Six months after it was introduced on the floor of the Senate , the bill seeking to stop sexual abuse of female students in the nation’s tertiary institutions was passed Thursday, by the Red Chamber.

The bill, christened: ” Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Education Institution Prohibition Bill, 2016, sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo -Agege, APC, Delta Central, prescribed a 5-year jail term for lecturers and educators convicted of sexual harassment of their male or female students.

The bill also recommended expulsion or suspension for students whose claims of being serially abused by lecturers or educators are found to be false by any competent court.

In the alternative, the bill also proposed a fine of N5 million in the event that the accused person is convicted by a competent court of law even as it made provisions for lecturers and educators who maybe falsely accused by their students to seek redress.

In such instances, an accused lecturer or educator who is acquitted by a court can turn the heat on the student who shall be expelled or suspended, as the institution where both belong deems fit.

Shortly, after the passage of the bill, its sponsor, Omo -Agege, while addressing newsmen, expressed satisfaction with the action of the upper legislative chamber.

He explained that the menace of sexual harassment, especially in the nation’s ivory towers has been there for a long time, regretting that past administrations had not done enough to check the menace.

A former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode slumped in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Saturday, his spokesperson, Jude Ndukwe, has said.

Ndukwe said in the statement on Monday that Fani-Kayode’s family and his lawyers had raised concerns about his health when he was re-arrested by the anti-graft agency on Friday, but their concerns were ignored.

The statment read in part, “We made known our fears that Fani-Kayode’s life was in dire danger as long as he remained in EFCC custody or in the custody of any agency of the federal government based on discreet information available to us.

“This is apart from the fact that his health has been badly affected since his incarceration for a whopping 67 days based on some questionable ‘detention orders’.

“This fact is well known to the EFCC as Fani-Kayode’s lawyers have written several letters to the Commission reminding them of the health condition of the former minister of aviation.”

Ndukwe said contrary to the expectation that the letters from the former aviation minister’s lawyers about his medical condition and that he had yet to complete his “therapy” following his earlier detention, the EFCC refused to release.

“It is therefore little wonder that based on the history of his medical condition which the Commission is very much aware of, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode slumped while in detention on
Saturday, 22 of October, 2016,” he said.

“But for the quick and professional intervention of the medical team in the EFCC medical facilities, the story could have been different, it could have been fatal.”

He called on the EFCC to release Fani-Kayode pending his arraignment for the charges against him, warning that there would be consequences should anything happen to him.

A man in Southern Germany was beaten to death by four men after he publicly urinated near a church, police said on Thursday.

Police are searching for the four men who hurled insults and attacked the 51-year-old man recently after he was seen urinating close to a church in Freiburg, a city in Germany’s traditionally Catholic south.

According to police, the man told his son about the attack before succumbing to his injuries later that day.

However an autopsy confirmed that he died as a result of the attack. Report says public urination on Church buildings has become an issue of public concern in Germany, corroding the buildings’ sandstone foundations and leading authorities to institute hefty fines.

A mother and father in Brazil have discovered heart-breaking sketches drawn by their 5-year-old girl showing how she was allegedly sexually abused by a priest.


DailymailUK reports that the parents had taken her to a child psychologist after she became withdrawn and refused to attend any more of her English classes taken by 54-year-old Father Joao da Silva.

It was the psychologist that suspected sexual abuse and urged her parents to search their child’s room for any signs.

The girl’s parents found the sketches after their daughter suddenly refused to attend any more of da Silva’s English classes To their utmost shock, they found six heartbreaking drawings by their daughter detailing the sexual abuse, hidden in one of her books. One drawing shows a man apparently looming over a child who has a look of abject terror on her face. Another harrowing image apparently shows a girl lying on a bed with a man forcing himself between her legs. Underneath him the picture appears to show the girl screaming in either fear or agony.

Father Joao da Silva is said to have admitted the attack after the child’s furious father confronted him in the city of Montes Claros, in Minas Gerais in Brazil. When the father confronted the priest in a phone call, he told police, the cleric confessed to him.
