A 24-year-old welder, Musa Zuberu, has been arraigned for allegedly killing one Muhammed Abubakar for ritual purposes in the Okuta community in Baruten LGA of Kwara State. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant, Umar Taberu, caught the suspect with the decomposing head of the deceased. |
The Kwara State Police Command, on Thursday, paraded 12 criminal suspects, including a medical director for offences ranging from rape, armed robbery, cultism to rituals. The police paraded the chief medical director of Ayodele Hospital, Sawmill area, Ilorin, Dr Ayodele Joseph, for allegedly raping his patient, who is incidentally a nurse. Parading the suspects, the State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Paul Odama, said the medical director perpetrated the heinous crime on May 5, 2023. “On the 5th of May, 2023, one female victim (name withheld) a nurse by profession reported to the Police that she went to Ayodele Hospital at NO. 290, Sawmill Area, Lagos Road, Ilorin for surgery. The chief medical director of the hospital, one Dr. Ayodele Joseph during the treatment sedated the patient which led her to become unconscious. Before the sedation, fearing any mishap, the patient activated her telephone and placed it in a vantage position to record the surgery unknown to the doctor. “She woke up from sleep after the surgery to find herself fully naked, and when viewing the recorded video, she discovered that the said Dr. Ayodele Joseph had an unlawful sexual intercourse with her while under sedation. Investigation led to the recovery of the video recording of the sexual action of the said doctor on the victim which was also corroborated by the medical examinations conducted on the victim. |

The Kwara State Police Command on the 13 of may 2023 paraded three men suspected to be ritualists and fraudsters. The alleged suspects according to the Police Commissioner, Mr Paul Odama, the suspects are Mahmud Abdulraheem of Egbejila, Ilorin, a Herbalist, Abubakar Bamidele of Lagos and Odekunle Fawad also from Lagos. He said, “While on intelligence patrol of the Metropolis, Oc CP Monitoring section and his team around General Hospital Roundabout, Ilorin, accosted the above named suspects who were already in a commercial vehicle on transit to Lagos and on body search, assorted charms and other fetish items suspected to be for ritual purposes was recovered from them. “Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the second and third suspects came from Lagos to Ilorin to meet the first suspect who is a herbalist to do money making charms for them |
In Offa Local Government Area, on September 25, 2021, one Alade James of Alawe compound, Offa, was also arrested while burying the corpse of a 9-year-old girl, Faith Samuel of Onireke area, after killing her for ‘rituals’. Cultists, ritualists on the prowl From the celebrated case of Blessing Omowunmi Olajide, the University of Ilorin undergraduate who was raped to death, residents woke up to discover a severed head of a student of Kwara State Polytechnic placed under the popular post office flyover in late 2021. A week after the severed head was discovered, another suspect was hacked down along Offa Garage Road, Ilorin, believed to be a reprisal attack by members of rival cult groups. Up till now, security agencies or the families of the deceased are yet to find out what happened to the body. |

Deaths from kidnapping From the southern end of the state, the narrative of kidnapping for ransom climaxed with the recent death of the brother to Ambassador Olutola Onijala, an ex-aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, whose corpse was already decomposing in the forest before it was located by local hunters in Isin Local Government Area. The victim, Adegboyega Onijala, a fish farmer, was kidnapped on his way back from Olla community last year and later killed after collecting ransom from his family. The kidnapping of the APC women leader in Koro ward of Ekiti Local Government Area shortly after was equally deadly. The victim, Mrs Oluomo Sunday Abolaji, was killed in Ejiu, Obbo Ile and Osi forest during crossfire with the kidnappers in a rescue operation by the police to release seven other abductees. |
