Ms. Ifeoma Ethel Okpala, the 37-year-old niece of Mrs. Dora Akunyili, has a court date today in Judge Molokwu’s Court Room, Court 8, in Lagos in connection with last year’s drug arrest. The question on everyone’s lips is, Will she show up? Last August, Ms. Ifeoma Ethel Okpala was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for trying to board a flight to London with cocaine hidden on her body. She had 20 wraps ingested and another 54 wraps packed and worn as a diaper. Ms. Okpala was said to have been freed on bail as a result of “pressure from above.” How she jumped bail and escaped to London is a subject of an ongoing investigation. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the Head, Public Affairs, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), told reporters in Lagos that the agency is not aware of Mr. Okpala’s whereabouts. He said that it was the court that granted her bail. When pressed on when she was bailed and who granted her bail, Mr. Ofoyeju could not provide details. He also could not explain how Ms. Okpala escaped from Nigeria even though the agency has her traveling documents. He, however, denied that Mrs. Dora Akunyili had anything to do with Ms. Okpala’s case. Ms. Okpala was not just Mrs. Dora Akunyili’s niece; she worked for Mrs. Akunyili when she was the director general of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC. The Ms. Okpala’s incident has become a source of embarrassment to the NDLEA. Some in the NDLEA are said to be afraid that incidents like this will jeopardize its relationship with the U.S. government that has provided equipment and support for its anti-narcotics crusade. The United States has recently delisted Nigeria from the notorious list of countries that are major hubs for drug trafficking. International donor agencies that support the activities of NDLEA with funds and training have also expressed their displeasure at the selective discharge of justice at the agency. A source at one of the agencies told Saharareporters that the agency will review its relationship with NDLEA in the light of this revelation. “We cannot condone a situation where suspects who are relations of powerful Nigerians go free while other suspects are made to bear the full brunt of the law,” our source said. At the time of her arrest, Ms. Okpala made all effort to hide her real identity to avoid being associated with Mrs. Dora Akunyili. She gave agents of the NDLEA a fake home town of Ezinifite in Aguata LGA, Anambra. The news of her arrest threw the people of Ezinifite who live in London into confusion as they wondered which of their own was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Friends of Ms. Okpala told Saharareporters that since she returned to London, she has been gloating to her friends abroad that she had beaten the Nigerian system. She was said to be deriding those friends she felt did not support her while she was in detention. Ms. Okpala’s aunty, Mrs. Dora Akunyili, was nominated for ministerial appointment by All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, after she was defeated by Dr. Chris Ngige in Anambra Central Senatorial election. A former member of the PDP, Mrs. Akunyili resigned from President Jonathan’s cabinet and jumped over to APGA to contest the April 2011 election. Initially, the presidency was said to be favorable to Mrs. Akunyili’s nomination as a reward to APGA and Peter Obi who delivered Anambra State for President Jonathan. Saharareporters sources said that voices of dissent within President Jonathan’s screening panel who viewed Mrs. Akunyili as a self-promoter were waved aside until a security report on her unearthed the drug arrest of her niece. As at the time of going to press, Mrs. Dora Akunyili’s name is on the list of those who failed the so-called Jonathan’s ‘integrity test’ because of the circumstances surrounding her nieces’ embarrassing drug case. But our source said that we should not be surprised if she makes the final cut of ministers because of her connection to the Chairman of the PDP board of trustees, former President Olusegun Obasanjo |
Emboldened by assurances received after his visit last week to the Presidential Villa that the presidency would end EFCC inquiries into suspected money laundering crimes now under investigation, embattled speaker Dimeji Bankole has upped his challenge to the EFCC, demanding details of their inquiry in advance, SaharaReporters has learned. He made his visit to the Presidential Villa in the company of Senate President David Mark , sources said. Bankole is demanding to know specific details of the money laundering investigation in advance of his interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Home » News & Reports » News $1 Billion Dollar Scam: Speaker Bankole Demands Details Of EFCC Inquiry In Advance Posted: June 2, 2011 - 01:30 Posted by siteadmin caption: Dimeji Bankole By SaharaReporters, New York Emboldened by assurances received after his visit last week to the Presidential Villa that the presidency would end EFCC inquiries into suspected money laundering crimes now under investigation, embattled speaker Dimeji Bankole has upped his challenge to the EFCC, demanding details of their inquiry in advance, SaharaReporters has learned. He made his visit to the Presidential Villa in the company of Senate President David Mark , sources said. Bankole is demanding to know specific details of the money laundering investigation in advance of his interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Last week, Bankole obtained a reschedule of the date of interrogation, fixed for last Thursday, after he had the Clerk of the House request a new date from the EFCC. Dimeji claimed to be tied up with inauguration activities. The letter to the EFCC was written in the name of Bankole's chief of staff, Maurice Ekpeyong but incongruously, it was signed by another person on Ekpenyong's behalf. Law enforcement officials at the anti-graft agency told SaharaReporters that they are under no legal obligation to discuss with Mr. Bankole his offenses in advance. Since he was asked to appear before the EFCC to answer to petitions written against him, he should honor the invitation without delay. A full description of his offenses, if any, will be made if it is decided to charge him for those crimes, they said. Some members of the EFCC investigation team expressed dismay at Bankole's unorthodox behavior which, they said, had increased because of the protection he continues to enjoy from the president's office. The outgoing Speaker is said to have diverted funds into the account from budgetary allocations to the House of Representatives and has an eye-popping $1 billion laundered through domiciliary accounts at the United Bank of Africa . Meanwhile, Speaker Bankole continues to publicly attack the EFCC, most recently accusing them of “sensational prosecution and conviction on the pages of newspaper on an issue as grave as corruption.” |

A Police officer in Ekiti State Police Command, has been arrested by the command for allegedly despoiling and impregnating a 12-year old girl. The suspect whose name was given as Lasisi Nurudeen Olalekan, was said to have lured the Junior Secondary School, JSS 1, student (names withheld) to a nearby bush around Textile area, Ado Ekiti sometimes last year. The randy police officer, a corporal has been arrested on the order of the police commissioner, Mr Olayinka Balogun, following a complaint from Mrs Juliana Olajiga, a guardian to the innocent girl. According to a petition written by Mrs Rita Ilevbare, on behalf of a non-governmental organisation which was forwarded to the State police command, the NGO had raised an alarm over the illicit action of the policeman and called on the police authority to arrest the suspect. In the petition dated May 19, 2011, the suspect was said to have assaulted Mrs Olajiga when she confronted him over his disgaceful act. However, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Balogun has confirmed the reciept of the petition, disclosing that the accused person has been arrested and that a senior officer has been assigned to commence investigations into the matter. In the petition entitled: “Sexual abuse of Miss Bimbo and assault of Mrs Juliana Olajiga by Police Officer, Lasisi Nurudeen Olalekan”, demand for arrest, investigation and prosecution”, the policeman was alleged to have deceived the victim twice and forcefully had a carnal knowledge of her, which led to her impregnation. Mrs Olajiga, according to the petition was said to have tried for over three months to locate Olalekan to respond to the complaint from Bimbo, but to no avail . The NGO further alleged that the victim had inflicted bodily injuries on the complainant (Mrs Olajiga) at her residence Similoluwa on May 12, 2011 when the Policeman was eventually found. While calling for the prosecution of the suspected police officer, the organisation said, “Sir, it would interest you to note that this child, Bimbo, is a about six months pregnant, a minor, an orphan who is 12 years old “The education and the future of such a great child has been dimmed by a man, a security agent for that matter, who for any reason, will not allow the future of his children to be tampered with. We demand that justice be done in this matter by arresting and prosecuting Olalekan if indeed is culpable”, it concluded. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/policeman-despoils-impregnates-12-yr-old/ |

An event conceived as part of Jonathan's inauguration week has become a controversial bribe fest in Lagos, with about 400 participants receiving between N50, 000 and N150,000 each. The event took place yesterday afternoon when Mr. Jonathan had a lunch date with "Nigerian youths" at the Eko Hotel in Lagos as part of his inauguration which takes place next Sunday. Organized by some young people who were involved in the "What About Us" election campaign, the event on the surface sounded legitimate. A young person invited to the event from Abuja told SaharaReporters that the event was packaged as though Mr. Jonathan wanted to open dialogue with Nigerian youth but what came out was a sham. He said, "Last week, I got a call about today's event and it was played up as a conversation with Mr. President, but what happened today was a charade organized by people passing themselves up as youth representatives, who in the reality were closet consultants to the President and his people." It was a different scenario when he got there. "It wasn't a conversation, the speakers had been pre-selected," he lamented. “This is the latest Nigeria youth scam on the block." But for some deliberate infusion of a few critical comments, the rest involved politically correct speeches and youth kissing up to GEJ, the participant said. Another commentator told SaharaReporters that they were disappointed by the speech made by Nollywood actress Rita Dominic, who couldn't stop thanking Jonathan profusely for giving $200 million to Nollywood stars. Another low for the event, according to another participant, was video footage of a British band called "Goodluck Jonathan" which had been shown to participants apparently to prove that Jonathan was a global icon who had inspired a foreign music band. The event which had originally been put up as “frugal” event of N70 million ended up costing over N150m as some youth participants spent three days at the super expensive Eko Hotel prior to it. Also, some participants were flown from the UK and US. The event’s arrowheads include Chude Jideonwo of the “Future Project” and Amara Nwankpa, the youth who led a "LightUp Nigeria" campaign. Some participants said they felt scammed by the “What About US” campaign when Jonathan failed to honor a youth debate. They felt disappointed that the leaders of the campaign turned around and involved themselves with the monumental wastage of scarce national resources at a time the value of the national currency is going down, fuel scarcity has returned and the electricity situation is getting worse. At the end of yesterday's event, which started at 12:30 and ended at 3pm, an announcement was made that participants would get reimbursement of their transport fare. That it turned to be a bribe fest as participants from Lagos were offered N50, 000 each while those from out of Lagos state were given N150, 000. “Some 400 youths were essentially bribed by Mr. President,” said a participant who claimed to have rejected the gratification. As expected the gratification of participants has ignited a fierce debate on Twitter and other social media channels |

In recent years, aluminum roofing has grown quickly in popularity because of the many advantages aluminum roofs offer to homeowners. Aluminum roofs are attractive, durable, energy-efficient, and increasingly affordable. In the past, aluminum was not a popular roofing material for cost reasons and because of concerns about the structural limitations of aluminum. Recent innovations have resolved the structural problems and decreased the cost of aluminium Benefits of Using Aluminum Roofing Aluminum is increasingly valued as a roofing material for many reasons. Aluminum is attractive and malleable and comes in a great variety of roofing types and designs, including standing seam, shake, shingle, tile, and slate. In many parts of the country, aluminum is offered in a wider range of gauges than steel. Aluminum can be formed into individual tiles or shingles or shaped into panels that mimic the look of shingles. It is also lightweight and easy to work with onsite, reducing labor costs for installation. Once installed, one of aluminum's most important advantages is its great durability. Aluminum roofing does not warp, crack, or burn and, unlike steel, it is extremely corrosion-resistant and does not rust-a significant advantage in coastal areas and areas with a great deal of precipitation or problems with acid rain. The Environmental Benefits of Aluminum Roofing Like other types of metal roofing, aluminum is also extremely energy-efficient. Studies have shown that metal roofs absorb 34% less heat than traditional asphalt shingles, reducing air-conditioning costs in summer, and, depending on the part of the country, homeowners who have switched to metal roofing have reported savings of up to 20% on heating and cooling bills. In addition, aluminum roofing is typically made up of 90% recycled material and is itself fully recyclable when necessary, making it one of the most environmentally sound building materials. Aluminium Roofing - Costs Now vs. Costs Later Aluminum's primary disadvantage is its cost. Aluminum's initial installation is more expensive than steel or more traditional roofing materials like wood or asphalt shingles. However, over its life cycle, aluminum has been shown to be extremely cost-efficient. Most traditional roofing materials must be replaced every 10-12 years. Aluminum roofing can last 50 years or more and is not subject to the corrosion problems of steel. If you install aluminum roofing, there is a very strong chance that you will never need to install a roof again. Disadvantages to Aluminum Roofs Aluminum is also less hail resistant than steel, especially on lower-grade roofs, but unlike some traditional roofing materials, it will not split or break. Finally, because of the recent rise in popularity of aluminum roofing, not all roofers are experienced with aluminum roofing installation. |

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. Jim and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act, she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news she said, "Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged; since you were able to respond rationally to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of another patient, I have concluded that your act displays that you have a sound mind, The bad news is, Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's dead." Edna replied, "He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?" |
A Benin high court has sentenced one Kalejaiye Ola to death by hanging for shooting to death one Paul Erimafa with his AK-47 service rifle on the 23rd of June 2003 at Central Road in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Roland Amaize who handed down the judgment on Monday, held that the action of Mr Ola, a police sergeant, was pre-meditated and not a case of accidental discharge as offered by the convict. He said the convict had initially reported a case of armed robbery against the deceased which was later discovered to be false, adding that there was no justification for the convict to have shot and killed the deceased who was harmless as at the time of the incident. Mr Amaize further held that there were contradictions in the convict's extra-judicial statement and his oral testimony in court. Overwhelming evidence According to him, there was evidence from the police doctor who performed a post-mortem on the corpse showing damaged urinary bladder and profuse bleeding which led to the death of the victim. The court held that the evidence of one of the expert prosecution witnesses on the handling of arms and ammunitions showed that AK-47 rifle was at the safety catche when the incident occurred. Mr Amaize also held that the evidence of another prosecution witness present at the scene of crime as at the time of the murder was not challenged. On the whole, the court held that the prosecution proved the case of murder against the convict beyond reasonable doubts as stated by law. Mr Amaize, therefore, sentenced the convicted Mr Ola to death by hanging under section 319 of the Criminal Code. |

A petition capable of kicking Andy Emmanuel Uba off his journey to the Senate has been filed at the National Assembly Election Tribunal in Awka, Anambra State. It asks the Tribunal to invalidate the election in the Anambra South Senatorial District and order a re-run as Mr. Uba was not qualified to have run for the Upper House in the first place. The petition, filed by Mr. Ikechukwu Obiorah, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, further alleges that the election was invalid by reason of corrupt practices and non-compliances with the provisions of the Electoral Act. He is asking the court to, among others: • Disqualify Mr. Uba for giving false information in his election application; • Set aside his election into the National Assembly for the Anambra South Senatorial District; • Set aside the certificate of return issued to Mr. Uba by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and • Order a fresh election for the Senate seat. Also joined in the suit are the PDP, INEC, Prof. Kelechi Greco Okoye (the INEC Returning Officer for the Senatorial District), and Mr. Nicholas Ukachukwu, who, it is alleged, participated in the election as a second candidate of the PDP. Mr. Obiorah alleges that Uba, the former presidential aide to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who was declared elected to the Senate in the April 9 election, tendered questionable documents to back his application to INEC to run for the seat. Drawing attention to Mr. Uba’s declaration that he attended tertiary institutions that include Concordia University Canada, and California State University, the petitioner claims that Mr. Uba could not have been admitted in those institutions of learning because he lacked the minimum entry requirement. The petitioner also challenges Mr. Uba’s declaration of a “Bachelor of Science (AWAITING) 1985 -1992” in his application, saying, “The 1st Respondent is presently not enrolled in any University to be expecting any Bachelor of Science twenty (20 )years after his last academic adventure.” The petition also asserts that Mr. Uba “not having completed any course of work necessary for the award of Bachelor of science patently gave false information when he claimed that he obtained Doctor of Science 1993 -1996.” The petitioner says, “There is no University known as Buxton University London, in London or anywhere else in the United Kingdom. (At the hearing of the Petition, the Petitioner shall rely on the report of Home City Ltd, a verification and Research service company which verified the authenticity of the said Buxton University.)” In 2006, a SaharaReporters investigation into Mr. Uba’s educational background showed he did not earn the Bachelor’s degree in Geology he claimed from Concordia University – a Canadian institution he said he attended from 1984. Official Concordia University records showed that he dropped out without completing the requirements for a Bachelor’s degree. The university’s alumni office of records said Concordia University had no record of Uba ever graduating from the school. SaharaReporters investigations found similar problems with his claim to a Master’s degree from California State University, the official records of which showed Mr. Uba did not earn a Masters from there. Our investigations confirmed that while he did enroll at the school for an undergraduate programme to study Geography between September 27, 1990 and March 21, 1992, he never graduated. We also looked into Mr. Uba’s claim to possessing a doctorate degree from Buxton University in the United Kingdom, which we declared to be “the worst of all” because in the absence of a first or a second degree, he could not have legitimately sought a doctorate degree. Buxton University, our investigation found, was only an unaccredited online degree awarding institution with an address in Portugal, and notoriety for awarding bogus degrees to clients willing to pay a set fee http://www.saharareporters.com/news-page/andy-ubas-fake-credentials-resurface-anambra-election-tribunal |
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, has asked a court to commit the Oyo State governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, and his attorney-general, Ladi Abdu-Salami, to prison over an alleged failure to obey court orders. The traditional ruler, in a suit filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Adeola Omotunde, said the duo have refused to honour two different court orders directing them to stop recognising one Ganiyu Ajiboye as the Alago-Oja of Ago-Oja. Mr Adeyemi also sought the imprisonment of Mr Ajiboye. According to Mr Adeyemi, during Mr Alao-Akala’s 11-month illegal stint as state governor in 2006, he installed Mr Ajiboye as a titled ruler of Ago-Oja, an area within the jurisdiction of the Alaafin. Mr Adeyemi therefore challenged the action and secured court orders to stop the state from recognising the Alago-Oja, describing his installation as illegal. In separate judgements, the Oyo state High Court and the Court of Appeal had directed that Mr Ajiboye not parade himself as the Alago-Oja any further and that the state stop recognising him as such. Delivering his judgement on February 19, 2007, in a suit number HOG/14/2006, an Oyo State High Court judge, O.A. Akinola, averred that “the creation, appointment and installation of Baale Ago Oja was illegal, null and void, unconstitutional” and ordered the occupant to vacate the official residence he was living in and stop parading himself as a traditional chief. The judge further declared the title of Baale Ago-Oja as “non-existent, illegal, unconstitutional, null and void”, and that the certificate of office issued Mr Ajiboye was “a worthless piece of paper”. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5703844-146/traditional_ruler_seeks_imprisonment_of_oyo.csp |
