Education / Lagos Business School Adopts GMAT As Full-time MBA Entrance Examination by sambintex: 11:25am On Jan 16, 2015
Lagos Business School (LBS) has officially adopted GMAT as the only form of written assessment prequalifying applicants for its full-time MBA programme. This development, driven by the School's efforts
to boost the local and international competitiveness of its students, is a departure from the earlier model giving candidates the option to either write GMAT or the LBS entrance examination.Lagos Business School Adopts GMAT as Full-Time MBA Entrance Exam

The official GMAT exam, accepted by over 6000 schools globally, measures candidates' analytical skills and determines their preparedness for the business school classroom.

"Candidates who take the official GMAT have a very high tendency to perform exceptionally well in class and eventually graduate to become highly sought-after professionals," said MBA Director, Dr Uchenna Uzo. "The GMAT exam will help us identify candidates with the potential we need to achieve this."

According to the Marketing Manager of the programme, Segun Abodunrin, the GMAT exam remains the best parameter for vetting MBA candidates in business schools across the world. "It ties in with our aim to prepare managers with the right skills to thrive and succeed in an emerging continent like Africa," he explained.

Recently, LBS restructured its Full-time MBA programme, stipulating that candidates have a minimum of three years' post-qualification work experience as against one. The duration of the programme was also reduced from 21 to 18 months and offers students international exchange programme opportunities.

Education / How I Became OAU’s Most Awarded Medical Student - Mabadeje by sambintex: 5:46pm On Dec 22, 2014
Aderemi Mabadeje, 26, currently holds the highest number of awards for the 2011/2012 Medicine and Surgery class of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He speaks with MOTUNRAYO JOEL of PUNCH about the challenges he encountered.

Please introduce yourself?

My name is Aderemi Mabadeje, I was born on February I, 1988. I have four siblings. My father is a civil engineer while my mother is a civil servant.

What university did you attend?

I was privileged to attend the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. I studied Medicine and Surgery.

How many years did you spend in the university?

I would have spent fewer years if not for the frequent strikes we encountered. Nevertheless, I thank God that I spent about seven years. I finished with the 2011/2012 set.

How easy was it gaining admission into OAU and what challenges did you encounter?

I must say it wasn’t easy. The cut-off mark was quite high and competition was fierce. My admission into OAU then became a constant prayer point. I specially want to thank my big sister who kept parading the Faculty of Clinical Sciences to get the latest information and updates on the admission list. It was a real anxious moment for me, I can’t forget that moment.

Was it your decision to study Medicine?

The decision to study Medicine was entirely mine. My parents merely played a supportive role. I enjoy taking up challenges, thus when the time came for me to choose a course, I opted for something very challenging. I didn’t have doubts being a science student.

How was life in the university?

Life in the university as a fresher was overwhelming. There was so much to do, so many forms to fill, so many offices to report to and the large number of students made the lecture theatres small for the student size. I can still remember getting to lectures such as Chemistry 101 at 5am just to secure a sitting space even though the class was to start at 8am. After the lecture, I would then run across the road for the next class. It was really tiresome. But once I got used to the drill, it was all smooth sailing.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

I definitely faced many challenges, but a large percentage of them were administrative. It was tough because I was coming from a background where most things were done for me while I concentrated on just studying. Having to combine both for the first time was challenging. I can still remember the challenges I faced for not having an ID card throughout my first year because I missed the date for data capturing. I also didn’t like abstract courses like Biochemistry and Chemistry, thus I had to study extra hard. These were just a few of the challenges I encountered.

Was it easy balancing social life with your studies?

I didn’t face too many challenges probably because I wasn’t much of an outgoing person. Most social activities were a welcome development. The academic and social lives were never competitors. My academic life had an upper hand.

Were you in a relationship in school?

Yes, I was in a relationship while in medical school.

Looking back at your university days, what are you most thankful for?

I guess I’m most thankful for the grace to complete the long race. Not all that started ended. I’m grateful to God that I was able to complete my course hale and hearty. My family and friends were also of tremendous support. I’m humbled by their love.

Did you think you would win so many awards?

Yes I did. That was my main aim once I got into medical school. However, there were times when the results of in-courses (tests) were not favourable despite being adequately prepared. There were also times (in the clinical exams) when the outcome of my examinations was simply out of my control, yet I remained positive and it paid off. During those times, I exercised resilience, perseverance rather than the much famed brilliance or intelligence, though they play a part too.

What awards did you win?

I had the late Badru Prize for best result in orthopaedics and traumatology; the late Dr. Z. A Alabi Prize for also best result in orthopaedics and traumatology; the Glaxo Allenbury Prize for best result in paediatrics; the Paediatric Association Prize for best result in paediatrics and the Prof. O. Taiwo Memorial Prize for the highest score in a clinical exam.

What are the secrets of your feat?

I wouldn’t call them secrets, but I usually used the first week in each posting to look for a study plan that suited me and the demand of each posting. Hence, I never had a steady reading time. For instance, I read from 4am to 8am daily for postings that started by 10am, while I read from 10pm to 1am for postings that started as early as 7 or 8am.

The only thing common to my reading schedule was that it had to be just after I woke from sleep. I tend to assimilate better that way. I used to ask for pointers from senior colleagues, it helped me understand the tricky aspects of some postings. I also had a habit of answering all the questions asked during ward rounds on my mind.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I see myself completing residency and being a consultant general surgeon with emphasis on laparoscopic procedures, but as the saying goes, one step at a time. I’m currently observing the National Youth Service Corp scheme. I was initially posted to Adamawa State before I was redeployed to Delta. I hope to write the National and West African Primary Examinations along with some selected foreign ones very soon. Aside that, I’m also involved in volunteer activities with Brown Button Foundation, I plan to use the NYSC service year to get into more of their activities

Who are your role models?

My father(Mr. Gbenga Mabadeje) is my role model. I’m sure he won’t know until now. I learnt how to combine focus and hard work while I remained calm on the surface.

Where do you plan to practise: Nigeria or overseas?

I plan to practise medicine under a very professional system not punctuated with incessant strikes, regardless of where such an environment is found.

Some students complain about having to bribe their lecturers just to pass, did you encounter such a thing?

I must say, that has remained hearsay for me. I didn’t encounter such throughout my stay in medical school.

Is Medicine as tough as students paint it?

Honestly, I’m of that opinion. The understanding of Medicine doesn’t require rocket science; the main thing is to understand how best you study to assimilate. Some students might have to read for several hours while some read for just an hour daily and still have time for several social activities. The end justifies the means basically.

What is your advice to students who want to study medicine?

They should surround themselves with positive minded people and stick to their convictions. They should also pray regularly. The training length for Medicine is six years plus x years, but the stress is all worth the hassle.

What is your take on Nigeria’s health sector?

I wonder where I should start from. I feel the major issues troubling the sector are underfunding, and disharmony within health workers which has been precipitated by lack of proper job description resulting in incessant strikes.

Did you have fears about securing a job in the face of the level of unemployment in the country?

No. I must say, that is one of the perks of studying Medicine. You are trained to do your part by studying well and knowing your onions. With these principles one would go places. It is unlike other disciplines where you need a ton of connections. Also, the need for doctors is huge. Take for instance; we were just 13 doctors to take care of over 2,600 corps members in camp. You would be surprised how stone walls open up for you when you are good at what you do and know what you are worth.

If you weren’t studying medicine, would you have considered lecturing?

That is an emphatic yes, it is part of the training (smiles).

Family / Shocking! Baby Born With Three Legs by sambintex: 7:50am On Jul 04, 2014
Ana Paula was born a conjoined twin, with not just three legs but three kidneys and potential reproductive issues.

With three legs all to herself, the 22-month-old toddler from Panama will next month undergo a major surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children Los Angeles to remove the two that don’t work.

Her sister did not survive the procedure that separated them when they were roughly three weeks old. Their medical condition is so rare, in fact, that only a dozen survivable cases are reported each year, reports KTLA.

Ana is to have her middle leg removed; as for her right leg, the knee and foot aren’t functional, so doctors expect it to be amputated at the knee or higher.

“I think she’ll be very functional as a walker, at the very least with crutches or with the arm crutches or something similar,” one of the surgeons tells CBS. Still, even with a prosthetic she’s not expected to ever walk normally, and the doctors say she suffers other acute medical conditions as well.

Her treatment is being paid for by the nonprofit Children of War Foundation and two of the Shriners Hospitals for Children in California.

Politics / Fashola Employs 200 Graduates by sambintex: 6:59am On Jul 04, 2014
The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has given automatic employment to over 200 graduating students of the Lagos State College of Health Technology.

The governor, who is the Visitor of the college, made the declaration during his address at the second convocation ceremony of the institution in Yaba, Lagos, on Thursday.

Fashola in his address reminded the students of the importance of their profession to society.

He said, “Health workers, from the lowest to the highest, are like gods on earth. If you have not been ill before, you will not understand their importance. I have been ill, so I know what I am talking about.”

He wondered why health practitioners, whose primary duty was to save lives, should embark on industrial action.

“Health practice is a call to service, service to God and the community. If you are like gods on earth, why then should you go on strike? Imagine if God goes on strike. Imagine if the police, military or fire service should go on strike.

“Take the police for example – it is not as if all is well with them. You (the graduates) must make a choice between self and saving lives. You should endeavour to put your patients, whose life you are supposed to save, into consideration.”

On the issue of full autonomy for the institution earlier raised by the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Dr. Abiola Tilley-Gyado, Fashola said he would welcome any proposal that would ease the state government’s burden of having to concern itself with the daily affairs of schools.

He, however, cautioned that autonomy did not mean that the government would cede ownership of the institution.

This, according to him, is because the government in most cases would still be called upon, if any problem should arise.

The Chairman of the college’s Governing Council had earlier advised the graduands to be dedicated to their profession, so as not to waste the many years of training they had received.

The College graduated a total of 265 students from five schools namely, Environmental Health, Community Health, Medical Laboratory Technician, Pharmacy Technician and Health Information Management.

The graduands are for the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 academic sessions.

Crime / Human Parts Depot Discovered In Ilorin by sambintex: 10:16am On Jul 01, 2014
Abandoned buildings along Lagos‑Ilorin expressway near the Ilorin International Airport, suspected to be hideout for criminals dealing in human parts and other nefarious criminal activities have been discovered by men of the Kwara State Police Command.

Some of the items discovered in the six buildings of about 18 flats, said to be owned by an 85-year‑old socialite, include decomposed human parts, a decomposing headless body, decomposed human feet, snail shells, piece of cloth suspected to be used in strangulating victims, under-wears, NYSC caps, shoes, eye glasses, hand set cover, sandals, among other personal belongings, were found in the abandoned buildings.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ambrose Aisabor, said this during a press conference yesterday at the Police Headquarters, Ilorin.

Aisabor said the command’s special undercover agents, with information from members of the public, discovered the criminal hideout on Saturday.

According to the state Police Commissioner; “we have made another breakthrough in our efforts to ensure that we chase out criminals from this state and ensure that residents live in peace.”

He added that the identified buildings have inscription of “For Sale” written all over them. They are located near NASFAT praying ground, with a road separating the fenced buildings and the praying ground.”

The police boss, who said no arrest has been made so far, added that the aged socialite, who allegedly owns the place and suspected to be a native of Oro town in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, was being interrogated.

The Kwara State Police Commissioner, who also paraded one Ganiyu Lawal, suspected to be a robber, said the suspect removed a Toyota Camry, with number plate Lagos APP 645 AN, from where it was parked in Ikorodu, Lagos.

The military also said Ya’ari has coordinated several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011. Find the press statement signed by Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, after the cut…

A terrorists’ intelligence cell headed by a businessman who participated actively in the abduction of School Girls in Chibok has been busted by troops. The man, Babuji Ya’ari who is also a member of the Youth Vigilante Group popularly known as Civilian JTF which he uses as cover while remaining an active terrorist, also spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza. His main role in the group is to spy and gather information for the terrorists group.

Babuji has been coordinating several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011, including the daring attacks on Customs and military locations as well as the planting of IEDs in several locations in the town.

The arrest of the businessman who is known to deal in tricycles has also yielded some vital information and facilitated the arrest of other members of the terrorists’ intelligence cell who are women. One of them, Hafsat Bako had earlier escaped to Gombe State to avoid suspicion but was tracked and arrested. Prior to her arrest, Hafsat coordinated the payment of other operatives on the payroll of the group. In her confession, she disclosed that a minimum of N10,000 is paid to each operative depending on the enormity of his task.

Another female suspect named Haj Kaka who doubles as an armourer and a spy for the terrorists group has also been arrested. Until their arrest, all the suspects actively operated a terrorists’ intelligence cell in collaboration with others still at large.

In another development, troops deployed in Goniri, Yobe State, over the weekend, had an encounter with terrorists, resulting in casualties on both sides after the attack was successfully repelled.

Events / Fatal Shooting And Stabbing Cast Shadow Over BET Awards Yesterday by sambintex: 9:08am On Jun 30, 2014

A fatal shooting and a separate stabbing at unsanctioned parties celebrating Sunday’s BET Awards in Los Angeles cast a shadow over the event, where top superstars like Lil Wayne, Chris Rock and others were set to mark the best in black entertainment.

One person was killed and five injured in two separate incidents ahead of the show at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, Los Angeles police said. The events were “unauthorized and unaffiliated with the BET Awards,” BET said in a statement.

“The network and all organizers will continue to maintain a safe environment for all planned activities,” the statement said.

The death and four of the injuries followed gunfire early Sunday at a restaurant, Officer Drake Madison said. Separately, a man was stabbed in the stomach Saturday night at a nightclub.

The violence could change the mood at the ceremony. This year, some of the performers include Pharrell, John Legend and Nicki Minaj.

All the nominees

Top nominees were Drake, Beyoncé and Jay Z, who have five each.

Drake, who was originally set to perform at the show, did not attend. A representative for Beyoncé also said the singer wouldn’t attend, and her husband’s rep wouldn’t divulge if Jay Z would be there or not. Their attendance had nothing to do with the violence at the weekend parties.

Drake didn’t attend last year’s show, where he won video of the year. This year, the 27-year-old rapper’s Worst Behavior is nominated for the top prize, competing with Beyoncé’s Drunk in Love and Partition, as well as Pharrell’s Happy and Chris Brown’s Fine China.
