In a bid to hasten the payment of their five months salaries owed by the Governor Ayodele Fayose- led administration, Ekiti State workers has taken their case to God, as they declare a three-day fasting and prayer for striking workers in the state. The organised Labour, which have led its members on strike in the last three weeks, also said there was no truth to the rumour making the rounds that the strike had been suspended. According to a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti yesterday, the fasting and prayer which begins today will end on Thursday. The release was signed by the secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. O. P. Olayemi; Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Mr. J.A. Adebayo and Joint Negotiating Council, Mr. Oladele Ayodeji. The social media was awash with rumours yesterday that the trade unions decided to suspend the strike after an exhaustive meeting with the governor, which the source said was held on Sunday. Yesterday’s statement reads: “In view of the current situation in Ekiti State as regards the ongoing strike embarked on by the entire workers in Ekiti State. “All workers in Ekiti State are invited to a three-day fasting and prayer from Tuesday to Thursday 16th June. It is expected that this should be replicated at all the 16 Local Government Areas in Ekiti State.” Speaking in Ado Ekiti on the suspension stunt , the Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Comrade Odunayo Adesoye, said the rumour that the strike had been suspended was far from the truth. Flying Eagles coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, has said
he is optimistic of victory in Saturday’s first leg
Zambia 2017 CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations
qualifier against Burundi in Bujumbura.
Nigeria won their seventh African title without losing a
match in the competition in Senegal last year.
Amuneke, who has named 15 members of the Chile
2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup winning side for
today’s game, declared the readiness of his players
for the clash.
“We have prepared and have been working pretty hard
for the match against Burundi. The players know what
is expected of them and collectively as a team. We
are looking forward to the match with optimism,”
Amuneke told Cafonline.
“Individually and collectively, we are doing everything
in order to be on the same page and when we get to
Burundi, we are going to give a very good account of
ourselves as a team.”
Burundi qualified for the second round of the qualifiers
after the withdrawal of DR Congo from the first round
qualifiers while the Flying Eagles got a bye from the
first round.
Nigeria will bank on Chile 2015 highest scorer, Victor
Osimhen, tournament’s Golden Ball winner Kelechi
Nwakali and Bronze Shoe winner, Samuel Chukwueze
for victory in Bujumbura.
Amuneke, who won bronze at the 1991 All Africa
Games in Egypt, added, “I’m not under any pressure
but our business now is qualification for the
tournament in Zambia. I’m not going to discuss what I
know about Burundi here but what I know is that we
are going to face a formidable team; and I’m
confident we would be ready to play them in their
home and when they come for the return match.
“Though there are factors like high altitude as well as
the timing of the match to deal with, our players are
psychologically ready for these challenges.”
Despite reports that Osimhen, who suffered a
shoulder injury in their warm-up match against the
national Under-23 team last week, may not be fit for
the clash, Amuneke said he was not relying solely on
the Wolfsburg-bound player for goals.
“Victor is fine but this team is not only about
Osimhen. We are not only looking up to Osimhen
against Burundi. If he’s not available, there would be
somebody to take his place. I don’t depend on only
one or two players. We are building a team that can
play collectively. Osimhen is important to our team
but we have other important players in the team as
well,” he concluded.
The return leg will take place on the weekend of June
10-12, with the winners advancing to the final round
of the qualifiers that will give birth to seven teams to
join hosts Zambia for the final tournament from
February 26 to March 12, 2017. http://punchng.com/were-ready-for-burundi-amuneke/

Former militant leaders, under the aegis of
Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiative,
have urged the Niger Delta Avengers to embrace
peace and stop their unnecessary destruction of
pipelines and national assets.
The LPCDI, the umbrella body of most of the first
phase ‘Generals’ in the Presidential Amnesty
Programme, made the call after rising from an
emergency All Niger Delta Security Stakeholders
Meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
The ex-militants in a statement signed by the National
President, LPCDI, Reuben Wilson, aka ‘General
Pastor’, and made available to our correspondent on
Saturday, told the Avengers that the use of violence to
agitate for the betterment of the region was no more
necessary and had been overtaken by events.
Wilson, therefore, asked the NDA to rather channel
their grievances to President Muhammadu Buhari
through the office of the Special Adviser to the
President on Niger Delta Affairs, Brig.-Gen. Paul
Boroh (retd.) for more effective result.
He warned them that their current violent campaign
was not in the best and collective interest of the Niger
Delta but would rather impoverish the people of the
region, attract unnecessary hardship and worsen their
plight.
Wilson appealed to the Niger Delta people to give
President Buhari the opportunity to fulfill his promise
to the region by maintaining peace, saying there could
not be any meaningful development in an environment
ravaged by violence.
He added, “The Niger Delta struggle has advanced
beyond the use of violence. We had in the past used
violence to attract the entire world to the plight of the
region.
“We, therefore, need to utilise other peaceful and civil
means to build on the sympathy of the world towards
the Niger Delta for more effective results rather than
resorting to violence.
“That the current resurgence of militancy is an
unnecessary distraction to the current administration.
“That all groups and individuals actively involved in
the Niger Delta struggle should channel their
grievances to Buhari through Paul Boroh for more
effective coordination and positive resolution of their
grievances.
“That every Ijaw group or persons involved in region’s
struggle that for any reason is unable to utilise the
office of the SA to President on Niger Delta Affairs to
resolve issues bordering on the betterment of the
region or Ijaw ethnic nationality should utilise the
platform of Ijaw Youth Council or reach out to Victor
Ebikabowei, aka General Boyloaf, to mediate in the
resolution of such issues.” http://punchng.com/59374-2/ |
Nigeria's electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, said that aside from the National Convention of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holding in Port Harcourt on Saturday, May 21, 2016, it is unaware of another convention of the party. INEC's Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, said this in Abuja. This has however, discredited the parallel convention being planned by the PDP Concerned Stakeholders group led by former Information Minister, Professor Jerry Gana. Osaze-Uzzi said that contrary to media reports that two parallel conventions of PDP would hold in Abuja and Port Harcourt same day, there was only one PDP known to INEC, which had conducted congresses at all levels. His words: “There is only one PDP known to INEC, which has been holding congresses at the ward, local government, state and zonal levels. There is only one convention known to the laws and regulations of INEC for which we were given appropriate notice and that is the one in Port Harcourt.” Osaze-Uzzi said that the commission would monitor elections to all offices at the Port Harcourt convention, noting that “expect that of National Chairman, National Secretary and National Auditor following a court order of which INEC has been served’’. “As a law abiding institution, INEC is not going to monitor elections into these three positions because of the court order, except where there is contrary court order before Saturday. “But, for every other remaining position, we are going to monitor,” he said. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had stopped the PDP from electing anyone into offices of national chairman, national secretary and national auditor of the party at the Saturday convention. The court restrained INEC from monitoring and or recognizing the conduct of any election into the affected offices pending the hearing and determination of a substantive suit on it. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/inec-endorses-pdp-port-harcourt-convention-snubs-gana-group/ |

Fellow Citizens:
I have read the various observations about the fuel pricing
regime and the attendant issues generated.
All certainly have strong points.
The most important issue of course is how to shield the
poor from the worst effects of the policy.
I will hopefully address that in another note.
Permit me an explanation of the policy. First, the real issue
is not a removal of subsidy. At $40 a barrel there isn’t much
of a subsidy to remove.
In any event, the President is probably one of the most
convinced pro-subsidy advocates.
What happened is as follows:
our local consumption of fuel is almost entirely imported.
The NNPC exchanges crude from its joint venture share to
provide about 50% of local fuel consumption. The remaining
50% is imported by major and independent marketers.
These marketers up until three months ago sourced their
foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria at the
official rate. However, since late last year, independent
marketers have brought in little or no fuel because they have
been unable to get foreign exchange from the CBN. The CBN
simply did not have enough. (In April, oil earnings dipped to
$550 million. The amount required for fuel importation alone
is about $225million!) .
Meanwhile, NNPC tried to cover the 50% shortfall by
dedicating more export crude for domestic consumption.
Besides the short term depletion of the Federation Account,
which is where the FG and States are paid from, and further
cash-call debts pilling up, NNPC also lacked the capacity to
distribute 100% of local consumption around the country.
Previously, they were responsible for only about 50%.
(Partly the reason for the lingering scarcity).
We realised that we were left with only one option. This was
to allow independent marketers and any Nigerian entity to
source their own foreign exchange and import fuel. We
expect that foreign exchange will be sourced at an average
of about N285 to the dollar, (current interbank rate). They
would then be restricted to selling at a price between N135
and N145 per litre.
We expect that with competition, more private refineries, and
NNPC refineries working at full capacity, prices will drop
considerably. Our target is that by Q4 2018 we should be
producing 70% of our fuel needs locally. At the moment
even if all the refineries are working optimally they will
produce just about 40% of our domestic fuel needs.
You will notice that I have not mentioned other details of the
PPRA cost template. I wanted to focus on the cost
component largely responsible for the substantial rise,
namely foreign exchange. This is therefore not a subsidy
removal issue but a foreign exchange problem, in the face
of dwindling earnings.
Thank you all.
