Politics / Abuja Airport Witnesses Low Activities As Buhari, Osinbajo Inaugurated by sarmuel97(m): 12:32pm On May 29, 2019
The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Wednesday witnessed low activities as a result of the inauguration of the new administration at both federal and state governments’ level.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the airport witnessed a decreased movement of passengers and aircraft at both domestic and international wings.

The Station Manager, Max Air, Mr Kehinde OguThe Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Wednesday witnessed low activities as a result of the inauguration of the new administration at both federal and state governments’ level.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the airport witnessed a decreased movement of passengers and aircraft at both domestic and innyale, told NAN that air traffic was very low even though there was no restriction of flight operations at the airport.

Ogunleye said that the airport was unusually scanty, adding that all the airlines’ counters were very quiet.

“There is no traffic at all, it is very low because of the inauguration.

“Everywhere is quiet because we are not doing normal flights today since there are no passengers,” he said.

Similarly, an official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria who pleaded anonymity told NAN that passenger movement was normal at the international wing.

He said that some foreign airlines had arrived while Ethiopian airlines were expected to land at 11:30.

He said that many international passengers were being checked in to board their flights.

At the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) where charter operations take place, he said that few private jets had landed with few dignitaries making their way to the city.

According to him, only a few domestic airlines have arrived and departed this morning because there is no much traffic.

Politics / AD Loses Bid To Stop Sanwo-olu’s Swearing-in by sarmuel97(m): 5:29pm On May 28, 2019
The Alliance for Democracy and Chief Owolabi Salis, the party’s governorship candidate in the 2019 elections, on Tuesday, at an Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ikeja lost their bid to stop the swearing in of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as the Executive Governor of Lagos State on May 29.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in a ruling delivered at 3.16pm on the eve of the swearing-in, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice T. T Asua said that the petition of AD and its governorship candidate lacked merit.

“The main purpose of an interlocutory injunction as rightly argued by the respondents is to preserve the ‘res’ that is the subject matter of the case.

“In this case, the petitioners have failed to show via their affidavit evidence that the ‘res’, which is the governorship seat of Lagos State, is in danger of being destroyed and has to be preserved by the issuance of the restraining order sought.

“An injunction is only issued to restrain a threatened wrong and not to restrain the performance of a legal right,” he said.

Dismissing the application, the Chairman of the Tribunal noted that restraining Sanwo-Olu from being sworn in as Governor will lead to a chaotic situation in the state.

“To crown it all, restraining the second defendant from being sworn in as governor of Lagos State when the tenure of the incumbent expires on the 29th of May 2019 creates a vacuum in the governance of Lagos State.

“This throws spanners in the works, causing confusion and leaving the entire Lagos State at the mercy of the first petitioner’s (AD) personal ambition to govern the state.

“Such an ugly scenario shall not be allowed by this Tribunal. In a final analysis, we hold that this application lacks merit and is hereby dismissed,” Justice Asua said.

After the ruling, Mr Tunde Falola, the counsel for the second respondent (Sanwo-Olu) thanked the Tribunal for its decision.

“On behalf of the second respondent, I thank this Tribunal. This decision has prevented the creation of a chaotic atmosphere in Lagos State. We are grateful sir,” Falola said.

NAN reports that AD and Salis had on April 25 filed a Petition numbered EPT/LAG/GOV/2/2019 which sought to halt Sanwo-Olu’s swearing-in on the grounds that he has a criminal record in the United States and is of unsound mind.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, Sanwo-Olu, All Progressives Congress and the INEC Residential Electoral Commissioner were listed as respondents to the Petition.

Other respondents are -The Returning Officer for The Lagos State Governorship Election, the Commissioner of Police and the Nigerian Army.

The AD and Salis in the petition had claimed that, “The second respondent (Sanwo-Olu) is a person adjudged to be of unsound mind and who is not capable to be sworn in as the Governor of Lagos State.

Politics / Step Aside And Let’s Rebuild, APC Deputy National Chairman Tells Oshiomhole. by sarmuel97(m): 3:38pm On May 28, 2019
Deputy National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, has called on the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole to resign from office.

Shuaibu made this demand in his letter dated May 27, 2019, which was delivered to Oshiomhole in Abuja on May 28.

The letter was titled “APC: IT’S FORTUNES Vs MISFORTUNES, TIME TO ACT!”

The former senator said he wrote the letter in his personal capacity and as the deputy national chairman of the party.

He said, “I write this letter to you with a very deep (sic) heart and high sense of responsibility.

“I write this letter thinking because I am a critical stakeholder in the APC project.

“I write this letter with my hands shaking, arising from the realizing of my involvement in a project that is currently seen as failing, even before achieving the ambition of its founding fathers. I never found myself in any failed project.

“In advanced democracies, people who fail to add value or build over and above what they met on assumption of duty show some civilized examples, they honourably bow out.

“In that connection, therefore, I want to advise you to take the path of honour, to step aside and allow the Party to embark on the onerous task of reconstruction and rehabilitation in those States it was weakened by the effect of the last primary election exercises.

“Or even the task of recreating the party where it is on the path of extinction, arising from the loss of a sitting APC Government, for example in Zamfara State, where you directly personally created the problem leading to the painful complete loss of APC’s electoral fortunes. From up to down, all these are uncontestable facts.

“You cannot exonerate yourself from what happened to APC  (in) Zamfara State, thereby destroying the hopes and aspirations of 534,541 APC members and supporters"

Sports / Mkhitaryan ‘can Play’ In Europa League Final, Says Azerbaijan by sarmuel97(m): 3:40pm On May 21, 2019
Azerbaijani authorities on Tuesday issued assurances that Arsenal’s Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan can play in the Europa League final against Chelsea in Baku, dismissing fears over his safety due to tensions between the countries.

“In spite of the difficult relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Mkhitaryan can play in the Europa League final in Baku,” Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Leyla Abdullayeva, told AFP.

“Armenian sports figures have already taken part in numerous major sporting events that Azerbaijan has welcomed previously. One shouldn’t mix up sport and politics,” she said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Arsenal announced that Mkhitaryan, who is captain of Armenia’s national squad, would miss the game next week in Baku amid safety fears.

The General Secretary of Azerbaijan’s Association of Football Federations, Elkhan Mamedov, said last week that “the Azerbaijani authorities have provided UEFA with guarantees of Mkhitaryan’s safety”.

“He wouldn’t face any safety problems in Azerbaijan,” he said.Azerbaijan and Armenia are locked in a decades-long conflict over the disputed Nagorny Karabakh region.Despite a 1994 ceasefire, frequent exchanges of fire along Karabakh’s volatile frontline risk escalating into an all-out war.

Politics / Okorocha Hasn’t Released Money For My Inauguration, Says Imo Gov-elect by sarmuel97(m): 2:55pm On May 21, 2019
Governor-elect, Emeka Ihedioha, has said that the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has not released a dime for his swearing-in on May 29.

Ihedioha, who spoke in a statement issued by the secretary of his inauguration and handover committee, Ray Emeana, who doubles as the secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, said that the governor had refused to finance the inauguration activities.

According to the governor-elect, there was no truth that Okorocha had released N150m to his inauguration and handover committee for the May 29 program. The statement read partly “Governor Rochas Okorocha has not released any money to the Emeka Ihedioha Inauguration Planning And Handover Committee.

“For the avoidance of doubts, Governor Rochas Okorocha and his outgoing government have not released any money to the Inauguration Planning and Handover Committee. The committee has not requested for any money either. Rather, the joint committee made up of the 31–member Ihediohia team and the 21–member Rochas Okorocha team met and adopted common resolutions on how best to proceed with the inauguration activities.

Rochas Okorocha has since abandoned the mutual resolutions and proceeded with his “Internet-based Commissioning of Internet Sited Projects.xclusivenaija.com.ng“Conscious of the importance Imo people attach to the May 29, 2019 handover date, the Ihedioha/Irona inauguration committee has proceeded with arrangements to deliver a world-class inauguration to Imo people come May 29, 2019.

“Arrangements to ensure this delivery include such activities such as providing clean environments within and around event venues including the Dan Anyiam and Grass Hoppers Handball stadia.

“Indeed, Imo is already agog with excitement. Currently, Owerri is the destination of choice for prominent Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. The hotels are fully booked. Flights into Owerri are filled up. The venues for the various programmes are wearing new and fresh looks.

“We can understand the frustrations of Governor Okorocha and the remnants of his e-rats, having realized that their efforts to derail the swearing-in of His Excellency, Rt. Hon Emeka Ihedioha and Hon (Engr) Gerald Irona as Imo State Governor and Deputy Governor respectively have failed woefully.

Politics / May 29: Police Uncover Plans To Disrupt Handover In Ogun State by sarmuel97(m): 2:30pm On May 21, 2019
Ogun State Police Command has raised the alarm over the alleged plan by some unknown people to disrupt the May 29 handover ceremony in the state.

The Police urged the people of the state to put any form of rallies and procession against Chieftaincy and land matters on hold.

The Police said they were in possession of an intelligence report that showed that “some unscrupulous elements are scheming to foment trouble across the state with a view to disrupting the inauguration of the new administration scheduled for 29th May 2019.

The Police said this in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Tuesday in Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to the PPRO, Rallies, processions, and assemblies in public places are being orchestrated by these enemies of peace supposedly to resolve chieftaincy and land-related matters rather than approaching the Court to seek justice.

He said, “All of these are aimed at heating up the State before the inauguration.“In view of this, the command has put in place a robust security arrangement aimed at checkmating such trouble makers and other criminally-minded persons, including miscreants and disgruntled elements.

“The special units of the command namely SARS, PMF, STS, anti-kidnapping as well as DPOs and Area Commanders have been placed on red alert with specific instruction to closely monitor these misguided elements and respond swiftly to any distress calls and disturbance of public peace.

”Oyeyemi said further that the commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, has ordered twenty-four-hour surveillance patrols across the length and breadth of the State.
