The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan zonal office on Tuesday, arrested three suspected internet fraudsters.

The commission also on Tuesday arrested two others found in possession of double-barrel gun.

the suspects were picked up at Ologuneru and Olodo areas of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

They were nabbed after days of surveillance mounted on them to test the veracity of allegations of fraudulent activities and flamboyant life without tangible source of income leveled against them in series of petitions authored by their neighbours.

A 41-year-old man, Sunday Ngwu, has allegedly beaten his wife to death over an undisclosed marital issue at Ibollo in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The suspect, a native of Nkanu Local Government Area of Enugu State, reportedly engaged his wife in a fight on Monday night.

The Nation gathered that the suspect and his late wife, Amara, had been living peacefully in an apartment on Ikwo Street before the incident happened.

A neighbour, who pleaded for anonymity, said a fight broke out between them after a heated argument, during which the suspect thoroughly beat her up.

Prof. Wole Soyinka has lambasted individuals trying to reduce the worth of the June 12, 1993, presidential election struggle by rubbing it in ethnic garb.

He noted that the eventual celebration of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day meant closure for him and many others involved in the struggle to actualize the 1993 mandate.

He added, “A resolution that I first half-seriously injected into encounters over five years ago. That absence applies, not to the official celebration alone – of which I have never been a part anyway – but to the annual ritual by civic groups, a ritual of both tributes and defiance that has been unflaggingly observed till now.

“Regarding the earlier Abuja ceremony that signalled the state’s reversion to June 12 as the most truthful expression of a people’s democratic will, I did attend, even at the cost of breaking a journey on the way to Brazil. That event, for some of us, represented closure – at least substantially.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has endorsed former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume and Hon Umar Bago for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.

The PDP in a statement by its National Secretary, Senator Umar Tsauri, on Tuesday morning, said the party leadership took the decision after an extensive consultation with its stakeholders.

LAGOS—President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has said the poor performance of the country’s power sector was hindering growth of the economy. Dangote spoke at a consultative roundtable session for public and private sector stakeholders organised by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in Lagos, weekend.
According to Dangote, Nigeria had been struggling to increase its electricity output for the past 18 years without success. Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos state police command, in the early hours of today, rescued a drunk man found unconscious on the road along Awolowo Way, Ikeja.
The operatives who were on a patrol, immediately rushed the man to their ambulance where it was discovered he was intoxicated, and was revived after some hours. He then took the officers to Fela’s Shrine in the Alausa Business District, Ikeja where he had parked his car.
He claimed not knowing how he “wandered” away from where it was parked.

Some yet-to-be identified hoodlums early on Saturday morning invaded the residence of the immediate past governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha.

One of our correspondents gathered that the armed hoodlums invaded the residence, located at his country home in Ogboko, Ideato South Local Government Area of the state barely 72 hours after Okorocha left office as governor.
The hoodlums were said to have overpowered the security guards at the residence and forced their way in.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is set to arraign an official of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, Philomina Chieshe, over the missing N35m in her custody, which she said was swallowed by a snake in Makurdi, Benue State.

A 3-year-old girl who was stolen alongside her sister, Amanda, in June 2018, by two female tenants of their father in Utesi, Edo State, has finally been recovered by the police.

Christabel Omokpia was found in Enugu State after being sold for N850,000 by an orphanage in Rivers State. .

Their mother, Faith, had left them in the care of the tenants, Mary and Rose, who disappeared with them. Christabel was first sold for N450,000 by the tenants and she was later sold for N500,000 to one Ogechi Favour. .

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Algeria and Argentina are now free of malaria. This means that there has not been a single case of anyone catching the disease in either country over the past three years. .

Algeria is the second country in Africa to be officially recognised as malaria-free, after Mauritius, which was certified in 1973, the WHO says. It puts the success down to work “ensuring no-one was left behind in getting the services they needed to prevent, detect and cure the disease”. .

Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said the people must not demand the presidency slot in 2023 for refusing to back APC.

Ameachi while speaking in an interview with The Sun, attributed this to the fact that the Igbo have nothing to bring to the table in 2023. He said: “I don’t know what they will do now for voting against the APC.

For refusing to support the APC, they cannot come to the table to demand the presidency slot.

The Nigeria Labour Congress and some civil society organisations have advised the Federal Government to delay the disbursement of the N649bn Paris Club refund to states until after the inauguration of incoming governors on May 29.

The advice followed the disclosure by the Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, on Thursday that the Federal Government was set to disburse the outstanding N649.434bn to states. Speaking at a press conference on the activities of her ministry, Ahmed said the money was the last tranche of the refund.

She said, “For the final phase of the Paris Club debt refund, the total sum of N649.434bn was verified by the ministry as the outstanding balance to be refunded state governments.

“The payments made by the Central Bank of Nigeria as of March 2019 is N691.56bn. The increase in CBN payments partly arose from the exchange rate differential at the point of payment. Although some states still have outstanding balances, they will be refunded in due course.”

But reacting to the development, the President of the NLC, Mr Ayuba Wabba, told our correspondent on Friday that the union’s recommendation to the Federal Government would be to delay the disbursement of the money till after May 29, when the newly elected governors would have been sworn in. He said the reasons border on accountability and the manner the previous refunds were used by some governors.

APC has filed a motion at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja that the candidate of PDP in the February 23, 2019 Presidential Election, Atiku Abubakar, is not a Nigerian and therefore not qualified to have stood for the election, Channels TV reports.

The Party claimed that the former Vice President is a Cameroonian and not a Nigerian citizen and his petition against President Buhari, should be dismissed for lacking in merit.

In a reply to the petition of Atiku and the PDP, praying for their declaration as the lawful winner of the presidential poll, the APC said that the 11.1 million votes recorded in favor of the two petitioners should be voided and considered a waste by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

The APC’s reply to the petition, filed by its lead counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, faulted the candidacy of Atiku in the election insisting that as a Cameroonian, he ought not to have taken part in the presidential poll of Nigeria in the first instance.



The Party averred that Atiku was born on November 25, 1946, in Jada, Adamawa, in Northern Cameroon and is, therefore, a citizen of Cameroon and not a Nigerian by birth.

Atiku had in his petition, faulted the conduct of the February 23 Presidential Election, on the ground of non-compliance with relevance electoral laws and other malpractices such as intimidation of voters, the unlawful arrest of his sympathizers and the harassment by soldiers and other law enforcement of those wishing to vote for him.

The party, therefore, prayed the tribunal to uphold the victory of its candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, who polled 15,191,347 to emerge the winner and his subsequent declaration as president-elect by INEC while also urging that the petition against the victory should be dismissed for having no cause of action. No date has been fixed for the hearing of the petition

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who stated the government position at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, also condemned the resurgence of posters bearing the picture of Atiku, with the inscription: “THE PUKKA, H.E. ATIKU ABUBAKAR, THE REAL AND THE RIGHT,” which have surfaced across major streets in Abuja.

“The appearance of these posters coincide with the media report that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has hired a US lobbying firm to convince the United States not to recognise the re-election of President Buhari until the Supreme Court has ruled on the suit by the PDP presidential candidate,” the minister said.

He said, “Yes, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has lost an election. But he will not be the first or the last person to lose an election, and he should realise that losing an election is not the end of the world.



“He has challenged the result of the election in court. That’s just as well. However, he should not give the impression that he does not have confidence in the judicial process, which his resorting to self-help implies.

“He should stop overheating the polity and quit trying to instigate a political crisis in Nigeria. No citizen, no matter how highly placed, is above the laws of the land. Enough is enough.”

Mohammed, who was flanked at the briefing by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the posters and the alleged hiring of the US lobbyists, had triggered questions about what Alhaji Abubakar was up to.

The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to some media reports insinuating that the recent air strikes conducted by its Air Task Force for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA killed only innocent civilians in the areas attacked and not bandits.

The NAF finds such reports rather ridiculous because most of the locations attacked are within the Rugu, Sububu and Kagara Forests general area, which are known armed bandits hideouts that have been attacked in the past, without any outcry.

Besides, the NAF target selection process for air operations is particularly rigorous and methodical in order to ensure proper target identification and thereby prevent strikes on wrong locations.

For the avoidance of doubts, the public is to please note that the locations attacked from 8 to 11 April 2019 were selected based on human intelligence (HUMINT) reports obtained from security agencies and other government sources, traditional and community leaders as well as reliable, vetted informants.



These were all further confirmed by days of detailed day and night Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions to ensure proper targeting for avoidance of collateral damage.

To further ensure this, as standard practice, NAF attack aircraft on air interdiction missions are accompanied by ISR platforms that guide them to designated targets. Furthermore, NAF pilots, by training and in line with extant Rules of Engagement (ROEs) for the operation, do not attack any location if it is observed that non-combatants, especially women and children, are present.

The trial of Tuoyo Omatsuli, a former Executive Director on Projects, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and Francis Momoh continued on April 11, 2019 before Justice Saliu Seidu of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, with a prosecution witness, Peter Ademola, revealing how the defendants laundered overN29 million belonging to the Commission through a private company.

The defendants, who were charged alongside their companies, Don Parker Properties Limited and Building Associates Limited respectively, were arraigned on November 10, 2018, on a 45-count charge bordering on conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of N3,645,000,000 (Three Billion, Six Hundred and Forty-Five Million Naira).

They pleaded “not guilty” to the charges preferred against them and were subsequently granted bail on November 16, 2018 in the sum of N100 million each with two sureties in like sum.

At the resumed hearing, Ademola, a Compliance Officer with Fidelity Bank Plc,testifying as the second prosecution witness, revealed how billions of Naira were moved from the NDDC and transferred to a private company, Starline Consultancy Services Limited.

Ademola, who was led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, said: “As a Compliance Officer in Fidelity Bank, I received a letter from the EFCC on July 3, 2014, requesting for the account openingdocuments, statements of account and tickets of transactions of Starline Consultancy Services Limited, which I obliged the Commission.



“According to the account opening package, one Ibinabo Michael West was the sole signatory to the account of Starline Consultancy Services Limited.

“Also, according to the transactions of Starline Consultancy Services Limited with Fidelity Bank, from August, 2014 to March, 2015, it received transferred funds from the NDDC totalling N3.6billion.

“Debit transactions were made to Building Associates in the total sum of N3.2billion.”
