In addition to regular cardiovascular exercise, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has also recommended a series of exercises that have been specifically chosen in order to help strengthen and condition the muscles that support the spinal column. These exercises can be done at home, and they do not require any special exercise equipment. The primary goals of an exercise program for your spine are to make the muscles of your back, stomach, hips and thighs strong and flexible. These exercises should be incorporated into an overall program of aerobic conditioning such as walking, bike riding, swimming, or jogging. Before beginning any exercise program, check with your doctor to make sure that there are no other medical considerations that would change your approach to the exercise program. If exercise is new to you, then consider working with a certified personal trainer who can help you develop an exercise program that will meet your goals. Low Back Exercise Guide: Regular exercises to restore the strength of your back and a gradual return to everyday activities are important for your full recovery. Your orthopaedic surgeon and physical therapist may recommend that you exercise 10 to 30 minutes a day one to three times a day during your early recovery. They may suggest some of the following exercises. This guide can help you better understand your exercise and activity program, supervised by your therapist and orthopaedic surgeon. Initial Exercise Program Ankle Pumps—Lie on your back. Move ankles up and down. Repeat 10 times. Abdominal Contraction—Lie on your back with knees bent and hands resting below ribs. By Citizen Reports These are not normal times for Bekee Anyalewechi, the Abia State, Nigeria- born editor-in-chief of The Neighbourhood, a Port Harcourt-based provincial newspaper. Is not unto a week when suspected militia of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) started threatening to eliminate the courageous and enterprising journalist over a story his paper had carried in its front page. The paper in its banner headline special report runs, “ How April 26 Election Was Rigged in Rivers State- Obio/Akpor, Eleme, Okrika, Ahoada East, Gokana, Degema Worst Affected –Court Actions Resume Soon “. May 6, page 2, 5. No sooner had the paper hits the newsstand than threatening calls started streaming in, to devour the vulnerable writer. The threats from Rivers State had barely evaporated when gory and irrational gangs allegedly loyal to Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, the governor of Akwa Ibom had threatened to gun him down, another story in the Anyalewechi’s tabloid, “ How Governor Akpabio Recruited Cultists from Rivers State for Governorship Election in Akwa Ibom “, The Neighbourhood , May 13, 2011, page 10. According to the local newspaper, Sunny Ishiba, an infamous armourer to Soboma George, the murdered leader of the Outlaws, a notorious secret and violent gang, was rented by Akpabio and drafted into the Ikot Ekpene axis of Akpabio’s state where the roving gangster who accepted the Federal Government presidential amnesty invaded Ikot Umuoessien, one of the Annang communities and killed 5 persons on the eve of the election. Ishiba, who had abandoned his private residence the Borokiri area, south of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital currently resides in government house in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital . @baby.me you're absolutely right. |
Your child's rude 'tude isn't always intentional. Sometimes kids just don't realize it's impolite to interrupt, pick their nose, or loudly observe that the lady walking in front of them has a large behind. And in the hustle and bustle of daily life, busy moms and dads don't always have the time to focus on etiquette. But if you reinforce these 25 must-do manners, you'll raise a polite, kind, well-liked child.- Manner #1 When asking for something, say "Please." Manner #2 When receiving something, say "Thank you." Manner #3 Do not interrupt grown-ups who are speaking with each other unless there is an emergency. They will notice you and respond when they are finished talking. Manner #4 If you do need to get somebody's attention right away, the phrase "excuse me" is the most polite way for you to enter the conversation. Manner #5 When you have any doubt about doing something, ask permission first. It can save you from many hours of grief later. Manner #6 The world is not interested in what you dislike. Keep negative opinions to yourself, or between you and your friends, and out of earshot of adults. Manner #7 Do not comment on other people's physical characteristics unless, of course, it's to compliment them, which is always welcome. Manner #8 When people ask you how you are, tell them and then ask them how they are. Manner #9 When you have spent time at your friend's house, remember to thank his or her parents for having you over and for the good time you had. Manner #10 Knock on closed doors -- and wait to see if there's a response -- before entering. Manner #11 When you make a phone call, introduce yourself first and then ask if you can speak with the person you are calling. Manner #12 Be appreciative and say "thank you" for any gift you receive. In the age of e-mail, a handwritten thank-you note can have a powerful effect. Manner #13 Never use foul language in front of adults. Grown-ups already know all those words, and they find them boring and unpleasant. Manner #14 Don't call people mean names. Manner #15 Do not make fun of anyone for any reason. Teasing shows others you are weak, and ganging up on someone else is cruel. Manner #16 Even if a play or an assembly is boring, sit through it quietly and pretend that you are interested. The performers and presenters are doing their best. Manner #17 If you bump into somebody, immediately say "Excuse me." Manner #18 Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and don't pick your nose in public. Manner #19 As you walk through a door, look to see if you can hold it open for someone else. Manner #20 If you come across a parent, a teacher, or a neighbor working on something, ask if you can help. If they say "yes," do so -- you may learn something new. Manner #21 When an adult asks you for a favor, do it without grumbling and with a smile. Manner #22 When someone helps you, say "thank you." That person will likely want to help you again. This is especially true with teachers! Manner #23 Use eating utensils properly. If you are unsure how to do so, ask your parents to teach you or watch what adults do. Manner #24 Keep a napkin on your lap; use it to wipe your mouth when necessary. Manner #25 Don't reach for things at the table; ask to have them passed |
Sleep deprivation makes the day drag and appears to put a drag on metabolism too, causing the body to use less energy, according to a European study. The results, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, add to evidence that sleep loss can promote weight gain -- not just by boosting hunger but also by slowing the rate at which calories are burned. The study suggests that getting plenty of sleep might prevent weight gain, said Christian Benedict of Uppsala University in Sweden, who led the study. "Our findings show that one night of sleep deprivation acutely reduces energy expenditure in healthy men, which suggests sleep contributes to the acute regulation of daytime energy expenditure in humans," he wrote. Previous studies have linked sleep deprivation with weight gain and also shown how disrupted sleep also disrupts levels of stress- and hunger-related hormones during waking hours. To help identify the exact mechanisms by which a lack of sleep might have these effects, Benedict and his colleagues put 14 male university students through a series of sleep "conditions" -- curtailed sleep, no sleep, and normal sleep -- over several days, then measured changes in how much they ate, their blood sugar, hormone levels and indicators of their metabolic rate. They found that even a single night of missed sleep slowed metabolism the next morning, reducing energy expenditure for tasks like breathing and digestion by 5 percent to 20 percent, compared with the morning after a good night's sleep. The young men also had higher morning levels of blood sugar, appetite-regulating hormones such as ghrelin, and stress hormones such as cortisol after sleep disruption. Still, the sleep loss did not boost the amount of food the men consumed during the day. A number of studies have observed that people who sleep five hours or less are more prone to weight gain and weigh-related diseases such as type-2 diabetes. But those studies do not prove that sleep loss causes weight gain. Experts said that factors such as lifestyle and diet might add to obesity risks and that it was not clear that sleep deprivation led to obesity. Sanford Auerbach, head of the Sleep Disorders Center at Boston Medical Center, noted that sleep deprivation is a complex issue, with medication and other issues influencing sleep as well, and urged that the new findings be kept in context. "They showed that we adapt to sleep deprivation and that some of these adaptations could theoretically contribute to obesity," he said, adding that it's not clear how chronic sleep loss influences hormone levels. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults get about seven to nine hours of sleep each night. New York Times

You may not know it,but the roof contractor plays a key role in how long your house lasts.A major flaw in your roof can lead to disaster. How so? Let's start by outlining the different types of roofing common in Lagos Nigeria. This gives you the big picture. Then we conclude with tips for selection of roofing contractor. The different types of roofing include . . . • Metal roofing using zinc roofing sheets • Aluminium roofing using aluminium roofing sheets • Concrete roofing or decking • Asbestors roofing using asbestors roofing sheets These are the common roofing types in Lagos Nigeria. The first three - using zinc, aluminium, or asbestos roofing sheets - all follow the same pattern. The only difference is the roofing material used. The fourth - concrete roofing or decking - is different because it involves concrete work. Concrete roofing is often done when you intend to add another floor to the basic ground floor of a house. However, some home owners do partial or full concrete roofing using a roof contractor when they intend to use the house roof as a relaxation sport. Partial concrete roofing is often done for the kitchen alone to minimize the impact of fire from the kitchen if it does occur. Full or partial concrete roofing for the purpose of creating a relaxation area on the roof of the house may also call for sheet roofing of the top area of the house to shield against the impact of the sun during usage of the area. A mistake by a roof contractor for roofing with zinc, aluminium, or asbestos roofing sheet can always be corrected later with minimum impact on your home. But a flaw in your decking can lead to a collapse of the decking and in fact, the building a decade or two down the road. Therefore you need to be especially careful in this area. So here are some roof contractor selection Tips in Lagos Nigeria 1.What experience does he have with roofing jobs? What sort of roofing is he good at 2.Ask for specific roofing jobs he has done before. Let him show you a sample roofing job…one of the homes he has roofed. 3.Get the proof of job done.Speak to the owner of the home he claimed to have roofed.can the owner recommend him? 4.Cases of collapsed buildings have become a common feature in Lagos Nigeria. Don't let your building be the next to go down in history as collapsed. Be careful with the roof contractor you choose. Culled from: www.lagos-nigeria-real-estate-advisor.com |
A chieftain of the ACN in Benue Charles Ayede was on the 14th of may gunned down by suspected assassins. Ayeded and the Benue ACN governorship candidate in the just concluded elections, Professor Steve Ugbah were on their way to Makurdi. The shooting also injured one of Professor Ugbah's strong supporter, Mr Adaa Maagbe. Assailants opened fire on the team near Kadarko in Nasawara state, 25 minutes away from Makurdi the Benue state capital. Eyewitness reports said Ayede and Mr Maagbe were riding ahead of Prof. Ugbah when the assassins accosted and killed Ayede. Mr Ayede died on the spot, while Maagbe got shot in the hand. Mr Maagbe ran into the bush when their car came to a stop and immediately told Prof Ugbah to make a detour back to Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State. From the nature of the attack, it was clear the assailants were out to kill Prof. Ugbah. It is widely believed that the ACN candidate clearly defeated Governor Gabriel Suswam in the April 26th Gubernatorial elections, but Suswam characteristically connived with cahoots David Mark, the current Nigerian Senate president and dubious Independent National Electoral Commission officials led by Nasir Ayinlara to declare the election in the governor's favour of Suswam. The scale of rigging by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the Benue election was so widespread that political observers noted it would not take tribunal judges more than a few days to toss Governor Suswam out of power. Early in the week, the ACN Chairman in Benue, Comrade Abba Yaro was physically attacked by PDP thugs who visited him to demand that he turn in all the evidence the party had against the PDP to them. Abba Yaro is still receiving treatment for machete cuts at an undisclosed hospital in the state. Also, last week a lawyer on the Action Congress of Nigeria legal team in the state had gone to one of the local governments to gather evidence for use at the tribunal and no sooner had he returned than it was discovered he had been poisoned. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Makurdi run by the one of the Governor's strong supporters. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival . Since indicating interest for the office of Governor in 2007, no fewer than 5 high profile persons in Benue have succumbed to suspicious deaths believed to the handiwork of Suswam and his deadly gangs. In 2007, a former Minister of Police Affairs under Obasanjo, Mr Stephen Ibn Akiga was poisoned to death after declaring interest in running for governor. He was Obasanjo's preferred candidate for that position in Benue State. His death believed to be masterminded by Suswam, paved the way for his emergence as PDP candidate in 2007. In 2009, a fiery priest whom had preached about the governor's swine fraud for which he (Suswam) was reportedly arrested for in the USA was attacked and killed by thugs loyal to the governor. Last year, Mr Jonathan Biam, an ANPP candidate and formidable challenger to Suswam's re-election bid, died under mysterious circumstances shortly after picking up his form to run for the governorship race. The attempt on Professor Steve ugbah's life today was aimed ending his formidable resolve to upturn the governor's "victory" at the tribunal. Governor Suswam has intense fear for election petitions tribunals and tries very hard avoid any form of electoral judicial scrutiny. In 2003 after losing his reelection bid to the House of Reps to late Mahmud Akiga, he used physical inducements for Mahmud to withdraw the case against him. Elder brother to Mahmud, Stephen Akiga, whom Suswam later poisoned to death, prevailed on his younger brother to give up the case. In 2007, Senator Daniel Saror of the ANPP again loudly defeated Gabriel Suswam at the governorship polls, but Maurice Iwu fraudulently awarded victory to the former congressman. Saror, sure of his mandate had dragged the governor to court, until veiled threats from a corrupt Tiv Monarch, Tor Tiv Akawe Torkula, got Saror to pull out of the case. Terver Kakih, governor Suswam's challenger in the 2011 PDP primaries had been beaten too and almost killed on the same road where the assassins struck today. Mr. Kakih dragged the governor to court for certificate forgery. The case is ongoing. Critics say it is the fear of yet another elections petitions tribunal that has gotten the Benue governor to put his gang of killers back on the road again. |

A former minister of works and housing, Hassan Lawal, yesterday asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to order his release from prison custody, pleading that he will not jump bail if granted. Mr Lawal and 15 others were on Wednesday arraigned before an Abuja court presided over by Belikisu Aliyu, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 25-count charge bordering on fraudulent award of contracts, money laundering and embezzlement of about N75.5 billion belonging to the federal government. But counsel to Mr Lawal, in his application for bail yesterday, said his client has not been able to make any calls since the time of his arrest and has lost his goodwill and relationships. “He was arrested and detained while going about his business lawfully,” M.A. Magarji said. Mr Magarji, who filed the bail application pursuant to section 35(4) and 36 of the 1999 constitution, further pleaded that the minister will not jump bail if granted bail and will not tamper with already concluded investigation. “It is important to state that the 1st Accused/Applicant has been invited on several occasions by the EFCC and has always honoured the invitation,” he said. “Even while in EFCC bail, he was invited for further interrogation through phone calls and he still honoured the invitation. “At the last invitation of the complainant, the 1st accused person elected to honour the invitation and soon thereafter was detained in the custody of the Complainant/Respondent before being arraigned. It is our argument that a person who has contributed his own quota would not jump bail and will always be available to take his trial.” Health grounds He said the minister suffers from kidney ailment and has recently developed a cardio-vascular ailment, of which he needs constant medication and needs to be managed by his medical doctors. “It is also important to submit respectively that the health of the 1st accused has deteriorated since his detention by the EFCC,” he said. Mr Lawal and 15 others docked along with him by the EFCC pleaded not guilty to the charges read to them on Wednesday. The counsel to the EFCC, Wahab Shittu, asked the court to remand them in prison custody pending the commencement of trial. The judge agreed, and ordered that the accused persons be remanded in Kuje Prison till a formal application for bail is brought before the court and adjourned the case till June 6th for definite hearing. Mr Lawal, who was appointed Minister of Works and Housing by late President Umaru Yar’Adua in 2007, also served as Minister of Labour and Productivity in the cabinet of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/5699825-147/story.csp |
