Since the Advent and emergence of private universities in nigeria their aim, vision and aspiration is to unleash knowledge, moral, intellects and ingenuity on students and revatalize the educational sector from its deplorable condition but is appalling and disheartening dat most of the mushroom private univrsities are substandard and money making venture they run a university that's meant for research and entrench knowledge on students as business centre just for the monetary gain and social interest that's why most of the subodinate private universities are begging the government to be a beneficiary of the tetfund and the release of 200billion to all the public universities really enchanted and mesmerized their attention but how many universities will government fund and most of the vc's of these private schools are envisaging that as time goes on may be 10 to 20rs time they will fold up what will now be the fate of eggheads that graduated from the school.
That bit of folk wisdom credited to the Chinese had been with regard to business enterprises or other organisations. It is not clear if it applies to private universities. Less than 50 separate universities are listed under China, with a population of over one billion; Nigeria with one sixth of the population already has 128; and more are on the way. But, I can imagine that the Chinese universities have satellite campuses to handle the millions of kids university-bound in that country.
However, the Chinese must be really fortunate if their successful businesses get to the third generation before collapsing like a sand castle built by a kid on the seashore. No Nigerian business, to the best of my knowledge had gone past the first generation. Once the founder dies, the business goes into sunset.  Lest you are wondering what that has to do with the sustainability of private universities, let me spell it out for you.
Let me also remind you that what brought this topic to the front burner of our concerns about Nigerian universities was the disclosure that St Paul’s College (University), Virginia, U.S.A, which Nigeria’s current Minister of Aviation, Princess Oduah, allegedly attended, was in the process of closing down when media people went to verify if she actually collected an MBA from there.
The important part of the story rests in the fact that St Paul’s folded up. So have several private universities started and funded by individuals, who at the height of their financial achievements had started universities to immortalize themselves. But, the sad history of American private university education rests on the fact that once the fortune on which they were established gets exhausted or the endowment funds fail to keep pace with rapid changes in the economy, they lose ground to competitors and eventually have to close down.
Today, in Nigeria, there is not a single one of our private universities which does not depend on the goodwill, as well as good intentions of its founder. At the moment, there is no Nigerian university whose founder has died; so we have no example to which we can point about what happens thereafter.
But, we have the examples of what had happened to other Nigerian business empires which could have provided the funds to establish universities if the wealthy individuals had been allowed to establish private universities before 1999. By then, Sir Odumegwu Ojukwu, perhaps, comparatively, the richest Nigerian ever; Mr. Da Rocha in Lagos, whose sources of wealth remains shrouded in mystery till today; Alhaji Dantata of the 1950s and Chief M.K.O. Abiola had all passed on.
Granted, history only tells us what had happened in the past; it never quite tells us what might have happened. But, given the collapse of those financial empires, or their slide down the greasy pole of fortune, one can ask a pertinent question: Would the descendants of Ojukwu, Da Rocha, Dantata or Abiola, have had the zeal or the funds or both to continue the universities today? Starting a university is not an undertaking for mere millionaires in any age.
It is a business quite unlike others because its products, generally lumped together as knowledge, are not static. In fact, everything about them is so dynamic, calling for new investments in everything from buildings to equipment and manpower at a rapid rate.

he Shell Petroleum Development Company has inspired the University of Benin (UNIBEN) Shell Eco-marathon Team to dream bigger than it set out to do. From the initial project of building a fuel efficient vehicle for the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon competition in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the team says it is now working on local production of lightweight gasoline engine for cars, and commercial production of lightweight utility vehicles suitable for farm road mobility. Federal university is the best.

“The purpose here is essentially to develop local skills in engine making technology,” said the Project Coordinator of the team, Professor Akii Ibhadede, who led other members of the team on a ‘thank you’ visit to the Managing Director of SPDC, and Country Chair Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu recently.

Professor Ibhadede gave Shell credit for its support which he said contributed to the success of Team UNIBEN at the just concluded South African Shell Eco-marathon held in Kyalami Racetrack, Midrand, South Africa in October 2014, where the team won the award for the Most Innovative Design, and further distinguished themselves by repairing the engine of another team’s vehicle!

According to Ibhadede, Shell’s support to Team UNIBEN has led to a proposed partnership between a Benin city-based company and the (Nigerian)National Automotive Council to develop and produce, on a pilot scale, the lightweight utility vehicle for farm roads.

Apart from local capacity development, Ibhadede said the partnership would create employment opportunities in the local automobile industry. He therefore sought Shell’s continued support to make Team UNIBEN’s dream come true.

Mr. Sunmonu commended the team for its resilience and determination to move from its mere participation at the Shell Eco-marathon event in Rotterdam to making the project a pride to Nigeria.

“I’m particularly impressed with your ability to form a team across many departments in the university and work hard to be better by each passing day,” Sunmonu said. He charged the team to imbibe every leadership lesson learnt while working on the project, and encouraged them to accommodate as many students as possible who would want to share in the innovative task. This is an appropriate mandate for one of the first two teams from Sub-Saharan Africa to ever participate in this global competition.

The highlight of the visit was the presentation of the Most Innovative Design Award to the SPDC MD, and the personal presentation of the ‘The Head of Queen Idia’ carving to him, on behalf of the UNIBEN Vice Chancellor, Professor Faraday Orumwense. Federal university is the best

success recently, when she emerged the best graduating student at the 40th convocation of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Although she was a medical student, which obviously made her experience more demanding, she also carted away 12 out of the 18 prizes up for grabs in the ivory tower, leaving the other hundreds of students to scramble for the remaining six.

It was therefore not surprising that on each occasion when she was invited to the podium to receive her prize, a thundering ovation followed her footsteps.

With the 12 prizes from the Faculty of Clinical Sciences alone in her kitty, it was simply easy for her to win the Alhaji Kabir Usman Prize for the Best Overall Student with the Highest Number of Prizes for the 2012/2013 session.

Her other laurels are the Glaxo Allenbury and the Paediatrics Association Prizes Prize for the Best Result in M.B.C.H.B Degree in Paediatrics; Prof. O. Taiwo Memorial Prize for the Best in Clinical Examination; Olaningbe Makanjuola Memorial and the Nigeria Medical Association prizes for the best final M.B.C.H.B degree examination.

Others include the Lawrence Omole Prize for the Best in Community Health; Maj. Gen. Olufemi Olutoye, Candido-Da-Rocha, and the Adekunle Okute prizes for the best in Surgery; Tony Elemelu as well as the Prof. Adewale Akinsola prizes for the best graduating student in Medicine.

But how did Shittu make mincemeat of others, particularly engineering students, who many believe, usually win academic laurels with ease? How did she cope with the marital and domestic challenges not just to study Medicine but also to emerge the best graduate in her set?

She noted that three basic incidents in life fired her enthusiasm to excel. The first, according to her, was the hospitalisation of her mother when she was still young. The second is her religion – Islam – and the third, her friend who later became her husband.

She said, “My mother encouraged me to study Medicine. There was a time when my mother was so sick that she was on admission in a hospital for a long time. Then I was about seven years old. Many people thought that she was going to die. I was always by her bedside even at that tender age, keeping vigil.

“It was on one of such occasions that my mother told me that she would want me to become a medical doctor when I grow up.

“Even when my mother finally recovered, I recall that there were occasions too that my late father, who was not so literate, would take me to the University College Teaching Hospital, Ibadan just to observe the comportment of medical students at the hospital.”

Besides this parental influence, the valedictorian also holds the view that her husband, who is a lawyer, encouraged her to study Medicine.

She added, “I personally wanted to study Chemistry but he persuaded me to enrol for Medicine. He made me to believe that I would make it in Medicine. But taking the decision not to study Chemistry was not easy because it was a subject that I loved so much. In fact, it was my best subject and I looked forward to studying it until he encouraged me to enrol for Medicine.”

The young Muslim doctor added that she was encouraged to study Medicine by her passion to help Islam. She said, “In fact, the zeal to help my religion was another motivating factor.”

On how she managed to cope with all the challenges in marriage, she noted that her matrimony actually brought out the best in her. The lady, however, does not have a child yet.

Shittu, who married in her fifth year in the university, said, “It has been very pleasant and interesting experience. In fact, it was when I got married that I started enjoying the course. Things actually became easier for me after marriage because getting closer to my husband made the motivation to be more direct.

“I had most of the prizes I won after getting married. I had all my prizes when I got married except one. Marriage has a positive influence on my study. It aided me financially and boosted my psychological wellbeing.”

For Shittu, the success did not come that easy. According to her, it took a lot of reading and planning.

“When it comes to studying, I am not given to crash programme. I did not have to wait for the examination to be around the corner for me to begin my studies. I read every day and that way, there was never a time that I was under so much pressure.

“I tried to read six hours every day. In the medical school, many people are usually under pressure and that reduces their efficiency. But my secret is that I tried to work ahead. I read other books outside medical books. I read novels, newspapers and watched movies.

“During holidays, I rested and made sure I enjoyed myself to the fullest and when we resumed, I continued with my reading style,” Shittu, who has started her housemanship at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife, added.

Asked the kind of movies she enjoys, she said, “I watch movies where advanced technology is being used. I watch medical movies and the reason I watch such is to show me how medicine is practised in advanced countries. It serves as a means of motivation for me. They practise very diligently there. When I watch those movies, I try to picture myself in that setting and working with that zeal. But whatever I learn, I will make sure I come back to use it to influence my people.”

While many graduates are not sure of what would be their fate in the labour market, Shittu is already planning to impact positively on the society. She said that she was always moved to see some poor people dying due to lack of money for medical treatment.

To contribute her quotas to the welfare of humanity and especially the poor ones, she said, “I plan to establish a hospital to treat people and majorly the less-privileged ones. That has been my plan for a very long time. The reason is that not everything is about money. It is about fulfilment.

“I hope that will make God to be pleased with me. I feel that the honour, which God has bestowed on me, is not just for fun. It is not just for me to be known but to influence other people and to help the less-privileged ones that are usually forgotten.”

Meanwhile, the security challenge confronting the nation, especially the attacks on schools to deter youths from accessing Western education, came to the fore at the convocation.

Speaking through the Minister of State for Education, Prof, Viola Onwuliri, President Goodluck Jonathan said his administration was determined to conquer terror and restore peace in the country.

He said, “Another major challenge facing our universities today is that of maintaining stable academic calendar and safeguarding lives and property on campuses in view of the prevailing level of insecurity in the country.

“Vice-chancellors should strengthen the existing internal security network. They should be proactive in maintaining law and order and be security-conscious to detect the activities of insurgent groups.”

The President, who is the Visitor to the university, also lamented the dearth of teachers in the nation’s universities. He said that despite the over 2,000 programmes in universities in the country, the staff strength was less than 40,000.

He particularly urged older universities, including the OAU, to make conscious efforts to produce more PhD holders to solve the staff inadequacy in schools.

He also challenged authorities of the nation’s universities to develop strategies for diversification of sources of funding as well as to reduce waste in the system.

The OAU VC, Prof. Bamitale Omole, said his leadership had given security of lives and property priority.

He said, “The university is now better secured through the operations of the campus security unit. Also, an effective committee is assisting the security unit.

The cracker squad of the security and common services unit has been restructured and renamed OAU Safety Corps in order to serve the university better in terms of civility, approach, response and orientation.” Congrat to her all the best in her endeavors.

The deputy governor of Osun State, Titi Laoye-Tomori, was among dignitaries who watched in admiration as a drone built by a corps member posted to Osun took off and carried out surveillance of the parade ground at the Permanent Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps on Monday.

The corps member, Olaolu Ayoola, a graduate of Computer Science/Engineering of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, stole the show with his project during the closing ceremony of the orientation course for the 2014 batch ‘C’ of corps members deployed in the state.

The drone, which soldiers and other security agents present at the event described as a good one, flew for about 10 minutes before it landed.

The wonderful drone, fixed with a surveillance camera, can stay in the air for 20 minutes and is capable of climbing up to 500 metres...

The device with remote control and 2.4G radio transmitter carried out live recording of the event, which he monitored on his black berry phone.

Ayoola told Puncn in an interview that his love for aeronautics drove him into building the device.

According to him, apart from military use, the drone is also useful in hoisting flags as well as monitoring ongoing activities in large farms.

He said, “This type of drone, if fully developed, can be used by farmers. You can deploy it to fly round a farm of about 20 hectares and you will monitor what is going on.

“It can also be used to monitor traffic situation and flooded areas. I spent over N20,000 to build it, but I can do something with a bigger capacity and which will stay for hours on air if fund is available.”

Speaking, the deputy governor, who said she was impressed with the initiative, urged other youths to emulate Ayoola. She said, “I am very impressed with what you have done. It is a good thing and other youths should emulate you.

“Anywhere you are posted to, I want you to assemble a group of youths who you can teach how to invent something like this. You don't know that for a fact do you. Afterall, you need a certain standard to even be admitted. If you don't have a JAMB Score or a School Certificate, you possibly can't get admitted anywhere irrespective of how much you have.

I'm sure they teach you the logic of common sense in your federal or state universities. Since the year 2000 when the federal government of Nigeria under the leadership of president Obasanjo licensed private Universities in Nigeria. Many private universities have started operations and have promised the citizens quality education in a conducive environment but yet to deliver that promise. Private Universities in Nigeria have set vision to be one of the leading universities in the world for almost ten years now and none of the private universities in nigeria is in the top 150 universities in Africa.

Annoyingly These private universities in Nigeria charge an exorbitant price as school fees. Many of these private universities charge as much as 4000 dollars to the range of 10,000 dollars and yet failed to deliver talk more becoming better than the premier university of Nigeria(University of Ibadan.)

We have seen cases where these private universities are still yet to posses a good entrepreneurship program in their curriculum, lack of professors, lack of facilities and well facilitated laboratories.

In fact i would advice a student to attend public universities in Nigeria rather than attend a private university in Nigeria where he wastes his parents money on nothing.
