Police Invitation Over Unnatural Offences – Need Legal Advice Please Guys, I need urgent advice. Last week I received a letter from the police at Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos. The letter says I am being invited for interrogation in connection with "unnatural offences" under Sections 214 and 217 of the Criminal Code Act. I am absolutely terrified. I am a private person and have never been in trouble with the law. The letter says I must appear on Monday 13th August 2018 at 1000hrs. It says my attendance is "compelled by urgent law enforcement requirements." I have already contacted a lawyer from Seals and Partners LP. They will come with me to the station. But I am scared of what will happen. The police letter is very serious and mentions 14 years imprisonment. Has anyone here ever received such an invitation? What should I expect? Please any advice would be appreciated. I am losing sleep over this. |
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has assured its officers and men across the country of better logistics packages, which will assist them in discharging their responsibilities dutifully. The NCS Assistant Controller General (ACG) in charge of Zone ‘A’, Aminu Dahiru, stated this while addressing officers of the command shortly after inspecting a guide of honour parade at the command’s office in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The ACG, who is on duty tour of the Ogun Area Command of the service, disclosed adequate provisions have been made for logistics in the 2018 budget. The customs boss stated that once the implementation of the budget begins, issues of logistics, especially operational vehicles, would be addressed earnestly. His words, “avoid whatever will bring disgrace to service. No one should go on one man patrol. Customs service is a well organised service if you allow the rules and regulations to guide you, you will never go astray. “If worse comes to worst, consult your colleague. No amount of rank can stop in consultation because no one has the monopoly of knowledge. “I know there are issues that need attention but all I can say is that the management is on it. As far as 2018 budget is concerned, the issue of vehicle has been taken care of. Very soon, you will all be satisfied”. Dahiru also revealed that the officers of the service would now be subjected to more training and retraining in order to operate according to world best practices. “The service is doing its best and you're squally being developed. That brought about Staff College. The intention is to make customs service a level playing ground for all. You may be here and asked to go to Gwagwalada for a course. “You may not be invited at once so that the facility won't be overstretched. If you support the system, it will work. If you decide from today never undermine to my post. “We have to be good ambassadors of Nigeria and the service wherever we are. While responding to questions and observations raised by some of the officers in the command, the customs boss suggested the command should device a means of interacting more with the local communities. “What I will suggest is that the area should see itself having something to do on that and may employ the services of experts in that area who could communicate in the local dialect. “Now that you've reminded us because of my visit, I will ask the Controller to write a Controller General and copy me so that I can assist in seeing it through. The ACG later in the day visited some of the creeks in Ipokia local government area of Ogun state as well as the first baggage of the customs service in Nigeria. The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has sought for improved synergy among sister security agencies in the country towards ensuring that smuggling activities are brought to the minimal level. The NCS Assistant Controller General (ACG) in charge of Zone ‘A’, Aminu Dahiru, stated this while addressing officers and men of the command at the command’s office in Ojofin, Ipokia Local Government of Ogun state. The ACG, who is on duty tour of the Ogun Area Command of the service, insisted that the menace of smuggling requires a combined efforts to be decimated. Dahiru warned that the activities of smugglers portend great danger for the Nigerian state if not urgently checked. According to him, “Smuggling is a menace to the nation and it is our collective responsibility to fight it. It requires a lot of logistics, personnel, synergy and cooperation. “But the truth of the matter is that even if you have all it takes in the area of logistics, a single organisation cannot fight it. No matter how equipped you are. “In essence, we need each other to end it. More so, we have to operate in a hostile environment as this. We have to talk to local people and make them realise the dangers associated to smuggling”. “This is because a smuggler can bring in anything that is dangerous like arms and ammunition. From onset, the intention is not good because there are things that can’t be imported”. The customs boss also disclosed that smuggling activities has continued to have negative effect on the revenue generation of government. He however requested for renewed patriotism on the part of the officers and men of the command, especially those operating at the hinterlands. He said, “another is that it benefits individual and not the country. Duty paid on goods goes to the nation’s account but the money made from smuggling goes into the private account of the individual. “In a nutshell, we have to have that patriotism required by law in each and every one of us. We must come together to be on the side of the state. If we don't do that, we are as bad as the smugglers. “I choose this pace to visit because of its significant. One is because of the convergence of the sister security agencies here. It shows there's is peace and understand and that will assist us to fight any war, be it physical or psychological”. “Your duties are supported by law while the smuggler is on his own. I urge you to work together because the goal is almost the same. We are looking for peace and revenue because if there's revenue and no peace, then the revenue becomes irrelevant. For any progress in human endeavor, there must be peace “Never look down on your colleague. There's no agency that is not important. We should do our work collectively and intelligently. The Ogun State Area of the Nigeria Customs Service says it made about 298 seizures with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N1.5 from January to July, 2018. The Area Controller, Michael Agbara, disclosed this to newsmen at the Idiroko border town of Ogun state. He also revealed that the command has seized over 20,000 thousand illegally smuggled foreign rice during the period under review. Giving further breakdown, the controller said the command seized 618 of frozen poultry products, 1,643 of 25 litres each of vegetable oil, 254 units of vehicles, 30 motorcycles, 49 sacks and 32 bales of second hand clothing, 164 compressed book packs, 8 sacks and 85 coconut packs of Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) as well as 624 kegs of premium motor spirit, otherwise known as petrol. He said, “on rice smuggling in the year 2017, a total of 21, 789 bags of rice were seized from January to December. But with the command’s reinvigorated efforts, a seizure of 20,574 bags of rice have been recorded with the period of January to July, 2018. “The above success story is an indication of full commitment of the command towards achieving the laudable policy of the present government in enhancing local rice production. “Suppression of smuggling is a core mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service and it is fought with daunting challenges in the Ogun Command”. Agbara stated that the command has received authorization from the headquarters to release some seized (perishable) items to the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport for onward delivery to Internally Displaced Persons in Borno state. He said this would create more space for fresh seizures. The Controller however enumerated some of the challenges being faced by the command to include inadequate barracks accommodation, scanning operation, need for modern baggage hall in Idiroko and need for landscaping of Idiroko premise and Abeokuta to prevent further damage due to gully erosion. Other challenges as mentioned by the Controllers are lack of modern clinic, inadequate number of operational vehicles, inadequate officers amongst others. He said that the command will soon commence the retraining of officers on arms handling in the collaboration with military formations within the state. Agbara assured that the command will continue to work assiduously to enhance its core functions of revenue generation, suppression of smuggling and facilitation of trade. The Nigeria Customs Service has again warned smugglers to desist from carrying out their nefarious activities in and around Ogun state. The Ogun Area Controller of the Service, Michael Agbara, handed down the warning at Idiroko shortly after conducting the Assistant Controller General in charge of Zone ‘A’ Aminu Dahiru, round some of the creeks in the state. Agbara insisted that the command will not rest on its hoarse towards ridding the state of smugglers. He reiterated that his officers and men would continue to seize foreign rice at any part of the state. The Area Controller also told newsmen that the command would continue to prosecute all arrested suspected smugglers in the state. According to him, “like I will always say, we are not going to relent. Even if they attack us, thinking that we will be intimidated, we will not be intimidated. I have told all the smugglers to relocate or we will deal decisively with all of them. “We will continue to warn them to leave smuggling of rice and be at peace. But as long as they don’t want to be compliant, we will follow them, whether to the creeks or to their warehouses. Anywhere we see foreign rice within the territory of Ogun Command, we shall go for it. So there is no safe haven in Ogun. “I want to tell all of them pomp and clear, we are not mincing words, don’t patronize Ogun because we will arrest you. We will apprehend you and deal with you according to the law. This is a warning to all smugglers. He commended the dedication of his men and solicited for increased support from the top echelon of the service. “We are not doing any magic. It is just the commitment of the officers. The officers are ready to go and the management has given us the backing and we cannot afford to fail. “I want to commend sister security agencies who have been very supportive of all our efforts. They have been collaborating with us”. Agbara also stated that the visit of the ACG would spur his officers to be more committed to their duties. “The ACG is in charge of the southwest, what we call Zone A. It is just like your father coming to your house, you know that you will have the morale booster. “He has come to see our problems, he as listened to us and he has given a sound advice on some of the issues and he has promised to take some of our challenges to the management to find solutions. “He has been to the creeks to the see the magnitude of the problems that we have been complaining about. If he doesn’t come, he may not know what we are facing. He has come to see it and he has equally proffered his own solutions and advice. “So it is like it will galvanize us to do more”. An All Progressives Congress, Gubernatorial aspirant and a member of board of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA), Engineer Temitope Stephen Kuyebi has emerged from the Imasayi area of Ogun West Senatorial district, saying he has all it takes to be the said 'whizkid' who will take the mantle of leadership from the incumbent Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. Kuyebi made this known in Ilaro, Yewa South local government, while declaring his intention to run for the highest political office in the state to party leaders in Ogun West Senatorial district. It would be recalled that the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun had hinted that he would hand over the mantle of leadership in the state to a whizkid. Engineer Kuyebi who traced his political career from the active days of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) to Action Congress (AC) then, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and later to All Progressives Congress (APC) he remained a progressive and loyal to the party leadership especially the current Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. He stressed that he was the first consensus candidate that was unanimously presented to contest for the governorship position by the entire people of Ogun west in the build up of the 2011 general election, but despite the unanimous endorsement, his party leaders prevailed on him to step down for the incumbent Governor due to his age and experience in politics. Kuyebi who said he was only 35 years at that time said he obliged, collapsed his structure and work for the emergence of the Governor, not minding other aspirants who left the party and those who want him to also pitch his tent elsewhere. He confirmed that out of all the eleven aspirants at that time, he remains the only one that has not left the party and that has been consistent in supporting the position of the leaders and the Governor in ensuring that the party remains in power at all levels. Narrating his political journey further, Kuyebi said he contested for the Senatorial seat during the 2015 general elections in Ogun state but was asked to step down for another elderly person, Senator Gbolahan Dada who is presently representing Ogun West at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly. He however said he believes that the time is now for him to pilot the affairs of state, adding that he will consolidate on the achievements of Governor Ibikunle Amosun in ensuring that Ogun State remains at the top among the committee of states in the country. When asked of the reason behind his continuous trust in the party, even after being denied both the Governorship and Senatorial tickets, he said, he believes in loyalty and especially in the leadership style of the sitting Governor. His words, " Like I said, I respect the leadership style of our Governor and I believe in the words of our leaders and now that the Governor has come out to say it is time for a younger person from Ogun West and it is a whizkid, I am certain that I perfectly fit the description . I believe that it is God that chose me, whizkid is someone who is highly intelligent, someone with a clear vision, someone with a clear goal and when I was telling you about myself, I told you that in my career, I started with the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and till this moment, I have been in Oil and Gas. “I want you to know that when talking about Oil and Gas, I am in the mainstream, where I have been privileged to have both local and the international training and its my prayers that God should grant me favour in the struggles. “Looking at where we are coming from, I am perfectly the right person, and I believe this is my time, looking at my persistence and sincerity to the leaders of the party, because it is not easy to contest in 2011 and they said go and sit down again i contested in 2015 they said go and sit down yet you still believe your time will come, these are great attitudes of good compatriots and I know my time has come. “I am just 43 years old and I have learnt a lot in politics, I have toured the 20 local government before, knowing all party leaders and giving honour to whom it is due in the party irrespective of the zone. Sincerely, it has not been easy, but I know that I was learning through the whole period and I am fully ready for the task ahead. “You said some people will not know that I have been long in Politics and that they will think I am a new entrant, well, I am not just a new intake into politics and in fact, I was active during the days of one of our leaders, Engineer Wale Bajomo of Blessed memory who pulled all of us together then as Yewa elites and made us understand that we must fight for our land, he also said that if we all pull back who will then liberate us, but during the struggle we lost him may his soul rest in perfect peace. “After that time, a team of progressives minded prominent sons and daughters of Ogun west came together and said who will go for us, since Engneer wale is no more, somebody has to lead the team, the vision for Ogun west liberation must not be buried like that. “After due consultation I discovered I have all what it takes to give it a shot though at a tender age, I was just 35 then towards 2011 , so I was very young but I called people together and we started in 2008 . “I started the grassroots mobilization from Temitope Kuyemi foundation and as at 2009 I called the first leaders meeting, where I unveiled my intention of wanting to give the race a trial. “That was a period when nobody will look at you because, the then incumbent Governor Gbenga Daniel wanted to have a successor, but the vision was clear and what we started then metamorphosed, and everybody began to clamour that the Yewa/Awori should be given a chance. “Consequently, I declared for the gubernatorial race in 2011, we started all we could do then, I remembered one thing that happened in the history of Ogun west, we have never had it so good then because we are always in disagreement among ourselves, as a result, Chief Olusegun Osoba called leaders in Ogun west to a meeting requesting that we should unanimously present one candidate. “After that request we started the campaign, we held series of meetings within Ogun west and to God be the glory, shadow election was conducted at Ado-odo Ota at Chief Roqib Adeniji’s house, where I won convincingly. “The leaders took me to Chief Olusegun Osoba’s house at Ikoyi, bourdillon where all the leaders prayed for me telling me that I should commence the campaign to the 20 local governments in the state, and that was 2010. “By the grace of God I proceeded with the campaign to the 20 local government areas in the state, we did it fantastically well but, in series of meetings in Lagos state under the leadership of Chief Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu among other leaders in Southwest even baba, the former Governor of Oyo state, Lam Adeshina was still alive then; they were all at the meeting and at the end of the meeting, Senator Ibikunle Amosun got the endorsement to lead as the gubernatorial candidate of the party. “We keyed in, to deliver the state for our party, other governorship aspirants left the party but I remained and with the supports of my followers we delivered the local government, constituencies, senatorial district, wards and even our units.” "So, at present, I see myself as a qualified candidate, highly experienced, young, bold, courageous, respectful, loyal, intelligent, sellable and God fearing"
