The Peoples Democratic Party stirred up yet another controversy online after it said President Goodluck Jonathan could be regarded as the “Mandela of Nigeria”. Although the party initially declared the first President of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, as the “Mandela of Nigeria,” it went on to say that Jonathan follows the late nationalist ‘closely’ in order of ranking. A close observation shows that Jonathan topped the list of living past and present Nigerian leaders, which is posted on the PDP Facebook page. The ruling party said its judgement was based on the result of online votes by its loyal Facebook followers numbering about 26, 500. In a message posted on its Facebook page, the PDP noted that the outcome of the voting process, which lasted 24 hours, was “decidedly” transparent. “Great fans, after 24 hours of voting, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe is decidedly – by the strength of your vote – the ‘Mandela of Nigeria’. He is followed closely by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,” the message reads. The party ranked the first Premier of the Northern Region, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello; the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo; former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions, respectively, on the same list. The late President Umar Yar’Adua; the late Prof. Chinua Achebe; former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, came next in the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth positions, respectively. However, many Nigerians practically invaded the party’s Facebook page to register their displeasure with the PDP over the list. While many of the protesters noted that the country lacked real leaders that can be compared with Nelson Mandela, others said Jonathan could not have emerged as the runner-up in any transparent ranking. They accused the PDP of manipulating the voting process as against the opinion of a truly representative proportion of the populace. A cross section of those angered by the ranking also accused the party of using the death of Mandela as a tool for self-promotion. A visitor to the PDP Facebook page, Imoh Okon, urged the party not to soil the image of the departed South African leader with its deceitful ‘Mandela of Nigeria’ project. “Mandela fought to restore human integrity. In your (PDP) case, what is your goal? Is it tribalism or regional relevance or party supremacy? The least honour you could give Madiba is to keep his name away from this deceit. The PDP can surely do better than this by getting right thinking minds to maintain this page with some sensible packaging,” he wrote. Another respondent, Bello Kolawole, described the list in its current form as the “joke of the century”. Kolawole said it was unfortunate that eminent Nigerians like the late human rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi and the late environmental activist, Ken Saro Wiwa, could be pushed aside in preference for the President. “This must be the joke of the century. Nobody made Mandela a hero. His goodwill and struggle for the emancipation of his people wrote his name in world’s history books. We do not have his likes in Nigeria,” he said. Obviously irritated, Ibrahim Abdullah wrote, “The online poll must have been rigged as a tradition of the PDP. I stand to remain the last Nigerian to believe Goodluck Jonathan is Nigeria’s Nelson Mandela. This is impersonation, nothing more!” Summing up the opinion of dozens of other people who lambasted the PDP for the ranking, Eghweree Ovie said, “None of the so-called leaders have made sacrifices for Nigeria, compared to what they have benefited from Nigeria. “The PDP should please stop this nonsense analysis or comparison. Nigeria does not have Mandela or his like. What we have are the name that you just listed. Imagine you adding Goodluck Jonathan to the list. Even the Ijaw won’t consider him as their Mandela. The Mandela of Nigeria are the citizens who forgive those embezzling the public funds.” http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/pdp-names-azikiwe-jonathan-in-mandela-of-nigeria-list/

After five months and 10 days that the public universities have been on strike, the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday finally signed a fresh agreement. The fresh pact is the review of the Federal Government/ASUU 2012 Memorandum of Understanding reached on the 2009 agreement. Both parties, however, refused to reveal the details of the agreement to journalists who witnessed the signing of the agreement. The meeting was almost boycotted by the union until the intervention of stakeholders. ASUU had on Tuesday vowed not to attend the meeting because there was no commitment and proper invitation from the government. The union had demanded for proof of the payment of the N200bn into a Central Bank of Nigeria account for public universities, non-victimisation clause, review of the agreement in 2014 and that a representative of government, preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation to sign the agreement as conditions to call off the strike which began on July 1. Our correspondent, however, gathered that the union got three of its demands while it relinquished one to the government. The Federal Government agreed to present evidence of payment, implement the non-victimisation clause and that the agreement was open to re-negotiation in 2014. But it was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, MacJohn Nwaobiala, who signed the agreement on behalf of the government contrary to the demand of the union. ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Faggae, signed on behalf of the union while the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwaheed Omar, signed as a witness to the agreement. The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, who presided over the meeting, said there was “no victor no vanquished” in the dispute. He said the Federal Government was alive to its responsibility to restore normalcy to the university system. Wike argued that government only directed the vice-chancellors of federal universities to immediately reopen the universities for academic activities pending when other minor discrepancies would be sorted out. “Today, I am very pleased to announce that all contending issues between ASUU and the Federal Government have been resolved to the satisfaction of the parties. “Let me emphasise that we recognise and appreciate ASUU’s patriotic role and commitment towards ensuring that our universities are well-funded, resourced and run like their counterparts in other parts of the world. “Thus, we are all partners in progress and there is no victor; no vanquished in the struggle of this nature for as long as our goals remain noble, not actuated by parochial interests, but targeted at moving our nation forward.” The minister on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan thanked Nigerians, the National Assembly, the labour unions, traditional rulers, parents and students for showing understanding. In his response, Faggae commended the President for his intervention in the dispute. He, however, stressed that the strike could not have lingered if government had agreed to document the agreement reached with the union. “If what we have agreed with Mr. President at that 13-hour meeting had been judiciously documented and our members were convinced that it was going to be implemented, we wouldn’t have waited this while because we also have a lot of respect for the office of Mr. President and that of the Vice-President. “But you see our members are intellectuals, I keep saying this. It is simply because over the years particularly since the signing of the 2009 agreement we have been pursuing government to get that agreement implemented. “We rarely succeeded in getting a portion of that agreement implemented by the government. Here we are, we have gone for about four years but it is never too late to turn a new page and make sure we do what is right with our universities.” Faggae said the country must place high premium on education if it hoped to catch up with developed world. Faggae who said the decision to call-off the strike lied with the National Executive Council of the union, promised that the message would be delivered within one week for a final decision on the strike. “We would now take this document to our members and we are confident that our members will do the appropriate thing. “It was a sacrifice that was worth taking to ensure that we do what is right for our country,” he added. In an interview, Faggae said ASUU would make its position known to government “within one week." source: www.punch.ng/news/fg-ASUU-sign-agreement-varsities-to-reopen-soon

Thousands cheered on Tuesday when United States President Barrack Obama took to the podium to address the crowd at the memorial for former South African President Nelson Mandela. The same goodwill was however not extended to the incumbent South African President Jacob Zuma when he gave his keynote and closing addresses. President Goodluck Jonathan and about 90 world leaders, in addition to other celebrities defying the pouring rain, had gathered at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, to pay their respects to the anti-apartheid hero. Praise came from all sides in the four hour memorial service for Mandela, who died last Thursday at age 95. Describing Mandela as the great liberator of the 20th century, Obama said, “It is hard to eulogise any man – to capture in words not just the facts and the dates that make a life, but the essential truth of a person. How much harder to do so for a giant of history, who moved a nation toward justice, and in the process moved billions around the world. “Born during World War I, far from the corridors of power, a boy raised herding cattle and tutored by elders of his Thembu tribe – Madiba would emerge as the last great liberator of the 20th century. “Like Gandhi, he would lead a resistance movement — a movement that at its start held little prospect of success. Like King, he would give potent voice to the claims of the oppressed, and the moral necessity of racial justice. He would endure a brutal imprisonment that began in the time of Kennedy and Khrushchev, and reached the final days of the Cold War.” Obama also took a swipe at countries where he considered democracy was not being encouraged. He said, “There are too many leaders who claim solidarity with Madiba’s struggle for freedom, but do not tolerate dissent from their own people. And there are too many of us who stand on the sidelines, comfortable in complacency or cynicism when our voices must be heard. “The questions we face today – how to promote equality and justice; to uphold freedom and human rights; to end conflict and sectarian war — do not have easy answers. But there were no easy answers in front of that child in Qunu.” Obama, Castro shake hands In keeping with Mandela’s spirit of reconciliation, Obama shook hands with Cuba’s Raul Castro at the memorial It was an unprecedented gesture between the leaders of two nations that have been at loggerheads for more than half a century. The only previous known handshake between U.S. and Cuban presidents since the island’s 1959 revolution was at the United Nations in 2000, when Raul’s brother, Fidel, shook the hand of ex-US president Bill Clinton in a chance encounter. Zuma described Mandela as one of a kind, a fearless freedom fighter, who refused to allow the brutality of the apartheid state to stand in way of the struggle for the liberation of his people. He also announced the renaming of the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where Mandela will lie in state, as the Mandela Amphitheatre. There were boos from the crowd as Zuma gave his speech and many also gave the thumbs down sign or rolled their wrists in a soccer substitution gesture – expressing their dissatisfaction with South African’s third democratically elected president. Castro also paid tribute to Mandela as the ultimate symbol of dignity and the revolutionary struggle. Under his brother, Fidel, Cuba was a staunch critic of apartheid, and Mandela had expressed gratitude for that support source: www.punch.ng/news/crowd-boos-zuma-cheers-obama-at-memorial

There was anxiety over the state of health of a teacher at the Osogbo Grammar School, Osun State, identified simply as Mr. Olamoyegun, on Thursday as a pupil of the Government Technical College in the town attacked him with a machete Although what led to the attack on the teacher was still sketchy, our correspondent, however, gathered that the pupil pulled a surprise attack on the teacher, making it impossible for him to defend himself. Some pupils of the OGS told our correspondent that the attacker, whose name had yet to be identified, attacked the teacher from the back and inflicted a deep cut on his head with the cutlass. One of the OGS pupils, whose name is withheld for security purpose, said, “I think the person that attacked Mr. Olamoyegun is a cultist. That is what everybody is saying here because he just sneaked behind our teacher and attacked him with the cutlass in his hand. He did not give Mr. Olamoyegun the chance to defend himself. “Now, everybody is worried because nobody knows whether our teacher survived the attack.” PUNCH Metro, however, learnt that Olamoyegun was rushed to the Government House Clinic from where he was referred to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. Some of his colleagues in the school said he had been responding to treatment. But when the Principal of Osogbo Grammar School, Mr. A. O. Akinlusi, was contacted on the telephone, he declined comment. He said, “Go to Dada Estate Police Station. Members of the group involved are in police custody.” The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, promised to find out what actually happened and call our correspondent back. She, however, had not done this as of the time of going to the press. But the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, Mr. Ayo Olowe, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone. Olowe said, “The teacher has been treated and he is now okay. The situation is calm now.” A similar incident happened at St. Mark Grammar School, Osogbo on Wednesday where a pupil was reportedly stabbed by one of his mates. Although there was apprehension in the school over the condition of the pupil, he was said to have survived the attack. There has been growing incidences of violent attack in secondary schools in the state following the merger of schools in the new education policy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola. There was a violent clash at Baptist Girls High School, Osogbo about three weeks ago as some suspected cult members in the school engaged in a bloody clash with a rival cult group from another secondary school. The Principal of Baptist High School, Ejigbo, Mr. Layi Oguntola, was also attacked last week by some Muslim youths, who invaded the school over the allegation that he sent a pupil wearing Hijab, a scarf for Muslim women, away from the school. Oguntola has debunked the claim, saying he merely caned the female pupil because she was unruly. Source: http:// www.punchng.com/ metro/ anxiety- as-pupil -attacks-teache r-with-machete/ |
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has impounded a 40-feet container laden with fake packaging materials for various brands of cosmetics. PUNCH Metrolearnt that the consignment was registered as Bibles, but when the container was searched, the fake goods were found. Director-General of the agency, Dr. Paul Orhii, said the seizure was evidence that counterfeiters were beginning to change their strategies. He said, “On November 26, 2013, NAFDAC officers at SCOA Port Terminal, Lagos State, intercepted a 40-feet container of Bibles, electrical materials, plumbing items and flower vase. But on inspection, it was discovered to be 58 cartons of concealed printed plastic packaging materials for various brands of cosmetics. “The importer, John Dike Ventures, imported empty printed plastic containers for beauty fair cream, body care lotion, skin beauty and air freshener with the intention of faking the original products which were registered by NAFDAC for other companies. “The market value of the consignment is estimated to be N5.6m. If you want to fake cosmetics and you use the Bible to conceal it, definitely, God will expose you.” Meanwhile, the agency also arrested a Lebanese national for the sale and distribution of various range of unregistered cosmetic products. Orhii said the suspect, Haider Saleh, was arrested at the Trade Fair Complex, Lagos State, following a tip off. He said, “Operatives of NAFDAC raided Kamthak Ventures Limited warehouse at Atiku Abubakar Hall, Trade Fair Complex. We recovered 853 cartons of Smart Collections spray, 1004 cartons of Pearl Beauty Soap, 531 cartons of Wright Traditional Soap, 490 cartons of Cidal Antiseptic Soap, 12 cartons of Dove range of beauty soaps. “Also, 1099 cartons of Vaseline, 140 rolls of Sure Cool Pink, 151 cartons of Tango Water Renyah, 253 packets of Smart Collection perfume and 253 packets of Sure. Meanwhile, one Ikechukwu Okafor, who claimed to be the import manager, was also interrogated and the products are being sampled for analysis.” Orhii, who called for stiffer penalties for drug counterfeiters, urged members of the public to continue to provide the agency with information that would lead to more arrests. N.b- my own view on the issue is that why must all business trasaction be suspended in the whole town for 7days because of the demise of the deji? I think the tradition should be review. |
I dont know if this is the right section to place this, but presently now at oba adesida road there is a clash between isolo boys and the palace boys, this is as a result of some people in isolo area carrying out their business activities as against the akure tradition that all markets and shop should be close for 7days whenever the king pass on. Now the security men are in control of the violence. Deji's Demise - Pandemonium Over Closure of Shops 4 December 2013, By Dayo Johnson, Source: Vanguard Akure THE age long rivalry between the Akure and Isolo quarters, both in Akure metropolis in Ondo State, reverberated yesterday as their youths engaged themselves in a bloody clash over the closure of shops as final respect to the late paramount ruler of Akureland, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, who died on Sunday. At least 10 persons were seriously injured just as the state police command deployed Armoured Personnel Carrier, APC, and policemen to quell the violence. The Isolo and Isinkan quarters, which are within Akure metropolis, have for long been fighting for autonomy from the Deji of Akureland. In fact, the late Deji had dragged the Osolo of Osolo, Oba Olukayode Oluwatuyi, and the Aralepo of Isinkan, Oba Olu Ojo to court and got court judgment that the Obas should not parade themselves as Oba again. But the Oluwatuyi, who himself died two months ago, and Oba Ojo had appealed the court verdict. The youths from Akure community reportedly invaded Isolo early yesterday to effect the seven-day closure of all shops across the metropolis by the Deji-in-Council. Reports had it that the youths from Akure had, Monday, stormed Isinkan to effect the closure order but were restricted. Timely intervention of chiefs saved the situation from degenerating, Monday. But, report said youths from Isolo who got wind of the impending attack mobilised and restricted them following which dangerous weapons were freely used. Some chiefs of Isolo insisted that they were not part of Akure and that the directive did not affect them. They said from time immemorial they have not been closing their shop whenever any Deji dies. Timely intervention of policemen who fired tear gas to disperse the warring youths saved the situation from recording casualties. Looting of shops Meanwhile, as the closure of shop entered its third day, some youths have used the opportunity to loot the shops of those who flout the directive. Shop owners who are unable to settle the youths with cash have their shops destroyed and looted. Confirming the clash between the youths from the two warring quarters, Police image maker, Wole Ogodo, said timely intervention by the Police prevented the situation from degenerating. Ogodo said the Police in the state were on top of the situation and were able to quell the crisis. He appealed to parents and guardians to call their wards to order, vowing that the police would not fold their hands and allow some miscreants to disrupt the existing peace in the state. Mimiko, wife pay condolence Meanwhile, Governor Olusegun Mimiko, his wife, Olukemi and some top government officials, yesterday, visited the Olori of the late Oba Adesida, Mojisola, and members of the Adesida family in the palace. Governor Mimiko, who was visibly sad, noted that the reign of the late monarch was short but eventful. He said government and the entire people of the state would continue to remember the late monarch for his zeal towards the transformation of Akure, the state capital and the entire state. Thanking the Governor on behalf of the Adesida ruling family, Prince Adejare Adesida appreciated Mimiko for his love to their late brother and the entire Adesida family |
