Olayinka Olamide Sadiq made history at the convocation of the University of Ibadan last week when he got eight out of 11 possible distinctions in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The 23-year-old indigene of Iragbiji in Osun State beat the record of seven distinctions set some years back. He was also the overall best graduating student of the university. Many at the convocation held at the International Conference Centre of the university were amazed when his name was called 31 times during the prize presentation. Sadiq’s lecturers and other university officials rushed forward to take pictures with him. But how could Sadiq, who always led his class from primary to secondary school, have opted for veterinary medicine and not medicine and surgery? He told The Nation: “Years ago, University of Ibadan practised a mode of admission where your credentials are graded; basically your JAMB and O-level results. Unfortunately, my O-Level was not included, so my weighted average was so low. It was 27.5; too low for the course I wanted. Veterinary medicine was neither my first nor second choice. It was an alternative as ‘change of course’ due to what I call irregularities, which prevented me from being admitted for Basic Medical Science.” He said he knew he was going to lead his class, but not being the institution’s best. “I knew I was going to do very well in the university, but being the best overall student of the year…sincerely I did not think of it. I had some B grades despite the fact that I still scored highest in those courses. The number of distinctions attainable in the veterinary school, university of Ibadan is 11 and I made 8. The other three courses were B grades,” he said. After his youth service, Sadiq plans to enrol for a postgraduate course in diagnostic medicine, hopefully in the United States. To be the best, Sadiq said he worked hard. “Being a first class student takes hardwork, focus and prayer to sustain. Some are gifted, but work is still required. Prayer is a necessity if we want to survive the hurdles of life; I am a Muslim and I pray five times daily. Distractions would always surface, but when you are focused, you will be able to achieve many things, even with the numerous distractions in the university.” He continued:“In veterinary school, 24 hours is never enough. Going to class Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 5pm; extra-classes on weekends, numerous tests from various departments…It is impossible to thrive without burning the midnight oil.” His hard work left no room for romance. “Well, there were friends; very nice and good friends, but not the one you think. Also, I did not have any regret whatsoever; though there were hard times, but God took total control,” he said. Will he be coming back to teach? “I have not decided yet, but research is a yes. (1) The first coup that occurred in Nigeria was the January 15 1966 coup the mutiny were instigated by five majors Named Major Adewale Ademoyega, Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna a cousin of Nnamdi azikiwe, Major Kaduna Nzeogu, Major Nwobosi and Major Obasi these dreaded and sinister fierce looking soldiers decimate and liquidated fine northern and western military officers including technocrats of western, midwestern and northern region but unfortunately no eastern technocrats or military officers were killed fine officers and technocrats killed were Ladoke Akintola, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the nigeria prime minister named Tafawa Balewa, the finance Minister Okotie Eboh, western military officers like Brigdadier General Ademulegun a fine Yoruba soldier and Col Sodeinde. (2) The Second Coup was a reprisal Coup and mutiny instigated by Northern soldiers like Col Muritala Mohammed, Major Theophilus Danjuma, major Ibrahim Babagida and other northern Military officers the northern Military officers believed the coup was genocidal and an Igbo Coup it was in this coup that major general Aguiyi ironsi along side the military governor of western region named Col Adekunle Fajuyi at government house ibadan a tentative report surfaced that about 300 eastern officers were decimated in the coup and General Yakubu Gowon was named the military Head of State. And it was the second coup that lead to the conflagration of 1967-1970. FUTA GRADUATES 4332, HONOURS EKWUEME, EMIR OF BAUCHI A total of 2,675 Undergraduate and 1,657 Post Graduate students will bag various degrees during the 27th Convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA whose grand finale comes up on Saturday, November 21, 2015. Out of the lot 28 earned first class degrees, 807 got second class (Upper Division), while 1,324 finished in the lower division of second class. 409 graduated with third class and 47 bagged with pass. Obakpolor, Osakpolor Eki of the Department of Physics emerged the Best Graduating Student with a cumulative GPA of 4.84. he Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Prof. Musbau Akanji, has called on the Federal Government to allow private universities in the country access the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). Prof. Akanji, who was speaking at Al-Hikmah University Ilorin, urged the federal government to review the Act establishing TETFUND to accommodate the private universities in its activities. It will be recalled that the vice chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Professor Eghosa Osaghae, had earlier lamented the exclusion of private universities from the proceeds of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) by the federal government. Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo state, issued an executive order today for nursing students of Igbenedion University, Okada to stop making use of the facilities of the state-owned Benin Central Hospital and the Stella Obasanjo Hospital. The Students of the School of Nursing affiliated to the Igbinedion University have since been enjoying the use of government hospitals free of charge over the years even when they pay their fees to the Igbinedion University. The five institutions are: University of Lagos, Lagos; Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osun State; Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State and University of Benin, Edo State. As part of the programme of events at the awards ceremony, selected scholars of the five institutions made five (5) minutes presentations on innovations of their choice. Tagged “The Etisalat Innovation Moment”, presentations were judged based on Adaptability, Value, Social Impact, Environmental Impact and Rate of Feasibility. The presentation by team UNILAG: “PROJECT SMC (Social Media Centre) got the third position while the first and second positions went to University of Benin and Obafemi Awolowo University, respectively. The awardees from the University attended the award ceremony along with the Hall Mistress of Moremi Hall, Dr. Virgy Onyene (who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rahamon A. Bello, FAEng on behalf of the Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, Professor G.O. Babawale) and a 3-man team of Office of Advancement: Mrs. M.I. Enuoyibo, Mr. T.O. Akeju and Mr. B.E. Oreyomi. The UNILAG delegation to the event presented the dummy-cheque of the total amount of the cash awards won by the University and ten students (One million, one hundred thousand naira: N1, 100,000.00), to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rahamon A. Bello, FAEng on Tuesday, December 23, 2014. The presentation was done by the Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, Professor G.O. Babawale; Hall Mistress of Moremi Hall, Dr. Virgy Onyene and Acting Head, Office of Advancement, Mrs. M.I. Enuoyibo. The Etisalat Merit Award is a Scholarship Scheme designed to fulfil the company’s goal of empowering the society through knowledge acquisition and promoting education within Nigeria. The Scheme focuses on awarding grants to second and third year students attending Nigerian universities. Students of the University of Lagos have been selected for the award for three (3) years: 2009, 2010 and 2014. 52 First Class as FUTA Graduates 4,324 Students The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) held the combined 25th and 26th Convocation Ceremonies for the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 session graudands on Friday December 19th, 2014 at the New Auditorium of the University. A total of 4,324 students received their first degree certificates with 52 of them bagging first class. Speaking at the event, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, Dr. Mohammed Shata, implored the graduands to use their new status and the skill acquired to bring about the transformation of Nigeria’s technological, political, social, economic and educational systems. In his convocation address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola appreciated the Federal Government’s commitment to the development of education by releasing funds under the NEEDS assessment initiative. He pledged a prudent and judicious utilization of the funds. Prof. Daramola charged the graduating students to remain worthy ambassadors of FUTA and always remember to contribute their quotas to the development of the University. Cross Section of FUTA Graduates About 1,761 were conferred with the Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees during the event. High point of the occasion was the conferment of the institution’s honorary doctorate degrees on Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) and Alhaji Bashari Aminu, Chairman Board of Directors of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency for their contributions to national development.
