aboyaji: Next slide
A dark complexioned man in his late 50's and a lady in her early 40's were seen rushing into the large awning which was about 18ft wide and 9ft tall.
"Good evening, brother." The dark complexioned man said and kept stamping his feet on the floor to shake off the water on his trousers and shoes. The woman was too busy cuddling unto her hand bag which was too precious at the moment. I could see her bring out her mini umbrella from the precious bag, unlocking the strap holding it together and engaging the eject shooter. In no time, a rose flowered blue umbrella was unveiled. She hoisted it maybe to juxtapose its strength with the pressure of the rain. It dawned on her she was better off under the awning than under her umbrella.
The sound coming from the Mart had me nodding throughout my interim stay in front of the Mart. Lionel Richie's STUCK ON YOU was on play when I saw this sister walking with an umbrella. I got interested of the new development that surfaced, of course I wasn't going to sit there forever. But I got withdrawn when I squinted and realized they were a couple of which there was no other room left for me. I sat down and bowed my head in disappointment.
I waited for a while till it started drizzling so I made my way into the tarred road. The older woman had picked up her umbrella yet again and headed for the road.
No longer sooner have had I covered a distance than I met this the sister that had passed previously walking slowly, but now alone. Probably, the other person had taken his leave. so I came to the realization that she was being of help to him. so I thought.
The weather had gotten darker left save for the beams of light coming from the headlamps of cars and other commuters and the noises emanating from honking horns which kept the road very busy and audible.
I was already drenched to my feet, so I paid less attention to the splashes of dirty, murky flood the road users poured on me. The beam coming from behind shone on us and I was able to see the color of her dress - A dark blue short- sleeved gown. But in the light of my findings, I could vaguely make out her face at the moment. The uncomfortable situation we were all in had dissuaded me from seeing her face and there was no ray of light from the front end as well. I approached and asked if I could join her and the following conversation ensued :
"Hello, can I join you " I politely asked.
She raised her head, now looking at a 6.2ft young man asking for help.
"Yes. Yes you can". she affirmed.
I joined immediately and she shifted to the right for more accommodation. Droplets of rain from the umbrella was still hitting on my left shoulder which made me squeeze my arm and body closely.
We'd ve walked a few feet then I decided to proffer a better solution of comfort by asking her to let me hold the umbrella since I'm I was taller and would hold it more comfortably. She declined and insisted on holding it still.
"it seems this girl doesn't know her exact height" I said thought to myself and took my time scrutinizing her and as well while taking a mental calculation of her actual height.
"4.8 or 5ft highest, she can't exceed that ". I concluded inwardly.
"OK, you can hold it. I think you're in the right position since you're taller". she finally gave up.
"Now, you're right on track and back to your 4G LTE network( )" I thought and grabbed the handle of the umbrella.
A long, yet short silence was observed as we embarked on this rain-induced meeting. Then, I broke the silence.
"Hey, where are you coming back from and where are you headed" I asked.
"church, and I'm going home". she retorted.
"OK, won't you win a soul tonight "? I asked, trying to indulge her in a lengthy conversation.
She let out a loud laughter as the question came in abruptly. I could guess from her countenance, she was a bit perturbed. Notwithstanding, she shook it off.
"Sorry oh, I forgot myself. what would you want me to talk on, and where do you think is your area of concentration that requires clarification"? She asked and Her cheek grew bigger as the question came while her face lit up more from the laughter she just had.
"Anywhere. just start anywhere". I said .
"Alright". She said. I was taken on a lengthy journey of Gospel which encompassed all angles I've heard repeatedly in the church and on TV and on the streets too. What got me flummoxed was the influx of biblical knowledge permeating every context of hers which had me engrossed for as long as I could remember. |

aboyaji: THE RAIN
( a short story by ucmacanthony)
"...can I share how I met this lovely sister here"? I said, pointing at the direction where she was seated.
"Yes! ". The congregation echoed.
I could see some members of the church nodding in the affirmative while others were just indifferent.
"Please, sister, may you join me on the podium "?. I requested.
The Lady on a black skirt and blouse rose to her feet and made a headway in my direction. She reached and turned to a 180° , now facing the crowd while their eyes were all fixated on her.
Holding the microphone firmly on my right hand and reserving the left hand for gesticulation, I began...
"I met this sister on a fateful Wednesday night between the hours of 7 and 8pm while I was on my way home from Trans Amadi. I had to go there from my residence on foot".
I could notice the astonishment building up in the eyes of the congregation as they raised their eyebrows in amazement. Some readjusted their seats while looking on each other's eyes.
"Not that I only went on foot, I was actually coming back on foot too". I continued.
"In one or two occasions, I managed to climb into the back of moving lorries that were heading my way in the long trekking. I quickly jumped down and got on another as soon as the lorries diverted into a different direction".
While on the road, the cloud had clustered together and had become more darker this time. Condensation had taken place in the atmosphere, hence the cold weather. There's been an intermittent rumbling in the Sky and the express road leading to the shell company located along Okpulor road in etche Lga had been overwhelmed by gusts of wind.
In a bid to make ends meet, Bikers were seen jostling and struggling to get passengers on their bikes to be conveyed to their respective homes just along the shell junction. The number of taxis had reduced to a certain amount being that there are more passengers coming back home than those going out at this time of the evening.
I delved into my pocket to get my phone. Looking at the screen, the time said "7:16pm.There was a drop of liquid substance on my device which I had no knowledge of its source. Looking up, it hit directly on my eyelid. I quickly returned the phone back to where I got it from as I walked past the commuters.
"it's really going to rain for sure" I said to myself.
I walked briskly along the road as the droplets came more than expected. I really couldn't fathom the ambiguity of the challenges I was facing; whether it's the impending rainfall or the odoriferous stench from the pile of dirt littered along the right wing of the road which had successfully found its way into my nasal cavity. I grimaced as the odour wafted now leaving me with no other option but to stifle my breath for the next 30 seconds as I increased my pace.
The speed bumps which had contributed to sanity restoration to the road users had given way as it wore from the middle which made bikers to speed uncontrollably. An oncoming biker had paid less attention to the young boys jaywalking as he zoomed at a high acceleration hitting his throttle presumably at 60mph unconscious of the speed bumps, he applied an abrupt brake and swerved over the bumps involuntarily and the boys rushed to the side of the road.
Jim Jam Super Mart was some metres away from me. I murmured some prayers in my heart to reach it in time as I'm partly drenched. It had started raining heavily before I scurried to the Mart. The awning built in front of the mart for displaying items was now my saving grace. I ran into it and heaved a heavy sigh. I brought out my phone once again to check how safe it's been under the downpour. Alas! it was unscathed. No single droplet on its plastic body.
A plastic back chair was idling just before the entrance to the Mart. The staff of the Mart were all indoors already entertaining themselves with the cool blues compilation in their laptop which gave a nice rendition that rebounded on the glass doors and windows. I was able to make out the genre and artist of the music on play as I eavesdropped from the door.
"SPEECHLESS. Oh, what a sooting sound by Mj"! I said as I checked on the staff.
The cold was already lurking and I sat comfortably on the chair albeit shaky legs, waiting for the rain to calm down a bit before I continue and finally head home because of my allergies for rain of which could make me prone to cold - Pneumonia.
Judging from the pressure it was raining, I don't think it's going to calm down anytime soon. I checked the time and it's already rounding toward 8. Hello Macanthony. So you want to be a writer? Money no too dey inside oh Seriously though, congratulations on your debut. Writing is a passion, it is something that is uncontrollable, the urge to put down words to pen and paper and make a story. It can really be exhilarating and frustrating at the same time. Your write-up here is good. I can imagine you have the story already in your head. Your use of English is better than most and your spellings are no point. However, you have to watch your tenses. Keep to past tense if that is what you want to do or present tense. Oscillating between them makes things look kind of clumsy. Some of the words are not appropriate like "Looking on each others eyes". Did you mean "looking at each others eyes"? Or better yet "stealing glances at each other"? "Looking at each other in amazement"? etc. The ending of this first installment seems rushed. Lie you knew the ending already and were in a hurry to get there. That all I have for now, let me get back t the story. |

aboyaji: Hello, Nairaland literature section.
This is my first time putting down a written story aside the diary I made since 2014. I may not be a good and perfect writer, but I know that a day begins a STORY. This story here.
I've read a number of interesting stories here (Nairaland) and outside this ecosystem.
I have a list of guys that turned me on with their writing prowess. I admire them a lot. They are;
Royver - I'm addicted to this fellow here. I'm actually obsessed with him and his stories. I'm still reading The story he wrote since 2013 or so ( I see things others do not see) till today. Over and over.
Divepen1 - The Oga kpatakpata of all the writers. the general Overseer
Slickest - the weird and scary writer.
Audrey Timms.......
Theblessesman Darousmart - he knows himself.
Classcaptain - The funny writer
Slap1 - I read your short story and wanted to destroy mine. Yours motivated me.
I can't name all the good writers here because I can't remember all. Sometimes, I can't remember my own name sef.
And all the Bigwigs in here. Salud!!!

Literature › Re: 5 Odd Places To Get Writing Ideas by Royver(m): 7:17pm On Jul 27, 2019 |
gracile: Hello y’all! It's been a minute and I've really missed you guys especially literaturelanders. I want to mention names like Oluwabuqqyolo, Rachael, Tiffanyj (my mama), Royver (my author crush) agapecharis, etc but I won't be surprised if they aren't active here anymore like myself and that's even if I got the monikers right (it's a miracle I still remember the codes for smileys). Alright so aside trying to catch up on old friends and hopefully making new ones, I'm here to advertise my blog. I know right, I finally got one lol. So enough already and let's get down to brass tacks.
There are various ways we get our inspirations from. For some (and many) it’s music, books, movies to others, it might be real life experiences or purely imagination. And those are valid ways as I use them myself but then, I found that we still sometimes, run out of ideas or inspiration to write or do whatever art it is we do. We’ve all been there. So if you’re familiar with writers block, you’re at the right place. Because the truth is inspiration to write is everywhere around us and one only needs to be observant and curious enough to leave the comfort (regular) zones. Like trying something new maybe odd .
There are so many odd places to get writing ideas from however, I’ve selected only five (5). Whether it’s content writing, creative writing and in fact, generally arts you do. I’m about to broaden your options on getting ideas.
Eavesdropping
Yo! Time to get your ears up fellas. People dispatch plenty of information when they talk and the good thing is, you don’t even need to creep on them or spy on their conversations. You just need to follow on an interesting chitchat from two ladies or guys, in a bus or on a random queue. Trust me, you could learn a story or two to write about.
Animals
Weird right? Of course, we’re talking odd. I know for a fact that animals are a very fascinating creature to observe and even learn a few things from. Countless times I have caught myself watching an animal do something even as mundane as regurgitating, and then my brain go spinning several scenarios and patterns associated with the act. I try to imagine what goes on in their head when I see them exhibiting a certain behavior. Take my cat for instance, Tabby perfectly knows how to carry herself and still cherish her comfort, so I learnt poise from her. She’s also charming, now ain’t I? *flutters lashes* lol.
So when next you see an animal, be it your pet or kangaroo in the bush, stop and watch them with keen interest, you never know, that may be the answer to your next genius story!
Market place
I always say that the market is where you see all caliber of persons. From the mildly insane to the extremely insane to those that are just insane, by default!
A few times, I’ll stand by and watch, intrigued by the movements, dress, body language of diverse people, brushing shoulders, breaking sweat, spewing curses hauling germs in a rush to buy and sell! There are so many amusing characters to talk about in the market; definitely not a bad idea for comic write ups.
Gym
You already know that people think clearer when they’re fit plus funny ‘stuffs’ do happen in the gym. I once heard a weightlifter died after a bench press fell on his neck (this is not funny though). Now, you may want to maximize your next work out session so, instead of ogling at that hot lady’s behind or that dudes abs when you’re on break, get yourself a story to write about. Ogling a lil bit don’t hurt too though.
Taking walks
Oldie but absolutely a goodie. Especially, in our contemporary world where walking is seen as a punishment reserved for the ‘broke’ or stingy folks. Now not only is this activity healthy but it also allows one ample amount of time to think, reflect and meditate. Instead of jumping into the next available motorcycle or cab, take a walk. You also get to burn some calories and save some change for ice cream later
Now it’s your turn, what unconventional (odd or weird) ways or places do you get ideas from?
Please visit and subscribe to my blog if you loved this post, link in my signature. Hey babe, I'm still here. Trying to make a comeback, can you beleive it? That's life i guess. 1 Like |

"Aye, what seek ye in these gallows my good friend? Do ye not know tis’ the resting place for ghouls and monsters?"
It was a hot evening on that fateful day. The general hospital had just lost its quota of electricity and the person in charge had promptly run off to put on the standby generator. Urowoli stood at the entrance to the pediatric ward, all his muscles tense, his body sweaty, his proud itsekiri blood pounding furiously in his veins. On the outside he tried to exhibit a calm demeanor but inside his mind was in turmoil. Unlike the meaning of his name, he did not want to appear soft right now.
He was the man.
He was the pillar of strength.
Inside the candle lit children’s ward, his wife wailed in her high pitched voice. The infant had stopped moving. His chest had heaved its last. He had fought hard and long like the brave little boy he was but the illness had finally consumed him. The sudden flickering on of the incandescent bulbs in the ward did nothing to alleviate the gloom that had fallen. Other mothers murmured in silence. None were brave enough to approach the crying woman and comfort her. They tended to their own sick children and muttered desperate prayers under their breaths.
The now illuminated ward revealed the young doctor sitting dejectedly at the nurses’ station near the entrance. This is not what he signed up for when he left medical school a few months ago to start housemanship here. No one had taught him, prepared him, for the deep sense of loss from doing all one could do medically and still seeing the patient die in one’s care. He looked at the father of the child forlornly. He literally could think of nothing to say.
“Doctor, won’t you certify?” The nurse sitting beside him asked gently. “They have brought the light.”
The doctor sighed and nodded. He got up from the plastic chair he had been sitting on, and it made a scraping noise on the tiled floor, loud enough to let the mother know that the doctor was coming and she immediately intensified her wailing. Urowoli turned, saw the doctor move and quickly followed him.
“How goes it doctor, is there any hope?”
The doctor shook his head sadly and Urowoli clenched his teeth.
They had reached the bedside of the child. His skin had already turned a dull pale and his body was as still as any other inanimate object. Empty bags of blood and intravenous fluids hung at different sides of the small bed. The mother stopped her wailing momentarily to gaze at the doctor.
“Doctor eh, we can still do something eh, he is not breathing, he is not answering me, doctor do something eh, check him, check him…”
“Shut up, woman!” Urowoli barked sharply.
The doctor brought out his stethoscope and went through the motions. He knew the child was dead already. He flashed his pen-torch in the unresponsive pupils and scribbled in the patient’s folder.
“Doctor how is he? How is he? How is…”
“I’m so sorry madam, he’s dead.”
The woman threw her hands up, pulled off her scarf and tugged violently at her hair. Her screams spilled out of the ward like a violent tidal wave. People in the other wards came out to see what was happening.
Urowoli stood calm. He nodded and walked briskly out of the ward as his wife continued to wail and roll on the floor. A few moments later he was back with a black polythene bag in his hand, the sturdy one used by women to convey their purchases from the market. He picked up the corpse of the dead child and put it in the bag.
“Thank you doctor, I know you tried your best. My wife, gather your things, Nurse, let me know my bill so I can pay. I’m coming.
Everyone watched him quietly as he strode out of the ward, bag in hand. They shook their head in sympathy. They knew where he was going.
Urowoli marched out of the ward and headed towards the back of the hospital. He walked quickly and with determination as he wanted to get this unpleasant business behind him as quickly as possible. The baby had not stayed with them three months and he had tried not to get attached, but still his heart was heavy.
The forest appeared before him. The thick bush at the outermost part of the hospital. No one knew how the bush had grown so massively within the hospital premises or why none of the hospital administrators had bothered to clear it away. More than once bulldozers had come in and leveled the ground in front and around the bush to make way for new buildings, but the bush itself had been left intact. Various kinds of trees now thrived in its centre. They varied from palm trees to mango trees bearing untouched ripe fruits to tall luscious bamboo trees all connected by thick undergrowth. One or two security men saw Urowoli approach the forest but they turned the other way and let him pass. Urowoli strode on into the forest and was enveloped in the darkness. He took a few tentative steps further, his slippered feet sinking into the soft ground. Then he stopped.
There was perfect silence in the forest. Not a bird chirped, not a movement in the undergrowth. Urowoli stood still for a moment and then without saying anything hurled the polythene bag and its contents over his head and into the darkness. He turned and quickly went back the way he came.
A few moments later and the darkness stirred. Something moved stealthily through the bushes. The stirring increased and came from all directions until the undergrowth was a great fluctuation of movement all directed towards the foreign object that had been thrown in their midst. Long taloned fingers belonging to old, withered hands stretched out and the polythene was pulled away to reveal the corpse within it.
And then a voice, old yet firm and smooth as silk, with an air of centuries in its sonorous gasp, whispered:
“Ahhhhhh, steeeep a price you paid my child. You barely enjoyed the fruit of life.”
She touched the corpse’s legs and the dead child’s eyelids flickered and slowly parted as its anguished eyes gazed wonderingly at the entity before it.
“I see the pain that still remains in your eyes my child. I will release you of your burden so you can join our fold.”
The taloned fingers rose in command and the stirring in the undergrowth became frenzied. Big black rats, their eyes soulless and dark, emerged one by one from the hidden holes of the undergrowth.
“Come, come my sservantsss." She commanded, "And free him of his flesh.” 6 Likes 1 Share |

I'm sorry I pleaded with my hands tied as I woke up but instead recieved a whip to my back.I was Unclad and been tortured by a lady whom I just met. "Now kneel and bend forward" she shouted. I was left with no option but to obey, how did I get myself into this mess? Then it downed on me what I was into, she was coming with a strapon round her waist.Next I felt someone grabbing my waist from behind and slapping my ass.Trying to force that thing inside me.Ohh alcohol,if only I had listened to the voice of chibuzor. vs Kusibe77 What I said earlier about a progressive beginning and a reasonable ending. Good job @devilmaycry. The message has been passed across and you can guess what transpired earlier and what's most likely going to happen next. I can't see Kusibe77's entry? Is he still in the race? The Gambler One. night in Benin, a gambler and his wife were arguing. His wife nagged:" You are such a useless man!Your gambling is fruitless! When will you find a job and start acting like a real man?" The gambler replied: "You are right, I'll drop gambling and turn my wrongs into rights by starting with you, because marrying you is the worst gamble I ever did" Then he brought out a gold ring, he wore it and touched his wife, she turned into a shiny gold statue. The gambler sold the statue to an art museum and he became very rich.

Was this an attempt to mess his head ?
Leo felt someone was watching him, as if waiting for him to make a move on the terrible details he was given.

Correction Once again, good job to the both of you. Writing a good story within the space of 100 words isn't easy for most people. You have to be able to pass your message across as quickly and as simply as possible for it to make sense, for it to have a progressive beginning and a reasonable conclusion. In this scenario MisterRuk did a better job. Sorry @divineroyalty. MisterRuk takes this round. |

They say the grass is green on other side but I just found out it isn't. If anyone had told me months ago that I, Ejero will be a slave to one Goddamn Arab man in Malaysia. I will slap the person on both cheeks but here I am, lying on the dirty floor as a slave. The steel door opened and a hunky Arab man entered, grabbed a woman by her hair and dragged her out. Every day, someone is being dragged out of the cage to God knows where. Will I ever make it out of here alive?

Frankenstein Fighter
“Clear!”
The defibrillator hummed and jolted me. My mind flashed.
Mummy had warned me about following strangers to their house, but it’d been Bayo who’d taught me fractions and called me ‘Liddle one'.
I’d tried to push him off, but my 9-year-old body proved weak. He’d pinned me on his mattress.
But something had roared in me; Something unnatural.
I’d then bit, scratched, screamed. I was being battered but I’d fought, and I’d won, while he fled scared.
Two weeks later, I woke up in the ICU. Bayo had been caught and the Media was calling me Fighter Girl.
Cc Divepen Cc Royver Good job, both of you. Duch12 you did your best buddy, but your story is not as intriguing as that of Frankenstein's. Frankenstein. Your words are 101. I deleted one word and read it like that. Pls be more careful next time. Frankenstein takes it in this round. |
Literature › Nigerians Can Be Negative Sha! (part 1) by Royver(op): 6:29pm On Nov 20, 2018 |
On boarding a clean bus of a well-known transport company from Lagos to Asaba:
“Hmm, they are wasting time in loading.” (The person saying it was the last to arrive).
“This bus go fit run so?”
Don’t mind them, they take old buses and refurbish it so it looks new.”
“This one they said AC bus, I hope it is really AC?”
“E fit be AC but the AC no go work.”
Finally the bus is loaded. The “pilot” enters the vehicle and turns the ignition. It purrs confidently to life. He puts on the Air Conditioning, it is functioning maximally. He heads onto the express and out of Lagos. One by one the passengers begin closing the AC vents (Not me, I love the cold). The driver complains that the vents need to stay open so as not to affect the compressor. The passengers ignore him. He sighs and puts on a movie.
“Na so so nonsense film dem dey put for this company”
“Don’t you have africamagic?”
“Driver na sleep we wan sleep for road? Move this bus na!”
“It’s not his fault. The engine is old. I will not be surprised if the bus has fault on the way.”
“Sir, this is a new bus…” the driver retorts irritably
“My friend, were we talking to you? Drive fast, we have appointments to keep!”
Peace and calm for a few hours. The bus stops at a restaurant at Ore for a quick meal. The driver was in and out in fifteen minutes. Yes, I timed it. I had nothing better to do. I don’t eat on journeys. As the passengers alighted:
“They just stop anywhere they like.”
“Where will we see food to eat in this dump?” (Same lady goes and buys Eba and Oha soup with fish)
“If I had known there would be all these delays I wouldn’t have woken up early.”
“Hmm, na so dem dey do o. Before this driver go chop come out, one hour fit reach oh!”
The bus driver comes out briskly and boards the vehicle. We wait another 15mins while looking for other passengers that have strayed. Eventually we move.
Another hour passes. Suddenly a strange hissing. There are gasps and shrieks on the bus.
“Please remain calm!” the bus driver barks. There is silence. He slowly clears the road and parks at the side of the express. He jumps down to inspect. One of the tyres at the back has gone flat. Other passengers come down to see what’s going on.
“I said it! Old bus!”
“Madam it’s not the bus, it’s the tyre that went flat.”
“Expired tyres! I’m sure they don’t have spare!”
“Thank God we were not moving at high speed oh, we for sumersault oh. Everybodi for just die!”. (Well thank goodness for one word of positivity, sort of.)
“Pilot what are we going to do now? This is another delay and we are in the middle of nowhere!”
“I will sue you people! Nonsense!”
“I have a spare tyre ma. This is a new tyre, you can look at the spikes and the date of expiry, we must have stepped on something for it to burst-”
“Shut up! Do you know who I am? (How does that even matter in this situation?)
The driver quietly goes about getting out the spare and changing it. After a while some men assist him (another good point). Another bus from the same company comes and the driver jumps down to help. It still takes about 45minutes before the tire is changed. The bus is on the move again. And the murmurs continue.
“When will this journey end?”
“I know I’m going to be late.”
“I’m not following this transport company again!”
“Don’t mind them, they think they have made name”
“See him crawling on the road.”
I turn to one of them “I’m sorry, but don’t you think all this negative talk might actually be contributing to your getting late?”
He looks at me surprised and pauses for a moment. Then: “It’s not my fault it is the drivers fault. I’ve been praying that we arrive on time but this man keeps frustrating my efforts!”
“Well I don’t know”, I proceed cautiously, “But you’ve been very vocal since we left the park, most of your words negative. I think your pastors normally preach for you to confess positively in any situation-”
“This one is different!” He cuts me short. I smile and face my front. The girl besides me nudges me and whispers “Are you a pastor?”
I laugh. “No o. Just-too much negativity in the air. If their words actually have power this bus should have aged 10 years by now.”
“Don’t mind them o, tomorrow they will go to church and start confessing positively with their mouth yet in day to day activities they cannot do the same thing.”
“My sister, naija dey frustrate person jo…” Eba-and-oha soup woman interjects from a corner. They start talking about politics and why Nigeria will never work. I smile inwardly to myself. I have diverted attention away from the driver. And we arrive a few hours late. But I’m not bothered. We arrive safely.
And to me that is all that matters. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Kindly remember that stage 2 should be 100 words or less. Not more.
