Kogi, Akwa Ibom budget N174b, N365.251b for 2017

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has presented an estimated budget of N174 billion for the 2017 fiscal year.He presented the appropriation bill to the state House of Assembly yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital.
According to the governor, the proposal was divided into a recurrent expenditure of N58, 531, 404, 254, representing 33.47% and capital expenditure of N116, 320, 140, 269, representing 66.53%.
Bello explained that N32, 181, 492, 459 of the expenditure would be financed from internal sources, while the state’s share of the federation account would generate N8, 085, 355, 569.
He added that Value Added Tax (VAT) would contribute N2, 209, 764, 229 from the exchange differentials and N3, 880, 000, 000 from budget augmentation.
He said: “The fund available for the recurrent expenditure was N81, 666, 312, 024, out of which the personnel cost for the period was put at N32, 734, 234, 264 and overhead cost at N25, 797, 169, 990. The total recurrent expenditure for the year would be N58, 531, 404, 254.”
The budget had an estimated transfer surplus of N23, 134, 907, 770 for capital development fund.Bello described the budget as a balanced estimate, because the total estimated revenue was equal to the total estimated expenditure of N174, 851, 544, 523.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Umar Imam, urged the governor to address those issues of civil servants who were yet to collect their salaries due to uncompleted Bank Verification Number (BVN)’s exercise.
Also yesterday, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, presented his budget of N365.251billion, as against the 2016’s budget of N423.000billion.
The governor said the budget of N88.425billion recurrent expenditure, capital expenditure of N193.956billion and consolidated revenue of N82.870billion, was based on an oil benchmark of $35.00 per barrel.
The bill, titled “budget of consolidation” had a total projected recurrent revenue of N175, 000billion, as against N284.666billion in the previous year.
The appropriation for capital expenditure was put at N193.956, as against the N243.000 billion in 2016.According to him, the policy thrust for 2017 would be predicted on the developmental objectives and catalysts outlined in the state’s medium-term plan’s document.
The Speaker of the state’s assembly, Mr. Onofiok Luke, lauded the budget for curbing the excesses in governance, promising that the House would pass it in the next few weeks.

Iran’s flag carrier finalised a major deal with U.S. plane maker Boeing Co. to buy $16.6 billion worth of passenger planes Sunday in one of the most tangible benefits yet for the Islamic Republic from last year’s landmark nuclear agreement.
Iran Air’s deal for 80 jetliners is the biggest agreement Iran has struck with an American company since the 1979 revolution and U.S. Embassy takeover. It has the potential to transform Iran’s creaking and accident-prone aviation industry, which has been hobbled by years of sanctions.
Those curbs have prevented the country from buying new planes from Chicago-based Boeing and European rival Airbus, and in many cases made it difficult for Iranian airlines to secure much-needed spare parts.
The deal covers 50 single-aisle 737 Max 8s, a soon-to-be-introduced version of Boeing’s existing narrow-body 737 line, reports The Associated Press.
It also includes 30 777s, a wide-body, twin-engine plane typically used on long-haul routes that is popular with other Persian Gulf carriers such as Dubai-based Emirates. Half of the order will cover the 777-300ER version, while the rest will be of the 777-9 model still under development.
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said the planes would be delivered over the next decade. The first will start to arrive in 2018, Boeing said.
In September, Washington granted permission to Boeing and Toulouse, France-based Airbus to sell billions of dollars’ worth of aircraft to Iran. Airbus needed U.S. approval because at least 10 percent of its planes’ components are of American origin.
The U.S. and other world powers agreed last year to lift crippling sanctions on Iran in exchange for it curbing its nuclear activities. The U.S. still maintains extensive sanctions on Iran for activities unrelated to its nuclear program.
President-elect Donald Trump and several Republican lawmakers have criticised the nuclear deal, but it’s unclear whether they would scrap the agreement, which was reached with Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China.
Iranian Transport Minister Abbas Akhoundi, who attended the signing ceremony, said it was a “historic” day for Iranian aviation and that the deal would create 8,000 jobs for Iranians.
“The deal has a clear message for the world: we support peace and security as well as the growth of Iran based on a win-win policy,” he was quoted as saying. “We hope that despite changes in the U.S. administration, the country will remain loyal to its commitments.
The Republican-led House of Representatives last month voted to bar commercial aircraft sales to Iran in a move that could block the Boeing deal. That legislation must still pass the Senate, where it will likely face opposition from Democrats. U.S. President Barack Obama has said he will veto the bill if it reaches his desk before he leaves office on January 20.
Boeing made a point of saying it worked closely with the U.S. government throughout the deal-making process and will continue to “follow all license requirements.” The Iran Air deal “will support tens of thousands of U.S. jobs” linked to the 777s alone, it said.
The plane maker said the deal value was based on list prices, though in practice customers typically negotiate discounts for bulk orders.
Most of Iran’s aging fleet of 250 commercial planes was purchased before 1979, and as of June only 162 were operational, with the rest grounded because of a lack of spare parts. Antonio Conte has slammed claims that Chelsea could be hit with a points deduction as punishment for their role in an explosive brawl with title rivals Manchester City.
Both Chelsea and City have been charged by the Football Association for failing to control their players following the ruckus that marred the closing moments of a 3-1 win for Conte’s side at Eastlands last weekend.
City’s Sergio Aguero was dismissed for an ugly lunge on Chelsea defender David Luiz, sparking a bench-clearing row between players and coaches from each team that ended with Fernandinho red carded for pushing Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
Just last season, Chelsea were warned about the future conduct of their players when they appealed against a fine imposed for their part in an ill-tempered London derby with Tottenham.
The Sunday Mirror says their latest clash could prompt the FA to hand Chelsea a points deduction for bad player behaviour for the first time since 1990 when Manchester United and Arsenal were punished following a mass brawl.

Rotimi Akeredolu, has said he has no score to settle with Bola Tinubu, but believes that it was not out of place to not have acknowledged in specially in his acceptance speech on Sunday, November 27.

According to him, Tinubu, like other leaders of the party, fall under the leadership of Buhari and Odigie-Oyegun.

Akeredolu made this explanation when he and his deputy, Agboola Ajayi, on Wednesday paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

On why he didn’t mention Tinubu while thanking leaders of the party in his speech after winning the election, he said: “I thanked the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the leader of our party profusely for the leadership which he showed leading to this election. I also thanked our indefatigable chairman for standing by the truth and for his position on this matter that led to this election. I have no reason to do otherwise.

“You see, party structures to the best of my knowledge is very clear. You have the leadership of the party and that is represented by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. And after the election, a chief executive emerges, he becomes a leader of the party, you don’t have to personalize and be looking for leaders all over the place. If we have to do that then I will have to mention 36 or 37 leaders.

“So I believe the leadership as represented by the president covers all leaders and that tells me it would include Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it would include even Baba Akande, Onu, so many leaders. But president Buhari is the leader of the party so that is my position there,” he added.

Asked how he was going to amend his strain relationship with Tinubu, he said: “The relationship with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has always been the same. I don’t think we have any strain relationship. For me as a person, I believe he is one of the leaders of the party and I don’t see any strain relationship between us.

“And you would observe that he has sent in his congratulatory message after the election, so what else do you expect? I mean all of us see this as victory for the APC, not for Akaredolu, not for as an individual but for the party as a whole.

“I believe he is a member of the party. Mr. Femi Adesina had issued a release but you journalists just want to put words into our mouths,” he said.

He said: “When you say a defection, Senator Yele Omogunwa even joined us in the campaign right there in Ondo State, he had joined the APC, he only just formalized it on the Senate floor today.

“I mean when you have a party that is already balkanized like the PDP, from bottom to the top they have two candidates, they have two chairmen now. So you don’t have to be sneaking between one chairman and another you make up your mind to go to a place that is stable.

“And I believe that he thinks that the APC is stable and he has come to a place he thinks his fortune will be better served and I am sure he took the right decision to join the party of the day.

“At the center the government of the President Muhammadu Buhari said we must look back in order to move forward, he has been there for over a year now, has he instituted a probe looking back is not a probe and I maintain that I will not probe any regime.

“This is responsible leadership I am elected to lead the people. The task ahead of us is enormous than for us to start instituting probes. My own is not to institute any probe of last regime and that is what president Buhari has done.

“But if we find out that wrongs were committed we have enough laws of the land to take care of people who have committed wrong. As we start our work as we go ahead if there is any semblance of Dasukigate at the state, the law will take its course that is different from probing. We will follow what Mr. President is doing at the center.”

Asked if he will end up reducing his campaign promises after assuming office, he said that what he met on ground will determine if all the promises will be met.

He said: “You see as a candidate, it is expected of you to have a fore knowledge of the position for example of the finances for the number of things we need to do and what it will take to do.

“Now it is quite possible and I don’t rule out the fact that, you might set out in your campaign promises to achieve 10 things at a time. But because there is no way you can know everything that is in government when faced with realities it might not be possible to achieve those 10 things at a go.

“But it is not to say that you will still not go for that 10. When you talk of review if you find a few things that are not in the right places, so there is nothing wrong if you try to review your campaign promises when faced with stake realities.

“But for us in Ondo state, we have come up with five Cardinal points and it is so clear to us. We have decided that we will embark on job creation through agriculture, industrialization and entrepreneurship and what is going to cost government. We need machinery because it is not going to be agriculture through hoes and cutlasses but mechanized one. It is given that we must go back to basis.

“On entrepreneurship we are going to encourage our state people to be self-employed and employ others. We are talking about public private partnership and there are a lot of people who want to come and build industries in our state because our state is a viable one.

“We are going to have enabling environment for industrial growth. What is the cost? Maybe land. And then when you talk of functional education and technical growth, when you talk of infrastructure, there are schools that are already dilapidated and we believe that rather than spend money on a mega school, that money can repair and put several schools in a better form. How much will it cost us? It is the same money that we are spending.

“We don’t want to take our people to civilization, we want to take civilization to our people. We want to ensure that the school within their vicinity are good enough for them to be interested in those school. Yes it is going to be cost intensive because we will develop our rural areas. We have told our people we are not going to build tar roads but we are going to provide accessible roads and when we have done our little bit people will do it for some time,” he said

*Metallic device grows when heated to help men with severe erectile dysfunction *Men with chronic gum disease likely to suffer impotence, study warns Scientists have created a heat-activated metal penis to help men with erectile dysfunction.

Developed by experts at the University of Wisconsin in United States (U.S.), the remote-controlled device lengthens to eight inches when heated to 42 degree Celsius.

The coil then warms the implant, making it expand and fully erect.

The device is made using nitinol, a metal alloy of nickel and titanium, which can change shape in different temperatures.

According to The Sun UK, the prototype device is to be tested on animals and could be available to men within a few years.

Asif Muneer from the British Association of Urological Surgeons, told The Sun the device had potential to benefit thousands of men suffering with erectile dysfunction.

“There are fewer components than with existing inflatable implants and that reduces the chances of infection,” he said.

Some patients are not suitable for existing treatments because they have already had major abdominal surgery, say for prostate or bladder cancer, and have a lot of scarring.

“With this technique, that’s not a problem.” Dr. Brian Le, from the University of Wisconsin, was among the team who developed the device.

He said: “We demonstrated that an Ni-Ti-based prosthesis can produce the mechanical forces necessary for producing a simulated erection without the need for a pump or reservoir, comparable with existing prostheses.”

This is not the first bionic penis to be developed by scientists.

Mohammad Abad, 44, from Edinburgh was fitted with the £70,000 replacement in 2012 after losing his penis and testicle when he was run over by a car at age six.

Four years ago, Mohammed had the life-changing surgery to create his penis, which was constructed using skin from his forearm rolled up like a “sausage roll”.

It was only made fully functional in July 2015 after a special operation, and he now he has an implant that allows him to have erections at the touch of a button.

Meanwhile, according to a new review of existing studies erectile dysfunction is more common in men with gum disease.

The authors write in the International Journal of Impotence Research, that chronic bacterial infection of the gums, or periodontitis, is common and a major cause of tooth loss for adults.

The condition has been tied to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and general inflammation, which in turn have been tied stroke and hardening of the arteries.

Stroke and hardening of the arteries are also associated with erectile dysfunction (ED).

“In our opinion, the actual biological mechanism of ED in periodontitis patients remains poorly understood,” said senior author Dr. Zhigang Zhao of The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University in China.

“It might still be too early to suggest that men with ED should have their teeth checked; and that men with chronic periodontitis should worry about their sexual function,” Zhao said.

“However, it might be beneficial to inform patients with chronic periodontitis about its association with ED.”

The reviewers analyzed data from five studies published between 2009 and 2014, including one randomized controlled trial.

In total, the studies covered 213,000 participants aged 20 to 80.

Each study found erectile dysfunction was more common among men being treated for chronic periodontitis, particularly for those younger than 40 and older than 59.

After accounting for diabetes, which can influence both gum disease and sexual function, erectile dysfunction was 2.28 times more common for men with periodontitis than for men without it, according to the report in the International Journal of Impotence Research.

“Since chronic periodontitis had been linked with several chronic disorders, it is sensible to recommend daily inter-dental cleaning to reduce dental plaque and gingival inflammation,” Zhao said.

“Chronic periodontitis treatment can control or eliminate inflammation and may reduce the risk of ED.”

One study in 2013 found that treating periodontitis improves erectile dysfunction symptoms.

Furthermore, clinicians should be aware of the potential role played by periodontitis disease in the development of erectile dysfunction,” Zhao said.

Lagos presents biggest ever budget proposed by a Nigerian state

The Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday presented the 2017 budget proposal of N813 billion to the House of Assembly, assuring that the budget would be judiciously implemented to continue the infrastructural renewal and the enhancement of Lagos as one of the foremost tourism and investment destination in Africa.

Mr. Ambode, who tagged the budget “The Golden Jubilee Budget” as it coincides with the State’s 50th Anniversary, said it would focus on physical infrastructure, while social sectors especially health, education, youth and social development would get adequate attention.

“In the course of the 2017 Financial Year, we shall carry out fundamental reforms on all our modes of transportation – Roads, Water and the Walkways. In this wise, a Public Transport Infrastructure Bond will be issued in the course of the year,” Mr. Ambode said.

“The State Government will embark on the Urbanisation of the Marina axis, Waterways Channelization, establishment of more Parks and Gardens as well as the Community Sports Centres and Stadiums in different locations across the State.”

The 2017 budget saw an increase by N150 billion from the 2016 budget.

The budget is also the biggest for any Nigerian state ever.

Giving the key components of the budget, Governor Ambode said recurrent expenditure would gulp N300. 535 billion while N512.464 billion would be dedicated to capital expenditure, representing a Capital/Recurrent ratio of 63 percent to 37 percent.

According to the governor, road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance would be one of the key focuses of the budget, adding that efforts would be geared towards roads that will open up the hinterlands, improve connectivity in the State and reduce travel time.

He listed some of the road projects to include Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road from Oshodi, Agric-Isawo-Owotu-Arepo Road in Ikorodu, Igbe-Igbogbo Phase II- Bola Tinubu Way in Ikorodu, Ijegun Imore Phase II Amuwo in Ojo axis, Oke-Oso-Araga-Poka in Epe, Epe-Poka-Mojoda in the Epe axis and the completion of the Abule-Egba, Ajah and Pen Cinema flyovers.

The governor also said that within the course of the budget implementation, his administration would enter into a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to execute some road projects including Oke Oso-Itoikin dualisation Project in the Epe axis, Okokomaiko-Seme Road Project in Badagry axis and Ikorodu-Agbowa-Itoikin-Ijebu Ode Road Project in Ikorodu axis, just as he disclosed that the Phase II of the 114 Local Government Roads project as well as the construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge would also kick off in 2017.

“We will fully implement the Medical Health Insurance Scheme and deploy e-Health/ e-insurance Health Service solutions; and complete the on-going upgrading and extension work in the State General Hospitals and Ayinke House in Ikeja. Work will commence on our Medical Park in the 2017 fiscal year,” Mr. Ambode said.

On the revenue expected from federal allocation, the governor said a conservative approach was taken owing to the falling oil prices, which according to him, was about $41.98per barrel at the time of finalising the budget.

He, however, expressed optimism that the state would get an increase in Federal allocation through the 13 percent derivation from Oil and Gas in 2017.

“In view of our financing gap, we shall continue to sustain deficit financing in the short-to-medium term; enhance revenue growth throughout the year on several initiatives including automation and efficient revenue administration,” the governor said.

Giving a sectoral breakdown of the 2017 Budget Estimates, Commissioner for Finance, Akinyemi Ashade, said the governor earmarked N205.85 billion for General Public Services representing 25.32 percent of the budget, N36.43 billion to Public Order and Safety, representing 4.48 percent, while Economic Affairs received a lion share of N295.84 billion representing 36.39 percent.

In other sectors, the commissioner said Environment got N56.31 billion, representing 6.93 percent, Health got N57.29 billion representing 7.05 percent, while Education got N92.4 billion representing 11.37 percent of the budget.

The Commissioner also said the budget would be funded from a total revenue estimate of N642.849billion while the balance of N170.150billion would be funded through a N100bn Bond Issuance program and a combination of internal and external loans.

Receiving the Budget, Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, commended Mr. Ambode for keeping faith with the 2016 budget in the area of implementation, adding that Lagos has witnessed a quantum leap in the last one year.

Mr. Obasa, while assuring the governor that members of the House would give the 2017 fiscal document due diligence for the benefit of Lagosians, called on the Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to furnish the House with all the necessary documents to enable it fast-track the budget approval process.

The Lagos Speaker also seized the occasion to call on the Senate to reconsider the Special Status Bill for Lagos State, saying there was no better time to accord the State such recognition.

The official news agencies of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait quoted religious authorities as saying on Monday that the annual feast will begin on Wednesday after failing to sight the moon that marks the start of the three-day festival.
The starting day of Eid varies every year and from country to country depending on geographical location.

A suicide bomber has killed four security officers and injured five others near one of Islam's holiest sites in the Saudi city of Medina, according to the interior ministry.
The bomber detonated his explosives after being stopped outside the Prophet's Mosque, a statement said.
The mosque is the burial place of the Prophet Muhammad and Medina the second-holiest city in Islam after Mecca.
Suicide blasts also struck two other Saudi cities on Monday.
That an attack happened in Medina at such a place is likely to leave Muslims around the world aghast, BBC World Service's Middle East editor, Alan Johnston, says.
Suspicion is likely to fall on so-called Islamic State (IS), he adds.
Al-Arabiya gave a different account of the incident, saying the bomber had targeted the security officers by pretending he wanted to break his Ramadan fast with them.
Qari Ziyaad Patel, 36, from South Africa, who was in the mosque, told the Associated Press news agency people had at first thought it was the sound of the cannon fire that marks the breaking of fast.
The ground shook, he said, adding: "The vibrations were very strong. It sounded like a building imploded."
Earlier, at least one explosion rocked Qatif, an eastern city which is home to many minority Shia Muslims.
The blast appeared to target a Shia mosque. The attacker was killed but no other casualties were reported.
A suspected suicide bomber also died after detonating a device near the US consulate in the city of Jeddah. Two security officers were slightly injured as they tackled the man, but no-one else was hurt.
No-one has yet said they were behind any of the attacks.
They come with the holy month of Ramadan drawing to a close and ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
Saudi Arabia has been the target of attacks by IS over the past two years.
In June, the interior ministry said there had been 26 "terror attacks" in the kingdom in that time.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Thursday presented the Year 2016 Budget proposal of N665.588billion to the House of Assembly, with a pledge that his administration would not only implement the budget faithfully, but also ensure that it worked in the best interest of Lagosians.
The governor, who christened the 2016 budget “The Peoples Budget”, said it was an improvement of 26 percent over the budgets of 2014 and 2015 respectively which stood at N489.6 Billion individually.
“The increase will enable our government to focus on the present challenges of security, traffic gridlock resolution including physical and social infrastructural development which has thrown up new challenges quite different from what we used to experience and have always known”, he said.
He said the 2016 budget, which is the first full budget of the present administration, would promote massive investment in security, transport and traffic management, physical and social infrastructural development and enhance job creation.
He said the intention of his government was to use the 2016 budget to strategically build new infrastructure, as well as maintain existing ones, adding that wealth and employment creation would also receive adequate attention in the course of the year.
Giving a breakdown of the budget figures, Governor Ambode put the recurrent expenditure at N278,909bn while capital expenditure stands at N383,678bn, explaining that the capital to recurrent ratio is 58:42 as against 51:49 in 2014 and 2015.
Governor Ambode also put the total revenue estimate for 2016 fiscal year at N542.873Billion, saying the balance of N119.714billion would be funded through deficit financing constituting 0.41 percent of the state GDP, based on 2016 budget alone and a cumulative debt to GDP ratio of about three percent.
On the size of the budget, the governor earmarked N120,508,571,598 for General Public Services representing 18.19 percent; N28,559,021,841 to Public Order and Safety, representing 4.31 percent; while Economic Affairs received a lion share of N211,043,408,183, representing 31.85 percent.
In other sectors, Environment got 8.1 percent of the budget totalling N53,043,599,505; Housing and Community Amenities, got N62,713,091,867 representing 9.46 percent; Health got N64,677,679,096 representing 9.76 percent while Recreation, Culture and Religion has N4,636,917,054 which is 0.70 percent of the budget.
Education sector also received N113,379,337,664, representing 17.11 percent of the budget while Social Protection got N4,025,980,116, which is 0.61 of the budget.
Governor Ambode said due to the falling oil prices, the budget was pegged at $38 dollar per barrel, saying it was in line with maintaining a conservative approach in estimating the Federal allocation for 2016.
“Fiscal Federalism and according Lagos a Special Status will benefit the State as we implore the Federal Government to look into this as soon as possible. As you are aware, the Federal Government still owes Lagos State over N50billion expended on federal roads in Lagos state. We look forward to an early refund to enable us utilize the fund on other infrastructure that require attention”, the governor said.
Explaining some of the highlights of the budget, Governor Ambode said the state government would commence the A-Meal- a-Day Programme in the state Public Primary Schools with effect from next year, adding that it would be done in collaboration with the Federal Government who would provide 60 percent of the funding, while the State Government matches it with 40 percent.
“This programme promises not only to improve the daily nutrition of our children, it will also create an economy of its own, with opportunities for job creation, income generation, poverty alleviation, and so on,” the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Habib Haruna, quoted Mr. Ambode as saying.
“I am happy to inform you that in 2016 we will develop our e-Curriculum, leading to the distribution of Ibile Tablets to students in our public schools. This revolution, at the Secondary School level, will set a new standard in our educational system, and further enhance the knowledge of our children to enable them compete effectively with their peers in developed countries”, the governor said.
On security, Governor Ambode, while acknowledging that it was a major challenge confronting the state within the first few months of his administration, said the government adopted a multifaceted approach at tackling this challenge, just as he pledged to continue to support the security agencies in 2016.
On road infrastructure, the governor said one of the assignments his administration had embarked upon was to regularly inspect the state of the roads to ascertain their conditions and ensure that they are motorable, assuring that while ongoing projects would be given priority in the course of the year, new roads would be constructed across the length and breadth of the state.
Receiving the budget, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, commended the governor for procuring security equipment to combat insecurity in the state, just as he assured that the budget proposal would be meticulously looked into by the House.
Dignitaries present at the event include former speakers of the House of Assembly including Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Olorunnimbe Mamora, Jokotola Pelumi, national assembly members, members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers, religious leaders, among others.

Perhaps it’s time to be a little more careful with how you use social media. Social media is already influencing job search in some countries but in the coming year, your social media posts may influence your US visa application.
According to the the Wall Street Journal, the US Department of Homeland Security is already set to put into place protocols to examine how visa applicants use the social media. This means your posts on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks may get your visa application approved or denied. Under this new policy, checking an applicant’s posts on Facebook and Twitter may become standard for visa application.
This is obviously driven by the recent San Bernardino shooting where one of the attackers had already made use of social media to express her support for extremism. Most of these social media posts were made before she even applied for the US visa and a simple background check on social media activities probably would’ve prevented her entry to the US in the first place.
A statement sent to Business Insider by the Department of State Security said:
“ In fact, over the last year, under Secretary Johnson’s leadership, the Department initiated three pilot programs to specifically incorporate appropriate social media review into its vetting of applicants for certain immigration benefits.
The Department is actively considering additional ways to incorporate the use of social media review in its various vetting programs.
There isn’t much much information on this right now and the DHS is keeping a lid on how the plan is going to be carried out but given the present situation, getting into the US is going to be a lot harder. What you consider a normal Facebook post might raise a red flag.
As an individual, perhaps it’s time to be more careful on social media. Your posts on Facebook and Twitter may later affect you. Even the kind of videos you put up on Youtube should be decent.
