I’m not quite sure when I started running. All I know was that I was running very fast and Bimpe was running in front of me, her feet throwing sand and dirt in the air, her shoes gone. Arnold was running ahead of us, throwing an occasional fearful glance behind him at us and urging us to run faster. Nobody said anything, our feet did the talking. We ran through the trees into a field and then into the bushes. I dared not turn back but I kept on straining with my ears to hear that awful hissing sound, imagining the snake behind me in hot pursuit and feeling that at any moment I would be snapped up in the air and gulped down the huge snake’s throat just like Dare. We must have been running for a long time before I finally collapsed from sheer exhaustion in a heap on the ground behind some bushes. I started crying profusely and Sola came and joined me. Mrs. Alabi and the other two boys ran past us and disappeared into the bushes along with Arnold and Bimpe. ................................ “My names are Arnold Tayo Adedeji, but you will call me Senior Tayo until I declare otherwise, you hear?” “Yes Senior!” James saluted. We all burst into laughter, except Mrs. Alabi. She was looking at us as if we had all gone mad. “How can you people be joking at a time like this?” She gasped. “Can’t you see how serious our situation is?!” James turned to her. “Ma, I wasn’t joking oh, it’s just labour prefect I used to call him. Many of us call him like that without knowing his full name.” “Some people even call me gorilla sef!” Arnold said, and I blushed deeply as the others burst into another round of laughter and Mrs. Alabi finally smiled. Arnold nodded. “Take it easy Ma. Let us laugh now; it will make the journey easier.” She nodded and we followed Arnold as he set down the bush path. “Arnold’s name is Tayo?” Bimpe said, limping beside me. “I never knew either. I think I even prefer Tayo to Arnold.” “I didn’t know you preferred anyone.” Sola chuckled mischievously. “Abeg your wahala is too much, leave me jo.” I said and she laughed. “Senior Tayo don’t leave us behind oh!” I called to Arnold who turned around with a smile and slowed his steps. ****************** |
Arnold stood up and dusted his hands and grabbing a huge root of the tree, hoisted himself up. |

Simply put: There are 5types of female circumcision. 1. Marking or cutting a piece of the clit0ris. This has no side effects and the woman can still have orgasms. 2. Cutting off the entire clit0ris. Orgasm is more difficult but still possible. Minimal side effects. 3. Cutting off the labia minora or 'inner lips'. Scarification marks lead to urination issues and tears during childbirth. 4. Cutting off the labia majora or 'outer lips'. Realise that this means the inner lips and clit0ris are cut off as well. The female can bleed to death. Healing will bring scars making sex, urinating, and childbirth difficult. Childbirth is almost impossible and the woman will be advised to do C/S. If she goes the normal way she should expect serious tears in her privates. 5. Cutting off the introitus or entrance to the privates. This includes the whole privates plus some extra skin from both sides. This is the worst. The woman can bleed to death. Sex is mostly painful. Urination can be severely complicated. Childbirth through the vagina is totally out of the question. No sane doctor will allow it. Apart from this, the act itself can lead to HIV transmission from using shared blades, tetanus, infection and a very nasty thing commonly seen in the north called vvf(the woman leaks urine continuously) Female circumsicion is one cultural practice that has been successfully abolished in Nigeria. I use the word successfully because although one or two people might still practice it, it is very vary rare compared to how it was in the past. |
I woke up to bright sunlight and the smell of burnt out firewood. I turned and twisted around, thinking I was in my house on my own bed. wondering why my bed was so hard and my alarm clock wasn’t ringing. And who had opened the window blinds? I shielded my eyes from the sunlight and tried to go back to sleep when I heard a deep voice “Temi, wake up.” What was Ayo doing in my room? I groggily sat up and rubbed my eyes. It cleared to reveal Dare staring down at me and smiling. Dare! “Hope you slept well.” He said, smiling mischeviously. Suddenly I realized where I was. The events of last night rushed back in a flash and I jumped to my feet. I staggered back and nearly fell over Sola who was still sleeping. “Ah, ah, why are you marching me now?” she complained as she sat up. Then she saw Dare. She stood up quickly in front of me and faced him. “Yes, what is it?” She asked in a very menacing tone. Dare’s smile vanished immediately. “You told her?” I shook my head vigorously and Sola held my shoulder. “She didn’t tell me anything but you can be sure I will get it out of her sooner or later and God help you if you did anything nasty to my friend! Now go before I start shouting! Move!” “Temi, I’m sorry about last night. Honestly I don’t know what came over me…” Dare pleaded but Sola was having none of it. “Arnold! Mr. Abel!” She shouted and Dare walked quickly away. “What was all that about?” Bimpe asked, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. “Nothing.” Sola said. “Get up, everybody is awake already.” We looked around at our little camp. The fire had completely died out and most people were already up and about. Mr. Abel was near the edge of the pit along with some other teachers. They were discussing among themselves, probably on how we should proceed. Arnold and the others prefects were nowhere to be seen. “They went to get some more fruits so we can eat before continuing.” One of the boys that was passing by said when we asked him. We washed our hands and faces with some of the remaining sachet water and soon Arnold and his team were back. He carried a bag of fruits on his broad gorilla like shoulders and smiled at us as he passed by. Soon they had shared the food and we all ate quickly as Mr. Abel described the day’s journey to us. “The bad news is that mobile network hasn’t returned, so there is no way of letting our families know we are all right. The good news is that we’ll soon be reunited with them. It’s just for us to cross this road. The bushes and trees aren’t so much on the other side and I will be happier knowing that those of you who want to go towards the market will be doing so in broad daylight. The rest of us will go the other way. We are going to use those petrol tankers there. We will climb down one of them, move further down, and then climb up another one. Very simple, no bridge walking in this one.” Some people laughed and Mr. Abel smiled. “You have all been very brave to come on this small adventure with me and I am proud of you all. It will soon be over and we can gist and laugh about all this in class tomorrow. I’m joking and joking!” he laughed as there was an immediate loud protest from the group. “I don’t think school will resume for a while, so you guys make sure you read at home. I will be communicating with all of you as soon as network returns.” There was clapping and cheering as we all got ready to cross the pit. Mr. Abel led the way to the tanker and we all followed behind. The tanker was turned on its side, haven fallen into the pit probably when it opened up. The other tanker was a little further off. Mr. Abel climbed the body of the tanker then carefully walked down to the bottom. He was followed by the teachers and then the prefects and the rest of us. It was strange being inside the crevise, as if we were inside the Red sea when Moses parted it only that the two sides of the wall were rock and stones and dirt instead of water and there were wrecked vehicles everywhere instead of pharaoh’s chariots. We walked along this strange landscape for a while till we got to the second tanker. “Where are all the people?” Sola asked as we passed through the wreckages. “Will you stop asking that for goodness sake?” I replied, glaring at her. “Probably they were helped out when the earthquake subsided. “Yes, but this kind of disaster, there must have been many injuries right? Maybe some people even died?” “Yes, and so? What’s your problem?” I asked “Where’s the blood?” she asked. “There should be blood somewhere, but everywhere is clean. The earthquake happened a few hours before we reached here, there should be one or two people going through the wreckage, trying to collect their things that they left. There should actually be a small crowd, but we haven’t seen anybody since we got here! This is a highway, where are the ambulances, the towing vans, the villagers? Where are the people?” “Maybe rapture happened when the earthquake took place.” Bimpe said. She looked so serious I had to laugh. “Rapture? And I didn’t go?” I snorted. “It’s a lie jo. Are you saying there is no righteous person among us? At least someone in our group would have disappeared if it was rapture na!” “Remember those airplanes that went missing on television before this thing happened…” Bimpe said. “Bimpe that was an entirely different matter. You are getting as bad as Sola!” I replied. She grimaced and we all laughed. Sola looked at me, this was the third time she was doing so in a sneaky sort of way since we entered the crevice. I knew what she was looking out for but I just wasn’t emotionally ready to deal with it yet. I was looking for any opportunity to get Dare out of my mind and this conversation, any conversation, was welcome. But she kept on glancing my way until I became exasperated. “Sola I’m fine.” I said quietly when Bimpe moved a little out of earshot. “Dare didn’t touch you did he?” She asked, sounding very disturbed. “If he did then we should report to Mr. Abel. I think we should even get your father involved…if…you know…” “He didn’t rape me, okay?” I shot at her. “You guys came just in time. I really don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want anybody to know about it, it would be too embarrassing. Let’s just forget anything ever happened okay? I won’t go near him again.” Sola kept quiet and we continued our walk. Soon we reached the other tanker. It slanted upwards and out of the pit. As usual, Mr. Abel went first, climbing up the tanker carefully. He slipped and almost fell once but regained his footing. It wasn’t a particularly difficult climb except for the smoothness of the sides of the tanker and soon he was climbing out on the other side of the road. “Alright, very easy as you can see, next person up please.” The next person had started climbing up when we heard a low rumble and the ground beneath us began to shake! Another earthquake! There was sudden pandemonium as everybody struggled to climb up the tanker at the same time. Mr. Abel tried calming them down’ pleading for us to come one at a time. Arnold and Dare were one of the first to climb up the trailer and then they turned and started helping others. Suddenly there was another huge noise and Mr. Abel looked up to see what might be causing it. When he looked down at us again his eyes were wide open with fear. “Climb! Everybody climb!” We needed no extra prompting. I joined Sola and Bimpe in pushing our way to the tanker and we started to climb. The loud noise drew closer and the ground trembled again and Mr. Abel urged us to move faster. Now there was a cracking noise, like the sound of many trees falling, and I looked back and saw that the walls of our pit were collapsing. I struggled to climb as fast as I could and reached out to Arnold who pulled me out. Sola and Bimpe were next. Soon we were all out and we scrambled from the edge as the pit we had just walked through caved in. We were finally on the other side of the road! Home had never seemed as close as it did then. The ground continued to shake but not as badly as before. Mr. Abel suggested we all sit down and wait until it passed. “Just a minor earthquake unlike the first one,” He said. "Nothing to be afraid of”. As if on cue, as if some strange god were mocking Mr. Abel, the ground right in front of us tore open with a thunderous sound. We all started screaming and shouting and I joined Bimpe and Sola in running into the opposite bush. We found a large tree and started climbing it instantly. We could hear Mr. Abel’s voice above the roaring noise of the earth moving around us. “No! No! Don’t climb the trees! It’s more dangerous there! All of you come down and lie flat on the ground!” Ignoring the voice, completely panic stricken, I climbed higher, urging Bimpe who was in front of me to move. Sola had climbed up another tree and was screaming something at us. Without looking back down, I urged Bimpe upward and finally settled on a branch big enough to hold my weight. The tree swayed dangerously and I held on tight, hearing the warning of my geography teacher but too panic stricken to obey. I looked around and saw the others who had climbed up. Sola, Bimpe, myself, two other boys and a female teacher. The noise gradually reduced and the horrible movement stopped. Mr Abel and Arnold stood up from the ground where they had been lying with the others and rushed to the trees. “If those trees fall down, you will all break your necks!” Mr. Abel shouted. “Come down at once!” “Temi come down.” Arnold said. “Come down so Bimpe can come down too. It’s safer down here, don’t worry.” “I can’t!” I screamed. “I’m frightened!” “Sir, don’t worry, let me go up and help them down.” Arnold said. Mr. Abel Protested but Arnold was already climbing. Some of the other boys who were lying on the ground previously had gotten to their feet and come under the trees to watch the drama. “Arnold, this your babe go kill you o! Come down!” One of them said and the others laughed. I looked around and saw Dare watching from a distance. He caught my gaze and then looked away. Arnold slipped and fell off the tree and there was an uproar of laughter as he landed on his bottom. “How did they climb up sef?” “You know fear is a powerful motivator!” Arnold didn't answer them. Instead he stood up and dusted his hands and grabbing a huge root of the tree, hoisted himself up once again. That move saved his life. To be continued |
DAY 3: EVERYTHING BREAKS DOWN I had fallen into a fitful sleep when we were all awakened around 2am in the morning by wild screaming from one of the girls who had been sleeping near the fire. We all jumped to our feet, some people running into the bush in fright while others ran towards the screaming to see if we could help. I was among the latter group though I went mostly out of curiosity. It was Shade, the girl that had been helped across the bridge like I was. Those around her kept shaking her to stop her from screaming but it wasn't working. Eventually Mr. Abel came and splashed some water on her face and she stopped abruptly. One of her friends hugged her tight as she sat down, her hands folded across her chest, rocking gently from side to side. “Snakes.” She kept on repeating. “Big snakes.” “It’s alright, everyone go back to sleep.” Mr. Abel said, dispersing the crowd. “She just had a bad dream that’s all.” The crowd dispersed as people grumbled back to their make-shift beds. I was looking at shade and saw the way she shivered violently and I had a feeling it was more than just the cold from the water splashed on her. A vague memory of what had happened to me when I nearly fell off the bridge flashed across my mind and I remembered the horrible things I thought I had seen moving in the shadows of the crevice. I knelt beside her as soon as Mr. Abel and the others were out of earshot. “Shade, were people riding on the snakes?” She looked at me with fear in her eyes and nodded vigorously. “Yes! Did you see it too?” I didn’t reply but left her and went back to where Bimpe and Sola were sitting. They hadn’t budged at all from their ‘bed’. “What was that about?” Bimpe asked. “She screamed like she was being strangled.” “We heard Mr. Abel say she had a bad dream?” Sola said. I sat down beside them. They knew I wanted to say something and drew closer in anticipation. “You remember when I was on that bridge, when I almost fell and I was holding on to the side?, I thought I saw something, deep down in the crevice…” I began and looked at their faces. “Continue. What was it?” Bimpe asked. “Well, I thought I saw very big snakes, ridden by men, like horses.” I said. “I know, it sounds strange, but I swear I thought I saw something like that. There were many of them, moving along the walls, in and out of it, and when I screamed they moved in my direction as if drawn by the noise.” “Okay.” Sola said. “It was dark and the crevice was very very deep. There was no way you could have seen anything like that. Probably your mind was playing tricks on you because of the fear you were feeling at the time.” “Yes, but…Shade said she saw the same thing when she was dragged off the bridge, remember? And now the nightmare she had was of the same big snakes with people riding on top.” “Shade probably watches too many horror movies! I know you watch such things too, your imaginations must have run wild! It was probably deep roots in the ground that you saw and thought you were seeing snakes.” Sola said. “Deep roots from which trees, Sola?” I asked apprehensively. “Roots don’t go that deep, do they?” “We don’t know do we?” She said. “Nobody has dug deep enough into the earth to know what goes on down there, I’m sure even those that sink boreholes and wells haven’t gone as deep as what we saw yesterday. Who knows what happens underneath us?” “Exactly my point, Sola!” I said. “Nobody knows what happens deep deep down beneath us! What if…” “Temi, don’t let your imagination run away with you.” Sola said. “It will soon be morning and when everywhere is bright and you are back home you will see how silly this thing you are saying sounds.” She smiled and went back to sleep. Bimpe had already covered herself with the blanket. I wrapped Arnold’s sweater tighter around me and lay back down, thinking that I would never go to sleep again. |

I struggled to breathe as he carried me deeper and deeper into the bush until we got to a very secluded spot. Without letting go of my throat he used his free hand to grope at my breasts, squeezing them till they hurt. He pushed me to a tree and pressed himself against me, his body so hot it seemed like he was having a fever, and something hard between his legs was prodding my tummy. I was still struggling for breath and felt my strength leaving me. I bucked as my knees gave way but he held me up with his body and started feeling for my groin, putting his hand up my skirt. As he touched me down there I panicked and felt renewed energy and thrashed about but he just increased his grip on my throat and soon my arms and feet became too heavy for me to move. I was so weak that even if he had let go of my throat I wouldn’t have been able to scream. I felt him move his hand under my dress again and feel my underwear. His breathing increased as his hands explored further and with a sudden ferocity he tore off my pant. My head began to swim again as I struggled to give my brain air and I thought I was going to faint. I closed my eyes, waiting for it all to be over… Then I heard Bimpe’s familiar shrill voice. “Temi! TEMI! Where are you?” Then Sola, “Maybe she’s em…using the toilet, Arnold wait here let’s go that way, I thought I saw some movement there.” Suddenly Dare’s weight was off me. He put his hand over my mouth and squeezed extra hard on my neck until I almost passed out. He brought his head near me and I heard him whisper: “Tell anybody about this and I swear I will kill you.” Then the terrible pressure around my throat was gone as he let go of me and disappeared into the bush. I collapsed at the foot of the tree, trying to catch my breath and crying at the same time. It was Bimpe who found me first. She gasped as she saw me crumpled on the ground and ran to my side. “Temi! Temi what happened? Temi please talk to me, is it what I did? I’m so sorry please!” and she started crying as well. Sola came onto the scene and after looking at both of us for some time she came forward and helped lift me to my feet. She looked into my sobbing face, studying me quietly. “What happened Temi?” She finally asked. My throat hurt and my back ached. I could barely speak and was dying for a cup of water, my mouth was so dry. I motioned for her to carry me out of that place ad together they brought me towards the road where Arnold was waiting. As soon as he saw me he ran forward. “What’s going on? Is she hurt? What happened?” He asked, very alarmed. Sola said nothing but collected a sachet of water from Arnold’s hand and gave to me to drink. I took it thankfully and drank, allowing the cool water flow down my burning oesophagus to my heaving chest. My body was shaking uncontrollably and Bimpe kept on rubbing my back as if she thought I was catching cold. Sola’s eyes were full of questions but I said nothing. They were silent as I continued to drink, except for Bimpe who was still crying quietly beside me. Finally I felt better and more composed. I gave the water back to Sola with a smile. “Thanks.” I said hoarsely. “What are you doing here?” “I came back to give you some water and a sweater I saw in one of the cars in case you got cold at night.” Arnold replied. “Sola and Bimpe said you had moved over here but when I came I didn’t see you, only this blanket on the ground. I was worried you entered back into the forest alone so I went to get them to help me look for you.” Arnold had arrived just in time. If he had not come looking for me by now I would have been… “So what happened to you?” Arnold asked. “You look terrible.” They all stared at me, waiting for an explanation. I opened my mouth to say something “Tell any body about this and I swear I’ll kill you” I heard the threatening voice again as if Dare had just whispered in my ear “I was overwhelmed by everything that happened today,” I said. “You know, the earthquakes and crossing the bridge, the idea that I won’t sleep in my own bed tonight, and then arguing with my best friends…so I went into the forest to cry, where no one would see me.” I looked down as I spoke, I couldn’t look them in the eye as I lied as best as I could. Biola gave a loud sob and hugged me so tightly I grimaced in pain. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry for what I did, please will you forgive me? Who will I talk to again if not you? Please forgive me Temi!” “Let her go, you are hurting her.” Sola said, pulling Bimpe off me. “It’s alright, Bimpe” I said. “I was angry. I didn’t mean what I said.” “Why don’t you come and stay with them by the fire?” Arnold suggested. “It’s better for you ladies to stay where you can easily be seen. Some of us prefects and teachers are taking turns to do night vigil, so there’s no need to be scared.” He got up to go. “Arnold,” I called after him. He looked back at me. “Please don’t abandon us again.” I said. He grinned then. He walked back to me and sneered. “You are looking for bodyguard for you and your prince, abi?” I shivered. “He is not my prince. I don’t want us to talk about him ever again.” Arnold raised an eyebrow but decided not to pursue the matter further. He helped carry the blanket Dare had brought for me although I told him I didn’t want it anymore but he insisted on bringing it along and escorted us back to the fire. He waited until I had settled in with Sola and Bimpe then left. I looked fearfully around the group. There was no sign of Dare. Everybody else was either sleeping or talking in hushed tones. Bimpe made me drink some me and eat some roasted plantain before she yawned widey and lay down to sleep. Sola sat beside me for a while. She looked very uncomfortable and I looked away from her, trying to put my mind on something else. “Do you want to talk about it?” she asked suddenly. I stiffened. “Talk about what?” She was quiet for a moment then stuck her hand behind her back and brought out something I couldn’t immediately recognize. “I saw this near the tree where we picked you up.” I squinted in the glowing light and finally saw what it was. My torn underwear. “Throw that thing away.” I whispered. “But, what if you need it for…” “Get rid of it!” I trembled, my heart full of terror and disgust. She nodded and wrapped it in a piece of paper she saw on the ground and casually threw it into the fire. “Did he?”she asked. “No!” I replied and lay down backing her. “And I don’t want to talk about it.” I heard her sigh then felt her hand on my back as she patted me. “I’m here whenever you are ready.” She said. And then all was quiet. Sola spread the blanket so it covered all three of us.The blanket helped to protect my exposed body from the mosquitoes but after a while I couldn't bear touching it anymore, not after knowing it was Dare that brought it for me. I shrugged it off and used a plantain leaf to drive away the mosquitoes till I slept off. |
I must have been sitting by myself for almost half an hour when Dare approached me carrying a blanket. I had gone to sit somewhere away from the others where I could be alone. I was so engrossed in thinking about what had just happened, the whole exchange with Arnold and Bimpe, that I didn’t notice Dare was approaching until he was right next to me. I almost jumped out of my skin when he touched me on the arm. “Whoa. Take it easy, it’s only me!” He said, smiling that his gorgeous smile that could turn any girl’s knees to water. I heaved a sigh of relief and gasped in surprise as he handed a blanket to me. “Where did you get this?” I exclaimed, admiring the softness and sweet scent coming off of it. “In one of the cars,” Her replied, sitting down beside me. “ Apparently the people that left were in a big hurr because they didn’t carry their luggage with them. We've found documents, travelling bags with clothes, some foodstuff and roadside snacks…” “Any money?” I asked He looked at me and laughed. “No, no money, or maybe someone has found money and is keeping it to himself I don’t know. Why are you asking?” “Because if no money is found its possible that people were here before us, maybe robbers, and took the money and other valuables and left.” I replied. “You have a point.” He said. “Very intelligent observation. I told you you were smart.” I blushed. I didn’t think the observation was that smart. But I was very grateful for the blanket. It beat sleeping on plantain leaves anyday. “Thank you for looking out for me, Dare.” I said, looking at my feet shyly. “You have been so kind.” “Its not a problem, seriously. I feel honoured to have been of assistance to a pretty damsel like yourself.” He replied. “You make me want to do kind things.” He edged closer and I suddenly felt very hot. I felt his skin against mine as we sat close together and for a moment even the mosquitoes seemed to cease their constant bombardment. The night lost its repressiveness and took on a romantic feel as I felt his hand draw lines down my arm. The feeling was electrical, in a goo sort of way. He cupped my face in his hands and stared into my eyes as I looked up at him. Flustered, I stood up quickly. “Let me arrange the blanket here.” I said, using my feet to clear away stones and debris from the side of the road that was to be my makeshift bed. He got up and moved away, watching me work and smiling. I cleared the area, found some plantain leaves to line the road so it wouldn’t be too hard, then spread the blanket on top of everything. It looked a little lumpy but other than that it was nice and far more comfortable to lie on than I had even imagined. I took off my shoes and sat down at one side of the spread blanket. Dare, taking my cue, sat down beside me once again. I honestly can’t remember what we talked about after that. All I remember was his skin rubbing against mine, his hands holding my shoulder and then my hands and then our fingers intertwining. His voice was like that of an angel, soft and deep and very mature. I had been approached by boys before for a relationship and I had scorned all of them, the most annoying being Arnold who had not even been brave enough to say what he wanted from me; but none of the boys had made me feel special the way Dare did. He talked to me like he wanted to take care of me, to watch out for me. I forgot all about my annoying encounter with Arnold and my friends and slowly melted into his arms as the night wore on. I must have fallen asleep in his arms when I felt something brush against my cheek. It was soft and cool and for a moment I thought a butterfly had flown past my face. Then the feeling again, this time more firm, more purposeful. I woke with a start and saw that I had been resting my head on Dare’s shoulder. I was about to go back to sleep when Dare bent his head down and kissed me on my cheeks. Okay so I had never been kissed anywhere before, not even on my hand in a mock play, so I was pretty much blown away. I froze, not knowing how to respond, what to say or do. My heart started beating very fast as I started visualizing various outcomes in my mind. What if he gave me a real kiss? Should I let him? Or should I play hard to get? I quickly threw the latter thought out of my mind, There was no way I was going to resist Dare, the man of my dreams on such a romantic night like this one! He felt my subtle movement and knew I was awake. He kissed my cheek a second time and it was like those butterflies in my stomach again. I had never been so excited in my life. I felt his hand leave my shoulder and I half expected to feel it on my chin as he drew my mouth to his and our lips lock in magical embrace. I imagined what it would feel like to be kissed for the very first time, under the night sky. It was almost like a scene from one of the romantic novels I had read. And then I felt his hand, but not where I was expecting. It came down to my chest and rested gently on my breast. Instantly the magic disappeared and the night became cold again. I stayed still not knowing what to do next. Unfortunately, Dare had no such confusion. He slid his hand further down until his fingers touched my nipple and then he gently squeezed. I pushed his hand off and shifted away from him. “Dare, what are you doing?” I asked. I didn’t know what else to say. I was in shock. “I’m sorry, did I hurt you?” He asked , his voice full of concern. I looked into his eyes and for a moment I wanted to drown inside them he looked so concerned. I felt foolish and childlike for behaving the way I had. After all, Dare was more matured than I was, and was probably trying to treat me like the big girl he thought I was. “I’m sorry. I was just-surprised, that’s all.” I replied. He held out his hand and I took it and he drew me back to himself. I grinned gamely but felt immediately uncomfortable when his hands found their way to my breasts again. He pressed them gently and then more firmly. I decided I didn’t like it and didn’t wanted to be treated like a big girl anymore. “What’s the matter now?” Dare asked as I moved away from him again. “Nothing.” I said. “I’m just not…I don’t feel this is right.” “Do you want to be my girlfriend?” He demanded quietly. “You know I do.” I breathed. “But you didn’t answer me the first time.” He replied. “Maybe you think I’m disturbing you…” “NO!” I cried. “No, I don’t think you are disturbing me. I like you, I like you a lot, Dare.” I added shyly. “Good. Because I like you too. And this is what boyfriends and girlfriends do. This is how they show they like each other.” He finished. “It is?” I asked quietly. “I mean, okay, but…I don’t know how far…I haven't...” “Wait o , Temi, are you a virgin?” He asked a little too loudly. Well of course I was and I had never been ashamed of it before. Not before that night anyway. But at that moment, the way he said it, I felt like the earth should open up and swallow me in another earthquake. I looked around quickly but most people were out of earshot or asleep. I felt so embarrassed I didn’t know what to think. Where were Sola and Bimpe? Dare saw the way I was fidgeting and stifled a laugh. It was the most cruel thing he had done all day. He suddenly seemed like a monster to me, a selfish beast intent on having his way with me. I didn’t know if I was over-reacting but I suddenly became very angry once more. I got to my feet and he followed suit. “Please leave.” I said. “Come on, take it easy Temi. I didn’t mean to tease you.” He said as he approached me. “Let me teach you…” “I don’t want you to teach me anything!” I replied. “Please go.” “Come on. There’s no big deal in it.” He replied, coming closer. “I like you. Okay forget that. I love you. I’ve been in love with you for a long time. I want to take care of you. As my girlfriend you will not be punished in that school again even when I pass out as headboy. I’ll maker sure you are well taken care of.” He held my arms and drew me back to himself. “You will be able to come as late as you want, no prefect will dare close the gate on you. Also you know my dad is rich and I’ll be travelling to the U.S next month. I’ll buy you whatever you want and maybe on my next travel I can even ask dad wether you can come along.” He kissed me on my forehead. It felt wet and hot. “Just give me this chance with you tonight and all these will be yours. Let me show you how I love you…” He was pressing me to him again and I felt his hands go round my buttocks as he drew my hips to his. I felt a swimming sensation in my head, it wasn’t pleasant at all. A part of me wanted all he had promised me but another part was just screaming to be let go, the other part that knew this wasn’t right. He grabbed my bum again and I stepped back and dealt a slap across his face, causing him to stagger backwards. It was so sudden even I was shocked. I was even further shocked when Dare viciously grabbed my arms and pulled me to himself. I opened my mouth to scream but he grabbed my neck and squeezed so hard the scream died in my throat. The strength that coursed through him was frightening. He half dragged half carried me from the road into the bush, and to my dismay nobody seemed to notice we had gone. |
