Politics / Photos: Suspected Assassins Kill Former Edo Council Chairman, Prince Suleiman Af by sambintex: 10:03am On Mar 17, 2017
The former Chairman of Etsako-East Local Government Council in Edo State, Prince Suleiman Afegbua was killed by unknown gunmen on Thursday, March 15th. Preliminary reports indicate that the assailants, thought to be assassins, on the Benin-Auchi road, allegedly attacked Suleiman Afegbua, who was on his way to Benin.

According to a family member, Prince Malik Afegbua, the late council boss was in his Prado jeep with three other occupants when the assailants attacked him while the others escaped with injuries.
Confirming the incident, spokesman for the Edo State Police Command, DSP Moses Nkonmbe, said two of the three injured are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
He said that the command had deployed officers from the Anti-kidnapping Unit and other relevant units to comb for possible arrest of the culprits.
Late Afegbua was buried today according to Islamic rites. Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has expressed shock and sadness over the alleged assassination.
The Governor, while condemning, in strong terms, the dastardly act, urged security operatives in the state to immediately swing into action, unravel those behind the act and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, the visibly miffed governor, who received the news in company of his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, described late Suleiman as a progressive, peaceful and hardworking council Chairman, while promising that government will do what it needs to do to apprehend the culprits of this heinous crime and bring them to book.
“This is wicked and mindless”, Governor Obaseki said.
Continuing, Governor Obaseki noted that the incident was an ugly stain on the government’s drive to completely rid the state of violence and re-orientate the people towards imbibing the culture of reliance on the judiciary alone in resolution of real or perceived conflicts.
“Let me make it clear to the perpetrators that they have not only tested and affronted the government’s will to rid the state of men of the underworld among whom they belong, but that they have also tested the collective will of the people of Edo State.” he said.

On what steps have been taken to apprehend the culprits, the governor revealed that an investigative panel would be set up to work with the police towards unravelling the identities of those directly and indirectly connected to this cowardly act.
“The Government hereby assures the public of its resolve never to rest until the perpetrators are apprehended and the punishment the law holds out for the crime of murder administered to them as soon as possible”, he said.

Meanwhile, he also urged Afegbua’s family and the people of Etsako remain progressive and not relent in pursuing development in the area.
“The government shares this harrowing moment with you. May he rest in the boundless peace of the Lord, and may his family find the grace and strength to bear his loss. May the people of Etsako also find the will to move on and continue in his progressive footsteps to develop the area.”

Religion / Photos: Anthony Joshua Is Hit By Shocking Anti-muslim Abuse by sambintex: 9:14am On Jan 18, 2017
Boxing world champion Anthony Joshua has been hit with a wave of shocking anti-Muslim abuse after tweeting a picture of himself praying in a mosque.

The IBF heavyweight title holder took time out of his training to visit the religious building in Dubai, but was greeted with a torrent of criticism by so-called fans after sharing it online.

Joshua, 27, is not a Muslim, and has previously said he doesn’t follow any religion, but rather has an interest in them.

The British fighter tweeted a picture of him and two other men kneeling behind two copies of the Qoran inside a lavish looking Mosque in some rare downtime from training for his superfight with Wladimir Klitschko on April 29 at Wembley.

It was accompanied with the caption: ‘Besides luck, hard work and talent – prayer is a solid foundation.

A man identifying as Terry Johnson called on the Prime Minister Theresa May to deport Joshua for his faith in a twisted Tweet, saying: ‘Get out of my country.’

Mark Warren tweeted his disgust at the notion Joshua was a Muslim, declaring he was no longer a supporter or a fan.

Users Lee Wooley and Matt C both said they would be supporting Klitchko, while a man calling himself Right Wing Roy said he would not watch Joshua fight again due to his tweet.

A number of others shared the strange opinion, but many boxing fans stood up for the heavyweight.

Naz Rashid said: ‘To all the people hating.

‘Muhammad Ali was a Muslim and the greatest of all time, do you guys hate him as well?’

‘It was nice to join my brother as he led through afternoon prayer.’

The picture was then subjected to vitriolic comments from people who claimed to be fans of the London superstar.

Investment / No Money: MMM Nigeria Unable To Pay After 96 Hours Of Return by sambintex: 3:23pm On Jan 17, 2017
Mavrodians, the name of account holders in MMM Nigeria, are still unable to get paid a return on their investment more than 96 hours after the Ponzi scheme returned.

Some MMM participants said that although they were able to request for their money, they have not been paid as the system is still frozen, just as it was in December 2016.

Nan reports that Kolade Ogunwande, who said he put in N100,000 in November 2016, and referred two other people to the scheme, said his money had appreciated to N214,000 as of Friday, so he immediately requested for it.

“They have not paid me anything, but they said we should wait patiently to be matched with participants willing to invest in MMM. I have no choice than to be optimistic,” he said.

Lara Makanjuola, who also invested N100,000 in the scheme, said she was expecting N186,000, but she had not been able to request for her money.

She said anytime she requested to get help, the website said “mavros are not available for withdrawal”.

“I was supposed to collect my money two days to when accounts got frozen, but the person I was matched with didn’t pay.”

An Abuja-based couple, who requested not to be named, invested over N2 million in the scheme; they have also not been able to withdraw their money. As of Monday, when any participant sought to withdraw, the website put up a message that linked them to its previous freeze message, below:

“As usual, in the New Year season the System is experiencing heavy workload. Moreover, it has to deal with the constant frenzy provoked by the authorities in the mass media.

“The things are still going well; the participants feel calm; everyone gets paid – as you can see, there haven’t been any payment delays or other problems yet – but!.. it is better to avoid taking risk.: (Moreover, there are almost three weeks left to the New Year).

“Hence, on the basis of the above mentioned, from now on all confirmed Mavro will be frozen for a month. The reason for this measure is evident. We need to prevent any problems during the New Year season, and then, when everything calms down, this measure will be cancelled.

” Mavrodians, as MMM participants are called, are optimistic that their pay will come through, considering, the scheme’s last message of “hope for the poor”.

In the message, MMM said it “will only pay a certain amount per day”. “Please, be prepared to wait for a couple of days. We are certain things will then calm down, and the System operation will return to normal,” it said.

Health / Breaking News: Uk Scientists Discover Possible Hiv Cure by sambintex: 9:34am On Oct 04, 2016
Teams of scientist from five UK university have successfully completed a trial of treatment with a new therapy combined to be the cure for HIV.

Unidentified 44-year-old is the first of 50 people to complete a trial of the ambitious treatment, designed by scientists and doctors from five of Britain’s leading universities.

The Managing Director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure, UK, Mark Samuels, said the treatment was the first therapy created to have tracked down and destroyed HIV in every part of the body, including in the dormant cells that evade current treatments.

The scientists told The Sunday Times of London that presently “the virus is completely undetectable in the man’s blood, although that could be as a result of regular drugs.”

However, if the dormant cells are also cleared out it could represent the first complete cure.

Samuels said, “This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV. We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV. This is a huge challenge and it’s still early days but the progress has been remarkable.”

The trial is being undertaken by researchers from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, London, University College, London and King’s College, London.

HIV is so difficult to treat because it targets the immune system, splicing itself into the DNA of T-cells so that they not only ignore the disease, but turn into viral factories which reproduce the virus.

Current treatments, called anti-retroviral therapies, target that process but they cannot spot dormant infected T-cells.

The new therapy works in two stages. Firstly, a vaccine helps the body to recognise the HIV-infected cells so it can clear them out. Secondly, a new drug called Vorinostat activates the dormant T-cells so they can be spotted by the immune system.

A consultant physician at Imperial College, London, Prof. Sarah Fidler, said the new therapy was specifically designed to clear the body of all HIV viruses, including dormant ones.

Fidler said, “It has worked in the laboratory and there is good evidence it will work in humans too, but we must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy.

“We will continue with medical tests for the next five years and at the moment we are not recommending stopping ART but in the future, depending on the test results, we may explore this.”

Only one person has ever been cured of HIV. He is Timothy Brown, also known as the ‘second’ Berlin patient, who received a stem cell transplant from a patient with natural immunity to HIV in 2008.

Politics / EFCC To Re-arraign Sylva Before The Court Of Appeal. by sambintex: 6:44am On Oct 04, 2016
A former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have disagreed over the existence of 48 houses allegedly traced to the ex-governor.

While Sylva claims to own only three houses in Abuja, the EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, insists that the ex-governor owns the 48 houses and that the commission had begun fresh moves to re-arraign Sylva before the Court of Appeal.

The PUNCH had reported on Monday that the EFCC had traced and sealed off 48 properties allegedly owned by Sylva.

The EFCC had subsequently arraigned the ex-governor for an alleged N19bn fraud and slammed 50 charges against him.Three Federal High Courts had, however, struck out the case.

The PUNCH had reported that following Sylva’s victory, the ex-governor had reclaimed ownership of the properties, some of which had been rented out.

In a statement on Monday, Sylva denied ownership of the houses, insisting that he owned only three houses in Abuja.

Sylva, in a statement issued on Monday evening by his Media Adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, obtained by THE PUNCH in Abuja, described the report as “strange, speculative and malicious; as he does not own 48 buildings in Abuja or anywhere in the world.”

According to him, neither he nor the courts had at any time confirmed his ownership of such property. The former governor has threatened legal action over the report.

The statement reads, “We have read a report in a national newspaper, which was reproduced by a few online publications and in the social media, claiming that Chief Timipre Sylva had “retrieved 48 of his property which the EFCC seized during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan.

“We view this report with disgust, given its unconcealed speculation and vindictiveness regarding such a sensitive matter.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Sylva does not own 48 buildings in Abuja or anywhere in the world. So, the issue of reclaiming 48 houses does not arise.

“He has only three houses in Abuja, which he built before he became the governor of Bayelsa State. This point has been made several times before, and neither EFCC nor those who had used EFCC as a tool of persecution against Sylva during the Goodluck Jonathan administration have contradicted this fact.

“EFCC had taken their allegations of property ownership against Sylva to several courts without establishing anything against the former governor during the Jonathan era. Beyond the commission’s routine media prosecution, no court of law has found Sylva guilty of any crime.

“Indeed, in the course of the trials at the Federal High Court, Abuja, owners of some of the properties wrongfully attributed to him joined to claim their houses. The court ruled on the matter of the said 48 properties since 2013. Why is it now a subject of media attention? Clearly, this is a sponsored publication.”

However, the spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the existence of the houses to our correspondent on the telephone.

He said the anti-graft agency had filed an appeal at the Appellate Court demanding that Sylva should not have access to the properties.

Uwujaren said, “I have just spoken to Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) who is in charge of the case. He confirmed to me that the EFCC has begun moves to appeal the case, which means that he (Sylva) should have no access to the houses.”

Some of the houses, according to Uwujaren, include: a mansion at 3, River Niger Street, Plot 3192 Cadastral Zone AO, Maitama District, Abuja; nine units (comprising six one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments) at 8, Sefadu Street, Wuse, Zone 2, Plot 262 Cadastral Zone AO2, Wuse, Abuja, and two duplexes at 5, Oguta Street, Plot 906 Cadastral Zone, Wuse II, Abuja.

Others include a duplex on Plot 1271 Nike Street, Cadastral Zone AO5, Maitama District, Abuja; a duplex at Phase 1 Unit No. 1 (Villa 1) Palm Springs Gold Estate, Cachez Turkey Projects Limited, Mpape, Abuja; 10 units of one-room apartments at 8 Mistrata Street, Plot 232 Cadastral Zone, Wuse II, Abuja; five units duplexes on Plot No 1070 Dakibiyu District, Cadastral Zone B10, Abuja; 16 units service apartments at Plot 1181 Thaba Tseka Crescent, off IBB Way, Wuse II, Abuja, and 3 units of three-bedroom flats at No. 1 Mubi Close, Plot 766 Cadastral Zone A01, Garki, Abuja.

Politics / Ex-gov Sylva Reclaims 48 Houses From EFCC: PUNCH by sambintex: 6:43am On Oct 03, 2016
The then Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, has recovered 48 of his properties seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC).
As indicated by Punch, one of their reporter visited some of the properties, found for the most part in highbrow zones of Abuja, for example, Wuse II and Maitama, observed that a portion of the engraving ‘EFCC, Keep Off’, on the entryways or wall of the properties, had been wiped off the structures while a portion of the structures had been leased.

The correspondent, who posed as a prospective tenant, was informed that the rent for the properties ranged between N2.5m and N6m per annum.

The correspondent was informed that the 16 units of service apartments at Plot 1181 Thaba Tseka Crescent, off IBB Way in the Wuse II area of the Federal Capital Territory, cost N6m per annum including a N1.5m service charge. The building provides seven hours of power supply from a generator.

The correspondent observed that one wing had been painted while the other was under reconstruction.

A guard at the property said, “When the EFCC sealed off this property, it was rotting away. However, it was re-opened a few months ago so we started to refurbish the property. We have repainted the property and we have started renting the apartments out.”

At a block of flats, which comprises nine units (six one-bedroom and three two-bedroom flats) located at 8, Sefadu Street, Wuse, Zone 2, our correspondent was told that the rent ranged from N1.5m to N3m.

“Immediately the EFCC inscriptions were erased, all the flats were taken. There is no vacant apartment now,” the security guard said.

At a property located at 8 Mistrata Street, Wuse II, Abuja, it was observed that the property was a hotel, which charged between N25,000 and N45,000 per room.

During the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the EFCC seized 48 properties from Timipre Sylva in 2013, an act which the ex-governor described as a witch-hunt and political persecution.

He was subsequently charged with an alleged N19.2bn fraud.

The spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, had said in a statement on January 3, 2013, that the ex-governor allegedly stole funds from the state between 2007 and 2011.

The statement read, “The EFCC on Thursday, January 3, 2013, took possession of 48 properties of the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Timipre Sylva, who is being prosecuted at a Federal High Court in Abuja.
“The interim forfeiture order to attach Sylva’s property was granted by Justice A. R. Mohammed on December 21, 2012.

“Assets belonging to the former governor, against which a forfeiture order was obtained by the EFCC, include a mansion at 3 River Niger Street, Plot 3192 Cadastral Zone AO, Maitama District, Abuja; nine units (comprising six one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments) at 8, Sefadu Street, Wuse, Zone 2, Plot 262 Cadastral Zone AO2, Wuse, Abuja, and two duplexes at 5, Oguta Street, Plot 906 Cadastral Zone, Wuse II, Abuja.

“Others are a duplex on Plot 1271 Nike Street, Cadastral Zone AO5, Maitama District, Abuja; a duplex at Phase 1 Unit No. 1 (Villa 1) Palm Springs Gold Estate, Cachez Turkey Projects Limited, Mpape, Abuja; 10 units of one-room apartments at 8 Mistrata Street, Plot 232 Cadastral Zone, Wuse II, Abuja; five units duplexes on Plot No 1070 Dakibiyu District, Cadastral Zone B10, Abuja; 16 units service apartments at Plot 1181 Thaba Tseka Crescent, off IBB Way, Wuse II, Abuja, and 3 units of three-bedroom flats at No. 1 Mubi Close, Plot 766 Cadastral Zone A01, Garki, Abuja.”

The EFCC subsequently slammed 50 charges against the ex-governor and arraigned him before three Federal High Courts in Abuja.

However, the three courts struck out the case against Timipre Sylva, accusing the EFCC of abuse of court processes.

At the last ruling in November 2015, Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja, struck out the case on the grounds that it was an abuse of court process.

The judge held that the charges had been dismissed by two federal high courts, and resuscitation was tantamount to an abuse of court process.

Ademola also held that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the criminal charges against Sylva, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress.

He also inferred that Sylva’s case was one of persecution by people who wanted to get at him at all cost, using the EFCC.

He thereafter dismissed the case against Sylva.

In a recent document published on its website, the EFCC said measures were put in place to take Sylva’s case to the Court of Appeal.

However, Wilson could not confirm on Sunday if indeed the anti-graft agency had filed an appeal before the appellate court.

A source within the EFCC described the incident as unfortunate.

He said, “Now that Sylva has reclaimed the properties, he has the right to sell them. The moment he does that, we will not be able to recover anything from him and our ultimate goal, which is to recover stolen funds or stolen property, would have been defeated.”

All attempts to get a reaction from Sylva on Sunday proved abortive as his spokesman, Doifie Ola, neither returned our correspondent’s calls nor responded to a text message sent to his mobile.

Education / ASUP Strike: Federal Poly Ado-ekiti Shut Down Indefinitely by sambintex: 10:30am On Jan 21, 2015
The authorities of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, on Tuesday shut the institution indefinitely, leading to a mass protest by students.

The Rector, Dr. Taiwo Akande, ordered the closure of the polytechnic following the protracted strike action by labour unions in the institution.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Information, Mr. Ade Adeyemi-Adejolu, the rector said the decision was taken “on behalf of the Academic Board of Studies.”

The statement claimed that the closure which took immediate effect was “a mid-semester break for its full time programme,” and directed all full time students to return home and await further instructions.

“All residential students are therefore advised in their own interests to vacate the Polytechnic Campus latest by 12noon, today, Tuesday, 20th January, 2015,” it added.

The student protest was sparked by a congress held by the polytechnic’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics on Monday in which the lecturers resolved to continue with their strike.

The closure order further infuriated the students who demanded the removal of the rector over failure to reconcile with the aggrieved unions.

ASUP, the Non-Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Union of Nigeria Polytechnics had been on strike protesting against Akande’s leadership style which they said was against their interest.

The placard-carrying students who commenced their protest as early as 7am called for an end to the strike embarked upon by the unions which they said was affecting them.

The protest was led by the National Association of Nigerian Students Southwest coordinator, Sunday Ashefon.

The students claimed their school fees were outrageous and also complained that the polytechnic lacked electricity and water, adding that their hostels and lecture rooms were in bad condition.

The students alleged that the polytechnic authorities were owing the Benin Electricity Distribution Company about N2.5 million electricity bills which had thrown the hostels into darkness.

They blocked the Ado-Ikare road causing traffic gridlock. It took a combined team of Special Response Squad, Special Crime Control, the Police and Directorate of Security Service to disperse the angry students with tear gas.

Speaking with reporters, the Vice Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Ekiti State, Oluwapelumi Ogunmekun, said strikes in the polytechnic had disrupted academic activities for the last one year.

He accused the management and union of playing games with the destiny of the students expressing anger that lecturers at their Monday meeting voted in favour of continuation of their strike.

Ogunmekun alleged that the Student Union Government of the polytechnic had been compromised by the management hence the invitation to NANS to “fight on behalf of the students.”

But the polytechnic SUG president, Oladapo Ajibola, denied being compromised by the management saying he was also part of the protest to ensure the resolution of industrial action embarked upon by the unions.

He explained that the students had been on the campus since January 4 without any academic activity going on, saying the student union would have another meeting with the management to find a way out of the crisis.

The Deputy Rector (Academics), Afolabi Bamidele, explained that the management was working hard to resolve the crisis rocking the polytechnic and a headway would soon be achieved.

He disclosed that the management had met with the officials of the National Board for Technical Education, and Ministry of Education, and national leadership of the three unions in Abuja in a bid to resolve the crisis.

Bamidele said, “We are having a headway with the unions but one of the unions had a congress on Monday and voted that the strike should continue and we now feel that the students should go home so that they won’t be staying in the school doing nothing.”
