by the Force in observance of full compliance with the presidential directives are as follows:

i. Human Rights Desk Officers for FSARS in every State to take complaints from the public and send same to Force Headquarters, the officer will be answerable to the Commissioner of Police, FSARS at the Force Headquarters and not Commander FSARS in the States.

ii. Medical/Psychological evaluation of all FSARS staff will be carried out immediately.

iii. Redesigning of new uniform with identity name tag for all FSARS staff throughout the Country will be done immediately.

iv. Henceforth, FSARS staff will not do Stop and Search duties except on distress call to respond to armed robbery and kidnapping offences only.


8. The Force will be transparent, coöperate, and work cordially with the National Human Right Commission on the special panel that will conduct an investigation of the alleged unlawful activities of FSARS to address grievances from the public against the staff of FSARS in compliance with the presidential directives.

9. Furthermore, a new training program to be organized by the Force in collaboration with some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Local and International NGOs, and other Human Rights Organizations on core Police Duties, Observant of Human Rights and Handling, Care and Custody of Suspects have been directed by the Inspector General of Police for all Federal SARS people nationwide with immediate effect.

10. A committee of Senior Police officers, Technical Consultants, Human Rights/Civil Society organizations (CSOs) has been setup to check the activities of FSARS under the new arrangement. They are to pay unscheduled visits to FSARS formations across the country with particular attention to States with high complaints index, to assess facilities and situations in these States and give report to the Inspector General of Police on regular basis.

Offa Bank Robbery: Court orders police to suspend bukola Saraki interrogation

An Abuja high court has ordered the Nigerian Police to suspend arrest and questioning of the Senate President Bukola Saraki over Offa Bank robbery.Some arrested suspects of the bank robbery that led to killings of over 30 people in Offa, Kwara State, earlier this year indicted Saraki as their sponsor.The Senate President has been summoned several times by the Nigeria Police Force for interrogation and questioning over the April 5 offa robbery attack.A motion dated July 30 was submitted by 10 layers, requesting the court to restrain the police or their agents from arresting, interrogating, harassing or attempting to detain Mr Saraki or infringe upon what they called his fundamental rights.
“The respondents are directed to stay all further actions related to the suit, pending the determination of the originating motion, which is hereby fixed for hearing on August 16,” the court ruled

The presiding Judge, M. A. Nasir, ordered the police to suspend further action on issues on the suit pending the determination of the substantive matter on August 16.

Police official Jimoh Moshood said in June that the gang leaders “have a direct link” to Saraki, pointing to a picture of one of the five gang leaders wearing a cloth used during the wedding is the Senate President.

The claims came a day after the National Assembly passed a vote of no confidence on the inspector-general of police Ibrahim Idris, whom the Nigerian Senate described last month as an “enemy of democracy, unfit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria.”

On his part, Saraki insisted he had nothing to do with the crime. He said he was a victim of Inspector-General of Police’s plan to frame him up.

“Let it be known that there is no way I could have been associated with armed robbery against my people,” Saraki said.

“When the Offa robbery incident happened, I was the first top public official to pay a visit to the place and right there in the palace of the traditional ruler, I put a call through to this same Mr Ibrahim Idris, the IGP (Inspector General of police), requesting him to make certain specific security arrangements as demanded by the people,” he added.

Moshood insisted that the gang leaders confessed to working for Saraki as “political thugs under the name Youth Liberation Movement a.k.a. ‘Good Boys’.”

THE northern Edo state town of Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo local government area, about two hours drive from the state capital of Benin was thrown into deep mourning yesterday following a bloody banks robbery by dare devil robbers which resulted in the death of 12 persons.

Two banks, Unity Bank and Keystone Bank were robbed by the gun totting hoodlums who laid a siege on the quiet town. The bold move by Makinwa has caused a stir on social media; some praising her beauty and courage while others condemned her nudity.

One commenter criticised her move, saying, “there is nothing to hide anymore. Unleash the other parts while another said “remove your hand from your chest since there’s nothing to hide”.

THE Oyo State Government has stated that it will enforce all legislation in its bid to curb the menace of land grabbing in the state, urging members of the judicial arm of government to adopt the principle of real justice in dealing with the growing menace of land grabbing since the state had on time risen to the occasion by passing legislation to tackle the mischief of land grabbers.

The government further warned that the use thugs, agents, consultants to attack occupants or demolish buildings based on purported court judgment without proper procedure shall be prosecuted under the Real Property Protection law (Anti Grabbers Law) to make sure the menace of land grabbing is finally curbed in the state.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo state, Mr. Oluseun Abimbola, made this known in Ibadan, during the Special Court Session held in honour of late Justice Pius Aderemi, JSC (rtd), adding that a more worrisome dimension was recently introduced by some judgment creditors who under the guise of enforcing recent court judgments of the Supreme court and High Court over expansive parcels of land, introduced the use thugs and brigades to seize possession and cause security threat to people. The ranch promises an “edibles factory” and 20 acres for “master growers” to cultivate their product.

On Monday, January 1, California’s Proposition 64 went into effect, allowing for both the sale and consumption of recreational marijuana.

The bill, which was voted on and passed in November of 2016, allows adults over the age of 21 to purchase marijuana from shops across the state and grow up to six plants in their home. The one thing people cannot do, however, is smoke or consume marijuana in public places, bars or buildings outside their homes.

Unless of course, you’re at Mike Tyson’s new marijuana resort.

According to the Washington Post, Tyson, along with his business partners, have long been eager to jump into the legal weed business, and broke ground on a 40-acre ranch in November. That ranch will soon become a safe haven for both growers and consumers to come together over their shared love of a good blunt.

The resort, The Blast reported, will be located in California City—just a 110-mile drive northeast of Los Angeles, making it the ideal destination for a weekend getaway. It will be run by Tyson Holistic and will be called—what else?—Tyson Ranch.

The ranch will include about 20 acres for marijuana cultivation by what The Blast called “master growers.” It will also offer growers educational opportunities to learn more about their craft at the Tyson Cultivation School.

For the visitors’ side, the ranch will provide guests with amenities like tours of the “edibles factory,” an amphitheater, and areas for “glamping” among the product.

Tyson isn’t the only one who’s excited about the new venture. Jennifer Wood, California City’s mayor, said the ranch will be a “rebirth” for her town at its groundbreaking last fall.

Tyson has been a long-time user of marijuana. Davido, Nigerian Afro-beats artiste, says he’s not hellbent on breaking into the international music market.

The award-winning singer is among those promoting the Afro-beats genre on the global scene.

But Davido said he is only making international moves because he feels a sense of responsibility to promote “the culture”.

“To be honest, me, I’m not into this international stuff but I’m really doing it because I’m one of those people pioneering this movement,” the ‘Fia’ singer said in an interview with Pause.

“I have to put a cape on my back and do it for the culture but I always prefer being at home.”

When asked about African artistes in the diaspora who are trying to connect with the Nigerian audience, Davido said they should move to the country.

“If they’re trying to reach somewhere it’s the best place to be,” he said.

“But it just depends, to be honest. Mr Eazi was in London, then he came back.”

Comparing the African market to the European market, Davido said the vibe back home is bigger because “Africa can do 18,000 people, it’s crazy, but here (Europe) it’s like 8K, 10K.”

A 51-year-old landlord, Bassey Wilson, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly flogging a married woman with a belt.

Wilson, a businessman, who resides at Ahmadiyya, Meiran, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for assault.

The accused allegedly committed the offence on July 7 at his residence, the prosecutor, Sgt Godwin Awase, told the court.

He said that the accused assaulted Mrs Victoria Obioha, his tenant, by flogging her with the belt which resulted in some bruises on her body.

“The complainant washed and spread her husband’s police uniform and belt on a clothesline.

“The accused removed the clothes where the complainant hung them and seized them because there was an argument over where the clothes were spread.

“The complainant ran after him in order to retrieve the uniform and belt before entering his apartment.

Ifedolapo Badmus, a Chief Superintendent of Police and Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 2, has opened up on the outcry against SARS revealing the outcry is overhyped on social media.

While reacting to the alarming number of SARS brutalization reports, in a recent interview with Vanguard, she said: “We are aware that bad news sales faster than good news. People have been feigning SARS attack on the social media. .

I am a Zonal Public Relations Officer of the Force and I have noticed that people deforms information even when there is no confrontation at all. Most people somehow, do this to seek relevance on the social media. .

Even some celebrities are doing it. The issue has spiraled to the other members of the Police Force: when a normal Policeman did anything uncalled for, they tag it SARS. .

This kind of act is sending a negative picture to the international community about Nigerian Police. We don’t have any other country other than Nigeria, and whatever we do reflects on us a people. .

The negative effects rub off on us too as Policemen. When we are outside the country, they see us as corrupt officers due to social media postings. The Lagos State Government on Friday said it will begin the release of dead bodies of victims of the Otedola Bridge tanker explosion to their families for burial on Saturday.

This is after the conclusion of DNA forensic examination conducted by government to ascertain the identities of victims of the tanker explosion which occurred on 28 June, 2018 at the Otedola Bridge, inward Berger area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Twelve people were reportedly dead in the tragedy, out of which 10 burnt beyond recognition were taken for DNA forensic examination.

Commissioners for Health, Dr. Jide Idris at a news conference in Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria disclosed that the DNA Forensic examination had been concluded and that the remains of the deceased would be released to their families for burial tomorrow.

According to him, all recovered victims’ remains were taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, saying that samples of the incident were picked up by the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, LSD & FCfrom LASUTH Forensic Pathologists under secured chain of custody.

“Based on the DNA analysis performed at the LSD and FC, all victims samples were successfully matched to relatives’ samples. Nine bodies have been successfully matched to nine families out of the 11 families that showed up at the LSD&FC. They are now ready to be handed over to the rightful families for necessary burial arrangement.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nigeria goalkeeper Carl Ikeme confirmed his retirement from professional football on Friday following a battle with acute leukaemia.

The England-born player, who was capped 10 times and named as an honorary 24th player in the Nigeria squad at the recent World Cup, revealed last month he was in complete remission from the disease.

“The support has been incredible,” the 32-year-old, who has been with Wolves for his whole career, said in a statement on the club’s website.

“Every day someone has asked me how I am for a whole year. It’s incredible to think people actually care so much that they’ll do fundraisers in my name.”

Cristiano Ronaldo will be fined 3.2 million Euros (3.7 million dollars) and sentenced to 24 months in prison, a sentence he is unlikely to serve, after settling a tax evasion case with Spanish tax authorities, the prosecutor said on Friday.

The 33-year-old is accused of evading 5.7 million euros in taxes. He has denied the allegations.

Ronald o is unlikely to go to prison as Spanish law states a sentence of under two years for a first offence can be served on probation.

The football star will be required to pay the 3.2-million-Euro fine plus the 5.7 million Euros in back taxes, 1 million Euros in accrued interest and 250 Euros-per-day for the 48 months covering the prison sentence.
