Romance / Re: Dating A Stingy Guy by rooney86(m): 8:38pm On Jul 29, 2009
well, some guys are stingy. since his cousins confirmed that, he might be a stingy person anyway.

sometime back, i was dating a lady that was constantly asking for money; i kept giving her until i was almost run down. when my account was almost in red, i had to end the abusive relationship. ( the girl was still insisting she loves me). i tried to be caring but she turned me to a "mugu"

needless to say that i didnt spend a dime my next gf.

They say its simple, just text WIN to 555. ( then they deduct N100).
As far as i'm concerned, its all bullshit and more like a lottery business. (this is definately not a PROMO)
The NCC has been compromised as telecom firms are now into lottery business as well.
the consumer protection agency has also been compromised or its just outright ineffective.

NIGERIANS, Pls let us fight this SCAM.
Our Telco's have not business running a lottery syndicate ( lets leave lottery chua chua for lotto nigeria)
Let them focus on improving their services rather than duping their customers.

Pls come and talk your own.
I am not happy angry

Romance / Re: Facebook Has Ruined My Relationship by rooney86(m): 8:52pm On Jul 22, 2009
well, your guy might just want to be discreet. i personally dont like revealing too much info about myself on facebook.
There are other ways to know if he's committed to you rather than bother over his relationship status on facebook.

naijatoday:

donation to pastor or Imam and donation to the church are two different things. According to the federal law, the donation or the salary to the religious leaders and workers should be taxed.

Are you saying a worker for a non profit organization say red-cross who makes N1,000,000 a year should not be taxed? The only things that should not be taxed is the donation made to red cross to help people.

yeah, i get. tax the pastors/imams but dont tax the donations. but its hard to separate church funds from the pastors fund especially if na him be founder. G.O's no dey get salary for naija oh, all donations na him own.
Politics / Re: Lagos State Government And Religious Leaders Disagree Over Tax by rooney86(m): 8:09pm On Jul 22, 2009
its not ideal paying tax on donations because religious institutions are supposed to be non-profit. However considering the life of opulence most of our religious leaders are living on these donations, they might as well pay tax.

The Lagos State government and the leaders of religious organisations in the state met on Monday to deliberate on the recent move by the state government to enforce taxation laws on religious organisations.

Babatunde Fashola, the Lagos State governor, said the move should not be seen as an attack on religious bodies but a duty that must be performed. "The law is not a creation of the state but a federal law which I have sworn on oath to faithfully implement," he said.

The Executive Chairman of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service, Babatunde Fowler, said the meeting was to clarify the state government's position and to seek the cooperation of religious leaders.

He said the state will not contradict the Personal Income Tax Act which "exempts the income of any ecclesiastical, charitable, or educational institution of a public character from taxation provided the income is not derived from a trade or business carried on by such institutions." This includes schools, companies, and other not-for-profit-oriented businesses owned by churches.

Though many of the religious leaders agreed with the state's directive, there were objections to the demands and it was resolved that a group be set up to identify areas which should not be affected by the implementation of the law.

The state's demands

Specifically, the state wants religious organisations to pay tax on incomes derived from business activities that are carried out in the name of a separate [for profit] entity.

The state also claimed that income from asset acquired in the name of someone associated with a religious organisation is taxable.

Other tax obligations of religious organisations are: deduction of PAYE from the salaries of their officials, including that of the religious leader and deduction of withholding tax from the fee paid to unincorporated entities.

Religious leaders' reactions

The religious leaders collectively agreed with the demands of the state but the inclusion of financial donations, allowances, and gifts given to religious leaders as taxable income was contested by some.

A Moslem cleric, Moshood Fashola, said that donations should not be taxed because the Quran instructs all adherents to share donation and gifts with the needy and less privileged.

He asked, in addition, that subventions, instead of tax deductions, be given to religious organisations to cushion the debt they sometimes incur in social activities.

The Prelate of the Methodist Church, Ola Makinde, said so much is being expended to raise the standard of educational institutions handed over to religious organisations after the forcible take over by the government.

He said the schools were returned in conditions far below what they were before the government took over.

Tardy amendment

Mr. Fashola said some of the provisions of the Personal Income Tax Act, which was last reviewed 16 years ago, are obsolete. He cited the example of the ₦2,500 per annum tax relief prescribed for each child.

"It should be realised that there are no perfect laws anywhere as man himself who drafted the laws is imperfect, there is a need to continue to modify and amend laws," he said.

Mrs. Smith has three daughters who are all getting married within the same month. She tells each one of her daughters to write back about their married life.

To avoid possible embarrassment to their new husbands by openly discussing their love lives, the mother and daughters agree to using newspaper advertisements as a "code" to let the mother know how their love lives are going.

The first one gets married and the second day a telegram arrives with a single message, simply: "MAXWELL COFFEE HOUSE."

Mrs. Smith gets the newspaper and checks the Maxwell Coffee House advertisement, and it says: "Good to the last drop, " So, Mrs. Smith is happy.

Then the second daughter gets married. After a week, there is a postcard that reads: "ROTHMAN'S MATTRESSES." So, Mrs. Smith looks at the Rothman's Mattresses ad, and it says: "FULL SIZE, KING SIZE." And Mrs. Smith is happy.

Then it is the third one's wedding. Mrs. Smith is anxious because two weeks have passed and still no message from the third daughter. Finally, after four weeks, comes a letter with the message: "BRITISH AIRWAYS."

And Mrs. Smith looks in the newspaper for the British Airways ad, but this time she faints. The ad reads: "THREE TIMES A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, BOTH WAYS."
