AgricultureRe: Please Help: Can I Use Chemical For Land Clearing Of Maize/cassava Farm? by saliubello(m): 8:57pm On May 08, 2017
sagacious2016:
Update:
I have been able to clear the land and planted my maize.
The farmland has been extended to 30 acres of maize only for now.

But there is another little problem. The maize is about three weeks old but it has almost been taken over by weed. This is despite spraying with athrazine and ParaeForce herbicides immediately after planting.
Now I don't know which herbicide to use that will not affect my maize but will kill the weeds both broadleaf and grasses.
Any expert advice will be appreciated.
Dear friend,

All of your questions are very simple to attend to. But in answering them, some pertinent or basic things need to be known. The efficiency of any brand name herbicide is strictly dependent on its Proper application.

Will you be using the manufacturer' application dosage or your instinct??
The timing of your application will equally determine its efficiency. A fairly wet soil will allow for herbicide efficiency than a dry/ caked soil.

Any brand of glyphosate must not be used at all at this stage. - for obvious reasons.

You are at liberty to choose between "Stricker" herbicide (if the field has a high percentage of grasses than broad leaved weeds) or any other brand of " 2,4 Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid" herbicide if the field contacts largely broad leaved weed or go with gramoxone or paraquat groups to just suppress the foliars of perennial grasses.

I hope this helps!

Nonetheless; its not usually a one cap fits all.

The pump or noozle calibrations, the walking speed of the farmer and deligence of the applicator will invariably affect the efficiency of herbicide choosen afterall.

AgricultureRe: How Big Is Your Farm?? by saliubello(op): 2:55pm On May 04, 2017
Kalusam:
I totally agree with you Oga Saliu, farming is not about how big the land is its about how well you manage the land. Especially in exotic vegetables farming, a well irrigated and partially shaded half acre will yield more profit(especially in the dry season) than even an unshaded and irregular irrigated (hand watered) 1 acre during the same period...sadly you may need the same resources to completely setup and manage the two! Choice is yours...learn from the experiences of experienced hands like the OP before committing funds to farming big lands when you don't have enough to finish it...that is the beginning of failure.
Im glad the message is well understood. Expect me around your farm sometimes soon. Let me come learn some new tricks.

In What League do you wish to PLAY??

What comes to your mind?? Division 2? Europa League?? Carlng Cup?? F.A?? No. No.

What Im refering to is the Strata or Level you wish to operate when it comes to agribusiness??

A producer? An aggregator? A Processor or what??

Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava Worldwide, yet we can not boldly say we have up to 50 cassava planter for large scale cassava mechanization!! The bulk is produced by millions of small holder farmers. Who are peasants, poor and often economically backward??

Is that the level you wish to play??

Why not STEP UP YOUR GAME

Be a processor instead.
Dictate the tune and dictate the dance.
Lift yourself anđ alot more out the poverty chains.
Why not embrace mechanization??

If they grow, you buy up from them..
You dictate the type of cassava they plant..
You dictate how much you buy..

Make HQCF,
Make Garri,
make fufu powder.
Make particle board,
make glucose,
make starch

You create the market they seek.!!

Imagine you invent your own rules in a game. You are a player, and the opponent plays by your rule...

Think about it

Does it occur to you that starting your large farm first with a trial or experimental field will save you lots of finances and stresshuh

Try various seeds, each on an experimental plot first is the only sure way to determine which is best suited for your area or farm location.

Try various brand of agrochemicals or various concentrations of these chemical is best assuarance of there efficacy. E.g the concentration that will be efficient in Kano -with sandy/silt soil will never be same with Ijebu Ode -where the high rainfall, high relative humidity and loamy soil.

Try out on a small scale and expand with each new planting season!
