Emerging reports suggest that about 18 people have been killed following gun-duels in Gokana and Khana local government area of Rivers state.

The Punch reports that residents are living in fear due to the recent clashes within the state.

Sources say one of the victims was shot in front of RIVPOLY Secondary School.

There have been conflicting reports regarding the number of casualties recorded from the gun-battle between soldiers and militants within Gokana and Khana.

The 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army insisted on Wednesday, February 24, that nobody died during the operations in Yeghe.

However, witnesses claim that there were deaths following a bloody clash which ensued ensued after the army raided the residence of a former militant leader in Yeghe community, Solomon Ndigbara.

Supporters of the ex-warlord who popularly called General Osama Bin Laden had reportedly set fire to the campaign office of Senator Magnus Abe in Bori, to protest an invasion of their leader’s home by the army.

There were initial claims that a total of nine people were killed, most of which were said to be youths.

A source who pleaded that his name be withheld for the fear of being attacked, stated that some people in Gokana suffered serious gunshot wounds during the gun battle.

He added that the use of a bulldozer to demolish Ndigbara’s house had triggered rage in some indigenes of the area.

One John Baridon from Khana affirmed claims of death being recorded from the shootout. He also claimed that his younger brother was shot dead in Zaakpon community on his way from work.

In the past few days, there has been an increase in shootings within Rivers state. The city of Port Harcourt was reportedly left in a frenzy on Wednesday, February 24, following a shootout at the GRA axis of the city.

Sources disclose that the guffaw ensued following a clash between policemen and robbers who had just raided a new generation bank at Birabi street. As of press time, no casualty had been recorded.

Politics / Hameed Ali May Be Arrested Over ‘lopsided' Northern Appointments by sambisamam: 7:15am On Feb 25, 2016

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has threatened to order the arrest of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.).

The Federal Lawmakers, on Wednesday, said it would be forced to take such an action should the Customs Boss continue to refuse to honour an invitation to appear before lawmakers.

The committee is investigating Ali over a petition alleging the occurrence of ‘lopsided’ promotions and posting of personnel within the Customs.

The petition, which was sent to the House by the Ohanaeze Youth Vanguard, alleged that the abnormal promotions and posting commenced after Ali assumed leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service, in 2015.

According to the President of the Ohanaeze Youth Vanguard, Igweka Okonkwo, the Customs boss had ignored many officers from the South East when approving promotions and posting of personnel in 2015 when he took over the mantle of leadership.

Chairman of the committee, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, lamented the fact that Ali had repeatedly failed to honour several invitations sent to him by the committee in respect of the pending petition.

Nkem-Abonta said: “We have invited him repeatedly and he has been giving excuses. This is not a military era. He has now been summoned to appear before the House on March 9. If he doesn’t show up, a warrant will be issued for him to appear here.”

Speaking further, he described Ali’s conduct as being insensitive to the complaints lodged by aggrieved Nigerians.

“These are Nigerians who have complained to us and it is our duty to address the issue,” he added.

Politics / Pray For Nnamdi Kanu - IPOB Charges Christians by sambisamam: 6:27am On Feb 25, 2016
The IPOB Media and Publicity Officer in the state, Mr. Emma Powerful also called on Christians to pray for Kanu’s release.

Powerful said “Nigeria is dwindling to irredeemable situation under the All Progressives Congress, APC, government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Biafra is the only answer to the problem Nigeria is facing now. The APC government is confused and the people who led Nigeria into this mess, the APC henchmen, their so called national leaders who wanted change at all cost are now all dumb. They have no answer to the problems they have created. The only answer now is Biafra.”

The IPOB spokesman also said “We are not joking about this spiritual declaration. We have been praying and fasting. No bloodshed of Biafrans will go unpunished.”

“The APC members who are deeply religious should go and ask questions about the consequences of the atrocities they have committed with the killing of innocent youths who were praying at Aba, innocent youths who were peacefully agitating in Onitsha whom the military killed."

“When we were taking those they shot dead to hospitals, their blood was revolting against the APC government and the party which will never know peace until they leave IPOB and other Biafra agitating groups alone,” He said.

Nnamdi Kanu was arrested and charged by the Federal Government of Nigeria for treason.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce and other eminent Nigerians gathered in Akure to celebrate Ondo state’s 40 years in existence and to also discuss issues concerning the country.

The symposium which was hosted by Governor Olusegun Mimiko of the state brought together important Nigerians including elder statesman, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Mr Yinka Odumakin and Senator Shehu Sani

Anyaoku who was the former secretary general of the Commonwealth and the chairman of the symposium commended the governor of Ondo state for his efforts and achievement in the seven years he has ruled the state. He spoke on the economic issue the country was facing and agreed with President Muhammadu Buhari that devaluation of the Naira would lead to an” unacceptable drain of our external reserve.”

Senator Bruce on his part talked about the problems bedevilling the country. He blamed the issue of Boko Haram and the agitation for an independent Biafra state on hunger because “a large part of the people cannot feed themselves.”

He urged Nigerians to be more active in governance and that citizens should not fail to remove elected officials who are not performing well.

“We are the cause of our problem. We must learn how to take our government out of office if they don’t perform”

He described Nigerians as the most creative people who have been able to lead the government instead of the other way round.

Odumakin noted that the country was now divided due to different interest groups. He noted that the present administration was fighting corruption but was still encouraging that same menace on the other hand.

Governor Mimiko thanked the discussant for coming to the state and also applauded members of the state for their support. He noted that common sense could be taught but compassion could not which is missing in most Nigerian leaders.

He said: “Poverty is one of the centrifugal forces we must all come together to fight in Nigeria.”

Politics / Falana Asks Court To Bar Dollar As Legal Tender by sambisamam: 7:18pm On Feb 24, 2016
Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), filed a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, praying for an order restraining the Central Bank of Nigeria from allowing market forces to determine the exchange rate of naira.

The senior advocate also asked the court in his suit, FHC/ABJ/CS/146/16, to direct the CBN to stop the use of the United States of America’s dollar as a legal tender in Nigeria.

The suit was filed on behalf of Falana by a lawyer in his firm, Mr. Wisdom Elum.

The CBN is sued as the sole defendant in the suit which had yet to be assigned to a judge.

Falana alleged in the suit that CBN’s monetary policy‎ had led to a situation where too much naira was made to chase a few dollar with an attendant weaker naira and adverse multiplier effects such as rising inflation, closure of factories and high level of unemployment.

He also alleged that the CBN had so “dollarised the economy” that the foreign currency had become a legal tender, with school fees as well as rents now being charged and paid in dollars “to the detriment of the economy”.

‎He contended that while the CBN had fixed the exchange rate at N198 to a dollar, and President Muhammadu Buhari continuing to restate his vow never to devalue the naira, the ‎apex bank “had allowed market forces to increase the exchange rate to over N400 to a dollar”.

A supporting affidavit deposed to by another lawyer in Falana’s law firm, Mr. Femi Adedeji, stated, “The devaluation of the currency and dollarisation of the economy have made mockery of the yet to be passed 2016 budget of the Federal Government.

“The monetary policy of the defendant (the CBN) has led to a situation whereby too much naira chase few dollars thereby making the naira weaker in relation to the dollar and instigating an adverse multiplier effect.

“The monetary policy of the defendant has also led to increasing costs, rapidly rising inflation and interest rates, closure of factories and the attendant high level of unemployment.”
